Leeds, Derby, Fulham and Aston Villa among clubs in striker transfer tussle

A host of Championship clubs are interested in signing Juventus' Stephy Mavididi on loan, according to TEAMtalk.

Those interested include Leeds, Fulham, Derby and Middlesbrough, after the 21-year-old impressed in Juventus' under 23 team last season. Premier league clubs Everton, Newcastle, Southampton, Burnley, and Aston Villa are also linked, so it could be a long race until one club gets him on board.

The 21-year-old even made an appearance for the Old Lady this season, perfect reward for his leap of faith, having joined from Arsenal last summer.

Mavididi has previously spent time on loan in the EFL, he made 10 appearances for Preston in 2016/17 and either side of that spell he played at Charlton, whom he helped reach the 2016/17 League One play-offs.

The Derby-born striker is still somewhat of an unknown quantity, as he has little experience of professional football.

His reputation suggests he has the ability and potential to be a quality player at the highest level, and a loan move could help him achieve that.

Given where he was born, it could put Derby in the frame to be favourites to sign him, and the player certainly has a tough decision on his hands with so many clubs interested.

The Verdict

Next year is a big one for Mavididi.

He has proved himself in youth football so now is the time to go out on loan, get regular game time and show what he could offer Juventus long-term.

The Championship would suit him very well, particularly Derby or Fulham, where he will be playing under a manager who likes to give opportunities to young players. Scoring goals in the Championship is not easy and if he accomplishes that it will do him the world of good.

Right now the Premier League could be a step too far and if he doesn't impress straight away his chances could be limited, and that is the last thing he needs.

Mitro's Milestone

Aleksandar Mitrović reached the milestone of 25 international goals with a brace for Serbia on Monday night.

They welcomed Lithuania to Belgrade for their European Championship Group B Qualifier, and subsequently claimed their first win of the campaign in comfortable fashion; dispatching their opponents 4-1.

Mitrović opened the scoring with a neat turn and shot on the edge of the box with 20 minutes played, doubling his and Serbia's tally with a tap-in quarter of an hour later – a goal that represented his 25th for his country.

Real Madrid's Luka Jovic curled in a stunning third seconds later, although Lithuania did pull one back from the spot after Mitrović was penalised for handball.

The Fulham striker almost claimed his hat-trick late on only to be denied by the woodwork, but Serbia did get a fourth in stoppage time through Adem Ljajić.

The win sees Serbia sit third in Group B, six points off leaders Ukraine but with a game in hand.

Elsewhere, Stefan Johansen came off the bench in the 72nd minute to help Norway to victory in the Faroe Islands.

They were already one up courtesy of Bjørn Johnsen's effort, and the AZ Alkmaar forward made sure of the points on 83 minutes, leaving Norway fourth in Group F with five points from four matches.

Report: Problem arises in Spurs' quest to sign Ryan Sessegnon

Despite his impressive 2017/18 campaign with Fulham, Ryan Sessegnon remained at Craven Cottage for Fulham's first season in the Premier League since 2013/14.

Sessegnon caught the eye of many in the Championship and Spurs were amongst the earliest pursuers. Last February it was reported that Spurs were ready to table a £35 million offer for the English youngster (The Telegraph).

Now, over a year later, Tottenham have reportedly reignited their interest in Fulham's Sessegnon following their relegation from the top-flight.

Earlier on Sessegnon had remained coy on his future stating that: "I'm still a Fulham player, contracted until 2020."

"So I'm still a Fulham player and in terms of that, that's all I can say at the moment." (Daily Star).

However, the renewed interest in Sessegnon comes after it was reported that he would not renew his contract with Fulham when it runs out next year (Guardian).

Promising news for Spurs fans now suggests that Sessegnon is likely to remain in London even after he leaves Fulham. According to the Daily Star, Sessegnon has snubbed the chance to move to Manchester United, with Tottenham his preferred destination.

However, the stumbling block now seems to be the price tag. With Fulham wanting up to £45 million for the player, Tottenham are reportedly only willing to pay £22 million for the 19-year-old.

Although it seemed Spurs were willing to pay more for the youngster last year, now, with only a year left on Sessegnon's contract, Spurs seem to be haggling over the price.

Spurs Web Opinion

Sessegnon looks an ideal fit for Spurs. He's young, hungry and a perfect option at left-wing back / left wing.

After his impressive season in the Championship for Fulham he clearly has bags of potential. Being only 19 years of age, Sessegnon would obviously have a lot to learn at the top-level but Pochettino would be the perfect man to help him mature and develop as a player.

