Middlesborough 0 - 1 Aston Villa

Mile Jedinak's goal was his first in an away match since November 2014

Mile Jedinak's header gave Aston Villa a one-goal lead going into the home leg of their Championship play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough.

Jedinak headed home Jack Grealish's corner for the only goal, while Villa's Robert Snodgrass struck the upright.

Boro's best chance was a Britt Assombalonga header saved by Sam Johnstone in the first half.

However, chances were at a premium and that left Villa with a precious lead to take into Tuesday's second leg.

Villa boss Steve Bruce restored vital components of his side, such as skipper John Terry and dynamic playmaker Grealish, which gave the visitors composure and craft in equal measure.

Boro had enjoyed a hot streak in their run to the play-offs but Villa did well to quieten the threat of ex-Villa man Adama Traore and as such they largely lacked the cutting edge to break their opponents down.

Patrick Bamford's introduction late on gave the hosts a sharper focus up front, but even he was unable to supply the firepower to cancel out the Villa lead.

There was a raucous atmosphere in the rapidly-cooling temperatures at the Riverside, but Villa's bright start and early goal punctured the optimism.

It was Villa who controlled the game, much to the visible frustration of Boro boss Tony Pulis, and Snodgrass went close to doubling Villa's lead after concerted pressure, curling the ball toward the far corner but Darren Randolph tipped it onto the post.

Boro came out of their shells as the second half progressed but, even when they got in behind the defence, Johnstone remained largely untroubled.

Pulis' side launched their expected rally as time ticked by, buoyed by Bamford's entrance, but Villa defended resolutely to protect their winning position.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis:

"We're disappointed - we did enough not to lose, their set play was a disappointment and now Villa are in the ascendancy in the tie.

"We've got to go to Villa Park and a full house. But it's still all to play for.

"I don't think anybody could say we deserved to lose the game.

"Villa most probably have the strongest squad in the Championship, so it's going to be tough. But let's go there and give it everything we have got."

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce:

"We're pleased. The cliches will come out and the Championship is riddled with strange things but it's a little advantage and we're pleased with the way we played in particular.

"I brought experienced players in the door to handle what Villa throws at them, they all handle playing under pressure on a big night.

"Jack [Grealish] is starting to mature, he's looking up to people like John Terry and Glenn Whelan who do it properly."

The job is far from done yet, boss Rowett warns Derby

Jerome's fifth goal in four games settled the first leg of the tie.

Derby boss Gary Rowett warned the Rams against any early party after they grabbed the lead in their promotion play-off against faltering Fulham.

Cameron Jerome's header secured a 1-0 victory in the first Sky Bet Championship play-off tie ahead of Monday's second leg at Craven Cottage.

The striker, who has five goals in four games, continued his play-off pedigree after he helped fire Norwich to promotion three years ago by scoring in the semi-final and final.

But Rowett, who saw his side book their top-six spot on the final day of the season, urged the Rams to stay focused following their win at Pride Park on Friday.

He said: "We're not getting carried away at all. I didn't even let them have the music on afterwards because we need to be focused and recover.

"It's a slim lead going into the second leg, but as we all know that can be cancelled out in a second.

"We defended really well, but Fulham fatigue you mentally because they have so much of the ball.

"But with the lack of possession we had, with some of our counter-attacks I was disappointed that we didn't go forward and get a second at the end.

"We got it spot on, but it means nothing, we need to get it really spot on on Monday."

It was the first time Fulham had failed to score since January as they were held at bay by the Rams' excellent defensive display, with Curtis Davies outstanding.

Rowett added: "It's not always about handling the pressure, it's having the energy and maintaining the energy. To play with that discipline and to tactically get it right, I thought we did it really well."

Having gone 23 games unbeaten and finished third, Fulham have now lost their last two games, after a final-day defeat at Birmingham, and they lacked the imagination to break Derby down.

Kevin McDonald struck the bar in the second half, but Ryan Sessegnon struggled to make an impact, with Aleksandar Mitrovic also nullified.

They must improve at Craven Cottage on Monday to avoid another play-off defeat after last season's semi-final loss to Reading.

The Cottagers also missed out on automatic promotion this season on the final day, but boss Slavisa Jokanovic remained positive.

He said: "It's not a bad result, it's not the result we deserve, but it's part of football.

"We dominated and they scored after one cross and Jerome scored a fantastic goal.

"We cannot be frustrated, we must be in some way confident having showed the quality and a great mentality.

"What we want to do is change the story and win the game on Monday."

Slavisa Jokanovic upbeat despite loss as Fulham 'dominated' Derby in Championship play-off first leg

Slavisa Jokanovic remained positive despite Fulham losing their Championship play-off first leg 1-0 to Derby on Friday night.

