Under-18s battle to draw with Fulham

Norwich City's Under-18s produced a spirited display at Motspur Park to draw 2-2 with Fulham in the U18 Premier League on Saturday.

Timmy Abraham opened the scoring for Fulham on 20 minutes when he converted Cameron Thompson's pass from the right-hand side.

City responded 14 minutes later when Idah got in-front of his marker at the near post to guide a corner into the back of net.

The returning Rui Da Costa gave City the lead just before half-time, capitalising on a mistake from Scott Armsworth, but Fulham equalised shortly after the restart through Nicolas Santos-Clase.

1-1 was how it finished in west London and the young Canaries' focus now turns to the Premier League Cup when they host Manchester City on Saturday at Colney (11.30am).

City XI: Dickerson; Parsons, Richardson, Payne, Barnes; Mehmeti, Lomas; Da Costa, Hutchinson (Frei 33), Thompson-Brissett; Idah

Subs not used: Hale-Brown, Idehan, Omotoye, Quantrell

Goals: Idah, Da Costa

Tottenham believe Ryan Sessegnon is ideal replacement for Danny Rose if he leaves the club

Tottenham Hotspur see Ryan Sessegnon as the ideal replacement for Danny Rose if the England left-back leaves the club.

Rose is expected to leave Spurs after criticising the club's wage structure in the summer and falling behind Ben Davies in manager Mauricio Pochettino's pecking order.

Having described himself as "fuming" to have been left out of the North London derby defeat to Arsenal, Rose was also dropped from Pochettino's squad for the draw with West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

Pochettino confirmed Rose was not injured and that he was instead working on his fitness, having failed to offer any reassurances over the 27-year-old's future a few days earlier.

Manchester United's interest in signing Rose, either in January or at the end of the season, has raised the prospect of Luke Shaw moving in the opposite direction to work with Pochettino again.

But Fulham wonderkid Sessegnon is seen as the perfect addition to Tottenham's squad, particularly if Rose leaves.

Tottenham made enquiries about Sessegnon towards the end of the summer transfer window, but received no encouragement from Fulham.

The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract with Fulham in June, but the Championship club will struggle to hold on to him for another season if they fail to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

United, Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested in Sessegnon, who this month became the first 17-year-old to score a hat-trick in one of the four top divisions in English football since Dele Alli.

There is no buy-out clause in Sessegnon's contract, which means Fulham will be able to demand around £30million for the youngster if his form continues.

But Tottenham believe Pochettino's record of bringing through talented English youngsters puts them in a strong position for Sessegnon's signature.

Telegraph: Tottenham eye £30m-rated goalscoring teenager as potential Danny Rose replacement

Tottenham have set their sights on Fulham prospect Ryan Sessegnon as a potential successor for current full-back Danny Rose, according to a report.

The Telegraph claims that the England international is set to leave the North London club following his comments about the club in the summer and also failing to secure a regular place in the starting lineup on his return to injury.

The newspaper reports that Manchester United are interested in snapping up Rose and Spurs believe that Fulham's 17-year-old would be the perfect candidate to replace him.

The report claims Tottenham approached the Championship side about the teenager's availability during the summer but a move failed to materialise.

Fulham will reportedly set an asking price of around £30million for the youngster with fellow top-flight rivals United, Liverpool and Chelsea also keen to secure his signature.

Although he has been deployed as a left full-back, Sessegnon has proven himself to be a serious attacking threat, notching up seven goals and producing five assists in all competitions last season.

The teenager has continued his fine goalscoring form this season, contributing with his first ever hat-trick for Fulham against Sheffield United last week.

Sessegnon currently has three years remaining on his contract at Craven Cottage.

Football Insider verdict
Tottenham supporters will surely be disappointed with the prospect of once again losing one of their top players to Premier League rivals after Kyle Walker signed for Manchester City in the summer. However, Sessegnon has already demonstrated that he has the potential to become one of the finest full-backs in the country and he would be an ideal player to step up if Rose decides to leave Tottenham. Spurs boss Pochettino has a fantastic record of developing English youngster into top players and under his guidance, Sessegnon could potentially become a regular for the England national team in the foreseeable future.

Report: Tottenham see Ryan Sessegnon as ideal Danny Rose replacement, believe they're in strong position to land Fulham left-back

The Fulham left-back is said to have been the subject of enquiries from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.

According to the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur see Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon as the ideal replacement for Danny Rose.

