Late Malone goal earns a point for Fulham

Fulham 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1
Scott Malone rescued a point for Fulham late on after a rousing finish at Craven Cottage.

Fernando Forestieri's 10th-minute goal, when he fired in off the far post after fine build-up play involving Barry Bannan and Gary Hooper, looked for a long period like it would be enough to win Wednesday the game.

But the Whites saved their best play for the final few minutes and left-back Malone drilled in the equaliser dead on 90 minutes.

For much of the match, Fulham – who were unchanged for the third game in a row after wins over Huddersfield and Brentford – lacked the dynamism seen in those victories and were too careless in possession, against a solid and streetwise Wednesday.

After the goal, Slavisa Jokanovic's side had been fortunate not to concede a second when Gary Hooper slid the ball past the far post with just the keeper to beat.

They were restricted to headers off target by Kevin McDonald and Sone Aluko either side of the break, both from corners, as they struggled to make an impact in the final third.

But in the final 10 minutes they started to apply some pressure, as Floyd Ayite's shooting chance was brilliantly blocked by Jack Hunt and Tom Cairney's follow-up was gathered by Wednesday keeper Keiren Westwood.

Even so, Malone's goal – drilled home emphatically after a cross from the right had fallen kindly to him – came out of the blue, although Fulham ended injury time strongly and Wednesday were forced to dig in for a point.

Fulham: Button; Fredericks (Odoi 76), Kalas, Sigurdsson, Malone; Johansen, McDonald (Parker 76); Cairney, Aluko, Piazon (Ayite 55); Martin.
Subs not used: Bettinelli, Ream, Sessegnon, Smith.

Report: Fulham 1-1 Wednesday

An early strike from Fernando Forestieri looked to have given Wednesday a vital win at in-form Fulham only for Scott Malone to score right at the last to salvage a point.

Forestieri finished a well-crafted move to send the Owls into the lead but Malone's late intervention meant an entertaining encounter at Craven Cottage finished all square.

Openings were made at both ends but the first one counted as the Owls hit the front on nine minutes.

The lively figure of Forestieri sold his marker a dummy and collected the return ball from Gary Hooper to slot across David Button and in.

Wednesday deserved the lead too after taking the game to Fulham and controlling the early exchanges.

But the Cottagers responded with Kevin McDonald heading narrowly wide before the Owls countered themselves and Barry Bannan unleashed a wicked drive from distance that flew just over.

Fulham had a penalty appeal turned down after a coming together involving Bannan and Stefan Johansen as the hosts sought an equaliser before the break.

But Wednesday had the best chance and might have gone two goals to the good when Hooper burst clear on goal only to stab wide of Button.

Ross Wallace fired inches past the post moments later and the Owls saw out the first half in the ascendancy.

Fulham resumed, as expected, with more vigour and a perfectly timed challenge from Sam Hutchinson blocked a Sone Aluko shot on the edge of the area.

The game became stretched with the Londoners desperate for a leveller while Wednesday looked to put the points to bed.

Fulham made a double substitution with 15 minutes to go and the change almost paid immediate dividends as the next attack created a clear chance for Aluko but Jack Hunt made a superb tackle to deny the frontman.

The hosts pressed forward with the clock counting down and certainly bossed possession before grabbing the leveller in added time.

Aluko crossed to the back post and the ball sat up nicely for Malone to drill past Keiren Westwood and deny Wednesday a travelling maximum.

Wednesday: Westwood, Hunt, Loovens, Lees, Reach, Hutchinson (Jones 56), Wallace, Lee, Bannan, Forestieri, Hooper (Fletcher 59)

