Fulham 0-2 Manchester City

Only four of Sergio Aguero's 19 Premier League goals this season have come away from home.

Manchester City cruised back to the top of the Premier League as they condemned strugglers Fulham to their eighth consecutive defeat.

Pep Guardiola's side quickly established their superiority in the west London sunshine, with Bernardo Silva's 20-yard drive finding the bottom left corner inside five minutes.

City, who had 10 shots in the first 15 minutes, added their second when Sergio Aguero sublimely lifted the ball over home goalkeeper Sergio Rico from close range.

Some woeful defending from Fulham - who have now conceded 72 goals, the worst record in the top flight - contributed to both goals, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Joe Bryan both guilty of gifting the ball to City near their own goal.

Scott Parker's side also struggled to make an impression at the other end of the pitch and failed to register a shot on target.

City, who are chasing an unprecedented quadruple, move one point above Liverpool, who host Tottenham on Sunday (16:30 BST kick-off).

The Cottagers stay second bottom, 16 points from safety with six league games remaining.

Aguero's key contribution
By the time Aguero was substituted in the 57th minute Manchester City were well on their way to a seventh consecutive Premier League victory.

And the 30-year-old, who is the division's top scorer with 19 goals, played as decisive role as usual in the final third.

He may have only managed 22 touches, but one of his first was seizing on to Fosu-Mensah's mistake to assist Silva's opening goal.

Silva then repaid the favour to provide the Argentina forward the chance to continue his own rich vein of form - and Aguero delivered his 14th goal in his past 14 appearances.

His darting run gave him the time to execute the deftest of finishes as Rico closed in to narrow an already tight angle. It was Aguero's only shot on target but it brought him his fifth goal in eight Premier League starts against Fulham.

It also underlined his prowess against sides that come up from the Championship.

Since his arrival in England from Atletico Madrid in 2011, no player has been involved in more Premier League goals against newly promoted teams than Aguero - who has scored 29 times and provided seven assists.

Fulham toil again
While Fulham ran title challengers Liverpool close in their last outing at Craven Cottage - losing 2-1 after James Milner's late penalty - they barely laid a glove on City.

With injury depriving the Cottagers of 10-goal top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic, they started the contest with a line-up that had seven league goals between them this season.

In contrast, the visitors - who are now 14 games away from the quadruple - were able to boast a combined 22 league goals among their substitutes.

The opening half emphasised the disparity of resource and the ambitions of the two clubs, as the best attack in the division repeatedly cut open the worst defence.

Fulham were fortunate to only be two behind at the interval as City created a succession of chances and Raheem Sterling appeared to have a valid claim for a penalty turned down after Fosu-Mensah's challenge.

And even when City eased up in the second period, the hosts were still unable to muster an effort on target.

Instead, City almost added a third goal when Kyle Walker fired a right-foot shot against the post after Sterling had laid the ball into his path.

Man of the match - Sergio Aguero (Man City)

'The first 15-20 minutes was incredible' - what they said

Manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The first 15-20 minutes was incredible with the way we played.

"After the international break you usually miss a bit with your rhythm, but the effort was there. This game was tricky - 12:30 on Saturday, a sunny day. That is unusual and that is why I am so satisfied.

"We are going to do everything to win. No matter the next competition, we will win the game. Fulham was a tough game for Liverpool and Chelsea so we knew it was going to be tricky.

"We don't think too much about what people say about the quadruple. What Liverpool and Manchester City have done in the Premier League both deserve credit. That's why we are here."

Fulham caretaker manager Scott Parker, speaking to Match of the Day: "Anyone in my position knows the challenge I had. I thought we did all right. But you concede an early goal like that...

"I don't know if we were too tentative [early in the match]. I thought we were brave. You need to be brave against this team. It's the only way you can put a stamp on the game.

"You are where you are in the division. During games, there have been moments that have been pleasing. We know the predicament we are in but we need to finish the season strongly.

"I'm enjoying it immensely. The position I have is tough but I want to give the team an identity again."

