Rafa Soares says he chose Fulham over other options due to the club's Premier League reputation

The left-back joins the Whites on a season-long loan from Porto after Fulham fought off two major European clubs for his services.

New Fulham signing Rafa Soares says he's delighted after securing a season-long loan move to Craven Cottage.

Speaking to the club's website, he said: "I'm very happy.

"I came here to help the Club achieve its goals this season and I hope to experience a lot and do a good job. I have ambitions to improve myself too, and help the Club to have a good season.

"I had other options, other clubs were interested in me, but the way Fulham acted, I was decisive that I wanted to come here, and I think it's the right time to be here.

"Fulham has a reputation of a Premier League club and this season I want to help put the Club back in the place it belongs."

Team News

Slaviša Jokanović will use Tuesday night's cup tie as an opportunity for some of Fulham's youngsters and new arrivals to impress.

The Whites Head Coach made 11 changes for the First Round victory at Wycombe Wanderers, and he is going to switch things up again when Bristol Rovers visit Craven Cottage.

"For football players it's always important to play games, and this is another chance," he told fulhamfctv. "There are a few new players in our squad, who in the future I believe will be very important players for us.

"For some players, they've only had two training sessions, like Rui Fonte. And [Aboubakar] Kamara, he's been with us for three weeks. We are not in pre-season but they need to be available to learn fast and be available to support and to help the team.

"We need them. I can understand they need a little bit more time to adapt. These games that are in front of us are important for these people to understand well what we expect from our players who play in different positions.

"We want to keep going in this competition. It's normal at the start of the season that in 21 days we must play seven games. I am going to make changes and I am going to use some young players.

"I am going to try and test some new players more. The target is to be competitive, the target is to win the game, and we must be focused to be successful.

"It's a chance to build our confidence and to be ready for everything that comes after this game."

Tom Cairney has been carrying a knock since the summer, but Jokanović is optimistic he'll have his Captain back firing on all cylinders before long.

"Tom Cairney is our most important player," he stated. "We created a kind of style around him.

"This start of the Championship, and pre-season too, there have been many problems with him. He has some problems with his knee, he missed a lot of training, many games too.

"Actually right now he is not working with us, he is not in the squad, but we are going to push to get him ready for the Ipswich game.

"After this game we are going to have two weeks and we are going to try and work with him and recover his power and find a better level that we know he can offer us.

"This moment is not the best moment for him, but we believe he is soon going to be at his highest level."

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic reveals the type of players he is likely to use against Bristol Rovers

The Craven Cottage boss is preparing ahead of the second round Carabao Cup tie

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic will look to use his younger players in their Carabao Cup tie against Bristol Rovers tonight.

"Yes, this week we were working with 19 players and it depends how many players I'll have on Tuesday night," the Serbian manager told Get West London.

"I want to use all my squad and in this way some of the young players will be part of this competition and this game in the Carabao Cup."

Fulham, who only have one win in all competitions this season, are without key man Lucas Piazon. The Chelsea loanee suffered a broken leg against Leeds United.

Rovers manager Darrell Clarke didn't explicitly say whether he would rotate his squad, but did say there were "a lot of walking wounded" following their 3-2 win against Bury on Saturday.

"We're very depleted in the injury department, but we'll put a team out that can be competitive and hopefully give Fulham a good game," he told the club website.

Rovers will hope that midfielder Billy Bodin can bring his fine form at the weekend to Craven Cottage and topple their Championship opponents who are currently on an under whelming run of form.

Moving for this prolific forward will see Fulham into the top-six this season

Fulham have struggled in the opening weeks of the Championship season, and are yet to pick up their first win as they go in search of a place in the top six once more.

The Cottagers have drawn three of their opening four encounters, and although draws at Leeds and Reading, where Slavisa Jokanovic's men played 90 minutes with ten men, could be considered good results in the grand scheme of things.

However, two goals during this period will cause last year's joint top goalscorers cause for concern, and Jokanovic may wish to address this issue before the transfer window slams shut in the next couple of weeks.

A new striker could be on the agenda, and Huddersfield Nahki Wells should certainly be in the frame for a move to Craven Cottage this month.

The prolific forward is surplus to requirements following the Terriers promotion to the Premier League, and Wells could be on the move before the end of the summer.

Fulham have the cash to fund a permanent transfer for the 27-year-old Bermudian, but may test Huddersfield's resolve with a loan offer for the player.

Wells has proven prolific since moving to English football from his homeland, enjoying bountiful spells with Bradford and Huddersfield, and he could certainly continue to find the net in what is a very creative Fulham side.

The goals will come for the Cottagers, and the likes of Tom Cairney, Stefan Johansen and Floyd Ayite will surely begin to find their scoring boots in the next few fixtures.

However by adding Wells to the mix, Fulham would be acquiring a natural goalscorer, which is something they seem to lack at the moment.

Aboubakar Kamara is showing promise, but may find it difficult in what is his first year in English football.

Wells is a proven goalscorer at this level, and if Jokanovic can pull a deal off, Fulham have to be considered one of the favourites for a place in the top six.