Scott Malone strikes to earn Fulham a late point against Sheffield Wednesday

Scott Malone scored an injury-time leveller to earn Fulham a 1-1 draw after Fernando Forestieri's fine strike appeared to have earned Sheffield Wednesday victory.
Former Watford forward Forestieri produced a classy finish early on and it looked like the Owls had produced the perfect response to two straight defeats.
But left-back Malone popped up in stoppage to give Fulham an unlikely point.
Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal had restored Forestieri to his starting 11 having left him on the bench for the 2-1 home defeat by Ipswich just before the international break.
The Italian responded in the best way possible as he took just 10 minutes to find the net, his fourth of the campaign, in style with a finish from 15 yards after rapid movement from Barry Bannan and Gary Hooper.
Fulham had beaten Huddersfield 5-0 in their last game at Craven Cottage and immediately threatened an equaliser. Lucas Piazon's free-kick was deflected wide and from the resulting Tom Cairney corner, Kevin McDonald headed over the bar unmarked with the goal at his mercy.
Wednesday's speed in attack continued to cause the hosts problems with Tomas Kalas' weak back header letting in Ross Wallace but David Button was alive to the danger.
Bannan then close with a powerful drive from Hooper's pull back while at the other end, Stefan Johansen had penalty appeals waved away after going down under a challenge from Jack Hunt.
Fulham had a half chance when Sone Aluko's deflected shot nearly caught out Wednesday keeper Kieren Westwood.
Wednesday continued to create chances with Hooper running onto Westwood's long kick and going one-on-one with Button before firing wide.
Forestieri also then drilled wide from the edge of the area after taking the ball off his own team-mate Wallace.
Fulham started on the front foot after the break with Aluko heading just over from Tom Cairney's cross.
But they found it difficult to break down a well-drilled Wednesday defence despite bringing on Floyd Ayite from the bench.
Steven Fletcher come on as sub for the visitors and came close to getting a second when he was not quite able to convert from Bannan's free-kick.
Hunt came to Wednesday's rescue to deny Ayite from Denis Odoi's cross before Cairney could then only shoot straight at Westwood from a good position.
Ayite then shot wide from Aluko's cross while Scott Parker shot wide but Fulham lacked much in the way of clear-cut opportunity.
However they rescued a point in the first minute of added time as Ayite flicked on from Aluko's cross before Malone slammed home on the half volley.

Head Coach Reaction

Head Coach Slaviša Jokanović was satisfied with grabbing a late leveller and a point against a resolute Sheffield Wednesday side on Saturday afternoon.

After trailing for close to the entirety of the encounter, a late strike from Scott Malone as the match entered the first minute of stoppage time saw the shares spoiled.

"We found many problems during the game," Jokanović reflected. "After Sheffield Wednesday scored their goal they made few chances.

"They are an experienced team and didn't give us many chances to play. There were lots of yellow cards and they wanted to finish the game with a point and in the last minute we had a chance to win the game.

"We expected to win the three points and in this moment one point can be small for us but we are going to go in to the end of the season with this point and see if it's worth something or not.

"If we played this game last season we would probably have lost 3-0 or something. We didn't play very good football today but we try and move forward step by step.

"Today was a very important day for us.

"It is where we weren't at our level and found problems we are only strong enough for one point. I have to be satisfied for the point but I can't be completely satisfied as we didn't win the game. I am satisfied with the progress we're making."

With the game meandering towards a 1-0 defeat Scott Malone slammed home at the back post following a period of dominance from the Whites.

After a run of games out of the side the left-back has cemented his place back in the side with some fine displays. He followed up his Man of the Match performance a fortnight ago against Brentford with another solid display.

The Head Coach was quick to praise the full-back and the determination and desire shown to battle back into the side.

"Scott Malone's goal was very important for us," he said. "I generally expect my players to keep pushing and fighting to get in to the starting eleven.

"For those who didn't participate in the game I expect them to push harder to fight to be in a better position for minutes.

"Scott Malone has Ryan Sessegnon behind him and he knows he needs to be at a high level to start.

"This is not a signal for other people to be relaxed and believe they don't have a chance to get in to the starting eleven. All my players need to be pushing hard for the best interests of the team and they have to be ready for this."

Despite the point and going unbeaten in three matches, Jokanović wants his side to continue to push themselves and remain focused on the near future.

"I am always positive but I am never satisfied," he stated. "We need to try and improve ourselves.

"There are many games in front of us. We know what the supporters expect of us but I don't want us thinking about what will happen in May.

"It's important that we only look at the next step and that we improve in our upcoming game against Brighton and put ourselves at the highest level and offer a better performance than we did here at Craven Cottage."

Slavisa Jokanovic rues lacklustre Fulham performance after last-ditch draw against Sheffield Wednesday
Fulham's manager was also less than impressed with the referee's performance

Leaders among men: Slavisa Jokanovic (L) and Scott Parker

Slavisa Jokanovic was left frustrated with his Fulham side after a slow start which cost his side against Sheffield Wednesday.