And the report claims that, due to the record Mauricio Pochettino has of developing English talent, Spurs believe they are in a 'strong position' to land Sessegnon - ahead of rivals clubs Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

According to the Telegraph, Rose is 'expected' to leave Tottenham in January, 'after criticising the club's wage structure in the summer and falling behind Ben Davies in manager Pochettino's pecking order'.

United have also been linked with a move for Rose, prompting rumours of a possible swap deal involving the 27-year-old and another England left-back, Luke Shaw - who Pochettino knows from Southampton.

However, the Telegraph reports that Sessegnon - for whom Spurs are said to have made enquiries in August - is seen as the perfect addition, having impressed since his breakthrough last season.

The report claims Fulham will be able to demand around £30 million for the 17-year-old 'if his form continues', adding that there is no buy-out clause in his contract.

Tottenham hired Sessegnon's old teammate Scott Parker to their coaching staff last summer. The England Under-19 international previously told the Daily Mail: "Everyone has helped me, but in particular Scott Parker, 100 per cent. What a person to be around, a great player and just a great human being."

U18s Travel To Leicester

The Under-18s travel to Leicester City on Tuesday to take on the Foxes in the final group match of the Premier League Cup. Kick off is 1pm at the Leicester City Training Ground.

The Young Whites top the group on six points having beaten Aston Villa at Motspur Park, and then won at the Tottenham Hotspur Training Centre.

Both Leicester and Spurs have three points, and therefore a draw will be enough to guarantee top spot and a place in the knock out stages.

The group winners go through to the quarter-finals, as do the top two runners up.

These two sides came up against each other a fortnight ago in the Premier League South, the match finished 2-2 as Leicester came from behind to salvage a point with virtually the last kick of the match.

In Fulham's most recent match on Saturday they endured another 2-2 draw, this time to Norwich City. The Young Whites came from behind, but were not able to find a winner in dominant display.

Leicester won their match this weekend in the Premier League South, beating Swansea City 3-1 at home.

Omogbehin: Dominant Force

Under-18s' Head Coach Colin Omogbehin spoke to fulhamfc.com after their 2-2 draw to Norwich City on Saturday in the Premier League South.

"This match was slightly more frustrating than last week's draw", Omogbehin commented. "I thought we were the dominant force again, especially on chances created.

"We had control of the game, and then all of a sudden we started doing things a bit too slow, being a bit sloppy and casual which allowed the opposition to get a foothold in the game, so it was frustrating.

"Whereas last week it was quite close and we worked hard, it was a battle that we edged. This time I thought we were in control of the match and it's always disappointing to concede at a set-piece considering how hard we work at them."

Fulham scored straight from the restart after half time, with Nicolas Santos-Clase striking a Cameron Thompson cross into the back of the net.

"There was a response after half-time. As a team, for us to be at our best we always have to be on the front foot against opposition, and when we are not we are easy to play against in my opinion.

"We have to start things right and make sure we are competing, in the second half we did that and there was only one team in it.

"We had a number of opportunities to score, the game was mainly played in their half and that's what we are about.

"For some reason, maybe it was a lapse in concentration, maybe it was going 1-0 up quite early on, but we took our foot off and we made it more difficult for ourselves."

The Young Whites have scored 28 goals in 13 matches this season to date, only failing to score against Aston Villa in a league defeat.

"If you look at the goals we've scored this season, we are always going to score goals. It's rare we haven't scored this season," he said.

"Again, I think we have enough players, different type of players that can score goals.

"We have to start scoring these chances and putting matches to bed, and to stop conceding sloppy goals or having lapses in concentration."

The games come thick and fast for the Young Whites with their next match on Tuesday afternoon at Leicester City.

"Tuesday we are back to the Premier League Cup, if we draw or win we are through to the quarter-finals, so that's a good position to be in.

"We played Leicester last week in a 2-2 draw, a very hard-fought game. We had chances we created and we expect another tough game.

"Hopefully if we can put our chances away and defend better we will find ourselves to be in the quarter-final.

"We take each game as it comes, we're interested in any competition that comes our way and we always try to be competitive and get positive results, we will be up for the challenge."

Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon is Tottenham's top target to potentially replace Danny Rose

Ryan Sessegnon has continued to improve for Fulham this season

Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon is Tottenham's number one left-back target to potentially replace Danny Rose, Sky Sports News understands.

Although Rose has patched up his relationship with manager Mauricio Pochettino following his summer outburst, the 27-year-old's long-term future at Spurs remains uncertain.

