There's so much gamesmanship going on.  The only way to even it out, sad to say, is by taking the temperature of each ref, what he's letting players do and not do, and playing up to the line yourself.  Otherwise, you're just handicapping your team by playing in an idealised manner.  Pitty pat passers have to learn to dish out some rough house or the bully boy teams will have their way with you.  They surround the ref and intimidate him into making it a red card?  Then you do too!  And for Pete's sake, keep talking to the ref, telling him what you are seeing and experiencing.  What you say you are seeing becomes what the ref starts to see.  Paint a picture.  It's all about influence.  And we haven't even begun talking about diving!!

I can supply the Thermometers.
Also I have seen teams on Sunday mornings more streetwise than Fulham when it comes to influencing referees.

The red card system can be crude, unfair and hard justice that can completely ruin a match.
The decision is an instant action by a referee who understandably can make a mistake and which can alter the course of a game.
Also think of the effect of a red card given early in the game compared with one given late in the game for a similar offence, a totally different effect.
Much better to send a player to a sin bin for ten minutes, the same effect at any time of the game, and then to review the offence with video evidence at the end of the game and set a hard punishment relative to the severity of the offence.

Perhaps they could issue something in between a Yellow and a Red, like an Orange Card for a sin bin.

There already is a rule regarding consistant fouling etc, which comes under " Persistant infringements of the laws of the game ".
I personally am In favour of the Sin Bin issue, as not only will players not want to be responsible for leaving their team down to ten men for 15 mins. But also that's the last thing the Manager would want, and it may shake a few managers up, who may or may not instruct players to be cynical, to ensure their players do not push their luck.
