Old Sod's Army-Latest TOOFIF

Danni, just read your excellent article in the latest TOOFIF. I agree just about 101%. Allan Clarke was phenomenal. So frail in physique but you would never knock him off the ball. A cocky sod but a cocky sod who delivered. Didn't like it when he took a side swipe at Johnny Haynes when he left, no doubt the new generation with little regard for the ageing former one. Perhaps this is why Malcolm MacDonald was sold so early and suddenly.
Three players to add though....Alan Mullery. Mullers was just about the most enthusiastic footballer ever to play for the club and a magnificent player also. Him and Moore took us to Wembley.
Roy Bentley. Came from our old mates as a number nine but was soon switched to centre half. He is still in my best ever line up in that position. Hard as nails and Johnny Haynes said he was the most important player we signed. I used to go to junior school with his daughter and he used to pick her up after the classes. He was enormous to me then! He is the last living member of the England side that lost to the USA in a World Cup game in 1950.
Danny Murphy. For someone who shuffled round midfield he could control a game. After Johnny Haynes, Alan Mullery he is my most influential captain. As a pundit he talks a lot of sense and is a deep thinker on the game.  Towards the end of his  playing days we were losing 1-0 up at Old Trafford and not looking good. He came on with 20 mins to go and turned the game on its head. He was flattened by Carrick in the area and we got nothing as usual!

As well you mention my favourite collective front 5. Stevens, Robson, Jezzard, Haynes, Mitten. 065.gif and I saw the lot!! 049:gif

Thnak you and good night

Whilst no one person is bigger than the forum, this place isn't the same since the boi named Danny left  :Haynes The Maestro:  9739.gif

Agree with you bog on that front five , all of them great players but I am always tempted to put Tosh on the left wing , just for fun.
Can you imagine what the value of that line up would be at today's transfer prices.

As you say what would they be worth! All could have played for England. Charlie edges Tosh for me purely as he would have played 40 times for England if he had not ruffled the FA's feathers. I do recommend a read of 'The Bogota Bandit'.
