Surely in his own interest and getting game time he has to move on today,I would have thought his agent whoever  he is would have found him a club by now(if he wanted one).

It seems to me the club triggered the extra year option on his contract with a view to getting a fee for him.
He's probably on a lowish wage and we are prepared to wait rather than allow him to walk.