Rose was left out of the matchday squad for the second successive Premier League game on Saturday and Pochettino insists he has been protecting his fitness as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury.

Rose started against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week and is expected to play against Leicester on Tuesday, but he recently stated he was "fuming" at being dropped from the squad to play Arsenal.

Spurs have been interested in the 17-year-old Sessegnon for more than a year and made a number of inquiries into his availability over the summer, last January, and the summer of 2016, according to Sky sources.

Pochettino is understood to be a huge fan of the England U19, who established himself in Fulham's first-team last season and then signed his first pro-deal at Craven Cottage. He can play anywhere on the left-hand side.

Manchester United's Luke Shaw, with whom Pochettino worked at Southampton, is understood to be the second-choice-target.

Shaw has struggled with injuries since joining United in a £27m deal in 2014 and has been unable to break into Jose Mourinho's plans ahead of Ashley Young, but Pochettino would be confident of rediscovering the 22-year-old's potential.

United were also one of two clubs along with Chelsea that Rose was keen to join if Spurs had let him leave in the summer, Sky Sports News understands, but Mourinho is also thought to be a Sessegnon admirer.

Tottenham Hotspur must move for Ryan Sessegnon before somebody else does

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been monitoring Fulham full-back Ryan Sessegnon for two years.

According to The Gambling Times, Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon is Tottenham Hotspur's top target to replace Danny Rose who could leave in the next transfer window.

The Gambling Times reports that 27-year-old Rose will be sold in January after a fallout with manager Mauricio Pochettino, and that Manchester United want to sign him.

England youth international Sessegnon, only 17 years old, has already played 50 times for Fulham's senior side and has scored a mightily impressive 11 goals from the left flank.

he Gambling Times adds that Spurs have been scouting Sessegnon for two years already, but they must move fast while they are in pole position to sign the talented teenager.

Sessegnon is likely to be on the radar of all of England's top clubs, with Chelsea, Liverpool and even Manchester City all in need of an upgrade or cover in the left-back department.

Due to Mauricio Pochettino's record of developing young players and their London location, Spurs would probably be Sessegnon's preferred destination should a move arise now.

However, the more time that passes, the higher Sessegnon's price tag will rise and that will even the playing field to give Tottenham's rivals a better chance of signing the player.

Sessegnon is producing Gareth Bale-esque numbers at such a young age and Spurs would be kicking themselves if they missed out on the perfect long-term successor to Rose.

Tottenham in pole position to sign Sessegnon

Tottenham are set to reignite their bid to sign Fulham sensation Ryan Sessegnon even though his asking price has rocketed to £30million, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim Spurs are keeping a close eye on the 17-year-old and believe he would be the ideal replacement for Danny Rose amid speculation the left-back could leave the club.

The Telegraph claim the Premier League giants still want Sessegnon despite a failed approach for him in the summer, when he chose to sign a new three-year deal at Craven Cottage and carry on playing at Championship level.

It is said that Tottenham are confident they are in a "strong position" to land Sessegnon and believe that manager Mauricio Pochettino's record of develop young English players gives them a major advantage.

Good move for Tottenham?
All the signs are that Sessegnon is that rarity, a young English player whose potential is off the scale. The Londoner has created a lot of buzz since his debut senior campaign ended with him named in the Championship team of the season, a stunning achievement for someone who did not even turn 17 until May. The word at Fulham since Sessegnon was 14 was that they had a player on their hands who was the best graduate yet of an academy that has also produced Moussa Dembele and Patrick Roberts in recent seasons. The youngster has been a regular for Fulham this season, swapping between left-back and left midfield on an almost match-by-match basis. His hat-trick in last week's 5-4 win at Sheffield United was further proof of his amazing talent.

This Is Futbol rating: 9/10

Likely to happen?
There is a stampede of interest in the left-sided flyer with the world at his feet. Liverpool and Manchester United have been strongly linked with Sessegnon, and Tottenham will have to pay big money as well as seduce the teenager with a plan to make the most of his immense talent. Pochettino will be key. The Argentine has a proven track record for developing young players and knows how to make stars rather than simply buy them.

Why Fulham Over QPR Would Be The Ideal Destination For This 20-year Old Ligue 1 Midfielder

Christopher NKunku

Why Fulham Over QPR Would Be The Ideal Destination For Christopher NKunku
According to reports in Europe, West London Championship clubs Fulham and Queens Park Rangers are both interested in trying to lure Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Christopher N'Kunku during the January transfer window.

