Cairney sent off as Fulham are crushed by Wolves

Fulham 0 Wolves 3

Ten-man Fulham came back down to earth with a bump as Wolves cashed in Tom Cairney's dismissal.

Cairney received a straight red card for a two-footed lunge at Adam Le Fondre on 35 minutes and although the Whites were still level at the break, they never looked likely to keep the visitors at bay.

Wolves' half-time substitute Sheyi Ojo broke the deadlock on 56 minutes when he cut inside Ryan Tunnicliffe on the left edge of the area to send a curling shot in off the far post that took a slight deflection off Le Fondre.

And just three minutes later, the winger repeated the trick by side-stepping his marker just inside the area before firing a low shot that Andy Lonergan contrived to allow through his legs.

It was rough on the Fulham keeper, who made some fine saves in the first half to keep the Whites in the game on a night Friday's 4-0 drubbing of QPR seemed like a distant memory.

The evening had already started to look problematic for them before they were reduced to 10.

Lonergan was called into action twice within a minute, reacting well to block a header from his own player – Ryan Fredericks inadvertently guiding a right-wing cross goalwards when under pressure – and then turning aside James Henry's piledriver from outside the box.

With Ross McCormack forced to funnel back into the right side of midfield vacated by Cairney, Fulham surrendered any initiative they may have had going forward, while at the other end, Benik Afobe became an increasing menace.

There was only going to be one winner once Wolves got their noses in front. Fulham were largely confined to scraps during a comfortable half for the visitors. Meagre ones at that.

Henry rubbed salt in the wounds with a perfect free-kick right on the edge of the area 12 minutes from time.

Fulham: Lonergan; Fredericks (Voser 76), Stearman, Ream, Husband; Cairney, Tunnicliffe, O'Hara (Mattila 84), Pringle (Christensen 60); McCormack, Dembele. Subs not used: Lewis, Voser, Woodrow, Kavanagh, Burn.

Fulham boss Kit Symons on 3-0 defeat to Wolves - and five things we learned including another Whites injury

Gaffer hands down verdict on Cottage collapse, while Dimitri Kondonis listens

Fulham boss Kit Symons opened up on the key factors in defeat to Wolves.

Everything went wrong
That's sometimes how it goes in football. When it's not your night and it doesn't go your way you've got to take it on the chin. It's disappointing, it's hard to take. It happens sometimes. I could sympathise and had empathy with Chris (Ramsey) and it was a similar thing for us tonight.

Despair: Fulham 0-1 Wolves, Sheyi Ojo celebrates

Friday night performance was hard to reproduce
It was always going to be hard to play at the levels that we did on Friday night. Obviously that was a fantastic performance. But in the first half we were doing ok and very much in the game, a little bit too open, but we were very much in it. Obviously the sending off changed it completely.

Red card: Tom Cairney

Tom Cairney sending off was justified
Luckily (Adam) Le Fondre wasn't caught and wasn't hurt.

The sending off was both feet off the ground and the referee has to give it.

I have no problem with that, I'm just thankful the player wasn't hurt. He's not that sort of player and that's probably the reason why it happened, he's not the type of player to go in for too many crunching tackles. His technique wasn't the best and it was a bad decision. It will cost him and cost the team, but there was no malice in it.

Marked man: Adam Le Fondre has Richard Stearman breathing down his neck

Inconsistency is par for the course
We're no different to most teams. Ideally we want to get a real good run going and get a bit of momentum. It's a disappointment but we go again Sunday now, it's a great opportunity, we get an extra day to recover. We're very positive, very upbeat. We'll take it on the chin.

Bad night: Andy Lonergan

Ryan Fredericks injury
Yeah, from fairly early on he tightened up in his groin a little bit. We saw how quick he was on Friday night, but he wasn't able to open up and go at full pace so we had to take him off. We'll have to assess him.

Watcher: Ryan Fredericks sees James Henry soar

Kit Symons hints at new arrivals

Kit Symons has revealed that Fulham could still strengthen their squad with another loan move in the near future.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Cottagers had made the decision to extend James Husband's spell at the club after making five appearances on loan at the club from Middlesbrough.

After claiming three wins in nine Championship games this season, Symons admits that another new arrival is a possibility.

"We are constantly looking," the Fulham boss told reporters after Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. "There's always that temptation."

Fulham are back in action with a trip to London rivals Charlton Athletic on Sunday.