Having gone 23 games unbeaten and finished third, Fulham have now lost their last two games, after a final-day defeat at Birmingham, and they lacked the imagination to break Derby down.

Derby County boss warns against complacency

Derby County manager Gary Rowett has warned his side not to celebrate prematurely, after their 1-0 victory at the iPro Stadium gave them a first leg advantage in their Sky Bet Championship Play-Off semi final with Fulham.

Cameron Jerome's header was enough to give them a victory, and they now head to Craven Cottage knowing that they will be in the final as long as they avoid defeat.

Despite last night's victory, Rowett is not getting carried away, and has warned his players that the job is far from done.

As quoted by BT Sport, he said: "We're not getting carried away at all. I didn't even let them have the music on afterwards because we need to be focused and recover. It's a slim lead going into the second leg, but as we all know that can be cancelled out in a second."

"We defended really well, but Fulham fatigue you mentally because they have so much of the ball, but with the lack of possession we had, with some of our counter-attacks I was disappointed that we didn't go forward and get a second at the end. We got it spot on, but it means nothing. We need to get it really spot on on Monday."

Derby County only booked their place in the Play-Offs on the final day of the season, with a 4-1 victory over Barnsley securing sixth place. Fulham on the other hand will be disappointed to be in the Play-Offs, after a 3-1 defeat at Birmingham City on the final day cost them automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

Fulham keen on signing AJ Auxerre star on free transfer

Fulham are showing an interest in signing AJ Auxerre midfielder Ousoumane Camara, according to France Football.

The 19-year-old is being tipped for a big future in the game but Auxerre could be set to lose him on a free transfer with his contract expiring next month. Championship side Fulham are keen to bring him to Craven Cottage in the summer.

Camara has never played for Auxerre's first-team yet but is the captain of their reserve team. Fulham will have to face competition from Italian Serie A side Genoa for his signature next month.

Fulham have produced some top players in recent years and have really stepped up their youth policy. Players like Ryan Sessegnon have burst onto the scene for their first-team. They also have some promising youngsters such as Matt O'Riley, who could break into their team in the couple of seasons.

They will be hoping that they can land Ousoumane Camara on a free transfer and that he can be a big player for them in the future.

Despite it being up in the air which division Fulham will be playing in next season, this probably won't affect any deal for Camara as he will be an addition to their Under-23's squad initially and not the first-team. The Cottagers are in the Championship Play-Offs but will go into their second-leg on Monday 1-0 down to Derby County.

Slavisa Jokanovic says Fulham dominated Derby, despite first-leg play-off defeat

Slavisa Jokanovic insists his Fulham side dominated Derby, despite losing the first leg of their Sky Bet Championship Play-Off on Friday.

Cameron Jerome's header handed the home side a 1-0 victory ahead of the return match at Craven Cottage on Monday evening as Fulham failed to score in a Championship game for the first time since mid-December.

However, manager Jokanovic believes his players performed well and need a bit more luck in front of goal to overturn the deficit in the second leg.

He told Sky Sports: "My team showed the quality, showed the mentality and completely dominated the game. I believe it is not enough and we definitely deserved a different result, but everything is still open and we are going to be ready for Monday night.

"We made enough to score a goal, but we weren't clinical enough today and we need to be a little bit more lucky - at the end it is part of football.

"Jerome scored a fantastic goal, they were clinical, and we didn't do enough.

"The team followed the plan, we tried to damage them, but we damaged them without being clinical enough. We moved the ball, kept the ball on the field, we created enough chances to score a goal.

"We cannot feel any frustration, we did our job well, and we trust we can play a similar level and be a bit more lucky and clinical and fight to get to Wembley."

Fulham have now lost two matches in a row after going unbeaten in the previous 23, but Jokanovic remains convinced his side will make it to the play-off final on May 26.

"We don't need to change our mentality, our mentality is fantastic for the past year," he added.

"We put everything on the field, we created many things, but definitely we deserved to score a goal. It is not a question of mentality, my team is strong, my team is confident. We showed quality and self-belief.

"I am positive, I am optimistic, I trust we are going to play in Wembley."

3 things West Ham United fans need to know about Tom Cairney

Tom Cairney captained a very strong Fulham side within two points of automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, falling just short on the final day and dropping into the play-off places.

The 27-year-old central midfielder can play up the pitch as an attacking threat or deep lying as defensive cover for the back line.

Cairney signed for Fulham from Blackburn Rovers back in 2015, and has gone on to make over a century of appearances for the Cottagers.

In a side alongside players like Ryan Sessegnon, it is credit to the Scottish international that he can stand out, and gain attention from clubs in the Premier League.

Here is three things that West Ham United fans – with their club linked – need to know about Fulham's Tom Cairney.