Despite the club's huge profile and newly found status – the favourites to win the Champions League, the 20-year-old NKunku is struggling for game time and has apparently told the Ligue 1 club that he wishes to leave in the next transfer window, alerting the two playoff hopefuls in England.

NKunku was born near Paris and supported PSG as a youngster and has represented his country at under-16, under-19 and under-20 levels. Despite his talent, he has found himself down the pecking order due to the influx of top expensive talent brought in by the club's owners, such as Mbappe and Neymar.

To his great credit, the young midfielder appears not to relish the thought of sitting on the bench over playing in the reserves every week and wishes to come to England in order to enhance his ability and move his career forward.

He does have some top league experience, playing 8 times in Ligue 1 last season and even playing some minutes in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk back in December 2015.  He has slipped backwards in the queue at the Parc des Princes though and is looking for a way out.

The English Championship has become increasingly desirable of late, helped in no small way by Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez's participation last season before some fine signings by Wolverhampton Wanderers this time around.

Both Fulham and QPR could arguably give NKunka a good leg up in the game, though one clearly has a better chance of reaching the playoffs than the other. Fulham are that side of course, especially now that Slavisa Jokanovic has gone back to a 4-2-3-1, playing Ryan Sessegnon as a part of the three supporting attackers.

The only issue would once again be the competition for places, with Fulham likely to want to show a strength in telling the young man that he cannot walk straight into the team with the likes of Norwood, McDonald and Johansen all vying for the same role.

With that in mind, the player may well think to himself: "why would I sit on the bench in Fulham when I can sit on the bench in Paris"?

However, any subterfuge aside, it's clear that he would enhance their promotion possibilities and in return, he gets to play every week and feel truly valued.

Odoi feels Fulham confidence returning
by Dan on November 27, 2017

Defender Denis Odoi feels Fulham's confidence is returning after seven points from a possible nine in a week lifted the Whites into the top half of the Championship table.

The versatile Belgian, who followed up two assured displays in his preferred left-back role with another strong performance at centre half as he deputised for the injured Tim Ream, believes that Saturday's narrow win over a competitive Millwall side has helped boost morale around the Fulham squad as they look ahead to this weekend's west London derby against Brentford. After the final whistle on Saturday, he told FulhamFC TV:

I think if we had dropped a lot of points this week it would have been hard for us to look up there [towards the top six]. Obviously, we need to take it step by step. We cannot get ahead of ourselves. You also feel something changing within the group, but I told everybody before the game that this is an important game because if we lose today, the win from Tuesday was all for nothing. Now we can maybe look up there, but next week is another game, we have a few competitors and I think we should be able to get three points.

Everybody was obviously a bit down after the losses we had before the international break. Everyone was disappointed about the result, about the way things were going and now with seven points out of nine, it's good for the morale.

Odoi was delighted with the much-needed three points, secured via Ollie Norwood's first half spot-kick, and a precious clean sheet at Craven Cottage, which was Fulham's first in the league at home since January.

It's always good to get a win at the Cottage – especially this season it's been hard for us to get a win at the Cottage. We're obviously happy with the three points, but we're a bit disappointed about the second half, but it's good to get two wins in a row.

We had a clean sheet against Leeds, but at the Cottage it had been a long time. Obviously, we play offensive football and the downside from that is that we get a lot of goals against [us]. Obviously we're happy with the nil today and we need to build on that.

The popular 29 year-old is happy to be considered a versatile member of the Fulham squad, having made his name as a left back when he broke through to the first team at Oud-Herverlee Leuven, and was pleased to turn in a strong display at the heart of the defence – similar to his performances at Reading and Leeds – after Ream was ruled out with a problem picked up at Sheffield United.

Also in Belgium, that's how they know me. It doesn't really matter for me – obviously I have my favourite positions – I would say left back – but I just try to do my best and if it is centre back, left back or right back then that's the way it is. Most of my career – I would say 65% I've played as a left back – so I'm most used to play as a left back. Obviously when I was younger I played as right full back but when I came into the first team at the highest level, I started playing left back and I played most of my games at left back so that's why I prefer it.

Odoi was pleased that Fulham managed to resist Millwall's more direct approach in the second half, even if Jokanovic's men were disappointed that they couldn't dominate possession as much as they did before the break.

We knew they were going to play that way. They obviously have big guys up front and that's the way they play but [in the] first half we had possession and we managed to keep the ball and play a little bit of football. In the second half, I think we forgot to do that and we had difficulty playing football and then they had the ball and obviously they were going to keep hitting long balls.

