Football transfer rumours: Tottenham to sign another Sessegnon?

Today's fluff is keeping it in the family

Is Fulham defender Steven Sessegnon set to join his older brother, Ryan, at Tottenham Hotspur? Photograph: Jed Leicester/BPI/Shutterstock

At times like this, when the nation is surrounded by uncharted waters at every turn and everything you thought you knew is tossed up into the air, one obvious question springs to mind: has Christian Eriksen got his mitts on a copy of Football Manager yet?

Manchester United certainly hope so, because they'd happily take the great Dane off Spurs' hands this winter and give his turbulent August all the relevance of a long-deleted save. United need a creative spark; Eriksen thinks he needs to leave Spurs; there's scant chance Daniel Levy would want to let him leave for free next season. It could just work out: now, any chance he could bring Tonton Zola Moukoko along with him?

Not that Tottenham fans should get too glum – it could be happy families at the Lane very soon. Happy Sessegnon families, to be precise: having already signed Ryan this summer they're going back to Fulham for his younger brother, the highly-rated defender Steven Sessegnon, and hope their persistence gets their man in the winter.

"Seen the rumour that I'm being lined up to join my old manager, Maurizio Sarri, at Juventus next summer once my Chelsea contract is up, and that we might start negotiations in January?" Don't be silly Willian, it was really nothing.

It's thin gruel for those clubs seeking a shot of inspiration now that the transfer window has slammed shut, but what about signing one of the many eager, talented free agents who are just desperate to show their worth? There are some big names still out there and few more so than Hatem Ben Arfa, who is flying solo after leaving Rennes. Fiorentina, Fenerbahce and – surprise surprise – West Ham are all credited with showing interest but there's a small problem. "No challenge that has been proposed to me has excited me," he apparently bemoaned on Instagram. "It's like with a woman, if she does not excite you, let it go." People in glass houses: it's fair to say a number of Ben Arfa's footballing partners have found the end product doesn't exactly get the fires raging.

Those in need of more substance can console themselves that, fortunately, the managerial merry-go-round still carries on a-turning. It might just alight at the gates of Hillsborough for the Lincoln manager Danny Cowley and his brother, Nicky. The Sincil Bank miracle workers didn't much like what they heard when Huddersfield came sniffing around but Sheffield Wednesday might be a different proposition: talks are ongoing and Lincoln, second in League One, could yet lose their star turns. Puts it all in perspective really.

Tottenham targeting another Fulham full-back

Tottenham are hoping to sign Steve Sessegnon from Fulham – which would see him link up with his brother Ryan Sessegnon.

Mauricio Pochettino's men made an optimistic bid to sign the 19-year-old as part of the deal that saw Ryan move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this summer, but their £3m bid was predictably rejected by the Championship outfit.

But according to The Sun, Tottenham are set to return with an improved offer for the teenager, who has only made eight senior appearances for the Whites, but has started and impressed in their last four Championship outings, including their 2-1 victory a Huddersfield Town recently, a game that was live on Sky Sports.

Sessegnon's excellent form led to him earning his first call-up to the England Under-21 squad, where he'll be hoping to make his debut against either Turkey or Kosovo in the next seven days.

The full-back, who can play a number of different positions, is contracted to Fulham until the summer of 2022, but with Spurs in desperate need of right-backs, they're hoping to sort a deal for the teenager.

Fulham's decision to permanently offload this 14-goal star is absolutely justified and here is why

Fulham's decision to offload Floyd Ayite permanently looks justified

As confirmed via Fulham's official website, winger Floyd Ayite has departed Fulham to join Turkish top-flight side Gençlerbirliği S.K, thus bringing the curtains down on his three-year spell at Craven Cottage.

Ayite made his move to West London back in the summer of 2016 after scoring 17 goals in 67 appearances for French Ligue 1 side Bastia and his stint at Craven Cottage proved to be quite a fruitful one as well.

A tally of 14 goals and 11 assists in 84 appearances across all competitions might not flatter that much on paper but Ayite was one of the architects of the club's promotion-winning campaign in the Championship in 2017-18.

However, the Togo international found himself on the fringes of the first-team in the Premier League last season and largely appeared as a substitute, scoring once in 16 appearances as the Cottagers failed to beat the drop and went straight back down to the Championship.

Despite Fulham making a promising start to their life back in the second-tier, Ayite struggled to mount a significant challenge for a regular starting role under Scott Parker, with the manager favouring loan signings Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro to complement Aleksandar Mitrovic up top.

