Barnsley v Sunderland: Cauley Woodrow wants to feel promotion at first hand

THE SIGHT of his former club Fulham getting promoted at Wembley last May in the self-styled 'richest game in football' was a bittersweet one for Cauley Woodrow.

While elated for his team-mates following their 1-0 success in the Championship play-off final against Aston Villa the Barnsley striker was also entitled to think 'if only'.

Sent out on loan to the Cottagers' second-tier rivals Bristol City in a frustrating 2017-18 season cut short by injury, Woodrow is now happy to be taking centre stage in the promotion stakes at Oakwell.

Former Prime Minister and iconic Yorkshireman Harold Wilson's famous maxim that a week is a long time in politics will ring true in the sporting realm for second-placed Reds over the coming days.

Should they follow up Saturday's victory over Accrington with another three points in this evening's 'six-pointer' with the side just below them in the table in Sunderland – and then provide gloss at the expense of Doncaster Rovers with a derby win on Friday – Barnsley would be in a position of immense strength heading into the run-in.

Plenty of hard work is in store before then, but motivation is not difficult to come by in the likes of Woodrow or his Reds team-mates who suffered the bitter pill of relegation last term.

Fourteen-goal Woodrow, who has assumed extra goalscoring responsibility with strike partner Kieffer Moore out of action until next season, said: "It (promotion) would be massive for me.

"A lot of players can go throughout their careers without winning anything or getting promoted. We are in a strong position now and getting promoted with Barnsley is something I would love to do in my first season here.

"It would be a massive achievement for me and the club and everyone. I would be delighted.

"I was out on loan last season and when they (Fulham) got promoted I was not there. But I was pleased for the lads who got promoted and played with a lot of them over the years and saw what it meant to them.

"I would love to get that feeling which they got.

"It is a big week for us. It (Sunderland) is a massive game, second versus third. Saturday was important that we have got a win and Friday is another massive game at Doncaster on the TV.

Stefan Johansen must surely be delighted at emerging West Brom news

Following the sacking of Darren Moore at West Bromwich Albion, the club are believed to have declared an interest in appointing Slavisa Jokanovic as their new manager.

The Slovenian boss has been without a managerial role since his departure from Fulham earlier on in the season, and is believed to have had talks with the West Midlands side ahead of a potential appointment.

The vast majority of West Brom fans are thrilled with this latest development – Jokanovic has experience of gaining promotion to the Premier League twice in his managerial career, and knows what it takes to get up into the top flight via the play-offs, which looks to be the most likely route for West Brom this term.

His style of play is one that fans and players alike would definitely warm to, and one player who is bound to be thrilled at this latest news is Stefan Johansen.

The playmaker is no stranger to Jokanovic having played an influential role in his side's promotion to the top-flight last term, but has since failed to replicate the form he showed at Craven Cottage last term at the Hawthorns thus far.

The midfielder has endured a frustrating spell at the Hawthorns so far, scoring just one goal in four league starts for the club, but the appointment of Jokanovic could give him a new lease of life.

In a season where the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney grabbed the headlines for Fulham, Johansen was undeniably their unsung hero, scoring eight goals and producing a hatful of assists for a Fulham team that played magnificent football.

Having the comfort of knowing that Jokanovic gets the best out of him would be beneficial for Johansen at West Brom...

Report: Tottenham Hotspur target Aleksandar Mitrovic now valued at £50m

Fulham are almost certain to face the drop this season, and should that happen, they will have to offload some of their big name players.

The Cottagers are expected to lose their star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic who has scored 10 goals in the Premier League this season. He has been almost unplayable when he is on form, but he is likely to draw attention from heavyweight clubs elsewhere, if Fulham are relegated.

During the January transfer window, Tottenham saw a £27 million bid for the Serbia international rejected, with Fulham refusing to part ways with their key midway through the season.

TEAMtalk have reported that Mitrovic is now valued at a staggering £50 million, and Spurs will have to break their bank to sign the former Newcastle United striker.

Furthermore, the report claims that Mitrovic has been offered wages of £12 million a year from clubs in the Chinese Super League.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino could be looking to sign a new striker in the summer, and Mitrovic could have been a superb option for him. However, it is highly unlikely that the north London club would pay such a high transfer fee for him.

Gonzalez, Ream back with US national team under Berhalter

NEW YORK

Omar Gonzalez and Tim Ream, a pair of 30-plus defenders, are on U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter's first roster with his full player pool. Teen forwards Tim Weah and Josh Sargent are not.

"I value veteran leadership," Berhalter said Tuesday after announcing his 24-man group. "I value the culture of what it means to play for the men's national team and I think it's important to have players that have been through it."

Berhalter's picks for exhibitions against Ecuador on March 21 at Orlando, Florida, and Chile five days later at Houston offered insight into his evaluation of a player pool that turned over after the November loss at Trinidad in Tobago, ending a streak of seven straight World Cup appearances.

Interim coach Dave Sarachan gave debuts to 23 players in 12 matches and Berhalter to seven more during his first two games this year, when he used a roster entirely from Major League Soccer.