Spurs and Ryan Sessegnon – much ado about nothing
by Sarah Woolmer on November 28, 2017

You might not admire Daniel Levy, but have to chuckle at his consistency. Tottenham have just lost the north London derby, when the punditocracy was beginning to talk of the famed gap between the red and white sides of the rivalry growing in their direction, and drew disappointingly with West Brom at the weekend. There are a few rumbles in the fan base and some supporters have even questioned whether Mauricio Pochettino, one of the most progressive coaches in the game, is all that.

Levy is a master of communication and subterfuge well beyond the world of sport – famed for pulling off great deals. Fulham fans of course have bitter experience of how he snared Mousa Dembele at the last knockings of the 2012 transfer window and would, therefore, have eyed yesterday morning's Telegraph report that Spurs had installed Ryan Sessegnon as their one number one target to replace the 'fuming' Danny Rose with great trepidation. Given the way the modern sports media works, it was soon blasting around cyperspace, social media and leading Sky Sports News, with a special package heading the hourly bulletin.

As ever, the substance behind the story is difficult to find. Levy and Spurs did their best to try and rattle Fulham earlier in the year, briefing to the same paper that they'd placed a £25m bid for Sessegnon, having been one of a host of leading clubs disappointed when one of the country's most coveted young players signed his first professional contract with a Championship club. No formal offer was received by Fulham – this was merely a test balloon floated to see if whispers of teaming up with Tottenham and Pochettino could tempt the teenager away.

Sessegnon, who along with his twin brother Steven has been with Fulham since the age of eight, was mature enough to recognise that, whilst he could have easily swapped Motspur Park for a Premier League club in the summer off the back of his astonishing exploits during his breakthrough season in senior football, learning his craft at a club committed to providing the pathway through to the first team for their young starlets was best for his development. He's been a regular in Slavisa Jokanovic's side this season, starting at left back, and scored that sensational hat-trick at Sheffield United – which seems to have started off a new round of frenzied speculation.

Matt Law's piece proclaims that Sessegnon is above Luke Shaw in Pochettino's pecking order to replace Rose, who is apparently destined to join Manchester United in January. The report builds on the Mail's revelation at the weekend that there's no minimum release fee clause in the deal that Sessegnon signed over the summer, but adds that Fulham struggle to retain the youngster should they fail to reach the Premier League in May, which seems like a bold claim given that he was happy to sign on after the play-off heartbreak. Why might this link come now, at a time when Spurs are worried about being left behind in the league again? Could it be because Manchester United have been linked with a £35m move for Sessegnon in the new year?

Perhaps the most intriguing part comes at the end, where Law writes:

But Tottenham believe Pochettino's record of bringing through talented English youngsters puts them in a strong position for Sessegnon's signature.

Pochettino has undoubtedly cultivated the talents of Harry Kane, Dele Ali and Harry Winks in the past couple of years, but you don't have to cast your mind back too far to see how Spurs' jettisoned the careers of several English talents. Sessegnon could just ask the last local boy to come through the academy – a midfielder who played in all four divisions for the club, represented England at youth level, and enjoyed cult hero status with the fans.

Sean Davis had his head turned at the height of his powers and, after a standoff, swapped west London for White Hart Lane, whereupon his promising career failed to take off. The man who amassed 188 appearances for the Whites, scoring goals at Blackburn and at home to Sheffield Wednesday that ensured Fulham would return to the Premier League having been given his senior debut by Micky Adams as he was resurrecting the club in the bottom tier four years earlier, would tell Sessegnon to learn from his experience and stay put.

Fortunately, Fulham's hottest property is a man whose maturity and intelligence belies his tender years. He has a genuine appreciation for the club that have given him and his Steven their chance to shine and clearly loves the affinity developing between him and the Fulham fans. That doesn't mean to say we can book in his testimonial at Craven Cottage for 2026 but it might suggest that we are dealing with a different character to Moussa Dembele, who moved to Celtic for a nominal fee two years ago, having benefited from the Motspur Park finishing school or even Pat Roberts.

The best summation of Sessegnon's career prospects came in this weekend's Football League paper from Adam Virgo (pictured left), who advised Gareth Southgate to consider picking the Fulham prospect in his next England squad. That might be a little premature considering Sessegnon hasn't even had an under-21 call-up yet, but if Southgate, who knows his history, wants to return from Russia with silverware next summer he will have to fast track a Fulham player into his plans at some point.
