Göttingen Final Day

Fulham's Under-19s finished fourth at the 2018 Sparkasse & VGH Cup after getting knocked out in the semi-final to eventual champions Manchester United.

It was a long last day for the Young Whites who played five matches, winning their first three. Fulham went on a nine match winning streak, and scored 39 goals throughout the tournament.

The first match was against FC Bruges and Fulham won 3-1.

Bruges had the first couple of chances shooting from range before Jaydn Mundle-Smith and Ryan De Havilland a few efforts of their own saved. The teams looked evenly matches in the first few minutes of play.

A minute later and Tyrese Francois played the ball wide from sweeper, Sonny Hilton dropped deep and took the ball forward as Francois split the defence. Hilton slammed an effort bottom left to break the deadlock.

Fulham looked more comfortable after that, Spence rifled a ball on goal and that was saved as Fulham started dominating possession.

6 minutes in, Francois brought the ball forward once more. He shot from inside the opposition half, and the ball ricocheted off a Belgian player and backfired into his own net to level the match at 1-1.

Nicolas Santos-Clase came on in the next play and only needed on shot to put the Young Whites in the driving seat for a second time in the tie.

With five minutes left in the match De Havilland played a ball on the sideboard into the area for Santos-Clase and his feet were clipped for a penalty. The Spaniard took it himself and smashed a shot into the left to make it 3-1 to Fulham.

Fulham expertly saw out the rest of the match, keeping the ball and were organised in defence when needed.

Next up were Hamburg in the final qualifier of the tournament and the Young Whites only needed a point to get through, but a win would give them a favourable draw and Fulham impressively put the Germans to the sword early on.

It took Francois 13 seconds to score, he walked cagily up the pitch and smashed his effort into the top right corner with the keeper rooted to ground to give Fulham the lead.

Joe Felix almost made it two by winning the ball and used a coupled of step overs to beat the defence but the keeper got a touch to keep the shotout. It didn't take Felix long though, in the next play a ball came out wide for him and he fired Fulham to a second.

Two and a half minutes into the match and De Havilland struck from 10 yards out after some good build up play from the Whites to make it 3-0.

Hilton made it four at the end of the third minute, the rampant Young Whites were in complete control of the tie.

Dan Martin scored the fifth in the fourth minute, Francois with a cutting ball found Martin on the right and he shot hard and low.

Julian Schwarzer was beaten twice in the ninth minute but the match was too far gone for the Germans to get anything out of the match and Fulham saw out the tie 5-2 winners.

Fulham breezed through the quarter-final against JFV West having won the favourable draw in a 4-0 win. The local German side made it difficult with some excellent goal keeping and the 3000 strong crowd cheering them on.

Santos-Clase however made the breakthrough after a barrage of shots and saves. De Havilland smashed a second tight to the touchline to give the Young Whites some breathing room, then one more from distance and Reece York slotted one more to cap off the game in the final minute.

Manchester United were waiting for Fulham in the semi-final, both teams with impressive records in the competition, neither having dropped a point throughout the week.

Jose Garrido made a crucial goal line clearance followed by a block in the first minute, but Mason Greenwood found the net from a tight angle 20 seconds later to give the Red Devils the lead.

Garrido shot himself three minutes in and a slight deflection took it over the bar. Felix also stole the ball and played up to De Havilland who chipped towards an empty net but his effort just went high.

The pressure was from United, but Fulham were having good chances in the match. Santos-Clase got a shot away only to be saved by James Thompson, and Martin also had an effort saved at the near post in the edgy tie.

Manchester United's Ethan Galbraith clipped Fulham's cross bar with a speculative effort in the match and De Havilland had another effort creep wide towards an empty net on the break.

With four and a half minutes left on the clock Manchester United's high press caught Fulham and Greenwood dispatched his second of the match to put them in control. Fulham pressed till the end but could not break down the United defence.

