Leander Dendoncker's fine volley saw Wolves finally break down Fulham

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo says it would be "stupid" to think about European football despite his side moving a step closer to a seventh-placed Premier League finish and potentially a Europa League spot next season with victory over Fulham.

After a largely frustrating 75 minutes for the hosts at Molineux, Joao Moutinho played in Matt Doherty down the right for the defender to curl in a fine cross that Leander Dendoncker emphatically volleyed inside the near post.

Wolves will be guaranteed to finish seventh in their first season after promotion if Leicester fail to beat Premier League leaders Manchester City on Monday.

If Nuno's side do secure seventh and City subsequently beat Watford in the FA Cup final, then Wolves will land a Europa League place, returning to Europe after a 39-year wait.

"The FA Cup still has to be played, it would be stupid to think about Europe," said Nuno.

"It's nothing to do with the table, it's the how - the how is much more important.

"It started two years ago and we will never forget where we came from."

Superb Wolves forward Diogo Jota went close four times, twice sliding wide and twice drawing fine saves from Fulham keeper Sergio Rico, while Dendoncker also hit the bar with a header.

The already-relegated visitors should have taken the lead on 62 minutes but Aleksandar Mitrovic scooped his first-time effort over the bar after he was picked out in the middle by Ryan Sessegnon.

Fulham midfielder Harvey Elliott became the youngest ever Premier League player at 16 years and 30 days by coming on in the 88th minute.

Wolves have oddly had problems against struggling sides this season, having lost six of their 11 previous matches against teams in the bottom six heading into that round of fixtures.

For long periods of this game, it looked like a compact but limited Fulham would add a goalless draw to that record but Wolves were determined not to let their last home game be a disappointment after a season of thrilling matches at Molinuex.

Jota weaved his way past Fulham defenders all afternoon, picking up a yellow card for simulation early on, but more often drawing fouls and getting his team surging forward on the counter-attack.

In the first half, a brilliant flick from Raul Jimenez led to Jota forcing Rico to palm it round corner, before he got past his man and slid wide across goal with his left foot.

He similarly slipped a left-footed effort beyond the far post after the break and then saw a brilliant volley pushed onto the bar by Rico as the Portuguese ultimately failed to get the goal his performance deserved.

Doherty then lashed a superb strike high into the net but was rightly called offside when Jonny's initial shot was deflected into his path.

But Dendoncker finally broke through. Having seen his header from a corner rebound off the bar in the first half, the Belgium midfielder showed excellent technique to volley the ball from just behind his body and edge Wolves towards the highest finish for a promoted side since Ipswich came fifth in 2000-01.

Fulham look to the future
Defeat ended a run of three successive victories for Fulham after their relegation was confirmed last month but there were again some promising signs from caretaker boss Scott Parker's side.

They were comfortable in possession, albeit rarely incisive around Wolves' area, their defenders made some fine covering tackles and Rico impressed in goal, also denying Doherty's header at the near post and pushing away Ruben Neves' 25-yard drive.

The visitors could even have had a club record fourth Premier League win in a row had Mitrovic not miscued his strike when free in the area after fine work from Sessegnon down the right, while Joe Bryan also drew a decent save from Rui Patricio.

Ultimately this match just reinforced the gap between these two promoted sides, with Wolves plotting how they might even break into the top six and Fulham facing another tough task to return straight away from the Championship.

And the Cottagers offered a brief nod to that future, bringing on Elliott, who beat the previous Premier League mark of former Fulham defender Matthew Briggs.

Briggs was 16 years and 68 days when he played against Middlesbrough in May 2007.

Man of the match - Diogo Jota (Wolves)

'An important win' - reaction

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo told BBC Sport: "This is an important win, it was important to the atmosphere at Molineux. Everyone expected us to win but it was difficult because we faced a tough team.

"But I'm really pleased with the way we finished the season at home, the fans have been fantastic this season.

"We had to be focused, organised and disciplined because Fulham had chances also, it was a tight game."

Fulham caretaker manager Scott Parker told BBC Sport: "We are a bit disappointed. We knew the task ahead of us. We had a game plan that we worked hard on this week. We wanted to take the sting out of Wolves.

"It's a tough place to come here but I felt we dominated the ball today and for us that's the best way to defend. We have conceded one goal in four now and that's down to the players.

