I was on the books of Cray Wanderers for a couple of years, 17-19 years old and I had trials for Colchester, Charlton, Barnet and Southend. I had the talent to make it at around league one/two level but I didn't have the temperament. I was very shy, very quiet and went missing in those trials. I didn't stand out because I didn't have the confidence to express myself. I suppose you need the full package to make it nowadays.

Still, you can't regret things. My life turned out perfect for me in the end. Lovely family, decent job and I get to watch Kit Symons every week (last one is a joke, incase you think I'm being horrible).

And now I play for the fof 5 a side team and I am so unfit and so rusty that I make Fotheringham look like Messi! It's amazing how much your body can change in 8 years lol. I used to run the 100 metres in under 12 seconds, now I'd be amazed if I could run 100 metres lol

The Swan

In 1961 through to 1974 I played for a youth club team. It was called St. Augustines YC Hammersmith.

We played in the Sunday Sportsman League.I played as a midfield defensive player. The type of role that Nobby Stiles played for England.

We had three teams, one in the Premier, one in div 1 and one in div 3.

I was the captain of the Premier team. As I got a bit older I moved to Centre half.

We did win one cup.

In 1973 I moved to Milton Keynes and played for the Open University. I was 29 and I still managed to play for another ten years.

JDH...when were you at the poly. I played there for a few seasons, some 1st, the remainder split between 2nds and 3rds.  All ok until you got down to the 5ths.

I also played for..

Crawley United (did not last long, it was supposed to be a feeder for Crawley town, didn't work) The team was rubbish.
Three Bridges, mostly reserves for 2 seasons.  (Sussex county league)
Gossops green, Crawley league premier division.
Poly in Chiswick..

Fulham Compton old boys for 2 or 3 seasons.

Rank Xerox, Middlesex league, player manager by this time. (I worked there)

Now.....

Massachusetts over the hill league....
Wayland over 40
Acton over 50
Sudbury over 60.   We are in first place, division 2. (got relegated last season, too many oldies).

That just about covers it.

I was at the Poly from 95-2005 - A few seasons in the 1's, then was manager or the 2's. Honestly the happiest days of my life. I live in California now and miss the poly (and Fulham) so much. I'd still be playing for them if I lived there. Trying to move back!!!

Whats your name and when were you at the Poly?

JDH...I was at the poly in the 70s. I think about 1973 for 5 or 6 years. I also played at the tennis club in the summer. When I played we had awful Blackburn rovers type shirts, 2 halves. That's ok but our colours were red and green halves. My mates took the p suggesting I played for a team of court jesters. (Probably not far from the truth).

Good club, nice pitches.Obviously the stadium pitch felt good to play on but the railway pitch, way over (by the railway line of course) was big, wide and very lush grass, a better surface.

Always had good Saturday nights after the match. A few in the clubhouse then off to a pub somewhere.