City love London - the stats

Fulham have lost their past seven top-flight matches against Manchester City. Only once before have they suffered more consecutive top-flight defeats against one team - eight by Manchester United between 2005 and 2009.
City have lost just one of their past 10 Premier League visits to London, winning eight.
Fulham have conceded at least twice in their past 12 league games, the longest such sequence in the top flight since a run of 14 by Newcastle between May and October 1977.
City are the first side to face no shots on target in two consecutive away Premier League games - against Bournemouth and Fulham - since they also achieved the feat in November 2017.
The Cottagers failed to have an effort on target for the first time in 188 home league games.
Parker is the first Fulham manager to lose his first four games in charge in the Premier League.
Silva scored in three consecutive Manchester City appearances for the first time.
Aguero has been involved in eight goals in his past five league starts against Fulham (five goals, three assists).

What's next?
Fulham travel to Watford in the Premier League on Tuesday (19:45 BST kick-off), while Manchester City host Cardiff City on Wednesday (19:45) in their next league game.

Parker Reaction

Scott Parker was disappointed with defeat but wouldn't want to change the approach he tried to take against Manchester City.

Two early goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero condemned Fulham to defeat but Parker insists that the team was trying to play the right way.

Parker said: "We obviously knew and understood the challenge we faced before kick-off and it proved that way. At times it was very difficult, in the first-half I felt we started a little bit nervy for the first ten minutes.

"We wanted to stamp our way on the game, making sure everyone understood the way we set-up and how we wanted the team to play and that there was risk which we recognised.

"I thought the lads were brave certainly in the first-half, 1-0 down after five minutes you can fold, but overall it was a difficult afternoon.

"We wanted to play through the thirds a little bit and a risk came with that, that was proved with a couple of mistakes, I wouldn't change the way the lads played, or the way we set up.

"If there was one thing it's that the lads showed some bravery out there today because it's quite easy when you're playing a football match against a world class team like Man City to hide and play back to front quickly and not see any of the ball.

"I know ultimately that we lost the game through individual errors, but I was pleased with certain parts."

Parker has had a tough ask in the role with three home fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City but he thinks the team have shown some fight in these big games.

He said: "In terms of me personally it is what it is, I want to talk about the team, I want the team to show what they can do. At times this season we've shown glimpses, and we've shown glimpses in the past three games, albeit three tough games.

"I think it's cliché, it's true there's six games left but it's still mathematically possible [to stay up], but being realistic we need to look ahead at where we lie and it's a tough ask of course.

"The main focus is the remaining games and we push and end the season on a positive, obviously this season has been a difficult campaign."

Parker was quizzed by the press about the absence of Aleksandar Mitrović in the matchday squad and he confirmed that the Serbian international didn't return from international duty fully fit.

"Aleksandar Mitrović has been struggling in the last few weeks with an ongoing issue he has, he featured for Serbia in the week against Portugal, he came back in and didn't really have a chance to get right. The turnaround for Tuesday is going be a day to day basis.

"We'll try and get some treatment into him but really I couldn't make a call on whether or not he will be fit for Tuesday or not, it's a stomach problem," said Parker.

Man City back on top after Fulham hand them easy win

Manchester City climbed back to the top of the Premier League with a stroll of a 2-0 win away at Fulham on Saturday.

Bernardo Silva notched his 11th goal in all competitions this term, before setting up Sergio Aguero for a neat finish at Craven Cottage.

Aguero extended his lead at the top of the Premier League's scoring chart, with his 19th top-flight strike of yet another glittering campaign.

City racked up their 11th win in their last 12 outings in all competitions, leapfrogging rivals Liverpool to top the pile.

Guardiola's masterful City never even moved out of second gear in a relaxed victory which maintains their bid for an unprecedented quadruple.

Fulham now go on to Tuesday night's Vicarage Road encounter with Watford, where defeat could yet confirm their relegation back to the Championship.

Caretaker manager Scott Parker has added shape and impetus to the Cottagers in a poor top-flight campaign, but that is bound to prove too little, too late.

City dominated at a stroll, right from the off, and the day belonged to Silva.

He stroked home a neat opener on just five minutes, pouncing on Timothy Fosu-Mensah's poor misplaced pass.