"Our main aim now is next year and the task ahead, it's a big task and we know what we want to do."

Fulham's troubles on the road - stats

Wolves have won 57 points in the Premier League this season, the most by a newly promoted side since Ipswich Town in 2000-01 (66 points).
Fulham have lost 25 Premier League games this season, the most by a newly promoted side since Derby County in 2007-08 (29 defeats).
No player has more assists for Wolves in all competitions this season than Matt Doherty (eight).
This was Fulham's 16th away Premier League defeat of the season - only Burnley in 2009-10 have lost more in a single season (17).
Wolves named their 14th unchanged Premier League starting XI this season - no side has done so more often (also Burnley on 14).

What's next?

Wolves are away at Liverpool on the final day of the season on Sunday, 12 May, while Fulham host Newcastle, with both matches at 15:00 BST.

Parker Reaction

Scott Parker was left thinking what might have been after Fulham were beaten by the finest of margins by Wolves.

The hosts did have the better of the opportunities at Molineux, but there may have been a different outcome had Aleksandar Mitrović taken the chance which fell his way at 0-0.

"We came here today knowing it was going to be a tough game," Parker said. "We wanted to take the sting out of it and follow the gameplan of denying Wolves the ball, and I felt we did that very, very well.

"You're dealing in fine margins in the sense that when you come away from home you work your opportunities, and we worked a big opportunity but today it didn't go in for us.

"Of course we rode our luck at times, Wolves had some good chances and in the end they put one away, but I'm very proud of the team and the way we played. It was very pleasing.

"Since we came in eight or nine weeks ago, we've shown real improvement, and last three or four weeks the results have shown that as well which makes it a lot easier.

"Last game of the season now [next week against Newcastle], and our main focus is next year, planning for what's going to be a massive campaign for us, a massive year of trying to bounce back and get into this league.

"We need to try and prepare as well as we can now."

Harvey Elliott was given a first runout for the senior side late on, becoming the youngest player in Premier League history, but Parker insists the 16-year-old was there on merit.

"It was a massive moment for Harvey," he stated. "He wasn't entering the field for sentimental reasons, not because he's a young kid and we want to give him a record, he's on the field because he deserves it and he's shown enough quality for the last four weeks in training.

"That's the reason he came on today, and because we thought he could change the game a little bit or try get us the goal we were searching for.

"He's a special talent, one we're going to look after, one we're going to nurture, and we're going to try and turn him into a top player, which hopefully he can become."

Wolves bid farewell to former promotion partners Fulham with Leander Dendoncker winner

Leander Dendoncker scored the only goal, but the gulf in class between the two promoted sides was clear Credit: Reuters

For two clubs who arrived together in the Premier League, this was a parting of the ways. Wolves, so impressive in their first term back in the top flight, will spend the summer plotting ways to attain further heights. Fulham must rebuild after a rapid return to the Championship.

Victory enabled Wolves to pass a couple of notable milestones and keeps them in contention for a Europa League place next season.

Nuno Espirito Santo's cultured creation have become the first promoted team to win 16 matches in a Premier League campaign since Reading in 2007, while scaling 57 points represents the highest newcomers' tally since Ipswich's 60 in 2001.

Nuno was presented with an honorary doctorate of sport by the University of Wolverhampton before the match and he has certainly provided a season-long tutorial on not only how to survive among the elite but also prosper with thrilling intent.

It fell short of being a masterclass against Fulham, but that is to the credit of the long-since relegated Londoners who arrived on the back of three successive victories and were unwilling to go quietly as the curtain fell on a Molineux party.

They were finally undone by another moment of high class from Wolves, Leander Dendocker lashing home  following a sweet build-up 15 minutes from the end.

There is reason to hope for Fulham, too. Caretaker manager Scott Parker, who could well be confirmed in the job on  a permanent basis in coming days,  has imbued the Thamesiders with a new sense of purpose and resilience.

It has all come too late for this season, but seems the perfect template for a campaign in the Championship. And with one eye on the future, Parker gave an 88th-minute debut to Harvey Elliott, who at 16 years and 30 days became the youngest player in Premier League history.

There was scarcely time for him to touch the ball but Parker said: "It was not a sentimental thing. He's shown enough quality in training recently. He's a special talent and we will nurture him."