Fulham would go onto the third place play-off against local side Hannover, losing the tie 3-2 after losing a player to a sin bin and also a questionable penalty decision against the Young Whites.

U23s Travel To Aston Villa

Fulham travel to Aston Villa on Monday 8th January in the return to the PL2 after the winter break. Peter Grant's Under-23s will play at Villa Park in a 7pm kick off.

The Whites were due to face league leaders Middlesbrough away before the fixture break, however, a frozen pitch meant that the match was postponed and yet to be played.

The Whites have the league's best form, having won five consecutive matches before they drew their last match 1-1 at Motspur Park to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Aston Villa won their previous match before Christmas 4-1 in a local derby as they travelled to nearby West Bromwich Albion.

Villa have won three and lost two of their last five matches, they are two places above the Whites at third in the PL2 Division 2 table.

A win for Grant's side would bring them just one point off the Villains, and further secure their grip on the play-off spots.

Last time these two sides met back in August Villa ran out 3-2 winners after a very close game played at Craven Cottage.

Fulham's top scorer Elijah Adebayo grabbed his first league goal of the season against Villa in the 5th minute to equalise after the Whites conceded early on. Fulham would go on to equalise again in the 75th minute before Harvey Knibbs scored the winner for the visitors.

You can follow all live updates from the match on the Club's official twitter page, @FulhamFC.

Fulham set to seal deal for Premier League player

Southampton left-back Matt Targett is set to join Championship side Fulham in a loan-switch that will see the defender play at Craven Cottage for the next six-months, according to The Sun.

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic has been lining-up a replacement for left-back Ryan Sessegnon as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs continue to be linked with a move for the defender.

The Southampton defender has already proved his Premier League credentials after making a flurry of appearances in the Saints campaign last time out. But since the start of this season, the 22-year-old has struggled to force a regular place with the impressive Ryan Bertrand keeping him at bay.

Indeed, the Saints defender has seen himself stagnate under the guidance of Mauricio Pellegrino this campaign, with only 2 appearances in the Premier League to show for the left-back.

After being awarded the Young Player of the Year award from the 2014-15 season, Matt Targett will be hoping that a successful loan spell at Craven Cottage will reward him with a regular place back in the Southampton side.

The verdict
Would be a very good replacement for Sessegnon.

Matt Targett has already shown his worth in the Premier League and on an international level, as a player that consistently provides performances of the highest-order.

Offering the same attacking flare that Ryan Sessegnon provides down the left, the ability to get forward into crossing positions will go along way to replicating the efforts of their current left-back.

Nevertheless, a good addition with a player who's hungry to succeed and prove his parent club wrong.

Fulham set to complete loan move for Premier League full-back

Fulham look set to complete the loan signing of Southampton youngster Matt Targett until the end of the season.

The England Under-21 international has only played for the Saints twice this season as Mauricio Pellegrino appears to favour Sam McQueen as cover for Ryan Bertrand.

It is believed that Cottagers boss Slavisa Jokanovic is looking for cover at left back, despite the sparkling form of star man Ryan Sessegnon.

17-year-old Sessegnon is attracting interest of his own, with Spurs believed to be winning the race for his signature despite apparent interest from European champions Real Madrid.

Targett picked up an injury at the start of the current season but has made his only Premier League appearances of the season over the Christmas period.

A loan move to last season's play-off semi finalists could well be on the cards for Targett as he looks to stake a claim for a place in Pellegrino's side next season.

Fulham are currently sat in 10th in the Sky Bet Championship, just three points behind 7th placed Sheffield United, who are knocking on the door of sixth-place and the play-off places.

Targett broke onto the Premier League scene back in 2014/2015 as he made 12 appearances for the Saints in an impressive first campaign.

Former Saints boss Ronald Koeman praised Targett after his debut season, saying he was impressed with the youngster's attitude:

"I was very happy with the way Targett trained and played in the under-21s. He's a young player and it's difficult for him because in front of him is an England international."

