Keeper change on cards for Hughes

Unsettled keeper Mark Schwarzer could return for Fulham against Wolves but Mark Hughes has plenty of other injury worries.

Schwarzer, who is believed to be unhappy at the club's reluctance to let him join Arsenal over the summer, has not featured this season for the Cottagers due to a back injury but could be back in action against Mick McCarthy's side at home on Saturday.

David Stockdale has done well covering, though, and may keep his place anyway as the Cottagers look to claim their first Premier League win of the season.

Elsewhere, Damien Duff (calf), and Bobby Zamora (thigh) both remain serious doubts for the clash, while Andrew Johnson (knee), Philippe Senderos (Achilles) and Diomany Kamara (ankle) are all definitely ruled out.

Mick McCarthy eyeing Cottage industry at Fulham

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy today vowed to carry on being bright and bold at Fulham to maintain their unbeaten start to the season, writes Tim Nash.

McCarthy's side return to action after the two-week international break looking to extend their solid start which has seen them topple Stoke and draw against Everton and Newcastle in bruising encounters.

The Molineux chief believes his side can continue their impressive form at Fulham as they kick off back-to-back trips to London with Tottenham to follow.

"When we played there last season we were in a different position, scrapping for points to make sure we stayed in the league," said the boss.

"We still want points. If we come back with a point from Fulham I'll be delighted with it. But if you ask me will we be setting up to sit back and defend, that won't be the case.

"I don't see any reason why we shouldn't feel we can get points anywhere. We had it last season when our away record was good and we'd like to maintain that.

"We're new into the season, but maybe playing with a bit more ambition, both of us.

"Our fans expect us to stay up – and rightly so based on what they saw last season and how we've started this season."

McCarthy also vowed to fight fire with fire after his side were criticised for being too physical in their last two games.

"If Newcastle had come here and let us knock it about, we'd have knocked it about as well," he said.

"But they came here and put a foot in."

"Look at Jody Craddock's eye with four or five stitches in it and a bandage around his head, but I'm not bothered about that.

"That's the way it is because we have dentists who can put their teeth back in, doctors who will straighten their noses and put stitches in them.

"That's my view on it and they all know that."

Wolves are without Ronald Zubar, who injured a hamstring in training yesterday.

Deadline loan signing Marcus Bent is in the squad for the first time.

Palace stopper Speroni devastated to miss out on Fulham move

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni admits he was devastated not to seal a deadline day switch to Fulham.

But the Argentine has started negotiations over extending his contract at Selhurst Park, which expires at the end of this season.

Mark Hughes made a last ditch bid for the 31-year-old as they feared losing Mark Schwarzer to Arsenal.

But Palace told the Premier League side that they would not sell Speroni - who has been the club's Player of the Season for the last three years - at any price.

And, although Speroni admits he would have loved to have tested himself in the top flight, he is now thinking about committing his future to Palace.

"I was disappointed the Fulham move didn't go through, as it would have been a great opportunity for me to play in the Premier League," he said.

"There were lots of rumours and I know that bids were rejected for me, although it was very late in the transfer window.
"But I have been at Palace for seven years and I am happy here - I had my first meeting this week about extending my contract.

"I want to play in the Premier League, and I really believe we can be in the fight for the play-offs this season."

Fulham boss plays down Mark Schwarzer fears

Sep 10 2010

Mark Schwarzer

FULHAM boss Mark Hughes insists he's got no worries playing Mark Schwarzer against Wolves tomorrow.

Questions have been raised about the Australian's mental state after seeing a summer move to Arsenal fall through.

But Hughes insists the veteran keeper is still his number one – even when David Stockdale returns from injury in three weeks.

He said: "Mark's here for the immediate future. He will be first choice as long as he's here.

"I've got no worries about his mental state. That opportunity [to move to Arsenal] has closed, and sometimes you get disappointments in football.

"But Mark's extremely professional, and will get on with the job."

Fulham new-boy targets starting spot

Sep 10 2010

By Paul Warburton

RAFIK Halliche insists he joined Fuham to claim one of the coveted central defensive slots.

The Algerian World Cup star helped keep England at bay in the 0-0 draw in South Africa in the summer, and after his £1.5 million transfer from Benfica is ready to usurp either Brede Hangeland or Aaron Hughes from the Whites backline.

Halliche said: "At the end of the day, the best player is the one picked – not the one who is favourite.

"I think those games in the World Cup helped me, and I think I had a good performance against the likes of Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard – but maybe I can do even better when I play them in the Premier League.

"I had options all over Europe before deciding on Fulham. But they were the first club from the Premiership to ask about me, and I was immediately attracted to them."

Sep 10 2010

By Jacob Murtagh

CHRIS Baird is set to sign a new deal at Fulham.

The Northern Irish utility man is out of contract at the end of the season, but boss Mark Hughes is keen to keep him at Craven Cottage.

He said: "We're working through them, and we hope to tie things up with Chris next week."

Zamora signs new deal
Cottagers striker signs four-year contract

Fulham have confirmed that England international striker Bobby Zamora has signed a new four-year contract.

Skysports.com first revealed that Zamora was to be offered the most lucrative deal in the club's history, something he has now signed.

The 29-year-old, who earned his first cap against Hungary last month, had been contracted to the club until the end of the current season.

The former West Ham, Tottenham and Brighton hit-man is now tied to the Craven Cottage outfit until the summer of 2014.

Zamora has made himself a firm fans' favourite at Fulham with a prolific season last term earning him England recognition at the start of this campaign.

The West Londoners have now moved to fend off potential suitors by securing his services for the foreseeable future.

Zamora was expected to be named in England's squad for their recent Euro 2012 qualifiers only to be ruled out of action due to injury.
