Aaron Hughes Retires

Fulham favourite Aaron Hughes announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday evening.

The defender relayed his decision to his Northern Ireland teammates after their 1-0 win in Belarus.

Now aged 39, Hughes enjoyed a marvellous career, racking up 777 appearances for club and country since his debut for Newcastle United in a UEFA Champions League match against Barcelona at the Nou Camp almost 22 years ago.

After eight seasons in the first team on Tyneside, Hughes headed south to Aston Villa where he spent two years, before moving to London to join Fulham.

Recruited by Lawrie Sanchez in the summer of 2007 having worked together in the national setup, Hughes cost the Club just £1m, which must surely go down as one of our wisest ever investments.

After helping the Whites avoid relegation at the end of what was a difficult campaign, Hughes became the bedrock of an organised, solid side under Roy Hodgson, forming a fantastic partnership with Brede Hangeland at the back.

The pair worked brilliantly together, with the fans soon referring to them as our very own Thames Barrier. Their styles complemented each other perfectly, and while Hughes wasn't the tallest of centre-backs, his leap and reading of the game more than made up for it.

Hughes was one of only three ever presents – alongside Mark Schwarzer and Danny Murphy – as Fulham finished in our highest ever position of seventh in the 2008/09 Premier League, which led to European qualification.

Fulham played 19 matches in the Europa League in 2009/10 as we reached the Final against all the odds, with Hughes featuring in 17 of those – starting in Lithuania against FK Vetra in June, and concluding in the Final when Atletico Madrid edged us out in Hamburg 10 months later.

Hughes continued to be a regular at the heart of defence under his namesake Mark Hughes the following season, featuring 43 times and scoring his first goal for the Club against West Ham United.

He departed Fulham in January 2014 having made 250 appearances across a six-and-a-half-year spell.

After leaving SW6, Hughes represented Queens Park Rangers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Melbourne City and Hearts.

Hughes played 112 times for Northern Ireland – a record for an outfield player – with 48 of those caps coming as captain.

He helped his nation reach their first major tournament for 30 years when they qualified for Euro 2016, and he played in three of their four matches in France.

A consummate professional, and just a genuinely nice man, everyone at Fulham would like to wish Aaron all the very best in his retirement.

REPORT; Palace Looking To Land Ivory Coast International This Summer

Last summer, Fulham fans were full of optimism at what the 2018-19 season had in store for them but with relegation now confirmed, they're facing up to the prospect of losing some key players, with Crystal Palace believed to be keen on Ivory Coast international Jean Michaël Seri.

Having first made a name for himself in Ligue 1 with Nice, Seri will not be short of offers from across the continent and alongside Palace, Monaco are thought to be making admiring glances in the midfielder's direction but if he is relatively settled in London, a switch to Selhurst Park could make an awful lot of sense

It is thought that Palace would favour an initial loan deal with the prospect of making Seri's stay a permanent one further down the line but with Fulham likely to want to cut their losses altogether if they are to be without him, we may have to reevaluate that stance if we are intent on landing him ahead of his numerous other suitors.

At 27, the central midfielder could offer the sense of dynamism and link up play that Palace were sometimes missing from the middle of the park last term. In truth, it's likely that Max Meyer was brought in with the intention of pulling those strings but for whatever reason, Roy Hodgson has seldom chosen to use the German in a central role behind our front-men. Could Seri offer what Meyer couldn't next term and nail down a regular starting place? He'd be faced with stiff competition but it would be silly to write him off on the basis of a poor season at a side who looked destined for the drop from roughly October onwards.

In his most productive season with Nice, (2016/17) Seri managed to notch seven goals and nine assists, alerting clubs across Europe to his presence; there's no doubt that in the right environment he's a player with a lot to offer, now it's just a case of working out whether or not a switch to Selhurst is something he's open to.

Thomas: Tottenham will sign Sessegnon

Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has heaped praise on Ryan Sessegnon, who he fully expects to be a Tottenham player when the new season kicks off in August.

Sessegnon has been linked with Tottenham for a while but, talking on the Last Word on Spurs Transfer Special podcast (29mins) he said, "For the first time of all these windows it's one I expect to get done."

However, Thomas doesn't think that Tottenham are in any rush to sign him.