Fulham hoping Cairney will return against Ipswich

Fulham hope to have captain Tom Cairney fit in time to face Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Scotland midfielder has missed three of the Whites' first five games this season in all competitions with a recurring knee problem.

He has been ruled out of the EFL Cup game with Bristol Rovers but boss Slavisa Jokanovic hopes to have him back for the weekend.

"Actually right now he is not working with us, he is not in the squad, but we are going to push to get him ready for the Ipswich game," Jokanovic told Fulham's website.

"The start of the Championship, and pre-season too, there have been many problems with him. He has some problems with his knee, he missed a lot of training, many games too.

"After this game we are going to have two weeks [during the international break] and we are going to try and work with him and recover his power and find a better level that we know he can offer us.

"Tom Cairney is our most important player. We created a kind of style around him."

Porto Deal To Trigger Next Spurs Buy

Ryan Sessegnon could finally be on his way to Spurs.

Fulham have just completed the loan signing of Rafa Soares from Porto. The 22-year-old spent last season loaned out to Rio Ave and has played 9 times for Portugal U21s. The player told the press: "Fulham has a reputation of a Premier League club and this season I want to help put the club back in the place it belongs."

This would facilitate Sessegnon getting the move he really wanted and was all set to make until Fulham started to get cute with Levy over the terms – as they believed they could benefit from the Bonzo fee.

That deal was then unexpectedly put on hold. Then Danny Rose went full numb-nut. Then Levy had a re-think ...and now we're back in for the boy.

At 17 years of age, kindly note that this is yet another one for the Academy.

Possible complications this time round? Manchester United are said to be notionally interested.

In Focus: Tottenham to battle Man United for Sessegnon, but not in this window

According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur could face competition from Premier League rivals in the race to sign highly-rated Fulham defender Ryan Sessegnon, who is rated at £50m according to The Times, before the transfer window slams shut.

What's the word, then?

Well, Sky Sports says that the Red Devils are showing "significant interest" in the 17-year-old, who has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young players in the Championship.

The left-back, who can also play further forward on that flank, only signed a new four-year deal with the Cottagers in June, but it hasn't stopped the interest from English top flight clubs.

Sky Sports reported last week that Tottenham are keen on the England Under-19 international with doubts over Danny Rose's future, but they were warned that it would take a huge offer to convince Fulham to cash in on him.

Sky Sports adds that while United would be willing to loan him back to the Championship side if they could complete a deal before next Thursday, owner Shahid Khan isn't willing to entertain any offers for the starlet.

Why do United and Spurs want Sessegnon?

Despite the fact that he only turned 17 in May, the left-sided player has made a huge impression for Fulham in the Championship, and for his country at youth level.

Sessegnon scored an impressive seven goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for the Cottagers last term, including an impressive brace in his side's 3-1 win against eventual champions Newcastle United at St James' Park, when he played in a more advanced role on the left.

While he loves to get forward, the England Under-19 international also shows great maturity and is well aware of his defensive responsibilities, and he made 46 clearances and 11 interceptions in 23 Championship appearances last season.

In addition, he also won 27 tackles and showed his ability to move forward with the ball by successfully completing 19 take-ons.

Would he be a good signing for United or Spurs?

He certainly would be, albeit more one for the future.

Despite his impressive performances for club and country, it would be difficult to see Sessegnon become a starter for United or Spurs at the age of 17, but of course both Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino have shown that they aren't afraid to blood younger players.

While a transfer looks unlikely now because of the reported £50m price tag, the two manager are likely to go head-to-head for his signature again in the future.

Foot In Both Camps

Ahead of Fulham's meeting with Bristol Rovers, we caught up with a man who scored goals for fun at both clubs...

Having enjoyed a prolific stint at non-league Stevenage, Barry Hayles was picked up by Pirates manager Ian Holloway ahead of the 1997/98 season.

It proved to be an inspired signing for the Division Two side, with Hayles netting 38 goals in under a season-and-a-half at the Memorial Stadium.

"Going from the Conference to [what's now] League One, I adapted fairly well," Hayles told fulhamfc.com modestly. "I hit the ground running and started scoring goals early days, which settled me right in really.

"Having come out of part-time football and having to adapt to full-time and the stress on the body and all sorts, it's not easy, but I had a great start and it just got better and better really.

"I got the golden boot that year so people who had never heard of me, they were looking at me and seeing where I'd come from, which was definitely quite pleasing."

Everyone loves a goal scorer, and that was certainly the case for Hayles who enjoyed a great relationship with the Gas supporters.

"It was brilliant," he stated. "I was a proper Rovers man, proper blue half of the city.

"There was an opportunity after my first season finished for me to go to Bristol City, but being Rovers through and through I turned that down. And it worked out to be the best move of my career, most definitely, as I went to Fulham a few months later."

That switch to Craven Cottage came about in November 1998 as the Mohamed Al Fayed revolution continued to gather momentum, with the Whites paying £2m for his services.

"It's probably still their record sale," Hayles said. "And I think it might still be a record signing at that level.

"From where I'd come from, to then be in that situation, was very eye-opening. There was a lot of pressure involved as well.