Three top-class forwards who Fulham should target as Mitrovic replacement including Burnley star

Fulham Opinion: Three Mitrovic replacements the Cottagers can target

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has been one of the only bright lights in their horrific return to the Premier League, with the Serbian having a ball in the Premier League.

He's scored 10 goals in 30 appearances in the Premier League alone, which is 35% of the goals the Cottagers have scored this season. However, the 24-year-old was linked with a move to China during the winter window (Sun) and has been linked with a move once again.

ESPN (h/t Teamtalk) has linked the Fulham star with a move to China. It further adds that Mitrovic has been valued at around £50million.

That being said, with Fulham the favourites to get relegated, the club needs to start preparing for a future without their best stars.

With Mitrovic linked with a move away, here are three players the Cottagers must target:

3) Max Kruse

Out of contract in the summer, the 30-year-old is a lot older than Aleksandar Mitrovic, but at the same time, he would be the perfect replacement. While Kruse doesn't score as many goals as the Serbian, what he does do well is contribute to the build-up play.

This season alone, the German has 11 assists to add to his 7 goals, which is far more than what Mitrovic has produced. If Fulham do get relegated, they'll need a classy center-forward to help them return to the Premier League and Max Kruse as a free agent would be a good move.

It will allow the Cottagers to use their money elsewhere to strengthen key positions and the German's consistent record in front of goal is just an added bonus.

2) Che Adams

A revelation this season, Adams has had a superb breakout season in the Championship, scoring 21 goals in 36 appearances for Birmingham City. His form has been crucial to any hopes the club has of making a playoff spot, and it's exactly what Fulham need.

The Cottagers have missed a consistent goalscorer this season and for all his abilities, Mitrovic has struggled in this aspect. That being said, it is the first time that Adams has hit double figures in his career but he is only 22 years old and will improve further with time.

However, while Birmingham City do have a transfer embargo, a high enough price of somewhere around £15million (Sky Sports) or so, will convince them to sell.

1 Matej Vydra

His struggles in the Premier League this season after his big money to Burnley has been evident. This combined with a few other issues have led to Burnley's downfall, and this is why the club are fighting a relegation scrap at the moment.

However, that being said, Vydra still remains a good striker and one that has flourished in the lower leagues. His final season with Derby County saw the 26-year-old finish with 21 goals and 4 assists, his career best since his first season with Watford.

The Czech international finished that season with 20 goals and 8 assists, flourishing as their main forward. However, for Fulham, what does make him an exciting buy is that Vydra uses his pace and agility to terrorise defenders.

That's something that the Cottagers have missed this season. Vydra would be a brilliant buy.

Wolves should leave no stone unturned in signing this 27-year-old midfield enforcer to boost squad depth

Wolves Opinion: Why Jean Michael Seri will be a good fit for Nuno's Wolves?

Fulham's season hasn't gone according to the scripts and with just eight games left in the Premier League campaign, relegation back to the Championship is looking very much likely.

A 3-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday means the Cottagers are now 13 points off safety. Relegation to the Championship will certainly see a lot of players leave Craven Cottage in the summer. One such player could be Jean Michael Seri, who was signed from OGC Nice last summer on a four-year contract, with an option for further year.

Seri, 27, represented a big coup for the newly-promoted Fulham then but less than a season in, the Ivorian has failed to live up to the massive expectations of the fans. There have been glimpses of his quality; in fact, he had started the season well and scored a screamer against Burnley as well.

However, the 27-year-old was bullied easily off the ball and lost possession at times in crucial junctures of the game, while his teammates' constant poor showing didn't do any favours to him either. In spite of everything, Wolves should make a summer swoop for Seri after Fulham's relegation.

Wolves have exactly been polar opposite to what Fulham have been in the Premier League. Nuno Espirito Santo's men have surpassed their expectations upon their return to the top-flight and are currently fighting for a place in the Europa League.

The club showed a lot of ambition by backing Nuno in the summer transfer window. But if Wolves are to challenge the 'Big Six' and do well in Europe next season, they'll need to invest again on the squad.

One of the areas the Midlands outfit should strengthen is the midfield, with Joao Moutinho set to turn 33 in September and Ruben Neves a summer transfer target for Manchester United.

Jean Michael Seri may have not set the Premier League on fire in his debut season but there is no denying his qualities that make him an ideal fit for Nuno's Wolves.

He is a very good passer of the ball and has an incredible vision to create chances for his attackers. The 27-year-old is versatile enough to fit into a couple of other positions in both attacking and defensive aspects.

Seri reads the game well and would add a lot of thrust and energy to the Wolves midfield. With one long pass or through ball, the Ivorian can open up the opposition's defence and create a chance for his teammates to score.

Conclusion

The 27-year-old is a solid midfielder and his calmness, composure, energy and work-rate will be invaluable assets to Wolves. Nuno needs to add Seri to his ranks if Wolves are to challenge for a place in the top six next season.

That said, the Midlands outfit should do everything in their powers to lure Seri away from Fulham in the summer.

Would rather have had Mitro. Che is a through the middle player, not a winger, wasted money, so no miss at all
