Exclusive: Fulham rival West Brom in chase to sign Chelsea midfielder

EXCLUSIVE By Pete O'Rourke

Fulham are ready to rival West Brom in the race for Chelsea midfielder Trevor Chalobah, Football Insider can reveal.

The Cottagers are closely monitoring the versatile teenager, 19, as they look to bring in some they regard as a quality player capable of making a big impact in their bid for instant promotion.

A Fulham source has told Football Insider the club are ready to make a move to land Chalobah on a season-long loan and beat Championship rivals West Brom to his signature.

Chelsea are ready to loan out Chalobah against next season after his impressive campaign at Ipswich Town, where he was a regular starter in their midfield.

The Tractor Boys were relegated to League One, but Chalobah made a big impression, starting 35 Championship matches among 44 appearances, and enhanced his reputation.

Like older brother Nathaniel, Chalobah is a product of the Chelsea academy and has accumulated extensive experience for their Under-23s and Under-18s.

The 6ft 3in midfielder, who can also played in central defence, has also represented England at multiple youth levels including the Under-20s and is tipped to follow his sibling into the senior side.

West Brom and Fulham are both convinced that Chalobah can be a major playing asset for them next season as they look to secure promotion to the top flight.

Fulham eye Chalobah loan deal

Fulham are lining up a loan move for the talented Chelsea teenager Trevoh Chalobah.

The nineteen year-old, who can play either in central defence or midfield, spent the 2018/2019 season with Ipswich, scoring twice in 43 appearances, in an ultimately disappointing campaign for the Portman Road club, who were relegated. Chalobah, the younger brother of Watford midfielder Nathaniel, has been linked with a loan move to West Brom already this summer and is likely to be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis again to further his development.

Fulham successfully utilised the loan market during their last spell in the Championship and twice took Tomas Kalas and Lucas Piazon on loan from their local rivals. Chalobah, who was part of the England under-19 squad that won the European Championships in 2017 alongside Ryan Sessegnon, starred in the Chelsea youth set-up but has struggled for an opportunity at senior level, despite being named on the bench for the FA Cup final win over Manchester United in 2018 by Antonio Conte.

Fulham to rival West Brom in race for Chalobah

Fulham look set to rival West Brom in the race for Chelsea youngster Trevoh Chalobah this summer, as both sides target a return to the Premier League next season.

The 19-year-old enjoyed an impressive loan spell with Ipswich Town in the Championship last season despite their relegation down to League One, and there is said to be sufficient interest in the teenager.

According to the Birmingham Mail via Football Insider, West Brom will face competition from Chelsea's West London rivals Fulham in the race for Chalobah.

The Cottagers are targeting an immediate return to the Premier League next season, while the Baggies are also looking to return to the top flight, and both believe the versatile Chalobah could be an important part of their respective pushes for promotion.

The 19-year-old made 43 league appearances for Ipswich last season playing in central defence or central midfield, scoring twice and assisting once.

Newcastle need Bryan to support Dummett

Newcastle could be on the hunt for a left-back this summer due to a lack of depth in defence. The Magpies have no natural replacement for Paul Dummett in case of injury as Ciaran Clark, Javier Manquillo, Matt Ritchie and Jack Colback are makeshift options.

Aa result, Newcastle should consider a move for Joe Bryan – a player they have been linked with this summer. The £30k-per-week defender only joined Fulham from Bristol City in August 2018, but he could be on the move less than a year after his arrival.

With Fulham recently suffering relegation to the Championship, Bryan would surely jump at the chance to return to the top-flight if the situation presented itself. He made 28 Premier League appearances last season, making one assist, creating 24 chances and making 14 successful dribbles (52%).

Bryan won 31 aerial duels (46%), blocked 46 shots/crosses/passes, made 70 clearances, averaged 34 passes-per-game with 75% accuracy, whipped in 115 crosses with 19% accuracy and averaged a tackle (61) or interception (31) every 26 minutes.

Dummett is likely to remain first-choice at left-back for Newcastle next season, but Bryan could run him close. At the very least, the 25-year-old could be called upon for cup games and in case of injury to Dummett. Whether Newcastle return for the defender this summer remains to be seen, however.