International call-ups could be on the way

Tom Cairney was born in Nottingham to a Scottish father, making him eligible for the Scots at international level.

The 27-year-old made his debut for Scotland in March 2017 in a 1-1 draw against Canada in an international friendly match, and has gone on to play just once more after his first game.

Prior to his call up to the senior side, the midfielder had made appearances for both the Scotland Under-19 and Under-21 sides, making a combined eight appearances.

He's got plenty of drive

The midfielder had been signed with Leeds United since the age of seven, but was released from the club's youth system at the age of 16, after being told he was too small to play for them.

Cairney now stands at six foot tall and is a dominant box to box midfielder player, who shows his dominance on the field every game.

After his release from Elland Road, Cairney joined Hull City's youth set up, where he went on to make 70 appearances for the first team.

He'd be one of their best

Tom Cairney has played for three teams in his career thus far, Hull City, Blackburn Rovers and Fulham, and has won a player of the year award at each and every one of his clubs.

He was crown young Player of the Year award in the 2008/09 season whilst at Hull City. Blackburn Rovers awarded him the Player of the Year Award for his work in the 2013/14 season. While he was announced as Fulham's 2016/17 Player of the Season.

Gary Rowett explains the conundrum teams face when they play Fulham

Derby County were resolute to see out a 1-0 play-off semi-final first leg win over the Cottagers

Derby County manager Gary Rowett has explained the conundrum teams face when playing Fulham.

Rowett's Rams beat Fulham 1-0 in their Championship play-off semi-final first leg at Pride Park Stadium last night.

The second leg is at Craven Cottage on Monday with a place in the final at Wembley at stake.

Fulham bossed possession in the first leg.

They had 73% of the ball and made three times as many passes as Derby despite being the away side.

But Rowett's tactics proved spot on and the Rams hold a slender lead.

"Over the course of the season Fulham have made the most passes, they keep possession best out of all of the teams," said Rowett.

"They give you a real conundrum.

"As much as you want to be so brave and press them high up the pitch, they pass the ball and wait for you to open up your shape and then they try to capitalise because they have got very good attacking players.

"It took us probably 15 minutes to show as much belief as I would like on the ball.

"We showed discipline to limit Fulham to few chances. They had a couple of shots from distance, one of which hit the bar, and they are always dangerous the way they move the ball."

Derby County tickets sold out for crunch play-off tie at Fulham

The Rams go into Monday's match with a 1-0 lead

Derby County have sold out their allocation of tickets for Monday's crunch play-off tie against Fulham.

If the Rams avoid defeat at Craven Cottage on Monday night they will then book a place at Wembley and be one win away from reaching the Premier League.

Derby County find themselves with a slender advantage after winning the first leg 1-0 on Friday night at Pride Park Stadium thanks to a bullet header from Cameron Jerome midway through the first half.

And Derby go into the big game with 2,000 supporters cheering them on in London after tickets were sold out pretty swiftly.

Around 500 tickets were left on sale for season ticket holders only from 9am today. Previously tickets were on sale only for the club's season ticket holders members who had been to 12 or more away games.

Derby County's ticket office Twitter page confirmed later in the morning that all tickets had been sold out.

The match will also be shown live on Sky Sports as Derby hope to successfully defend their slender advantage in the capital.

Leeds United and Fulham among clubs linked with Sheffield Wednesday attacker

Leeds United and Fulham are just two of the clubs being linked with a move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Fernando Forestieri.

Bookmakers BetVictor have implied that both the Cottagers and the Yorkshire club are interested in the Argentinian born Italian, giving them odds of 4/1 and 8/1 respectively.

Forestieri has been at current club Sheffield Wednesday since August 2015, when he left Watford following their promotion to the Premier League.

The Owls signed him on what was supposed to be an undisclosed fee, but has been reported to be somewhere in the region of £3 million.

The striker enjoyed a successful start to his Sheffield Wednesday career, scoring 15 goals in his debut season, helping the Owls to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final, but they were beaten 1-0 by Hull City.

The following season was also a successful one for the former Italian youth international. He scored 12 goals, again taking Sheffield Wednesday to the Play-Offs, but this time they were beaten in the Semi Finals by eventual winners Huddersfield Town.

Fernando Forestieri struggled a lot with injury this season. He picked up an injury back in August, and did not return to first team action until March, scoring a goal in his first game back against Preston North End.

Once back in the team, Forestieri started getting back among the goals. He scored a brace against Reading, and picked up a goal and an assist in his side's final game of the Sky Bet Championship season against Norwich City.

Other clubs who are said to be interested are Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough.

Manchester United and Tottenham transfer target Ryan Sessegnon valued at £100million by Fulham

Ryan Sessegnon has emerged as a target for a number of Premier League clubs (Picture: Getty)

Fulham will demand an incredible £100million fee if they sell Ryan Sessegnon this summer, according to The Sun.