"It's correct he wants to join Spurs, that's how I understand it" Thomas said, "and because of that Tottenham can afford to be quite relaxed.

"It's been reported it's been close for ages but it's not close until the two clubs start talking about doing a deal and I understand that hasn't happened yet.

"Man United and Juve are in the background but they know Ryan wants to stay in London and go to Spurs. He's not going to sign a new contract, he's got one year left at Fulham, they've been relegated, Pochettino loves him, has done for ages. All the talent is still there, 19-years-old, what more do you want?"

OPINION

Sessegnon to Tottenham has been a long-running transfer story so it's amazing to think that the player is still only 19-years-old. He had a tough season in the Premier League with Fulham, seeing his side get relegated, but this does seem like one deal Spurs will definitely get over the line this summer. It's the right time for him to leave Fulham, with his contract running out next year. He wants to move to Tottenham and Pochettino rates him highly, and this is the last window Fulham will be able to cash in for a huge fee. They're not going to get £50million for him but they will get a sizeable fee and that will help them rebuild in the Championship. It will be fascinating to see what Sessegnon can do when he plays for a top Premier League team and it will be fascinating to see whether Pochettino has him down for the left-back position or whether he'll be used further forward.

Bayer Leverkusen interested in deal for Fulham striker

According to German publisher Sport Bild (via Bulinews), Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are interested in pursuing a deal for Fulham striker Aleksander Mitrovic.

Mitrovic scored 11 Premier League goals last campaign in a struggling Fulham side, with the Cottagers ultimately suffering relegation back down to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.

The Serbian forward is suggested to be one of the highest earners at the club, and could be on his way out this summer, as he hopes to sign for a club playing at the highest possible level.

Bayer Leverkusen finished fourth in the German top flight in the 2018/19 campaign, and in doing so have secured their place in next seasons UEFA Champions League group stages alongside Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Leipzig.

The club nicknamed ' Die Werkself' have expressed an interest in the 24-year old and could make a move in a deal worth around €20 million according to the report. Fulham would then presumably use the funds to bolster their team in the hope of bouncing back to the big time at the first time of asking.

Scott Parker's don't have too many forwards at their disposal at present, and if Mitrovic was to leave the club, they would have just Rui Fonte and Aboubakar Kamara on their books going into next season, both of which could also depart this summer window.

As well as looking into a possible deal with the Serb, Leverkusen have expressed an interest in Dinamo Zagreb's Dani Olmo, Hoffenheim's Nadiem Amiri and Watford's Dodi Lukebakio.

'I'd be amazed if he stayed' – Clubs begin to enter the race for Fulham star: Opinion

Following their relegation from the Premier League, Fulham will have a real battle on their hands to keep hold of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer.

The 24-year-old was the Cottagers' top goalscorer last season, scoring 11 goals and adding a further three assists in all competitions for the London club.

But as Scott Parker's side prepare for life back in the Sky Bet Championship, Mitrovic is a player in serious demand, with plenty of high-profile clubs believed to be in pursuit of the big Serbian.

Fenerbahce have recently been linked with a loan move for the striker, and now, reports from Germany via Sky Sports Transfer Centre (11:03) claim that Bayer Leverkusen are keen on a deal to sign him.

With clubs beginning to circle around Mitrovic, we discuss whether Fulham will be able to keep hold of him this summer or not...

George Harbey

"It seems almost inevitable that Mitrovic will be leaving Fulham this summer.

"He's far too good to be playing in the Championship having scored 11 goals in the Premier League last season, and it would be some statement of intent if they managed to keep hold of him.

"I'd be amazed if he stayed, but stranger things have happened. He has a close affinity with the club, and he might want to help them get back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking."

Kealan Hughes

"Mitrovic is far too good for the Championship as he proved in the latter half of 2018/17, and he knows it.

"That means he will likely depart this summer, it is just a question of where and who can afford his wages.

"It is unsurprising to see Bayer Leverkusen and Fenerbahce interest as he would do well at both those clubs. For Fulham fans it must be disappointing to see but they will know how difficult it is to keep hold of their better players."

Jacob Potter

"It's only a matter of time.

"He's a player that is far too good for the Championship, and I would be stunned if he was a Fulham player by the start of next season.

"He's being tracked by some top European clubs and Fulham are fighting a losing battle in keeping him at Craven Cottage.