A meandering encounter quickly ensued, with City so confident in their ability to canter to victory that they allowed Fulham a modicum of possession.

No high-octane pressing was required given Fulham's profligacy with the ball however, and when Aguero doubled the visitors' lead, the game was done and dusted inside half an hour.

The Argentina forward latched onto Silva's smart inside ball, steadying himself before chipping the advancing Sergio Rico.

Guardiola withdrawing Aguero before the hour spoke volumes about how much of a procession the match had become, though Gabriel Jesus' arrival hardly lowered the quality.

The final half-hour passed almost entirely without incident, save for Raheem Sterling's delightfully delayed through-ball so nearly yielding a third City goal.

England forward Sterling waited long enough for his international colleague Kyle Walker to race past him on the overlap, only for the full-back's fierce drive to strike the post.

Five things we learned as Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero led Manchester City in stroll past Fulham

Manchester City were far too good for Manchester City, but it wasn't all good news for Pep Guardiola

1) Silva pushes his case for end-of-season recognition
When it comes to deciding the Premier League's end-of-season awards, Liverpool have a pretty obvious candidate in man-mountain Virgil van Dijk,  but there is not such a clear-cut selection from the other standout team, Manchester City. Sergio Aguero has another bulging bag of goals and Raheem Sterling has been sensational, yet perhaps the outside bet to be shortlisted is the popular Portuguese, Bernardo Silva.

At the start of the season Pep Guardiola revealed his opening team selection would be "Bernardo Silva and 10 others", such was his impressive pre-season campaign, and that form has carried right through to this point. So often he has been creator-in-chief but at Craven Cottage it was his goalscoring which proved decisive. This game was all about how early City could break Fulham's resistance, and Silva did that within five minutes, cutting in on that menacing left foot, biding his time, waiting for just enough of a gap to slip his shot through Maxime Le Marchand's plodding legs and into the corner.

The unassuming winger may not win any gongs this season but at the very least he deserves to be mentioned among the award nominees, Most revealing of all might be City's in-house awards; you sense no-one appreciates Silva's output like his team-mates.

2) Parker has a building job on his hands
Caretaker manager Scott Parker has made clear his desire to take on Fulham in a full-time role, even if – and when – they get relegated. But this is no patch-up job: Parker has a full rebuild on his hands should he stay at Craven Cottage and take them down to the Championship.

Expensive recruits like Jean Michael Seri and Aleksandar Mitrovic are likely to leave the club, while the defence which Slavisa Jokanovic brought up through the play-offs has long since been decimated and needs reinforcing. Having played Liverpool and Manchester City in back-to-back games, the only saving grace for Parker is that Fulham are unlikely to meet an attacking unit this punishing for another year at least.

3) BREAKING: Aguero, finisher supreme
OK, this is not exactly a new learning as such, but it is worth reminding ourselves every now and again of just how brilliant a finisher Sergio Aguero really is. His touch and poise in the box is exceptional, with the ability to shift his weight so quickly he turns defenders to stone when they get within tackling range.

After he shrugged off his marker here his finish past Sergio Rico was perfectly placed, whistling past the goalkeeper's head and into the top corner from a tight angle. Aguero's relentless goalscoring is loved by City fans and recognised by everyone else, but his exceptional talents might never be fully appreciated until the day he departs the Etihad.

4) Swings and roundabouts for Guardiola
The only blight on the copybook for Pep Guardiola, besides a slow second half which might have frustrated the Spaniard's pursuit of perfection, was the injury sustained by Aguero. The striker stopped moving on around 55 minutes, gave a squint of discomfort to the bench, and a few moments later he was wrapped up on the sidelines with a pack of ice.

It looked like a minor muscle strain and the way he walked off the pitch unassisted suggested he is unlikely to be out for long, but it is not the first time Aguero has picked up an injury around the international break, and Guardiola will rightly be concerned ahead of a packed and potentially decisive April calendar.

On the other hand, the manager will have been pleased with the chance to give Fernandinho his first minutes on the pitch for several weeks, coming on late to reacquaint himself with Premier League football. While Aguero can at least be replaced by the talented Brazilian Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho does not have an obvious understudy. He wasn't missed at Craven Cottage, but he will be essential in the clutch moments ahead if City are to go on and make history.

