Fulham keen to receive a Spurs player in exchange for Sessegnon

This article is part of Football FanCast's Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news...

Fulham are keen to receive a Tottenham Hotspur player in exchange for Ryan Sessegnon, per the London Evening Standard.

What's the word?

The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs in this transfer window.

Indeed, reports claim that he has his heart set on a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as he is keen to work under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

However, a deal has not yet been agreed for the teenager, with Spurs so far completing two transfers: Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke.

And the Standard now claims that is due to Fulham's desire to take a player from the north London club, though no specific name is mentioned.

However, the newspaper reports that Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, Marcus Edwards and Joshua Onomah are all for sale.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react to Ryan Sessegnon transfer update

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be interested in signing Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur fans think that Fulham have just made it 'easy' to get Ryan Sessegnon by offering up a swap deal.

The London Evening Standard suggest that Fulham want to take one of Tottenham's players in exchange for Sessegnon.

The 19-year-old is one of Tottenham's key targets this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino's side tracking the youngster for some time.

And Spurs fans have suggested that getting Sessegnon should be simple now.

Tottenham have a lot of fringe players that they want to offload this summer, and they have suggested offering Fulham Georges Kevin N'Koudou or Vincent Janssen.

Janssen and N'Koudou have both been left off Tottenham's pre season tour to arrange moves elsewhere.

The pair seem to have no future at Tottenham, and are expected to leave White Hart Lane this summer.

Getting Sessegnon would be a big boost for Spurs now, as it seems as if Danny Rose will be leaving, after he also wasn't included in Spurs' pre-season squad.

It is thought that if Spurs cannot come to a trade agreement for Sessegnon, then Fulham will charge £40 million for their prized prospect (Daily Mail).

Report: Tottenham could sign Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon when he returns from summer holiday

Fulham ace Ryan Sessegnon could join Tottenham when he returns from his summer holiday, according to a report from Football.London.

Spurs have already been heavily active in this summer's transfer market, having signed Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke, and sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

Danny Rose has also been linked with an exit from Tottenham, with the club's official website releasing a statement that he is free to explore options with other clubs.

And if the England international does in fact leave north London, Sessegnon could be the ideal replacement.

The 19-year-old can operate as both a left-back and a left-winger, and Football.London reported earlier this summer that Pochettino would expect the Fulham starlet to play in both positions, if he does in fact join Spurs.

According to the Daily Mail, Sessegnon could be available for £35 million this summer, and in today's day and age, that would represent excellent value for money for Tottenham.

The Fulham ace seems to have everything, and will surely go on to become a real star within the game.

And Tottenham fans will surely be delighted if Pochettino does manage to bring him to White Hart Lane this summer.

Nicol urges Liverpool to sign Sessegnon

ESPN pundit Steve Nicol has urged Liverpool to sign Ryan Sessegnon this summer, claiming that he could be a good back-up option for Andrew Robertson at left-back.

Sessegnon, 19, is in the final year of his contract at Fulham but according to the Mirror, the Championship club value the England Under-21 international at £40million amid interest from Tottenham.

Liverpool have also been linked with Sessegnon this summer [Express], and ex-Reds player Nicol reckons that the teenager should be someone who is brought in by Jurgen Klopp as a replacement for Alberto Moreno after the Spanish left-back left the club last month when his contract expired.

"Still a teenager," Nicol said, as quoted by the Express.

"Well he [wouldn't be] starting, he's pushing.

"He's there to push and he's there to make the eleven that start better.

"He's still a teenager, still has a lot to learn.

"But, what, in two or three years time, he's pushing Robertson or anybody else down that left-hand side."

OPINION

Liverpool should try to sign Sessegnon – but not as a replacement left-back. Sessegnon started off as a left-back or a wing-back for Fulham but over the last year or so he has developed into a left-sided winger due to how much better he is at his attacking duties than defensive. It would be simple to compare Sessegnon's transformation to Gareth Bale's at Tottenham, and would people still be calling Bale a left-back now? Sessegnon made 38 appearances in all competitions for Fulham last season and struggled as the Cottagers were relegated from the Premier League. Just eight of those appearances came at left-back as the England youth international mainly featured on the left or right-hand side of Fulham's attack. Liverpool need to replace Moreno, but not with Sessegnon. Sessegnon is an attacker and one who could be a good back-up option behind Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. He's young and could develop under the wings of those two European champions.

Loan Deal For Seri

The Club can confirm that Jean Michaël Seri has joined Galatasaray on a season long loan deal.

The Turkish outfit also holds an option to make the transfer permanent.

We would like to wish Mika the best of luck during his time in Istanbul.