The 30-year-old's solitary appearance in the Championship this term came as a late substitute in Fulham's 1-0 defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Barnsley in the opening game of the season.

The versatile winger was omitted from the matchday squads more often than not in the opening month of the season before a move to get him off the books permanently was finalised on deadline day, with the 30-year-old completing a switch to Turkey.

To put things into perspective, it was pretty evident from Parker's team selection thus far in the Championship that Floyd Ayite was way down the pecking order at Craven Cottage and Fulham's decision to part ways with the Togo international shouldn't come as a big shock to the fans.

Indeed, Ayite was one of the mainstays of Fulham's attack when he first arrived at the club but things weren't quite the same for him in West London over the past twelve months or so.

However, the writing was on the wall for the veteran after he failed to make much of an impression in the Premier League, despite all his years of experience in Ligue 1, and the Cottagers' decision to move him on should allow them to focus on the development of some of the youngster players at the club.

Furthermore, with Knockaert and Cavaleiro making a good start to the season and Parker preferring the likes of Aboubakar Kamara and Bobby Reid as substitutes, Ayite's chances of playing regualarly looked very slim, to be honest.

All in all, the 30-year-old's time at Craven Cottage was not the worst but certainly not one that the fans would like to remember for too long in the years to come.

'We should be asking for £50million' – Fulham fan pundit slaps hefty price-tag on Tottenham target

This article is part of Football League World's 'Regular Punter' series, where we gather original opinions from select, passionate fans of the clubs concerned on matters surrounding their team and share them with a wider audience...

Football League World's Fulham fan pundit David Gadd has slapped a huge price-tag on reported Tottenham Hotspur target Steven Sessegnon.

After signing his brother in the summer, The Sun have now reported that they are ready to move for the Whites right-back, but Gadd is determined to see his side stand firm.

"We should be asking for least £50million," the regular punter told Football League World.

"Based on his potential and how valuable he is to the team at the moment, I think it should be no less than that figure.

"Steven was supposed to be better than Ryan, if it wasn't for a big knee injury, and the rumours were [Spurs] wanted the pair together in the summer but Fulham didn't want to sell Steven.

"So, if they really want him, Daniel Levy better get that chequebook out."

Spurs splashed around £24million on Ryan Sessegnon in the summer following Fulham's relegation to the Premier League but this season has seen Steven come to the fore at Craven Cottage, having graduated through the club's youth system.

The 19-year-old has started the club's last four Championship matches and is clearly a firm part of Scott Parker's plans for the forseeable future.

The Whites currently sit in sixth place with six matches played in the second-tier season as they look to make an immediate return to the top-flight.

'It would be a disaster for the team' – Fulham fan pundit gives verdict on emerging transfer rumours

This article is part of Football League World's 'Regular Punter' series, where we gather original opinions from select, passionate fans of the clubs concerned on matters surrounding their team and share them with a wider audience...

Football League World's Fulham fan pundit David Gadd has said that selling right-back Steven Sessegnon to Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window would be a big mistake.

The Sun reported on Wednesday that the North London club were still looking to bring in the 19-year-old, and Ryan Sessegnon's twin brother, after failing in an attempt to bring the pair in together during the summer.

"He is a key player under Scott Parker now and if we lost him it would be a disaster for the team," the regular punter told Football League World.

"Even at the age of 19 he is and will be our best right-back for years to come. If we did sell him we would go back to square one because the other players in the position are not good enough so he is vital to this squad if we are to achieve something this year.

"However, every player does have their price so if we got a figure that smashed our valuation of him then maybe we can consider.

"But at this moment in time, there is no need to sell him. I think it would send the wrong message to clubs if we did sell him, that we let go of our prized assets easily."

Spurs splashed around £24million on Ryan during the summer following Fulham's relegation to the Premier League but this season has seen Steven come to the fore at Craven Cottage, having graduated through the club's youth system with his twin.

The 19-year-old has started the club's last four Championship matches and is clearly a firm part of Scott Parker's plans for the foreseeable future.

The Whites currently sit in sixth place with six matches played in the second-tier season, as they look to make an immediate return to the top-flight.

2 pros and 2 cons to Fulham overseeing high-profile departure

Having already completed the £25m signing of Ryan Sessegnon in the summer, Tottenham Hotspur could be set to launch another transfer raid on Fulham in the next few months.