The academy graduate even went on to pick up the Southampton 'Young Player of the Year Award', thus becoming another exciting prospect to come out of the club's academy.

Fulham want Southampton's Matt Targett on loan

Matt Targett has made just two appearances for the Saints this season

Fulham are interested in signing Southampton left-back Matt Targett on loan for the rest of the season, Sky Sports News understands.

However, no deal has yet been agreed between the clubs.

Whites boss Slavisa Jokanovic wants another option at left-back as well as a centre-back and striker this month.

Slavisa Jokanovic spoke out against his club's transfer policy again this month

But he said last week that his opinion on transfers was continuing to be overlooked by the club hierarchy and suggested the club sack him if they do not value his opinion.

Targett, 22, is Saints' third-choice left-back behind Ryan Bertrand and Sam McQueen, with the latter making several appearances while Bertrand was injured in December.

Targett has made just two appearances this season and the Saints are keen to get him out for more game-time.

It was reported earlier in the window that Southampton were interested in a deal for Fulham left-back Ryan Sessegnon but Fulham do not intend to sell him this month.

Second-choice left-back Rafa Soares, who moved to Craven Cottage on a season-long loan in the summer, has failed to make an impact.

FIVE attackers Fulham could sign from Crystal Palace, Brighton, Leicester City and Burnley

We take a look at five attacking loan options for Fulham to boost promotion hopes

Fulham are looking to boost their squad numbers ahead of a play-off promotion push in the January transfer window.

Funds will be limited to bring in players permanently, so the Whites are likely to be looking closely at the loan market.

Southampton defender Matt Targett is one man linked with such a move for the rest of the season, with speculation refusing to go away in regards to Ryan Sessegnon's future.

Below, we have taken a look at attacking positions that Fulham could improve with experience from the Premier League.

These players have had limited game-time this season and are down the pecking order at their respective clubs, so they could reignite their season in the Championship?

CHUNG-YONG LEE

Burnley defender Matthew Lowton vies with Crystal Palace's South Korean midfielder Lee Chung-yong (Photo credit should read PAUL ELLIS/AFP/Getty Images)

The South Korean international has not had any regular game time in the last three years at Crystal Palace.

Having made his name in England with Bolton Wanderers, Lee can play anywhere across the midfield or in behind a lone striker.

Lee is desperate for games and has been monitored by Championship clubs over a move in the last 18 months.

A move to Fulham could be ideal, as he stays in London, gets a chance to boost his confidence again and be part of a potential promotion campaign.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old is out of contract this summer, so if he impresses then a permanent move could materialise.

SAM BALDOCK

Sam Baldock of Brighton & Hove Albion (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

The striker has just returned from a long-term injury on the south coast but isn't likely to be thrown into the deep end so soon in the top flight.

Brighton are in the market for another striker, which limits Baldock's chances even more. He scored 12 times for the Seagulls last year in their promotion season.

He has a wealth of Championship experience, scoring a number of goals in the process also at League One level before that. Brighton isn't too far either, so it would be ideal in terms of location.

Baldock's contract doesn't run out until 2020, so a loan move could give him the chance to play and score goals regularly again until the end of this season.

LEONARDO ULLOA

Leonardo Ulloa of Leicester City (Photo by Plumb Images/Leicester City FC via Getty Images)

The Argentine has proven experience at Championship level with Brighton previously and is way down the pecking order at Leicester City.

A loan move until the end of the season would be beneficial, although it could depend on any other exits in Leicester's frontline, with Islam Slimani linked to Watford and Newcastle United.

Ulloa, 31, is mobile for a big man up top and would certainly create problems for Championship defences.

So far this season, he has played just seven times in all competitions. Last year he featured in the Champions League for Leicester. In his two seasons with Brighton, he scored 26 goals in all competitions.

JORDAN MUTCH

Mutch hasn't lived up to his £5.5m price tag in three seasons with Palace and is surplus to requirements. It hasn't been the best move of his career so far and a fresh start is needed.