"Fulham need to trim the wage bill ahead of next season and Mitrovic is likely to be one of the highest earners currently at the club."

Crystal Palace reportedly prepare deal for Fulham's Jean-Michael Seri but face overseas competition

Crystal Palace have been linked with Fulham's Jean-Michael Seri.

According to a report by Football.London, Crystal Palace are preparing a deal to sign Fulham's Jean-Michael Seri although it is suggested the player prefers a move back to Ligue 1.

It is claimed in the report that Palace want to sign the midfielder on loan with an option to a permanent deal, but they are not alone in pursuing him as Monaco and Galatasaray are also cited with a strong interest.

Seri arrived at Craven Cottage for a reported £20 million fee last summer. Many felt the Whites pulled off quite a coup at the time, with Seri regarded as a really top prospect interesting bigger clubs.

The 27-year-old, however, struggled to make much of an impression as he featured in 32 Premier League matches with Fulham suffering relegation back to the Championship.

Palace will be looking to bolster their squad this summer after another mid-table finish under Roy Hodgson.

Midfield has been an area for concern at Selhurst Park, and they may feel an initial short-term deal for Seri could be in their interest as they evaluate their options this summer.

The Ivory Coast international is still regarded as a top player, and perhaps surrounded by a more settled side such as Palace the former Nice man could flourish given another chance at Premier League football.

Crystal Palace luring this 27-year-old dynamo to Selhurst Park would add some steel and bite to their midfield

Crystal Palace Opinion: Why Crystal Palace should go all out in their pursuit of Jean Michael Seri

According to Football London, Crystal Palace have been credited with an interest in Fulham midfielder Jean Michael Seri, with reports claiming that the Eagles are looking at an initial loan deal with an option for a permanent transfer to bring the 27-year-old to Selhurst Park.

However, Football London understands that the Ivorian international favours a return back to the French top-flight with Monaco, whilst Turkish Galatasaray have also expressed their desire to secure his services.

Seri is unlikely to stick around at Craven Cottage in the Championship next season. Although his next destination is yet to be confirmed, the Eagles are believed to be making an effort to keep the 27-year-old in the Premier League.

Palace, however, face an uphill task convincing the Ivorian to switch bases from the west to the south of the capital following a disastrous debut season at Fulham in the Premier League last term.

Seri, who made his move to Fulham last summer from Nice as a part of the Cottagers spending spree, was expected to play a key role but the 27-year-old largely underwhelmed with his inconsistent run of form at Craven Cottage this past season.

Seri made 32 appearances for Fulham in the Premier League and contributed with just a goal and a couple of assists, as the Cottagers got relegated to the Championship after just a single season in the top-flight.

Although he showed glimpses of his brilliance in the earlier stages of the previous season, the Ivorian's impact gradually waned as the campaign wore on, and he finished the season with the label of a big-money flop hanging over his head.

The 27-year-old rose to prominence with Ligue 1 outfit Nice and established himself as one of the most promising box-to-box midfielders in Europe before his scintillating run of form in the French top-flight caught the eye of La Liga giants Barcelona.

Seri registered 12 goals and 26 assists in 123 appearances for Nice over the course of his three seasons at the club before snubbing the chance to join Barcelona in favour of a switch to the Premier League with Fulham last summer.

Seri is not the only high-profile player at Fulham to be linked with an exit this summer, with Ryan Sessegnon and Aleksandar Mitrovic also eyeing up moves elsewhere.

Although a move back to France would serve Seri well, the prospect of staying in the Premier League for another season could appeal to the 27-year-old.

To put things into perspective, Crystal Palace should leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of the Fulham star this summer and Seri's arrival would definitely be a strong statement of intent from the Eagles.

Despite his poor debut season at Fulham, the 27-year-old remains a very talented and useful midfielder and signing him on loan would not be much of a gamble for the Eagles.

Roy Hodgson is already pretty well-stocked in his options in the middle of the park. The likes of James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic were amongst the standout performers at Selhurst Park this past season, as the South Londoners finished 12th in the standings.

However, the imminent departures of Pape Souare, Jason Puncheon and Bakary Sako should prompt the manager to look for some fresh signings and Seri certainly fits the bill.

A strong, tenacious and hardworking central midfielder noted for his drive, determination, accurate passing and ball-distribution skills, Seri also contributes a lot with his creativity, vision and quality on the ball.

