Lewis: We Deserved Better

Frustration was Joe Lewis' main emotion following Fulham's 3-1 defeat by Burnley on Tuesday evening.

Despite the Whites enjoying more than 60 per cent of possession throughout the 90 minutes at Turf Moor, it was the Lancashire outfit who were sharper in front of goal to take the three points.

"It was an even game I thought in the first half," Lewis told fulhamfc.com. "They had a couple of chances that they took well. I don't think they were better than us in the first half, they just took their chances well.

"They scored from their first attack, but the first 10 minutes we played really well. We knocked it around, we kept possession, I think in the first five minutes they hardly touched the ball.

"Their first goal seemed to be their first attack and it was just a free header, which is a shame because we've been working on that, but [Andre Gray] managed to get free and head it in from six yards, which was frustrating."

Gray's brace put the Clarets in control of proceedings going into half-time, but Ross McCormack's goal six minutes after the restart sparked a Fulham onslaught, which unfortunately failed to yield an equaliser. Instead, Matt Taylor wrapped up the win for Burnley in stoppage time.

"I feel like we definitely deserved something out of the game so we've got to take positives from that," Lewis stated. "Once we got our goal in the second half and towards the end of the game they couldn't get out.

"It's a frustrating one because they managed to score without troubling me in between."

Attentions now turn to the next fixture, with Fulham returning to Craven Cottage on Saturday to take on Birmingham City.

Gary Rowett has overseen an impressive turnaround in Blues' fortunes since taking charge a year ago, and they currently occupy a Play-Off spot going into the weekend's meeting.

"They're in good form so we're expecting a good, organised team," goalkeeper Lewis stated. "Their manager Rowett's got them playing some good football, so we'll have a look at them I'm sure and prepare properly, as we normally do, and hopefully get three points on Saturday."

Tickets for Saturday's game against Birmingham City are still available to buy, priced from just £25 for adults and £15 for juniors.

Dons edge out Fulham

Ladies eight unbeaten after late winner

AFC Wimbledon Ladies extended their superb start to the season with victory against Fulham FC Foundation, thanks to a winner from Kelly Jade-Whelan.

Whelan's 16th goal of the season was decisive in the 2-1 win after Fulham had drawn level, but so too was the performance of goalkeeper Tash Salgado (pictured), who made vital saves on the day.

This win keeps Wimbledon firmly in top spot of the London and South East Regional Women's League after an excellent unbeaten record of seven victories and a draw from eight matches.

It was so nearly a dream start for the Dons when Emma Keady came close after getting on the end of a corner, but Fulham responded and Salgado was required to stay alert to deny a couple of efforts from the visitors.

Wimbledon took the lead in the 20th minute when captain Jess Trimnell converted a penalty after a Fulham defender was adjudged to have handled in the area.

The Dons attempted to build on their advantage with Keady and Rebecca Sargent threatening to double the advantage. However, it needed the save of the match to keep Wimbledon in front by half-time with Salgado rising superbly to tip over a shot from outside the box.

All of Wimbledon's hard work was undone just after the hour though when a defensive error gifted Fulham captain Verity Snow an easy chance to level the game.

The Wimbledon response was just what manager Chris Lyons wanted as his side fought back and earned their reward 10 minutes from time. Zoe Clifford, who was handed a role further forward, hit a post and Whelan showed that poacher's instinct once again to strike the winner.

Chris Lyons said: "This is always a game we look forward to and the way our players dealt with Fulham's attacking play and physicality was very good. We did the ugly stuff when we needed too, and asked a lot of questions of our opponents all over the pitch. Once again, our gritty response to conceding a goal was fantastic and the final score showed we had too much quality and strength for Fulham to deal with."

Tash Salgado earned the player of the match award, voted for by the opposition.

AFC Wimbledon: Salgado, McLaren, Houghton-North, Clements, Clarke, Sargent, Trimnell (Suchley 79), Hoesli-Atkins, Clifford, Keady (Wylie 80), Whelan.