Similar to Chung-yong Lee, Mutch can play anywhere across the midfield or in a further forward role.

Mutch looked to have salvaged his Palace career last summer with an impressive pre-season, but that was far from the case and he has been left to play in the club's development squad.

Mutch was a big hit with Cardiff City in the Championship previously and also played briefly for Queens Park Rangers. He was on loan at Reading last season.

Mutch is most certainly a confidence player, and Fulham presents an excellent chance to get his career back on track. He is also out of contract this summer at Selhurst Park.

NAKHI WELLS

Nahki Wells of Burnley stretches for the ball (Photo by Gareth Copley/Getty Images)

A big hit at League One and Championship level, Wells signed for Burnley last summer for £5m. But he's hardly played for the Turf Moor outfit and a short-term loan move could benefit him until the summer.

Wells scored 49 goals for in all competitions for Huddersfield inside three seasons while they were a Championship club.

Certainly a clever and nippy striker, he would suit Fulham's style of play and would thrive on the service from the attacking full-backs.

Burnley have included him in their matchday squads in the last month, but he does have four other strikers to contend with in the north-west.

Championship rivals could affect Leeds move for Premier League man

Fulham are set to sign Southampton left-back Matt Targett on loan until the end of the season, according to the Sun, which could scupper Leeds United's move for Sam McQueen.

Targett and McQueen are both understudies to Ryan Bertrand at St Mary's and it is unlikely that Mauricio Pellegrino would let both men go and leave himself exposed in that area of the pitch.

Slavisa Jokanovic's men look further down the line with their move for Targett than Leeds do with McQueen and if that move to Craven Cottage is sealed then Leeds may be forced to look elsewhere.

Thomas Christiansen looks as if he is exploring other options as Laurens de Bock is due to have a medical at the club ahead of a move from Belgian outfit Club Brugges.

The Verdict
If the Targett deal to Fulham goes ahead as expected, then I am nearly certain Leeds will be left behind and forced to look elsewhere and move on from McQueen.

If they get De Bock, who has Champions League and Europa League experience, they won't mind so much, so long as the left back hits the ground running.

Ream: Small Margins

Tim Ream spoke of his disappointment to be knocked out of the FA Cup in the Third Round against Southampton but ultimately he was pleased the Whites gave a good account of themselves.

A goal from James Ward-Prowse in the first-half proved to be the winner for Southampton as they saw out a 1-0 victory at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Late chances for Lucas Piazon, Denis Odoi and Oliver Norwood failed to be converted while for Southampton, Jack Stephens' header hit the cross-bar midway through the second-half.

"We spoke after and we thought we played a fairly good match," said Ream. "There were a couple of half-chances and a couple of full-chances that we maybe could've done better with, but overall we are not disappointed by any means, we are disappointed to lose obviously, but not disappointed with the performance."

The Saints took their goal in the 29th minute after the Whites failed to deal with a long ball from Maya Yoshida and Sofiane Boufal got a foot on it before Ward-Powse's low drive.

Ream said: "Their goal comes from a ball that kind of pinballs around some shins and happens to fall perfectly for them and they finish it off.

"For us in the second-half when their 'keeper comes out and spills the ball and Denis hit one over and with Lucas Piazon the ball was just out of his reach.

"That's the difference and those are the small margins and unfortunately they didn't fall our way.

"Obviously we are frustrated and not pleased to be dropping out of the competition, that's the way the game goes, sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you don't.

"We didn't do enough to put the ball in the back of the net and when you do that you don't win games and move on."

Speaking on the calibre of opposition, Ream was very respectful of the Premier League side but admits that the Whites by no means embarrassed themselves.

"They had quality all over the pitch and they can bring quality on the pitch from the bench so obviously they are a good side and showed it with bits and pieces.

"It was important to us and we put out a very strong team and we wanted to give some guys minutes who will want to contribute in the league.