We continue our look at the Potters 2019/10 opposition, this time focusing on recently relegated Fulham...

Full name: Fulham Football Club

Nickname: The Cottagers

Founded: 1879 (140 years ago)

2018/19 finish: Premier League 19th

Manager: Following on from a difficult season in the Premier League, Scott Parker is looking to spearhead Fulham back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The former midfielder will fully understand the task at hand with expectation high following an influx of signings during the club's single season stay in the top-flight, but spirits are high in west London following an improved end to the previous campaign with three successive wins in the club's run-in.

Star man: With plenty of clubs circling the skies above Craven Cottage following last season's relegation, Aleksandor Mitrovic is a man in demand. With 11 goals to his name and his impressive tally from Fulham's last spell in the Championship, the Serbian international will be a terrifying prospect for any second tier defence to come up against.

2019/20 Promotion odds: 11/4 (latest odds at the time of writing courtesy of bet365)

Distance from the bet365 Stadium: 166 miles (3 hours)

Nearest train station: Putney Station is the nearest railway station to Craven Cottage located at 1.2 miles from the stadium. Putney Station is accessible from London Euston. The nearest London underground station is Putney Bridge, which is just 0.7 miles from the home of the Cottagers.

Head to head: The two sides have locked horns 77 times in total. The Potters have emerged victorious 30 times, with Fulham having won two more at 32. The remaining 15 encounters have all ended with a share of the points.

Historic meeting: Stoke City 3-2 Fulham (5 January, 2010): On a bitterly cold evening in ST4, it was Fulham who were sent home with the shivers following a scintillating first half showing from City. Tuncay opened the scoring before a quick fire double from Abdoulaye Faye and Mamady Sidibe was enough for the points. Second half strikes from Damien Duff and Clint Dempsey reduced the deficit to just a single goal, but the Potters held on for the points.

Did you know: Fulham competed in the first Europa League final following the competition's relaunch from the UEFA Cup. Defeating the likes of Juventus and Wolfsburg on the way to the showpiece, the final step proved too much for Roy Hodgson's side as they suffered a 2-1 defeat after extra-time.

Crystal Palace suffer Jean-Michael Seri transfer blow as Fulham star makes plans for next season

The Ivorian midfielder endured a disappointing season in the Premier League

Crystal Palace are attempting to convince Jean-Michael Seri to move across London with the Ivorian midfielder set to depart Fulham after a disappointing debut season in the Premier League.

football.london understands Palace are preparing a loan deal with the option for a permanent transfer to bring in Seri, who told Fulham in March that he wants to leave the club.

However the Eagles will face an uphill task convincing Seri to remain in the Premier League as it is understood he favours a return back to the continent, with Ligue 1 his most likely destination. Galatasaray are also knock to hold an interest in his services.

Monaco are among the French sides eager to bring Seri back to the country where he enjoyed his best form, though.

Over three seasons at Nice the 27-year-old established himself as one of the outstanding midfielders in Europe, found himself labelled Xavi's heir by the man himself and came within a matter of hours of joining Barcelona.

Instead he moved to Craven Cottage a year later, the £20million marquee signing in an ambitious summer of spending by Fulham that would ultimately prove to be the club's undoing as three successive managers struggled to build a cohesive side from a playing squad that saw 15 senior players arrive and the sidelining of several of those who had won promotion.

Seri is unlikely to be the only high-profile player to leave the club this summer. Ryan Sessegnon is expected to depart with Tottenham among the leading contenders for his signature whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic is also likely to draw interest from Premier League suitors.

Fulham do however hope to retain Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Alfie Mawson and have picked up options in the contracts of Denis Odoi, Floyd Ayite, Neeskens Kebano and Stefan Johansen. Captain Tom Cairney also agreed to new terms last month.

'Fulham could do better' – Latest transfer link at Craven Cottage: Opinion

Fulham have emerged as one of a number of Premier League and Championship sides who keen on the signing of 21-year-old striker Stephy Mavididi, according to Teamtalk.

Mavididi, who impressed enough for Juventus' youth side this season to earn himself a fist team debut for the Italian champions, came through the youth ranks at Arsenal, and spent time on loan at Charlton and Preston before moving to Italy last summer.

It is now thought that up to nine clubs, including Championship quartet Fulham, Middlesbrough Leeds and Derby are all interested in a loan move for Mavididi in the summer transfer window.

The former England youth international scored six times in 32 League appearances for Juve's Under 23 side – who play in the third tier of Italian football – last season.

So would Mavididi be a good signing for Fulham?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their opinions.

