Sessegnon steers England U17s to World Cup final

Fulham's Steven Sessegnon made a crucial goal as England's Under 17s beat Brazil in Kolkata this afternoon to reach Saturday's World Cup final.

The Young Lions defeated the highly-fancied Brazilians 3-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Liverpool forward Rhian Brewster to reach the final of the premier international age-group tournament for the first time in their history. Sessegnon, who has retained his place in the start since starting England's final group game against Iraq, recovered from a slow start – and receiving an early yellow card for a foul – to deliver another composed and adventurous performance from right back.

Just as England were coming under pressure after a piece from predatory finishing from Wesley cancelled out Brewster's early strike, Sessegnon made a 40 yard overlapping run down the right, received possession and tricked his way to the byline before pulling back a dangerous cross which Brewster converted from close range to restore England's lead before half-time. It was Sessegnon's third assist of the tournament and, despite being substituted as a precaution with twenty minutes to play, the Fulham youngster has every chance of starting the final against Spain.

Populous and Fulham FC reveal first rendering of proposed Riverside Stand development

A new rendering released by Populous shows how the stand has been designed with 'an iconic roof design' to better connect with the river / Populous

English football club Fulham FC has revealed fresh details of how it plans to create a new "leisure destination for use on match and non-match days" at the club's Craven Cottage stadium.

Global sports architects Populous have created a proposal for the club that its chair, Shahid Khan, claims will "transcend the customary standards of football grandstands" by "blending history and the contemporary like no stadium in the land or beyond".

The scheme would see the creation of riverside pubs and restaurants, event facilities, green spaces and public access to a river walk along the Thames, in addition to nine new apartments at either end of the site. The stand itself would be rebuilt with more seats, increasing the stadium's total capacity by 4,300 to 30,000. A new basement would make room for 'back of house' facilities and lounge space.

A new rendering released by Populous shows how the stand has been designed with "an iconic roof design" to better connect with the river. The architects were tasked with creating something sympathetic in scale to the adjoining stands and trees to the south, while reducing the impact of floodlighting on the river. They propose to achieve the latter by removing two existing floodlight masts and building a new system below the roof.

More new images are expected to be released next month.

The club initially secured planning permission to expand the Riverside Stand in 2013. It is currently in discussions with the council about its latest plans, and is collecting public feedback of the design – which has been on display at Craven Cottage. It seeks to submit an updated planning application at the end of November so that construction can begin early next year, and completed by 2021.

Studies have already taken place to measure the wind, noise and traffic impact of the scheme, with all found to be similar level to the previously approved plans.

In a statement, the club said: "Mr Khan wants a design based on a new concept that will deliver a wide range of benefits both now and for future generations. These include creating a high quality new stand for our fans and a world class leisure destination that significantly enhances the relationship with the River Thames."

Design firm Heatherwick Studio previously developed a broad concept for the Riverside Stand and its surrounding area as part of a business case study, but CLADglobal understands their involvement is now over, with Populous responding to a new brief.

By appointing Populous, Khan is reuniting with a firm he has worked with closely before. In May this year the practice completed a stadium extension for US National Football League (NFL) franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars – a team Khan also owns.

Populous have designed a number of London's major football grounds, including Wembley Stadium, in collaboration with Foster + Partners; Arsenal's Emirates Stadium; West Ham United's London Stadium; and Tottenham Hotspur's forthcoming new-look White Hart Lane.

The practice also completed the new Warners Stand at Lord's Cricket Ground in May this year.

Young Lions Reach Final

Steven Sessegnon helped England reach the Under-17 World Cup Final for the first time in their history on Wednesday.

The Young Lions defeated Brazil 3-1 in Kolkata, with Rhian Brewster hitting a hat-trick, to set up a Final showdown with either Spain or Mali on Saturday.

Sessegnon was given a fourth successive start at right-back and claimed his third assist of the tournament when he set up Liverpool striker Brewster's second goal.

The youngster picked up a booking during the game and was taken off as a precaution in the 70th minute, with Timothy Eyome coming on to replace him.

After the game, Sessegnon tweeted: "WORLD CUP FINAL HERE WE COME!! 3-1 vs Brazil - happy to contribute with another assist!"

READING, NORWICH AND FULHAM: THESE CLUBS NEED TO PURSUE THIS WEST HAM MAN

When it comes to getting promoted in the Championship, goals, as ever in football, are of a vital importance to any hopeful side.

Of course, a strong defence is important too but there's only so long a back-three or back-four can hold out and even if they do, 46 0-0's won't get you into the play-off places.

Bringing in a new striker, then, always creates excitement around a fan-base and, with that in mind, we'd argue Reading, Fulham and Norwich all need to bring in a new forward.

The three sides have had contrasting results this season with Norwich looking the most likely for a top six spot but, rather astonishingly, they've all conceded the same amount of goals, they're just not getting enough.

That suggests, then, that a good forward signing could propel any of the three further into top six contention and that is where Toni Martinez comes in.

