We Went up One Season Too Early, Thats all
« on: March 14, 2019, 01:03:23 PM »
We needed one more season in the Championship, with Slav in charge, Mitro being top scorer in the league, Sess flying at a good level for him, no crazy spending on average players, and most importantly not having a team full of loanees.

We would have walked the championship this year, very possibly, and been ready for the Prem.

Had we not come up, I suspect Cairney, Sessegnon and Mitrovic (along with Fredericks) and perhaps even Jokanovic would have been at different clubs this season and we'd have struggled to even make the play-offs.

We came up in the nick of time IMO.

Also not sure having lots of loanees harmed us, in itself. That didn't mean we had to make lots of changes last summer - we had more than enough funds to make them all permanent. The decision to swap them for different players was voluntarily taken by Tony Khan.

Whatever season we'd have come up, we'd have been f***** with TK and Mackintosh taking the same approach to transfers they did last summer.

Identical to what I was about to post.

Agree that Targett and Kalas needed to be retained for continuity but it didn’t happen as prices were overinflated. Make of that what you will ... as no doubt offset against financial loss dropping back down.

I still think loanees were an issue. We need to sign the Bryan’s of this world at right back and CB. We also need players with flair in the £10-15m bracket on the wings. Add that to our current team, bring back Joka, and ensure all fans and players know we are planning for 2022 and not 2020. Build the foundations.

I too think we came up at the correct time. We had the manager, we had a framework of a reasonable squad and importantly had a proper goalscorer plus a young pretender.

What unfortunately we did not have, as we have discussed endlessly, was an experienced our intuitively gifted person to organise the enhancement of our squad. Whenever we would have come up we were making repetitive replies that aren't funny!  to finish in the bottom three because without a defence you cannot survive this league.

It is never too early to get promoted, you cannot pick and choose when or where. You grab the chance when it arises, because you may not get another opportunity.
You cannot select the best time, you will know when it comes Round because you will see us up the top of the Division. Grab it when you can, you may never get another opportunity.

Fully agree, whenever a promotion chance comes along it should be taken otherwise the team can disintegrate. Remember how close that magnificent McDonald team came to promotion to the top flight. We had an awful long wait for the next opportunity.

We are all aware that the big mistake last summer was not signing a couple of quality replacement fullbacks and a top quality fit centre back.

TFM, Chambers and Mawson were all young defenders each with 33 premier league games experience and one international call up each that were expected to improve dramatically. By the Watford Game, thr 6th game of the season all three had been written off.

Christie, Odoi, Ream MLM and Bryan were doing well in lower divisions and looked like may handle a step up, plus Ryan Sessegnon could play left back and still maybe his long-term position at a big club.

This.  If we didn't go up last season we would have been down there for 10 years plus.

When Odoi was sent off, we had 26 minutes of parchate payments left, because of that final we have a squad, that have trained together for a year giving premier league teams shooting practice, in preparation for two years in the championship with parachate payments with a team capable of promotion even without additions.

If promoted will have a core of premiership squad players on permanent contracts that just need around four quality signings (including two full backs, a centre back and a right winger) plus a few loans to stay up. No reason with a good manager, this team cannot get promoted. We have a new squad of top individuals, hopefully next year they look something like a team and get results.

As nice an idea it is that you can make such things as promotion (and therefore, by inference, relegation) happen it is simply a fanciful OP.  We may, under SJ, with a better referee got to Wembley and beaten Huddersfield in the season before it actually happened and so I am guessing that if that had have happened relegation by design would have been last season and this time around we would have been Chamionship leaders by a country mile and design.... with a whole lot of household names paying for us.....

You take opportunities for all they are worth in football unless your names are Khan and Mackintosh.

Statto's comment is apposite.  We failed to buy players that would actually work for us.  We failed to back the best manager we have had in a long time.  We are not learning.  We are regressing.
