Number of clubs sponsored by betting firms is 'disturbing', say campaigners
• Gambling firms sponsor 17 of 24 Championship sides
• GambleAware fears 'tipping point' among younger supporters

Experts on problem gambling have described the growing number of football clubs with betting firms and online casinos on their shirts as "disturbing" and "worrying" and said a national debate on the potential harm is overdue.

Nearly 60% of the clubs in England's top two divisions will have gambling companies on their shirts this season – nine of 20 in the Premier League and a staggering 17 of 24 teams in the Championship.

Sky Bet sponsor all three of the EFL's divisions but it is the situation in the Championship, where the number of gambling sponsors most concerns charities which deal with the negative consequences of the UK's £14bn gambling industry.

"This is worrying," Gambling Watch UK's Professor Jim Orford told PA Sport. "There is evidence that gambling is becoming ever more normalised, particularly among young people, so that increasingly betting is seen as part and parcel of following and supporting one's favourite sport or team."

According to the Gambling Commission's most recent statistics, there are 430,000 adult problem gamblers in the UK, with a further two million at risk of developing a problem.

In another alarming statistic, 370,000 children aged 11 to 16 gamble each week and 25,000 of those are classed as problem gamblers.

Orford said the gambling industry's link with football is particularly problematic as it so pervasive. He also said there was "increasing worry" about the grey area between social media gambling, which is popular with youngsters and often free, and real gambling.

"Many people think gambling is now out of control in Britain which has the most liberal online gambling regulations of any European country," Orford added.

After Joey Barton was suspended for betting whilst still playing was it not comments by he that saw the FA drop some sponsorship by a betting company? Personally I detest the gambling companies.

I've never been a gambler, never understood the desire to gamble but accept its a bit of fun if kept to the occasional flutter.

But the proliferation of betting companies and the amount of money spent on promoting gambling suggests to me that there's a serious problem that's being ignored?

Personally I would ban it from advertising like cigarettes for a start.

I totally agree. Advertising just encourages the practice which, as I've seen in otherwise intelligent people, can be destructively addictive. And, although I like a drink, I wouldn't allow booze advertising either.

Funny, apart from once I've never bet (I don't even like the moral pressure to buy raffle tickets) but I do remember my mum getting excited about some horse race when I was about 6 - and giving her 6d to put on...Nicholas Silver. But as I recall, it came nowhere. Maybe it was a different occasion.

My understanding is that there are moves afoot to seriously curtail gambling companies advertising on TV - aka SKY and BT Sport most notably.  Apart from massively affecting revenue streams to the TV companies (BT already cutting back, SKY never tell you anything) it means the betting companies will look to softer alternatives such as club sponsorship, competition sponsorship etc, etc.

Personally I think all online gambling should be stopped......far too easy to click a couple of times and be in real financial trouble.

It used to be alcohol companies now its gambling companies. Cigarette companies used to be the biggest sporting event sponsors. Soft drinks with too much sugar were very popular as sponsors. I am afraid those companies with money are those companies that pray on our weakness to actually enjoy ourselves. We can't keep on legislating for the weakness of individuals. The biggest killer in the country is the NHS. If only they could sponsor something.

Salad and healthy living drinks companies just haven't got a chance.
The above IS NOT A LEGAL DOCUMENT. It is an opinion.

We may yet hear the horse talk.

Been a while so I thought I had better check and it was 1961 when it won so I would have been nearly 5.Bit early to start betting..

Too true unfortunately.  I've met many gamblers who've told me they make a good few £ from gambling but I've never met one who tells me they lose £.  The gambling companies profits suggest someone's telling porkies?

Statto

I'd wager loads, possibly most, of this advertising is aimed at  far Eastern audiences (look how many have 8 in their name) and reflects the increased polularity of  UK football over there rather than an increase in the popularity of gambling in the UK.

Also gambling is a broad market with more small challenger brands emerging all the time, so advertising, which is necessary to launch a new brand, is particularly relevant to that industry. Back when it was just William Hill, Ladbrokes et al it probably wasn't so important.

I've no strong views on the morality of gambling but it seems a bit hypocritical that most still have no problem with beer being sold in the ground and would love London Pride as a shirt sponsor. Surely alcohol is at least as big a "problem" as gambling.

Personally I've no problem with them banning it, not least because Dafabet is a bloody stupid sounding word and looks ugly on our shirts IMO. But presumably that sort of thing needs to come from Parliament.

the biggest issue I have with the companies is if someone starts doing well they close their accounts