Sessegnon only made his first-team debut at Craven Cottage last season but is already being linked with a high-profile move to the Premier League.

Manchester United and Tottenham have been strongly linked, with both clubs looking to strengthen their left-sided options in the summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho is believed to be an admirer of Sessegnon, who was recently named the Championship Player of the Year, viewing him as a potential replacement for Luke Shaw.

England international Shaw joined the Red Devils for £30million in 2014 but he has failed to win the trust and support of Mourinho.

Spurs are also keeping tabs on Sessegnon's situation but The Sun say Fulham will look to attract a record £100m to sell the 17-year-old this summer.

Sessegnon has been tipped as a future England star (Picture: Getty)

Fulham could still secure promotion to the Premier League – they lost the first leg of their play-off semi-final to Derby on Friday.

It is claimed that while Fulham's valuation would certainly end Tottenham's interest in Sessegnon, Mourinho could be tempted as he bids to solve a problem area in his squad.

This week, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic insisted Sessegnon's future at the club was not dependent on whether his team get promoted to the top-flight.

'I don't believe it,' he said. 'I'm asked many times this question and right now I'm focused on our present – this is more important.

Fulham Looking To Bring In 23 Y/O Sunderland Midfielder: Good Fit For Jokanovic's Squad?

George Honeyman is reportedly on the lists of a number of Championship clubs. Fulham are leading the race, followed closely by Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a profitable season, making him one of the most bankable players in the Sunderland squad. Honeyman has stood out from the rest of this teammates in their lost battle for Championship survival.

The Black Cats are set to play League One football next campaign, which would understandably drive out some of the big names. However, the club remains hesitant on selling any of their assets before Stewart Donald's takeover has been confirmed. All debts have been cleared by the current management and are awaiting the confirmation from the EFL.

Honeyman is a graduate of the Sunderland academy, making his debut on 15 February 2015 in the FA Cup fifth round against Bradford. He appeared in 47 games this campaign and slotted the ball in 7 times. He also furthered 2 assists which evidently makes it his best season for the Black Cats senior team.

The attacking midfielder seems to have finally settled into his role in the first team and teams like Fulham and the rest will definitely profit heavily from the transfer. The player is versatile in attack and has a keen eye for the right pass. His sharp turns with the ball help him drift away from players to create space.

Standing at 5 feet 8 inches, he is quite agile and has a deft touch on the ball. Honeyman is capable of driving the team's offence and is slowly coming into his own. Fulham have just lost the first game of the playoffs against Derby County. There is no guarantee to what the final race for promotion will deliver but the Cottagers remain adamant on restrengthening in the coming summer.

Their starting number 10, Tom Cairney is on the shortlist of multiple Premier League outfits. He could be on his way out of Craven Cottage even if the Lillywhites make it into the top-flight.

Whether Honeyman will be as impactful as the 26-year-old can be debated upon, but he can certainly fill in as a rotational option. The Englishman will have better players around him who will be able to make better use of his services.

The player should definitely make the switch if circumstances allow him to as Fulham would be the right next step in his career.

The Craven Cottage outfit enjoyed 74 per cent possession on Friday night
Kevin McDonald insists: 'We battered them and we paid for our mistakes'

Kevin McDonald claimed Fulham 'battered' Derby during their first leg play-off defeat but says they will reach Wembley.

Cameron Jerome's bullet header means Derby head to Craven Cottage on Monday with a one-goal lead, despite the visitors' 74 per cent possession.

'We battered them and we paid for our mistakes,' said midfielder McDonald, who hit the crossbar after half-time.

Kevin McDonald is confident that Fulham will beat Derby and progress to Wembley

'We were sloppy in the final third of the pitch and they played on that.

'Derby fans were a bag of nerves at first until they got a goal and then they were in good voice. We need exactly the same from Fulham fans.

'The Cottage will be bouncing and we'll put on a good performance. We've got to throw everything at it, it's as simple as that.'

Fulham 'slap £100million price tag' on Manchester United target Ryan Sessegnon

PLUS: Manchester United are lining up a sensational swoop for Paris Saint-Germain megastar Neymar

Fulham have slapped a £100million price tag on Manchester United target Ryan Sessegnon.

That is according to The Sun, who say the Cottagers are determined not to lose the 17-year-old without a fight.

The winger, who has also been linked with Tottenham, was recently named Championship Player of the Year and is the first player from outside the Premier League to be nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Fulham are a goal down heading into the second leg of their playoff semi-final against Derby as they bid to return to the top flight.

Sessegnon would become the most expensive Englishman of all time should the reported £100million asking price be met.

£100m is nonsense. I think  he will plateau around 22-23 like Welbeck etc.

£35m is probably a fair price in current market.