5) City move ahead in more ways than one
It may only be for 24 hours, but Manchester City moved back into the hot-seat in their game of musical chairs with Liverpool, who play on Sunday. Yet this felt about more than just their positions in the table: City have won every game since they were shocked by Newcastle at St James's Park in January, now extending that run to 11 successive league wins, and that relentless streak has increased the pressure on Liverpool to match them stride for stride.

City also added to their goal difference here. Not so long ago the two front-runners were fairly well matched in those numbers, but City now have an advantage of eight – and its one that might yet prove invaluable.

Fulham fans tear into side for lack of spirit in defeat to Manchester City

Fulham fell to a seventh consecutive Premier League defeat on Saturday, losing 2-0 to table toppers Manchester City.

The Citizens only needed five minutes to break the deadlock, and when Sergio Aguero swept home with half an hour gone, the match was all but over.

Fulham supporters tore into their side for a lack of spirit during the match, questioning the desire of a group of players who seem resigned to their fate of relegation.

When Fulham's official account tweeted the final score and claimed the second half display was "spirited," supporters took exception on Twitter.

Two terrible giveaways from Joe Bryan and Timothy Fosu-Mensah led to the two goals and it wasn't lost on supporters that both players were summer signings

In all, it was a torrid day for Fulham supporters, with another loss simply bringing relegation ever closer. There were positives to take from the match, such as the bright touches of Floyd Ayite and the ambitious runs of Ryan Sessegnon, but the squad looked bereft of confidence.

On Tuesday, Fulham travel to Watford and hope they can break their abysmal run of losses when they arrive at Vicarage Road.

Fulham Are Completely Useless

There's no shame in losing to Manchester City, particularly if you're a relegation side, but Fulham deserve to be heavily scrutinized for their performance on Saturday, losing 2-0 at home to the Premier League leaders. Honestly, it was so much worse than 2-0 implies; City got started with a fifth-minute goal from Portuguese spark-plug Bernardo Silva, and from then on, basically played the entire match in first gear:

The Manchester Sky Blues controlled 66 percent of the possession, as they normally do against over-matched sides, and they poured in 24 shots to boot. Fulham's midfield was nonexistent, and considering City have the most midfield talent of any club in the world, it's not surprising that they would have such dominance in the middle of the pitch. But Fulham didn't have it to make it so easy for them; David Silva, Ilkay Gündoğan, and Kevin De Bruyne looked like they were having a kick-around in the park, rather than playing in the supposed best league in the world.

You can't blame City for this. They're in a dogfight with Liverpool for the title, and they will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League quarterfinals next month. Whenever a top team gets a chance to take their foot off the throttle and coast to an easy three points, they take it. Unfortunately for Fulham, they've been an easy three points for the majority of this season.

It wasn't supposed to be this way. Fulham were promoted to the Premier League after winning the promotion playoffs last season, and they spent accordingly in the transfer window. Nice's Jean Michaël Seri (once a Barcelona target!), Marseille's André Zambo Anguissa, Swansea's Alfie Mawson, and Newcastle's Aleksandar Mitrovic (the only signing to somewhat live up to his fee, leading Fulham with 10 Premier League goals this season) were brought in for a total of $104.7 million in the summer. There was a general excitement that this retooled side could not just survive the Premier League grinder, but actually thrive and finish in the lower ends of the mid-table.

Sure, most of the promotion hype was directed at last year's Championship title winners, Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have fulfilled that promise, currently sitting in seventh place in the English top flight. But Fulham...Fulham were supposed to be better than this.

After Saturday's loss, Fulham have scored just 29 goals in 32 games, while conceding a division-high 72; it's not even close when it comes to that unwanted title, as Burnley has conceded the second-most goals with 59. They are one of the weakest teams at defending from the wings, as City proved on Saturday; both goals came from the right side of the pitch, as Bernardo Silva carved them up like his name was Lionel and he was Argentine. And, as if the on-the-field misery weren't enough, Fulham were also part of the dumbest "scandal" of the Premier League season, all over a missed penalty and some training ground fighting.