Although Wolves had been largely in control, with Diogo Jota a regular threat and Dendoncker heading against the crossbar, Fulham wasted a magnificent opportunity to seize the lead just beyond the hour-mark when Aleksandar Mitrovic scooped over from 10 yards.

That was the cue for Wolves to move up a gear. Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico kept out Ruben Neves's blast and Matt Doherty's downward nod before Raul Jimenez went close with a flicked header. Still Wolves pressed. Doherty finally had the ball in the back of  Fulham's net only to be correctly ruled offside but the breakthrough was not long delayed.

Joao Moutinho was the instigator, moving the ball on to Doherty, whose crisp cross was met by Dendoncker, hovering to apply the perfect volleyed finish to the vociferous delight of the home crowd.

Nuno said: "It was a special day for everybody. Molineux is so behind the team we cannot thank them enough."

Project X Fall to Fulham

Motspur Park in New Malden was the setting for the third fixture in the Project X calendar. Fulham Football Club played host as the two sides locked horns in the 11H15 kickoff on Saturday morning.

It was more of the same from the perspective of physicality but the PJX were better conditioned to deal with it following their 2-all draw with Queens Park Rangers less than 24 hours prior.

Fulham showed early intent as they looked to dominate possession and dictate terms on home soil. The visitors, sporting a changed line-up, maintained their shape throughout the opening exchanges of the half and looked to be getting into some sort of rhythm, before Fulham pounced on a forced error to open the scoring in the 25th minute.

The visitors had it all to do as they held back the Fulham attack and the rearguard action sparked a change from the bench fairly early with the introduction of Katlego Cwinyane. The attacker, who has been in sparkling form upfront, immediately began to threaten as he pinned The Cottagers into their own defensive third with his penetrating runs and forceful movements.

He would be rewarded in the 42nd minute when he got onto the end of a poorly executed backpass, speeding between the defender and keeper before poking home on the stroke of half time.

It was 1-1 going into the break, with the visitors looking to assert themselves on the game.

The second half saw a much-changed output by PJX, as they started to enjoy more possession in the final third. Fulham held firm with their centre back pairing keeping things tidy in front of goal. Project X would in turn play themselves into trouble on a few occasions but managed to hold out, with Sibusiso Ngwenya make some important saves.

It would take until the 84th minute for the stalemate to be broken as Fulham capitalized on yet another error by The Tourists, and Ngwenya was once again isolated in defence for the shot that nestled into the back of the net.

The Fulham result marks the third loss in 14 games for Project X, with two games left to play.

Starting XI: Ngwenya (GK), Marcelo (C), Ramonyai, Sesane, Mazibuko, Tshobeni, Mabena, Moremi, Boitumelo, Maphumulo, Madolo

Fulham winger Harvey Elliott becomes youngest ever Premier League player aged 16 years and 30 days as he features against Wolves

Fulham starlet Harvey Elliott became the Premier League's youngest ever player
Elliott, aged 16 years and 30 days, was brought on in 88th minute vs Wolves
He breaks the previous record set by Matthew Briggs, also of Fulham, in 2007

Fulham starlet Harvey Elliott became the youngest player in Premier League history when he came on against Wolves on Saturday.

Highly regarded winger Elliott, aged 16 years and 30 days, replaced Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa in the 88th minute at Molineux.

The Premier League's previous youngest player also played for Fulham, with Matthew Briggs having featured against Middlesbrough in 2007 aged 16 years and 65 days.

Fulham's Harvey Elliott became the Premier League's youngest player at 16 years and 30 days

In September 2018 Elliott became the youngest player in Fulham's history, aged 15 years and 174 days, when he featured against Millwall in the Carabao Cup.

The England Under-17 international has made five appearances for Fulham's Under-23 side this season and provided an assist against Manchester United.

Usually deployed on the right wing, he is also capable of operating on the left flank or as an attacking midfielder if required.

Possessing excellent close control, Elliott joined Fulham from QPR's academy at a very young age.

Elliott had been an unused substitute in Fulham's Premier League games against Everton, Bournemouth and Cardiff in recent weeks.

Wolves won 1-0 against already relegated Fulham, with Leander Dendoncker scoring the only goal of the game.