"Rovers weren't a massive club, they didn't have a massive stadium, their revenue wasn't huge, so they would definitely have been pleased to receive the offer and for it to go through.

"I'm sure the chairman at the time would have been very happy, having spent £250,000 a year and a bit ago, to then get more than £2m within that period."

Hayles certainly has a foot in both camps ahead of the Carabao Cup meeting between the two sides, but he's backing the Whites to progress to Round Three.

"I think Fulham should have enough to see them off," he stated. "Of course anything can happen in the cup, but I do think Fulham will definitely have enough to dispose of them."

Great news for Fulham ahead of Ipswich Town clash on Saturday

According to reports from West London Sport, Fulham's captain Tom Cairney could be fit enough to face Ipswich on Saturday.

The 26-year-old has missed three of Fulham's opening five games this season with a nagging knee problem but the club hopes to have him back to full fitness as soon as possible.

Slavisa Jokanovic is determined to have his captain back in his side describing Cairney as the club's "most important player" and that he "created a kind of style around him".

Cairney, who was made the captain at Craven Cottage last season, managed an impressive return of 12 goals and 11 assists in 45 league games during the 2016/17 campaign, from an attacking midfield position.

The former Blackburn player has been capped once by his native Scotland and will undoubtedly play a huge role in Fulham's push for promotion this season.
AdTech Ad

The Verdict

It has been a start to the season to forget for Fulham so far this campaign.

Just two league goals scored in four games and not a single win either.

Tom Cairney's creativity going forward clearly plays a big part in the club's attacking play and getting him back in time for the Ipswich game could be the difference between winning and losing.

Ipswich are second in the league with no points dropped so far so it won't be an easy fixture, but having their captain back will do them a world of good.

Simon Jordan has advice for Tottenham Hotspur target Ryan Sessegnon

Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon is reportedly wanted by Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham in the summer transfer window.

Sessegnon is one of the best young players in the Championship, and is hugely talented and promising.

The left-back is only 17 years of age, but former England Under-19 international is already a regular for Fulham.

The defender made 26 appearances for the Cottagers in the Championship last season and has started all four league fixtures for the London club so far this season.

Sessegnon signed his first professional contract with Fulham in June, as announced on the club's official website.

The youngster's contract at the former Premier League club is now until June 2020, but he has been linked with moves away from Craven Cottage.

The Daily Mail has credited Manchester United and Tottenham with interest in the youngster, but former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan believes that the left-back should remain at Fulham and continue to play regular first-team football.

"This boy needs to stay at Fulham and learn his trade rather than go into the reserves at Manchester United or Tottenham," said Jordan about Sessegnon on the Kick Off show on talkSPORT on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, August 21, 2017).

Barry Hayles on why he chose Bristol Rovers over Bristol City, and his thoughts on the Carabao Cup

Two of Hayles' former sides, Fulham and Rovers, will play against each other tonight

Barry Hayles has been on the books of many clubs during his career. 13 to be exact.

But the two teams where his career really took off were Bristol Rovers and Fulham, and both appear to hold a special place in his heart.

The two clubs, now in League One and the Championship respectively, come face to face tonight at Craven Cottage in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

And Hayles has been reliving his experiences with both clubs.

The striker, who is now player-manager of Windsor FC at the age of 45, joined Rovers back in 1997 - whilst under the management of Ian Holloway - from non-league Stevenage Borough.

In his first season, he won the golden boot, after netting 23 goals, and brought the Pirates to the play-off final, where they narrowly missed out on promotion to Northampton.

"I got the golden boot that year so people who had never heard of me, they were looking at me and seeing where I'd come from, which was definitely quite pleasing," Hayles said in an interview with the Fulham 's official website.

"There was an opportunity after my first season finished for me to go to Bristol City, but being Rovers through and through I turned that down. And it worked out to be the best move of my career, most definitely, as I went to Fulham a few months later."

Hayles made the switch to Craven Cottage for £2million pounds in 1998. He made over 200 appearances and helped them get promoted twice to reach the Premier League for the first time in their history.

Fulham team news: Steven Sessegnon in line to start League Cup clash with Bristol Rovers

Steven Sessegnon, the twin brother of Tottenham and Manchester United target Ryan, is in line to play for Fulham against Bristol Rovers tonight.

Fulham head coach Slavisa Jokanovic will rotate his squad for the Carabao Cup tie at Craven Cottage and Steven, who played in the previous round against Wycombe, is likely to feature.

The 17-year-old, who can play in midfield and defence, and Ryan — one of the hottest properties in English football - have come through the Fulham academy together and both signed new contracts in the summer.

Jokanovic said: "I want to use all my squad and in this way some of the young players will be part of this competition."

Meanwhile, midfielder Ibrahima Cisse is hoping victory tonight can spark Fulham into life in the League, where they are yet to win so far.

"We are working hard in training, working hard each game to improve," said the 23-year-old Belgian. "Whether it's in the cup or the League — it's the same thing, there's no difference, we always want to win. It will be nice to play at home in front of our fans and look to get the win and look to press on in the competition."

Goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli is fit again following a hamstring problem and could make his first appearance of the season.