While Fulham is saved the indignity of being in last place in the Premier League—Huddersfield Town has been even more futile, sitting three points behind the London side, but at least there were no delusions of grandeur there—there is no longer any doubt that there will be Championship soccer again at Craven Cottage next season.

For all the money that Fulham spent, and even for the mid-season hiring of former Leicester City miracle worker Claudio Ranieri (who was summarily fired after 17 games, only three of them wins), the Ham Boys are caught up in the English soccer yo-yo nonetheless. Manchester City brought their C+ game on Saturday, and Fulham could only respond with what they have known all season long: a big, fat F.

Scott Parker transcript: Every word on Man City defeat, Aleksandar Mitrovic's injury & more

The Fulham caretaker was speaking to the press after his side's 2-0 loss to Manchester City

How do you assess that game? Very difficult?

We understood and realised the challenge we faced before kick off and it was proven that way. At times it was very difficult and the first half we started nervy, first ten minutes we wanted to stamp our way on it, understood in the way we set up and we knew there was risk with that which we recongised.

Some mistakes along the way, but the lads were brave, certainly in the first half. 1-0 down after five minutes you can fold a bit but overall a difficult afternoon which we recongised.

Individual mistakes again for Fulham

That was the way we wanted to play, against a team where ultimately if you give the ball back to them and make the pitch so small, the pitch becomes so big for them and you can't get up the pitch. Certainly the way we wanted to play was through the thirds and we understand the risk that comes with that, and that proved the case with a couple of mistakes.

I wouldn't change the way we set up or wanted the lads to play, but if there was one thing I was pleased with is the bravery in what they did today because it's quite easy in a football match against a world class team like Man City are to go and hide, play back to front really quick and not pass the ball.

I know ultimately we lost the came and errors cost us, but I was pleased with certain parts.

(Image: Jonathan Brady/PA Wire)

Liverpool, Chelsea and City out of the way - next six games chance for you to show what you can do as a head coach?

In terms of me personally it is what it is. I'm bothered about the team - I want the team to show what they can do, at times this year we've shown glimpses and we've shown glimpses in the past three games.

On a personal level, it's been a tough season and I've been given the reigns, but I'm not thinking about myself, I'm thinking about the team and us trying to get some results and some credibility.

Assess the relegation battle?

It's a cliche but there's six games left but we all understand the predicament ahead and where we lie in that, it's a tough ask of course, the main focus is the six games.

We push and end the season on a positive in what has been a disappointing campaign.

Aleksandar Mitrovic's injury?

He has been struggling for a few weeks with an ongoing issue, he played for Serbia in a tough game with Portugal and came back and he didn't have a chance today.

Whether we can get him right for Tuesday will be on a day to day basis. We'll try get some treatment into him but I coudn't make a call for Tuesday. He has something wrong with his stomach.

Fulham fans protest against ticket prices for Man City game

Fulham fans have protested against the club's ticket prices, with the cheapest ticket on offer for their game against Manchester City reportedly costing £55.

Fans assembled in the vicinity of Craven Cottage several hours before the lunchtime kick-off against City as part of the #StopTheGreed campaign led by independent Fulham fans group Fulhamish.

The group are concerned that the club runs the risk of driving fans away with their individual match-ticket policy, even though the club's adult season-ticket prices for this season were among the cheapest in the Premier League.

A giant banner emblazoned with the slogan #StopTheGreed was on display outside the ground before the match, while 10,000 flyers were also distributed by supporters.

The flyers were held aloft by fans inside the stadium in the 55th minute of the game, which was televised live on Sky Sports. Fans also began chanting 'stop the greed'.

Scott Parker admits confidence is low at Fulham after defeat to Man City
Fulham sink further towards relegation after 2-0 defeat by Man City

Scott Parker admits confidence is low at Fulham after their fourth straight defeat under the caretaker manager left them closer to relegation.

Fulham were beaten 2-0 by champions Manchester City on Saturday, leaving them on the brink of dropping out of the Premier League having only just been promoted.

Although Parker admitted belief is low, the 38-year-old is confident the players are on board with what he is trying to do.