Fulham's Harvey Elliot becomes youngest ever Premier League player
Elliot has been watched by host of top clubs from the Premier League and Europe

Fulham academy prospect Harvey Elliot has become the youngest ever Premier League player after being introduced as a late substitute against Wolves.

At 16 years and 30 days, the attacking midfielder beats the record held by another former Fulham player, Matthew Briggs, who had been the youngest at 16 years and 65 days since 2007.

Elliot, who made his Fulham debut as a 15-year-old in the EFL Cup win at Millwall last September, replaced Andre Zambo Anguissa in the 88th minute of the 1-0 defeat at Molineux - his second first-team appearance.

The London-born player became Fulham's youngest ever player in the clash at the New Den last September.

He is considered one of Fulham's top prospects and has been watched by host of top clubs from the Premier League and Europe.

Elliot - who is still on a youth contract at Craven Cottage - has scored five goals for the U18s this season and also been a regular for the club's U21s side.

Scott Parker still unsure over Fulham future

Fulham caretaker boss Scott Parker admits the club needs clarity to give them a perfect platform for a Premier League return.

The already-relegated Cottagers lost 1-0 at Wolves after Leander Dendoncker's strike 15 minutes from time won it for the hosts.

It was Fulham's 25th Premier League defeat of the season, ending a three-match winning run.

Parker has impressed since replacing Claudio Ranieri as caretaker in February but knows the club needs a plan after next week's final game at home to Newcastle.

He said: "Not just for me, as a club ahead of what's going to be a massive year, we need to have a clear idea of what way we are going to go.

"We're seven days away from ending the season and a lot of planning needs to go into next year. I'm sure it'll come in due course.

"We have shown real improvement and results have suggested that as well. Our main focus is planning for next year and what will be a massive campaign for us.

"My message has always been the same. I've enjoyed every minute of it. I want to be a manager and if it's at Fulham, perfect. If it isn't I'll be a manager somewhere else. The owners will make the best decision for the club."

Parker also made Harvey Elliott the Premier League's youngest ever player.

The midfielder was an 88th-minute substitute for Andre-Franck Zambo in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Wolves ages 16 years and 30 days.

Parker added: "It was a massive moment for Harvey, I said to the boys he's not entering the field for sentimental reasons or he's a young kid and we want to give him a record. He deserves it."

The visitors were already behind by then after Dendoncker steered in Matt Doherty's cross.

Diogo Jota and Dendoncker had hit the bar but Wolves survived a let off at 0-0 when Aleksandar Mitrovic shot over.

Only Leicester can beat Wolves to seventh – and a Europa League qualifying spot if Watford lose to Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Should the Foxes lose at City on Monday Wolves will wrap up seventh with a game to spare.

Boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: "It's nothing to do with the table, it's the how. We started with 18 players plus the goalkeepers.

"Training every day, working every day, competing at all the games, the how is much more important.

"To do it requires the commitment of the players and staff – everyone. The chef who prepares the chicken after the game is important.

"It started two years ago and we will never forget where we came from. The FA Cup still has to be played, it would be stupid to think about that (Europe)."

Tom Cairney urges Fulham to appoint Scott Parker as full-time manager

Scott Parker led Fulham to three straight wins before the defeat to Wolves

Tom Cairney has urged the Fulham hierarchy to appoint Scott Parker as the team's full-time manager.

After the already-relegated Whites were beaten at Wolves in their penultimate Premier League game of the season, Cairney agreed it was time the players knew who was taking care of them in the Championship next term.

"I've said for a long time that I think Scott has done an incredible job and, in my eyes, I think he is the right man for the job," he said.

"The way he has got us playing in such a short space of time, in the hardest league in the world, is a credit to him. I believe he is the man to take us forward so we'll see."

Cairney committed his future to Fulham with a new five-year contract earlier this week and Parker is understood to want to do the same as the team's permanent boss.

Tom Cairney committed his future to Fulham earlier this week

Since he succeeded Claudio Ranieri as their third manager this season, Parker secured three straight victories over Everton, Bournemouth and Cardiff and noticeably improved performances.

The former Tottenham and England midfielder said last month: "I'm ambitious. I want to be a football manager.

"Whether that's at Fulham come the end of the season or whether that's on another path which my career takes me, then so be it."

