Would this be enforceable, or even legal?
Obviously loaned players can't, by regulation, play against their own club (unless you're Chelsea/Atletico playing in a European Cup semi-final!) but, off hand, I can't recall any instance where this has happened in the case of a permanent transfer.

I could well be wrong and would be genuinely interested to be reminded of any case where this has happened.

Never heard of it for anything other than a loan. Perhaps it's technically feasible but would have to be not "in restraint of trade". I agree with the poster who said that perhaps it would just be delayed until after the match. IF this is anything other than just another rumour/fake news.

I've never understood why the transfer window extends beyond the start of the season.

At the rate we are moving in this window it is more likely that we would have to wait until we play Norwich on 31st March 2018 before we see Jerome in action for us.