Ben Lang

'I think this would be a great signing for Fulham.

'Mavididi's youth and energy provide a fresh lease of life to a lethargic Fulham side following their relegation from the top-flight.

'The West Londoners will be on the look-out for a striker, and Mavididi's excellent pace and strength means he could an effective low-cost option.'

Toby Wilding

"This could be a smart move from Fulham.

"They aren't exactly stacked with attacking options as it is, and they could be in even greater need to strengthen in that area of the pitch if Aleksandar Mitrovic moves on as well.

"Mavididi is a young and hungry striker who could well provide some fresh impetus next season, and he will surely want to show Juventus that he is ready for a place in their first team this time next year."

Louie Chandler

"I think Fulham could do better.

"That is not to say that Mavididi is a bad player. I have not seen too much of him, after all.

"But Fulham are in a position where they could surely afford to bring in an established Championship striker such as Dwight Gayle or Britt Assombalonga instead."

Transfer Focus: Crystal Palace eyeing loan signing of Jean Michael Seri of Fulham

According to a Tweet from The Guardian's Deputy News Editor Ed Aarons, Roy Hodgson's Crystal Palace are eyeing the loan signing of Jean Michael Seri of Fulham.

What's the word, then?

With the Cottagers unable to maintain their Premier League status in 2018/2019, Seri will be wanting to stay at the highest level with Monaco of Ligue 1 also interested in securing his signature.

However, if the Eagles want to be the club to keep the central midfielder in the division, then it may have to be on loan as there's every chance Scott Parker's men could be back in the top flight themselves in a year's time.

Seri, a 23-time international with the Ivory Coast, arrived at Craven Cottage last summer as part of the team's ill-fated pre-season spend from Nice.

Milivojevic's perfect long-term partner

It's not hard to see the potential of the bright Seri being Luka Milivojevic's long-term partner at Selhurst Park if they manage to rescue him from the Championship.

It seems like the Serbian is the only constant in the midfield of Hodgson's men at the moment with everyone from Cheikhou Kouyate to Max Meyer partnering him at one point during 2018/2019.

Seri's first campaign in English football didn't exactly go to plan, and he largely failed to make the impact that would have been expected from him.

However, the midfielder has shown his class for Nice previously and is more agile than Milivojevic, meaning his overall game would complement his nicely as he would be able to break forward while the Serbian plays a holding role.

The fact that the Eagles would get to try the African on for size before committing to a permanent deal first is excellent. That way, if things don't quite work out for Seri in south London Palace have lost nothing.

Fulham making a move for this Chelsea graduate would help them make an immediate return to the PL

Fulham opinion: Should the Cottagers make a move for Todd Kane?

According to reports from the Derby Telegraph, Fulham have entered the race for Chelsea graduate Todd Kane with the Blues reportedly ready to sell. The 25-year-old defender has been told that he has no future at the club and should start looking for a way out immediately.

Derby County, Sheffield United and even Aston Villa are all very interested in Kane and given his performances on loan, that should be no surprise.

While he is contracted to Chelsea, Kane has never played for the club's senior side, although he does have 50 appearances for the U-23 side. It shows just how much the Blues rate him, but his loan spells across the world have been a boon.

Kane has played not just in the Championship but also in the Eredivisie for FC Groningen over the last few years. This has seen him amass just over 200 career appearances, including nearly a 100 in the Championship alone. You cannot buy that kind of experience and for a club like Fulham, it's a move that would do them a lot of good.

The Cottagers got relegated after a long season in the Premier League, proving that spending money does not always help. It serves as a warning for the newly promoted sides in Aston Villa, Norwich City and Sheffield United. Fulham can't be looking backwards.

That means creating a life without a few stars that they do have at their disposal right now. However, even if they do manage to keep their back-line, the Cottagers still have to add a new right-back.

While Cyrus Christie has done well, the 26-year-old cannot be the club's only option and that is exactly where Todd Kane enters the fray. The 25-year-old is a right-back by trade but has been used all over the field over the course of his career.

He's even spent time as a left-back, left wing-back, defensive midfielder and a right wing-back. That shows how versatile the Chelsea man is and why a move would be perfect for Fulham.

They need someone like Kane in their lineup and his versatility to play across a number of positions will only serve to help the club on their way back up.

Conclusion

Fulham need reinforcements if they want to survive the Championship once again. It took the Cottagers a long time to get back into the Premier League and they failed to keep their place amongst the top-tier sides.

But, while only adding Todd Kane will not help them get back there, the 25-year-old will certainly be another option to have.