The failure of Jean-Michael Seri

A year ago this week, Fulham pulled off the club's biggest ever signing. Jean-Michael Seri, a player who was once linked with Barcelona and dubbed the next Xavi, signed for the Whites. More than just a brilliant centre-midfield acquisition, it instead signified something more — a broader statement of intent that Fulham would not only survive in the Premier League, but thrive.

A year later, Seri has moved to Galatasaray on loan. Fulham finished second-bottom. And supporters are left wondering how the Ivorian turned from saviour to the most disappointing signing in recent memory.

By all accounts, Seri seemed perfect for Fulham. A diminutive, but combative midfielder, he could dish out superb passes at an astoundingly accurate rate, as well as provide some tough tackling. Combined with passmaster Tom Cairney in Slavisa Jokanovic's free-flowing side, Seri appeared set to flourish in SW6. He didn't.

At the end of the day, Seri was so beneath everyone's expectations that fans began turning against him en masse. When he needed to be precise, his passes were errant. When he needed to be assertive, his tackles often ended up in bookings rather than takeaways. When required to track back, he turned his jogs into leisurely strides and abdicated defensive responsibility.

Seri was terrible, and no amount of apologising could make up for the signing that destroyed Fulham hearts.

It didn't start this way. His debut against Palace was lively enough and Seri even notably dispossessed the much larger Christian Benteke with aplomb. The best point came in Jokanovic's only league win, a 4-2 victory over Burnley, started off by a goal-of-the-season contender by Seri. The Ivorian peeled away, arms aloft, a smile of glee. Little did we know that he would never hit such heights again.

There was a cute, scooped assist for Andre Schurrle away at Brighton, but cracks were quickly beginning to show. An inexplicable pass gifted Manchester City their opening goal at the Etihad.

With Fulham quickly entering freefall, Seri went missing. Central midfielders are meant to boss possession and constantly dictate the tempo in the middle of the park. When goings get tough, you count on your centre-mid to get the ball moving, calm down the team, and facilitate attacks. But watch most of Fulham's matches last season, and you would be hard pressed to identify Seri's contributions. Sure, there were notable mistakes and key giveaways, but often, the most damning indictment of Seri's performance was that you hardly noticed he was on the pitch.

The speed of the Premier League passed him by. The strength needed to assert yourself overwhelmed him. And the worst thing was he didn't want to be there.

More than representing a failed individual signing, Jean-Michael Seri encapsulated the Premier League mercenary, a player who was good in theory but truly saw themselves as above the level of Fulham Football Club.

A look back at the 2018 transfer saga that brought Seri to SW6 is instructive, as until the last minute, it appeared certain either Arsenal or Chelsea would snap up the Ivorian. For whatever reason, Fulham pounced, but it's fair to say Seri thought himself a player of a higher quality, worthy of European football and not a relegation dogfight.

And when results start to slip, true fighters rise to the occasion. And from the off, Seri was never going to fight for Fulham. Towards the end of the season during Scott Parker's late resurgence, it's illuminating that Seri barely played.

Fulham played their best football of the season and turned their its most spirited performances with Seri looking on from the bench. There was a reason for that.

Was Seri the only player who was lazy, underperforming, and weak during the 18/19 campaign? Of course not. But what separated him from the rest of the abject bunch was the insanely high hopes the fanbase had for Seri in the summer. His failures were made all the more deflating by his glowing reputation.

Now, the midfielder will link back up with Ryan Babel in Turkey. He'll be remembered as a disappointment beyond belief at Fulham. A player of great talent who consistently failed at every task in SW6, Jean-Michael Seri won't be missed. But he certainly will not be forgotten anytime soon, a potent reminder of a season horribly lost to incompetence.

Sorry but he has never been our biggest transfer signing either by name or by fee. There's been a whole host of bigger names who have played to varying standards when here and I believe Seri cost nearer to the 20£million mark, where Anguissa cost the club closer to 30 million.

In no way does seri's one standout season at Nice and the hype that created and a comparison from iniesta come anywhere close to players who have actually performed at the top for years.

George best? Bobby Robson? Johnny Haynes?, dimitar berbatov?.. even karagounis would be considered a bigger name for his time and prominent clubs in different countries like inter Milan and his success for Greece.

Let's not be whatever the kids are collectively called these days by overusing words to water their meaning down.

Seri failed at the club and has moved to galatasary a top club in a league inferior to the Championship in terms of genuine quality and even spending power.

Harry Kane would be good but not sure about the ones named, never heard of any of them, have they had any first team time. As usual Spurs want the cream and only prepared to pay peanuts or give you some no hopers.

I was thinking we'd want a quality defender that might not be part of their plans going forward, like Danny Rose, probably of equal value (40m lets say). That might be off, and he might see himself as too good for us. And then there are wages.

I like the idea though. You never know.