Cheikhou Kouyate continues to be a decent option in the ranks at Palace but one can get the feeling that Seri could add that bit of spice and unpredictability to the midfield.

Palace need to show more ambition in the transfer window if they are really serious about challenging for a top-ten finish in the Premier League next season.

While holding on to the likes of Zaha, Townsend and Wan-Bissaka continue to be a priority for the Eagles, they also need to consider bringing in some quality players in all areas of the pitch. Keeping that in mind, the acquisition of Seri could prove to be a shrewd piece of business for the Eagles.

3 repercussions for Fulham if they do sanction big player departure

With preparations well underway at Fulham for their imminent return to the Championship, manager Scott Parker will be hoping that his side can start afresh following an utterly dismal campaign in the Premier League.

Despite the 38-year-old needing to launch a complete overhaul of his squad between now and August, he may first have to deal with the prospect of one of his star players leaving this summer.

According to Sports Bild (as quoted by Bulinews), Aleksander Mitrovic is reportedly a target for Bayer Leverkusen who are looking to add more firepower ahead of next season.

Whilst Parker will be reluctant to let the Serbian leave, the opportunity to play in the Champions League for Die Werkself may be too big of a temptation for the forward to turn down and so it would not be at all surprising if he tries to force through a move.

Keeping this in mind, here are THREE repercussions that we think could impact Fulham if they do sanction Mitrovic's departure...

They fail to find to find a sufficient replacement

One of the Fulham's only shining lights last season, Mitrovic managed to fire in 11 goals for his side in the top-flight and therefore will be a tough man to replace if he does move on to pastures new.

Given the current state of the market, bringing in a player who has a proven pedigree of delivering the goods at Championship level may require the Cottagers to pay a premium price which owner Shahid Khan may not be willing to do.

If this turns out to be the case, Parker may have to settle for bringing in an individual who does not possess anywhere the levels of talent that Mitrovic has.

Parker ends up struggling in his first full campaign in charge

With the second-tier proving to be daunting for even the most experienced of managers, Parker will need all the help that he can get if he is to prevail in what will be his first ever full season in charge as a manager.

Yet without Mitrovic leading the line, the Fulham boss may end up struggling to keep the club afloat in one of the most competitive leagues in world football.

The club's hopes of promotion are over before they have even begun

Even though the Cottagers should have more than enough quality to stave off the threat of relegation during the upcoming campaign, their hopes of securing an immediate return to the Premier League could be over before they have even begun if they sell Mitrovic.

With the Serbian playing a huge role in helping the club achieve promotion in 2018 via the play-offs by finding the back of the net on 12 occasions in 20 games, his importance to Fulham's cause simply cannot be understated and therefore he would undoubtedly be a huge miss.

3 realistic Mitrovic replacements that Fulham should consider if he leaves

Having been relegated from the Premier League following an utterly disastrous 2018/19 campaign, Fulham now face an uphill task to keep Aleksandar Mitrovic at Craven Cottage this summer.

According to German outlet Sports Bild (as quoted by Bulinews), Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly interested in signing the Serbian forward with manager Peter Bosz looking to add to his attacking options ahead of next season.

One of Fulham's best only shining lights last season, Mitrovic managed to fire in 11 goals in the top-flight as he proved to be a real nuisance for defenders.

If the 24-year-old does end up leaving, it is imperative that Scott Parker lines up an adequate replacement for him as if he doesn't, the Cottagers could find it hard to compete in what is one of the toughest leagues in world football.

Keeping this in mind, here's THREE potential players who we think they should be targeting...

Dwight Gayle

Although he possesses a completely different skill-set in comparison to Mitrovic, Dwight Gayle clearly has the ability to fill the void left by the former Anderlecht ace and therefore Fulham simply have to considering swooping for him.

Outstanding whilst on loan at West Bromwich Albion in the Championship last season, the forward rattled in 24 goals as he helped the club reach the play-offs.

However, with the Baggies pulling out of the race to sign Gayle on a permanent deal from Newcastle United last month (via BBC Sport), it may be worth Parker trying to convince owner Shahid Khan to splash the cash on the forward.

Neal Maupay

One of the most gifted forwards in the second-tier, Neal Maupay enjoyed a stunning year at Griffin Park which saw him be directly involved in 37 goals in all competitions for Brentford.

