"and their dentist manager got the tactics spot on"

They were certainly very well drilled.

Forever Fulham

Look, Roy stocked the team with players you or I might never have chosen.  Players who had spent a lot of time on the injured list, who hadn't had enough game time to be in form.  No use naming names.  He had his favourites, and they weren't good choices.  Plus, the Tottenham manager had been working his team to exhaustion in anticipation of the upcoming season.  So many players showed up to national team games knackered before the first whistle.  Ah, well...

Embarrassing moment...yes ........ laughing stock.... maybe, but not necessarily the worst. BTW, how did the Netherlands or Scotland do in Euro 2016. As for Wales, they may have beaten the mighty Northern Ireland , but they still lost to our boys when we ran rings around them. That they are there by luck alone is no prize, but the luck of the draw. Laughing stock of the world is a big label to pin on any team.

We GAVE YOU three points and still finished above you and beat the two teams that you could only draw with. We have a great team ethic rather than a bunch of individuals and an actual game plan rather than put our best striker on corner duty, but no we got there by luck, how silly of me to think otherwise
@MattRhys63 - be warned, there will be a lot of nonsense

Thanks for the three points, shame that Iceland were the better a team.

Thank you also for showing the same 'home country' loyalty as your players.

ps. Calm down

Were not worried about Scotland or Holland being there or not, were on about
our lot of underachievers.
Its not just this tournament its the last 50 years as ive stated,6 knockout wins
in that time a disgrace.
Stop trying to make excuses for inept overpaid players who got the runaround
by a tiny nation.
Have you seen all the worlds press reports?
We are a laughing stock, and Im angry about it.Its no good trying to hide the fact
about it by going on about what other sides have done, its what we do that matters.

Italy is a case in point.  You could argue that they are no better than England player-for-player but, in Italy's case, the whole is better  than the sum of the parts.  How is that achieved? Team spirit, perhaps, but it's hard to imagine that they feel more of a team than England.  I think you have to look at the manager.  England doesn't seem to be blessed with tactically astute managers, able to respond quickly to changes in their opponents' game-play.  Iceland didn't play how Hodgson anticipated and he didn't know how to respond.  England will have to look again to a foreign manager, I think.  It just seems to me that managers on the continent think more subtly and innovatively about the game and see tactics as an art-form while English managers view them as a necessary evil.