The young West Ham talent is certainly highly-rated amongst the Hammers' faithful and they would certainly like him to break into their side before too long.

It doesn't look like they'll get that wish this season, though, and so one of our mentioned three clubs should take a punt.

Martinez would surely be the main man for both Fulham and Reading with them set-up well to just need that focal point up top to score goals.

Norwich, meanwhile, could combine Martinez with Nelson Oliveria and that, on the face of it, could be truly potent.

Martinez is an exciting talent, and the three should vie to offer him a platform.

Fulham FC Unveils Details of 'Emerging Proposals' for Riverside Stand
And asks residents for comments as it prepares planning application to council

Fulham Football Club has unveiled details of "emerging proposals" for the design of the redeveloped Riverside Stand online, following two public exhibitions earlier this month.

Details of Fulham FC's new riverside stand

The club says the new design delivers a quality riverside development – more than just a football stand next to the river. Consistent with the 2013 approved scheme, the proposal will include:

1. More seating for fans (not exceeding the 30,000 approved capacity)

2. A riverside walk following the approved line

3. Apartments at either end of the stand to create activity (nine are proposed)

It will also include:

1. A new design that better connects with the river

2. Restaurants, bars and other uses to create a leisure destination for use on match and non-match days

3. An iconic roof design

4. A basement for 'back of house' facilities and lounge space.

The club adds, of the effects of the proposal on the local community:

1. Wind: Testing is underway. Initial results show the wind effects will be similar to the approved scheme.

2. Noise: Similar to the approved scheme on matchdays. On non-matchdays more active use of the building will be managed to respect our neighbours.

3. Jobs & Community: New jobs and investment will be created in the local area. The restaurants and bars will be available for the local community.

4. Traffic: Similar to the approved scheme on matchdays. On non-matchdays the proposed restaurants and bars will encourage trips outside of peak hours and traffic will be a fraction of that on matchdays.

5. Lighting: Two existing floodlight masts will be removed and a new floodlighting system provided below the proposed roof. The additional glazing and increased non-matchday use will be managed through careful selection of materials to minimise light spill.

Announcing the new proposals last month, Fulham FCchairman Shahid Khan used gardening analogies to explain his vision. "We are a club with ambition to grow, but to grow you must protect and never damage your roots," he said.

He pledged that a new stand would be 'iconic and beautiful', blending history and modernity and added: "It won't be long before we'll be sharing some of the architectural elements and designs."

You can see full details of the proposals and give the club your views here.

The club say after considering feedback over the next month, it intends to submit a planing application to Hammersmith & Fulham Council before Christmas.

Once a formal application has been submitted, residents will be able to tell the council what they think about the club's plans during the formal consultation period after Christmas.

If permission is granted, Fulham FC hopes to begin construction of the new stand last next year with completion expected in 2021

Ayite To Start On The Right Side: Strongest 4-3-3 Fulham Line-Up To Face Bolton On Saturday

Predicted Fulham Line-up To Face Bolton Wanderers In The EFL Championship
Slavisa Jokanovic's side are, rather annoyingly for fans, in a very similar position to that of a year ago, with no appreciable improvement in their promotion chances.

A 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa last time was frustrating for travelling fans and the West London side are looking to rectify things now at home against a struggling Bolton Wanderers side. We should see a 4-3-3 formation in evidence at Craven Cottage, with the following personnel most likely to be sent into battle:

Formation: 4-3-3
Manager: Slavisa Jokanovic
GK – David Button
Part of a solid and settled back five, though it is not one which is proving entirely successful just at the moment.

RB – Ryan Fredericks
The attacking right-back complements Sessegnon nicely and backs up his forwards out wide, though there is always the danger of him being caught on the break.

CB – Tomas Kalas
Important to the set-up, his partnership with Ream is now a well established one.

CB – Tim Ream
Brings tons of experience to the line-up and will need to stay disciplined this time.

LB – Ryan Sessegnon
I'm still adamant he is wasted at left-back given the amount of talent he possesses, but he remains important to the side even in this position.

RCM – Tom Cairney
Would probably appreciate a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-2-3-1 to play in the middle and be seen to best effect. However, the midfielder can still make a huge impact if he starts the game in this 4-3-3.

CM – Kevin McDonald
Highly rated by Jokanovic and the club, McDonald should start this game as a part of the midfield three.

LCM – Stefan Johansen
Another very important player, Johansen creeps forward and gets very important goals from midfield and has previously worked very well with Cairney.

RW – Floyd Ayite
Should start again and can form a part of a reasonably potent front three, though not one currently striking fear into the opposition.

LW – Aboubakar Kamara
Just like Ayite, Kamara is ticking along fine but Fulham would be much better served by throwing Sessegnon into this position.

ST – Rui Fonte
Caused relief when finally filling Fulham's apparent problem position. However, with 1 goal in 8 Championship games, the Portuguese has been far from prolific. He may yet find the net against a weak Bolton though.