"Anyone can step in and the level doesn't drop, we showed that, we did some really good things and played some really good football.

"We did take it very seriously and wanted to win the match and towards the end there we were pushing to get the equaliser and at least get a tie out of it but now we switch our focus on the league and hopefully get promoted," said Ream.

Fulham's shining star circled by the big boys
Ryan Sessegnon said to be on the radar of a host of PL clubs

IT IS hard to see how Fulham can keep hold of the talented teenager Ryan Sessegnon as interest grows in the player. The midfielder shone once again despite his team losing 1-0 to Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon (January 6).

Whites manager Slavisa Jokanovic is very aware of the Premier League sharks circling their brightest prospect and with transfer assurances not forthcoming from owner Shahid Khan, he must wonder if the 17-year-old will be at Craven Cottage on February 1.

Although the home side were unable to get on the scoresheet against their top flight opponents, nearly all of their good work came via Sessegnon.

He linked up well with Denis Odi down the left and with seven league goals and four assists he is their top scorer and has been involved in 28% of their strikes.

While he was denied by Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and the post, his talent is clear for all to see. Quick, confident and always forward-thinking; he's one of the undoubted stars of the second tier with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United among those said to be watching his every move.

His importance to the team, club and more importantly, the fans is undeniable when you hear the sound the crowd elicits on every occasion that he touches the ball. It's makes sense to wonder if the fans obsession with him negatively affects his teammates in a stadium where most of the noise comes from the away supporters.

No one begrudges them cheering the starlet but the Championship's tenth placed team may perform better with the team being backed as much as the individual. Maybe their exuberant vocal support for the player is because they know they won't be cheering him in a Fulham kit for very long.

If so, they may be advised to enjoy the little wizard while he's one of their own because the day when he isn't seems like it will be sooner than they think.

Report: Swansea City keen on Fulham's Ryan Fredericks; available for £3m

Championship club Fulham could be forced to cash in on Premier League interest around Ryan Fredericks with Swansea and Stoke City needing a right-back.

Ryan Sessegnon is not the only full-back Fulham could struggle to keep hold of this month.

The Daily Mail states that flying right-sider Ryan Fredericks is a target for two Premier League clubs in the January transfer window – Swansea and Stoke City.

And while Fulham are holding all the cards with Sessegnon, free to demand a huge fee for the teenager after he agreed a three-year deal with the club back in June, it seems they may be railroaded into selling Fredericks sooner rather than later.

The jet-heeled 25-year-old is out of contract in the summer, meaning Fulham will now consider offers of around £3 million for one of the Championship's most exciting right-backs.

Swansea's interest should come as no surprise given that Kyle Naughton, who like Fredericks is a former Tottenham Hotspur defender, struggling for form this season. Meanwhile, Angel Rangel is 35 these days so a better back-up option is required.

Fredericks would also look a good addition for Stoke, who have had to throw the struggling youngster Tom Edwards into a baptism of fire in recent months due to the injury problems suffered by Glen Johnson.

Fredericks has been a regular in Fulham's starting XI this season, setting up four goals in 25 Championship appearances, just one less than his tally from 2016/17.

Swansea City showing genuine interest in Fulham defender as they seek to strengthen full-back resources

Fulham's Ryan Fredericks is out of contract in the summer and could be available for a fee of around £3million

Swansea City are among the clubs leading the race to sign Fulham's Ryan Fredericks and are ready to firm up their interest in the full-back.

The Swans had made clear their desire to improve their depth on the flanks of their defence prior to the start of the January window, having failed to complete a deadline-day move for Barnsley's Andy Yiadom in August.

They have since been linked with Augsburg's Daniel Okpare, Slavia Prague's Jan Boril and Fredericks , and it is understood there is genuine interest in completing a deal for the £3million-rated Cottager.

Fredericks has impressed under Slavisa Jokanovic - himself recently linked with the Swansea job following Paul Clement's sacking - at Craven Cottage and is out of contract at the end of the season.