Fernando Forestieri struck after 10 minutes for the visitors, who entered the game in 10th place, and were content to take their goal and sit back against the Whites.

It took until injury time for the hosts to equalise, with unlikely source Scott Malone slamming home from six yards.

But the Fulham boss was left frustrated with the lethargic start from his side.

"We are unhappy at the end because in the last five minutes we could have scored a second goal to win the game. But to be honest, we didn't play very well.

"We didn't offer our best performance but on the other hand I am very satisfied with some parts of the game, we didn't surrender in any moment. They played a better football game today. They were closer than us to winning three points.

"But if we played this game last season we'd have lost 3-0 or something.

"When we play good football like we did against Huddersfield and Brentford it's easier to win points, but today we learned to compete – we found many problems during the game but at the end we scored the goal and at the end could have scored a second goal too."

The Serbian manager, who earned has promotion to his name with Watford, also rued the referee's decision not to point to the spot.

"There is one situation in the Sheffield Wednesday box where it's very clear a player has pulled the shirt of Stefan Johansen," Jokanovic continued.

"The referee was in a very good position, I saw this situation, all the stadium saw this situation, but for some reason he didn't point to the penalty spot.

"If you pull the shirt in the box the rules say very clearly it's a penalty. It's a big mistake in a dangerous moment for us."

But Jokanovic pointed at the positives - highlighting the importance of getting a point against a fellow top-six contender.

"The players who started the last three games, they need to push hard and fight for their position, in the same people who didn't participate much can't surrender, they need to work hard and compete for the starting 11," he added.

"Today we showed too many weaknesses in the defensive part of the game, we weren't solid enough and especially we found so many problems with Sheffield Wednesday's strikers.

"They protect the ball, they won in the challenges. We need to be careful after the international breaks – players who arrived two days before [the game] need to immediately be 100% focused on what they have to do.

"I try to learn, too, for the next time we find this situation. This game could be a play-off game, it's very important to find a result like we found today – this is the lesson we learned today and this is the positive part."

Slavisa Jokanovic thinks Fulham were hard done by against Sheffield Wednesday

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic thinks his side were denied all three points against Sheffield Wednesday after Stefan Johansen saw shouts for a first half penalty

The Fulham midfielder appeared to have been pulled back in the area by Jack Hunt before Scott Malone's last minute goal eventually cancelled out Fernando Forestieri's goal.

Jokanovic said afterwards: "It was one situation in the Sheffield Wednesday box where one player pulled the shirt of Stefan Johansen. I saw this situation and everyone in the stadium saw this.

"It must be some kind of change of rules. The rules say it is clearly a penalty.

"They explained the change of rules. If they talk about this situation and then do not point to the penalty spot, I didn't hear very well.

"I don't want to be funny but it is a big mistake in a very dangerous moment for us. People care about important decisions.

" Jokanovic believed the result, achieved thanks to Malone's half-volley, proves his Fulham side are improving.

"It was a fair result, we played very well and I'm really satisfied with some parts of the game," he said. "We did not surrender in any moment. They played the better football and closer to three points.

"If we had played this game last year we would have lost 3-0. "We did not offer our best performance but it was a small step where we are learning to compete."

Opposite number Carlos Carvalhal was happy despite the lack goal denying his side who appeared on course for three points thanks to a fine Forestieri goal.

"We performed very well," he said. "Their team are in good shape, had won the last game 5-0 here and were in good momentum.

"We scored one goal and probably should have killed the game.

"We expected Fulham to press in the second half. In counter-attack we could have killed the game. "We are not happy with the scoreline, we deserved more. We felt we achieved one point but lost two.

"I'm very happy with the team and the personality we showed. The Fulham fans will realise just how tough a team Sheffield Wednesday are.

"The team performed very well. I felt most of them hit their best level. I said Fernando was back before the game as I know my players. Fernando is a player we need like this and the real Fernando like last season." Wednesday suffered injury to Gary Hooper, who was forced off in the second half.

"Hooper will have a scan, let's see, it seems like a muscular problem but we will analyse him," added Carvalhal. "We don't know at the moment."

