According to the paper the man on the right opposite the sergeant went on to win the Victoria Cross. Perhaps those who object to the Poppy should be made to watch and see the hardships these people went through but did so with such stoicism.

I think the material inside those uniforms puts those wet nursed, pampered numskulls at Cambridge to shame. Where would we be without those unbelievably brave men and women who we stand silent for just one minute on the 11th November every year?

Was it easy back then to get a deferment for "bone spurs" or a "hyperactive pyloric valve"?  What is it with the chicken hawks of today who got out of serving when their country called...  The material inside those uniforms indeed.