Swansea City target Ryan Fredericks in action against Southampton

The 25-year-old Tottenham product has featured predominantly at right-back and has caught the eye with his pace, but can also play on the left side of defence.

Swansea have been operating with just one specialist left-back since the start of the season in the form of Martin Olsson, while Kyle Naughton has only had veteran Angel Rangel for competition in the right-back slot.

Fredericks came through the ranks with Spurs, and made his first-team bow against Hearts in the Europa League in 2011, the same night as current Swan Tom Carroll made his Tottenham debut.

He went on to have loan spells with Brentford, Millwall and Middlesbrough before making the permanent move to Bristol City in the summer of 2015.

However, his stint at Ashton Gate proved shortlived as he left after just 26 days and five appearances citing personal reasons.

He returned to London with Fulham and was a regular last season as they got to the Championship play-offs before losing to Reading over two legs and missing out on the Wembley final.

He has made 26 appearances so far this term, the most recent coming in the FA Cup third-round defeat to Southampton, and Swansea face competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature although Fulham are keen to try and keep hold of Fredericks.

Swansea will also look to strengthen their attacking resources before the end of the window.

They have shown interest in West Ham duo Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew, and have been linked with a £7million move for Celtic's Leigh Griffiths.

Should Leeds make late attempt to hijack Fulham deal for Southampton's Matt Targett?

Fulham are reportedly set to sign Matt Targett from Southampton on loan deal. Should Leeds get into the act quickly and hijack the move?

According to a recent report from The Sun, Championship club Fulham are interested in signing Southampton left-back Matt Targett in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old left-back has made only two Premier League appearances for the Saints, managing 167 minutes of action.

Southampton have Ryan Bertrand as their first choice left-back, and Sam McQueen as a cover for him. With him struggling for regular games, Southampton are looking to send him on loan to gain regular experience.

The report claims that Targett is on the verge of agreeing a deal to play for Fulham until the end of the season.

In the transfer window anything can happen and before Fulham get their target, should Leeds move quickly and attempt to hijack the deal?

The left-back is one area where Leeds could be looking to invest in the January transfer window. Gaetano Berardi is their first choice, but he has missed games due to injury, and the club have struggled to find a solution during his absence.

Loanee Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have been very disappointing and he could return to his parent club. Therefore, signing a left-back is a priority.

Given that Targett is available on loan, Leeds should make a move quickly to lure him to move to Elland Road.

Analysis

Villa U23s fell to defeat in their first match of 2018 after squandering a one-goal lead to lose 3-1 to Fulham at Villa Park.

Aaron Tshibola netted midway through the first half on his first game back with the U23s since his loan at Milton Keynes Dons.

But in the blink of an eye, a comfortable lead became a two-goal deficit, as Fulham made a lighting start to the second half.

In the space of five minutes after the restart, Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson, Mikolaj Kwietniewski and an Easah Suliman own goal put the Cottagers 3-1 up, leaving our Young Lions stunned.

The claret and blues never fully recovered from the five-minute onslaught by the visitors, and therefore missed the opportunity to top PL2 after Blackburn and Middlesbrough had games postponed.

Our U23s now have a busy schedule ahead, with Sheffield United, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion all to play in respective competitions over the next fortnight.

U18s face Fulham in FA Youth Cup

Swansea City Under-18s will face Fulham in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup this month.

The game will be played at Landore on Wednesday, January 17 at 7pm.

Goals from Oli Cooper and Shaquille Wynter-Coles helped the young Swans defeat Chesterfield 2-0 at the third round stage in December.

Meanwhile, Fulham beat Huddersfield on penalties last month following a 1-1 draw at the John Smith's Stadium with goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond scoring the winning spot kick.

Swansea's Under-18s took a 2-1 victory against Fulham in Premier League South before Christmas with Kees de Boer and Craig Davies on target.