With an excellent pedigree at Championship level, there is no doubting that the Frenchman would be the ideal replacement for Mitrovic yet the possibility of Fulham bringing him in could depend on how much money they receive from the sale of the ex-Newcastle man.

If they end up securing a huge cash influx this summer, it could be worth using a chunk of it on Maupay as he has the ability needed to take the Cottagers back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Britt Assombalonga

Another option for the Londoners if they want to go down the route of a proven scorer at this level is Assombalonga.

The Middlesbrough man would give the side a physical presence up top and can run the channels, whilst he is lethal in front of goal when given a chance.

He is seemingly available this summer and could be a realistic option.

https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/3-realistic-mitrovic-replacements-that-fulham-should-consider-if-he-leaves/

WhiteJC

Fulham's Mitrovic could be exactly what Sheffield United need

Sheffield United should consider Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic as their search for a new striker continues.

The Sheffield Star reports the Blades are in the market for a "proven goalscorer" this summer following their promotion to the Premier League.

Jay Rodriguez is the latest name to be linked with the South Yorkshire club. Apparently Rodriguez has a £5m release clause due to West Bromwich Albion's failure to get promoted.

However, that would be an initial £5m fee, with a further £5m due in add-ons over the following 12 months. This takes the overall cost to £10m.

Another Sheffield Star report says that Brentford forward Neal Maupay is also on the wish list. Yet Maupay is likely to cost upwards of £20m.

Oli McBurnie of Swansea City is another target – although it is rumoured he will instead reunite with manager Graham Potter at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Why Sheffield United should consider Mitrovic

Blades boss Chris Wilder appears to be targeting Championship attackers he believes can make the step up to the top flight. Rodriguez scored 22 league goals last season, although has previously featured in 141 Premier League games.

However, Maupay has never played in England's top tier and McBurnie has made just 16 appearances in the division.

Yet instead of looking to the second tier, perhaps Wilder should go for someone already proving themselves at the top.

Mitrovic scored 11 league goals for a, quite frankly, poor Fulham team in 2018/19. It was a little under a third of their overall tally of 34.

The Serbia international has 21 goals in 77 matches in the Premier League. That is far superior to Rodriguez's total of 33 in 141 games.

Not only that but at 24-years-old, Mitrovic is five years younger. He is also only two years older than Maupay and one year older than McBurnie – but with significantly more experience.

The one issue might be the price, with the Cottagers signing Mitrovic for £22m (BBC) last summer. They are likely to want to recoup most of that if they are to sell following relegation.

View: West Ham surely close to ditching Mitrovic chase

West Ham have surely lost ground in their efforts to sign Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic after the latest transfer report on his future.

According to the Daily Mirror's live transfer blog [Wednesday 21:14], Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen – who finished fourth in the German top flight last season – have also joined the race for the 48-time Serbia international.

What's more, the newspaper claims that the Cottagers want £30million for Mitrovic, and are braced to see him leave ahead of the club's return to the Championship after a dismal Premier League showing.

This latest report surely means that West Ham are nearing closer to pulling out of a deal to sign Mitrovic. The fact that he is going to cost £30million will definitely put them off as he is not worth that much.

Yes, the striker had a magnificent showing in the Championship when he was on loan at Fulham before they were promoted, but in the Premier League he only scored 11 goals.

At best, he is going to be backup to Marco Arnautovic – if the Austrian stays this summer – and for £3omillion, he would prove very expensive backup.

Moving onto Leverkusen being linked, it is a lot more likely that Mitrovic is going to get a lot more game time at the German side, and he would surely prefer to move to a club where he is going to be a regular starter instead of a backup player.

Alongside that, West Ham may even have another target in mind, with Celta Vigo's Maxi Gomez being linked with a move to the London Stadium in recent days [Gianluca di Marzio].

And at 22, he would prove a much better investment – being two years younger than the Serbian – which means West Ham will surely let their reported approach of Mitrovic slide and focus on Gomez instead.

Lots of talk about Mitro moving...yet no mention that he said he'd be fine staying to help the club come back up...very little mentioned about his 30 million Fulham asking price...or that Mitro knows he's guaranteed to start almost every game with Fulham this season and no other potential suiter that can afford 30 million is going to guarantee that.