Dodged Bullet: Chelsea and Jean Michael Seri

It is never nice for a club when a player decides to snub a move to join them, however, one player might have actually unknowingly helped Chelsea out.

According to a report by The Times, Jean Michael Seri revealed just why he decided to join the Blues' west London rivals Fulham instead of them at Stamford Bridge last summer.

"When I played for Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal, Nice came for me and they really came. Fulham wanted me the same way. They said, 'We want you, come to Fulham.'", he said. "Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, they saw me but they didn't say, 'We want you.' Because Fulham gave me this respect, although other clubs wanted me, I wanted to sign for Fulham.

"Fulham said to my president, 'We want Mica Seri, talk to him if he's interested because we know Chelsea, Manchester want him and he almost signed for Barcelona but we are back in the Premier League.' My president calls me, he says, 'Fulham want you, do you want to go?' I say, 'If they want me, they respect me. The big clubs want me but Fulham show they want me.' "

Having joined the Cottagers for a fee thought to be around £25million, which also included Maxime Le Marchand, he was tipped to have a huge impact and help a then-Slavisa Jokanovic led team to Premier League survival in their first campaign back in the top-flight.

However, Seri's performances have been rather disappointing for a player of his quality and his 32 appearances have not really brought much joy to the side.

And, it seems he is not prepared to try and get Fulham back into the Premier League next season, with rumours stating that he wants to make a swift return to France, with AS Monaco thought to be prepared to make that happen.

It would have been rather difficult to see where he would have fit in the Chelsea side this season with the likes of Jorginho, N'Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovacic all battling it out for a place in the middle of Maurizio Sarri's starting XI.

The Blues and Marina Granovskaia can surely think themselves lucky that they did not have another costly flop on their hands.

Southend 2-1 Sunderland:
Shrimpers retain League One status

Stephen Humphrys bagged a late winner to keep Southend in Sky Bet League One with a 2-1 victory against Sunderland at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers seemed to be heading back to League Two after Chris Maguire's penalty cancelled out John White's opener, but Humphrys' 87th-minute goal sparked wild scenes as Southend stayed up on goal difference.

The Shrimpers started brightly with Dru Yearwood wasting two excellent chances to score and they finally made the breakthrough with White netting an overhead kick after Stephen McLaughlin's right-wing corner had only been partially cleared.

Sunderland hit back after the break and made their pressure tell in the 75th minute with Maguire scoring from the spot after White had been adjudged to have brought down Charlie Wyke.

But Southend replied to score three minutes from time with Humphrys, who was playing with a protective mask due to a broken nose, fired home from close range to spark wild celebrations as the Shrimpers avoided relegation.

Fulham, West Brom and Brighton eyeing up Bristol City manager Lee Johnson - EXCLUSIVE

LEE JOHNSON will be a manager in demand this summer – if he fails to lead Bristol City into the Premier League.

Lee Johnson could be heading out of Bristol City if they don't go up (Pic: GETTY)

Fulham, who are heading in the opposite direction, are waiting to see whether Johnson's men reach the Championship Play Offs before deciding on the future of current caretaker Scott Parker.

And the Londoners are not alone with their interest in Johnson, 37.

Top-flight strugglers Brighton and and City's potential promotion rivals, West Brom are also monitoring his situation closely.

After beating Millwall in midweek the Robins head into the final day of the Championship still in the hunt for the last play-off spot.

To take it, they must win at Hull and hope Derby lose at home to the Baggies and Middlesbrough fail to take three points at relegated Rotherham.

Should they miss out, however, the West Country's resolve to keep their sought-after boss will be seriously tested – along with his own desire to stay for a fourth year.

The good news for the Robins is that Johnson appears in no hurry to leave. Indeed, he says he is already planning big for next season.

Ahead of the crunch trip to the Tigers, the Ashton Gate chief revealed: "There'll be new players coming in this summer, without question.

"The club's in an absolutely brilliant position to drive forward - whatever division we're in."

On what is bound to be a tension-riddled afternoon, Johnson intends to be across all the action unfolding at Pride Park and the New York stadium.

The ex-City midfielder added: "I want to be in touch. That's important. It doesn't change the players' mindset on the pitch. We've still got to capitalise on moments in the game.

"I know we can and I know we've got the talent to do it. I respect Hull but this game is all about us."