Malone rescues a point
by DAN on NOVEMBER 19, 2016

For much of the ninety minutes, it appeared as if it was going to be another one of those days. Fulham, fitful in possession and far from their fluent best, struggled to break down a well-organised Sheffield Wednesday side determined to arrest an alarming run of results that suggested the Championship had finally worked out Carlos Carvahal's methods and looked set to be condemned to another defeat courtesy of a poacher's finish from Fernando Forestieri. But then, in the first of five minutes added on as a result of Wednesday's blatant time-wasting, up popped Scott Malone to lash an equaliser past Kieren Westwood at his near post.

Fulham, who had to wait until the 76th minute for their first shot on target to arrive in the shape of a tame Tom Cairney effort, fashioned more chances in stoppage time than throughout the rest of the game. Scott Parker had already contrived to clear the crossbar with a volley he first hit into the ground from close range and Chris Martin's flick on from a corner caused carnage in the box but failed to drop to a white shirt. In a pulsating finale, a Sone Aluko shot struck Martin and flew wide, whilst Wednesday might have won it when David Button juggled a speculative Forestieri shot, almost sending it into his own net.

At times, during a largely forgettable first half, it was as if the radical overhaul embarked upon by Slavisa Jokanovic over the summer had never happened. Fulham's football was ponderous, their passing lacked precision and purpose and the tempo that had swept aside both Huddersfield and Brentford before the international break was a distant memory. Wednesday looked much more progressive in the final third, with the triumvirate of Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Barry Bannan posing all sorts of problems for a stretched back four, and it came as little surprise when a slick move led to the Owls opening the scoring after ten minutes.

Fulham were left ball watching – and possibly fell victim to the vagaries of the modern offside rule as Forestieri appeared to have started his run from behind the back line when the Wednesday attack began – but they paid the ultimate price for not closing down a number of attacking threats. The former Watford forward slipped past Sigurdsson all too easily to work a clever one-two with Hooper and guide an effort across David Button, who might have felt he could have palmed the ball to safety, and into the far corner.

The goal buoyed the Owls who played some pretty football in the final third – in stark contrast to the cynical niggly fouls and time-wasting that unfortunately characterised a bitty display – and they might feel unfortunate not to led by more than Foresteri's opener at half time. Barry Bannan's speculative shot was deflected over and the former Aston Villa midfielder should have done better than drive high into the Hammersmith End from eleven yards after a sweeping counter-attack.

Hooper spurned an even better chance when he capitalised on some dozy defending from Siggurdson to latch onto a long clearance from Westwood and sprint clear of the Fulham defence – only to send his finish past the onrushing Button and wide of goal. The lively Ross Wallace sent a low drive fractionally wide of the far post as the visitors finished the first period well on top. By contrast, Fulham's threat was limited with Kevin McDonald's free header from a corner their clearest opening, although referee Geoff Eltrincham waved away shouts for a penalty after Stefan Johansen was felled by Bannan – and that was far from his most puzzling decision in a perplexing performance.

Fulham were far more incisive in the second half with Aluko denied the chance to pull the trigger in a promising position by a perfectly timed challenge from the outstanding Sam Hutchinson, but Wednesday always retained a threat on the break. Bannan fed Forestieri with the cleverest of passes through a host of bodies but the Italian's shot skewed disappointingly wide of the far post. The introduction of Parker with fifteen minutes to play galvanised a weary Fulham side who looked like they were about to run out of injuries and the Whites laid siege to the Wednesday goal for the final ten minutes.

Fellow substitute Denis Odoi almost had an instant impact when his low cross found its way to Cairney, but his hurried shot was easily fielded by a grateful Westwood. As time ticked by, desperate Wednesday blocks inceased Fulham's frustration, such as the superb saving tackle from Jack Hunt on Aluko and the sight of both the Nigerian and Stefan Johansen blazing efforts over the bar from long range showed just how effective the Owls' nullification of Chris Martin had been.

The sting in the tail arrived in stoppage time. Aluko, who despite not hitting the heights of recent weeks never stopped running in a bid to turn things around, produced a deep cross from the right that picked out Malone's late run and the full-back kept his composure to smash home the equaliser that the home side's persistence deserved. There was still time for either side to win it in a period of added time that proved far more absorbing than the ninety minutes that had gone before – but the late sucker punch would certainly have felt like a defeat for Wednesday.