He told Sky Sports: "We've got a tough run of games and confidence is low when you are where we are in the league but I've seen some massive positives.

"I see a squad of players that are right on board and giving everything. I have no doubt that with time we can turn things around.

Tom Cairney looks dejected during the defeat

"It was a tough day. From the outset we knew the challenge ahead was against a really good team. We made a nervous start and when you go 1-0 down after five minutes, it was always going to be a tough hill to climb and so it proved.

"In saying that, I thought we dug in and showed some bits at times against a world-class side. But not enough, really, at times."

Parker, who took over from the sacked Claudio Ranieri last month, was full of praise for Pep Guardiola's City, who returned to the top of the Premier League until Sunday evening at least.

"The mistakes we made are coming from pressure from an organised, well-coached team. They put us in those scenarios. I thought the only way we could confront City today was to try to play.

"We lost [Aleksandar] Mitrovic so we needed to find a way of playing through the thirds. The mistakes happen when you take risks like that. Sometimes, it happens, and it went against us today.

"If you sit off these and give the ball straight back to them, it becomes an even more difficult afternoon, to be honest with you. We've not got the result today, but the manner in which we set up and the way I want us to play, that's not going to change.

"If you give the ball too easy for these. They won't let you breathe. Mistakes happen when you play that well but I thought we had some nice spells at 1-0. We knew the size of task ahead of today and it proved a difficult afternoon."

Fulham have conceded 29 goals off individual errors this season. Here's a look at all of them.

Everyone knows Fulham have the worst defence in the Premier League. They've conceded 72 goals in 32 games and have let in at least two goals in their last 12 league matches. But the true extent of their awfulness hasn't been investigated in-depth.

After inspiration from football.london reporter Ryan O'Donovan, here is a comprehensive list of all the goals the Whites have conceded through glaring, individual errors this season.

It isn't pretty — the numbers work out to 29 goals conceded through inexplicable defensive lapses. In addition, it must be noted that these are subjective tallies and all are invited to make their own list. The errors listed were limited to the most egregious switch-offs, and in a season filled with a plethora of mistakes, it was no easy feat to compile the final count.

Mitrovic struggling with injury as relegation looms for Fulham

Scott Parker says it is touch and go whether Aleksandar Mitrovic will be available for the trip to Watford on Tuesday night – a match that could see the Whites relegated.

The Serbian striker was unable to play in Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City, having returned from international duty with an existing stomach muscle injury further strained.

The Whites failed to get a shot on target against the Premier League champions and looked toothless without him. A defeat in midweek would confirm their demotion.

"Alex has been struggling for a few weeks now with an ongoing issue," said caretaker boss Parker.

"He obviously played for Serbia in the week – a tough game against Portugal – and he came back and didn't have a chance today.

"Whether we can get him right and turn him around for Tuesday is probably going to be on a day to day basis to see where we are with him.

"We're trying to get some treatment into him but really I couldn't make a call about whether he'll be ready for Tuesday or not."

Whether Mitrovic makes it or not, Fulham are surely just playing for pride now, and Parker says he is not thinking about getting the wins he surely needs to persuade the hierarchy to upgrade him from caretaker to full time manager next season.

"On a personal level, of course, I'm in a position where it's been a tough season and I've been given the reins for these remaining games and it's difficult," he said.

"But I'm not really thinking about myself in this situation, I'm thinking about the team and us trying to get some results and get a bit of credibility really.

"I'm more bothered about the team. I want the team to show and the players to show what they can do really. At times this year, we've showed glimpses and certainly we've shown glimpses in the last three, albeit very tough games.

"There are six games left and while it's still mathematically possible, I think we all understand the predicament and where we lie.

"It's a tough ask, of course, the main focus now is we push and end the season on a positive after what was been obviously a disappointing campaign."

Parker refused to be overly critical about his side's performance against City given the quality of the opposition.

"I thought the lads were brave, certainly in the first half," he said. "One-nil down after five minutes, you can fold a bit, but overall it was a difficult afternoon, which we recognised.

"It's quite easy, when you're playing against a world class team like Man City, to go and hide. I know we've lost and individual errors have cost us but I was pleased with certain parts."