According to reports from The Sun, Mauricio Pochettino's side are interested in signing Ryan's twin brother Steven, who has established himself as an important player for the Cottagers in the early stages of the season.

The 19-year-old made only three only appearances for the London club last term, but under Scott Parker, the versatile defender has started four out of Fulham's opening six games in the Championship.

Sessegnon, who can operate as a full-back, central defender or midfielder, still has three years left on his current deal at Craven Cottage, having put pen to paper on a new long-term contract back in 2018.

But having already been the subject of a £3m offer from Spurs as part of the deal that saw Ryan move to North London, we take a look at two pros and two cons to Fulham letting Steven leave...

Pro 1: Financial gain

With three years left on his contract at Craven Cottage, Fulham don't have any reason to sell Sessegnon to Spurs, and the latter would have to pay a hefty fee if they were to secure his signature.

Spurs will know that Fulham aren't pushovers when it comes to negotiating – they tracked Ryan Sessegnon throughout the summer, but the Cottagers drove a hard bargain and forced Spurs into paying much more than they originally wanted to.

If Steven were to leave, though, then the funds could be beneficial for Fulham in the January transfer window, and it could allow Parker to bolster his squad in their quest for promotion.

Fulham fans won't want the club to sell him, but every player has a price, and these funds could be very useful indeed.

Pro 2: Keeps morale high

Sessegnon clearly has an emotional attachment to Fulham – he and his brother came through the ranks at the London club and he's finally been given his chance to shine in the first-team after real perseverance and determination

But with Ryan recently completing a move to Spurs, you wouldn't blame Steven for wanting to do the same – a chance to play in the Premier League for a massive club like Tottenham, alongside his brother, could really turn his head.

There would be no point risking having an unhappy player in the dressing room.

Con 1: Potential fan uproar

Ryan Sessegnon's departure really divided opinions amongst the Fulham faithful in the summer – on one hand, the move was inevitable giving Spurs' pulling power and Fulham's relegation from the top-flight.

But on the other hand, some fans were unhappy at the club selling one of their own despite receiving a huge amount of money for his signature.

Fans have an affinity with players who come through the youth ranks, and selling Steven to Spurs just months after Ryan's sale could cause real fan uproar.

Con 2: Lack of depth

Sessegnon has been a really important player for Fulham this season, battling it out for a place at right-back with Cyrus Christie and Denis Odoi.

But one of the best things about Sessegnon is his ability to play in numerous positions, and if Fulham let go of him, they would be losing a really useful player.

With Odoi approaching 32 years of age, Fulham need young, upcoming competition for Christie in defence, and that is exactly what Sessegnon brings to the table.

Promotion on the cards? – This jet-heeled 25-year-old is already proving to a top signing for Fulham

Why Ivan Cavaleiro can single-handedly help Fulham achieve promotion

After a forgettable return to the Premier League, Scott Parker has had the summer to assess the complete situation and make necessary changes to his squad in a bid to secure an immediate return to the top-flight.

The Cottagers spent heavily in last summer's transfer window, bringing in more than 10 players to boost their current squad. But that approach massively backfired as they failed to retain their top-flight status, enduring the worst defensive record in the league.

This time around, however, the club has approached things wisely in the market with Parker adding some Championship proven players to his squad.

After doing a wonderful job by keeping hold of star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fulham signed wingers Ivan Cavaleiro, on loan from Wolves and Anthony Knockaert, also on a season-long loan from Brighton.

Parker has also bolstered his midfield options with the loan signings of Harry Arter of Bournemouth and Harrison Reed from Southampton. Truth to be told, Ivan Cavaleiro has been the most influential player for the Cottagers so far this Championship campaign.

Even though Mitrovic has found the back of the net on five occasions in Fulham's first six league games this term, Ivan Cavaleiro has added the much-needed pace and flair to Parker's attack.

The Portuguese has been fantastic during the opening weeks of the 2019/20 campaign, stretching defences with his pace, power and direct running.

After opening his account in arguably the best possible way against Huddersfield Town, the 25-year-old was then directly involved in three goals in the Cottagers' victory over Millwall before setting up Mitrovic's equaliser in Friday evening's 1-1 draw with Cardiff City.

He has looked dangerous in every manner since dropping down from Wolves, forming a very good understanding with Knockaert and Mitrovic so far.

In the 4-3-3 system where Parker wants his team to dominate possession, Cavaleiro has been a livewire on the left flank and performed splendidly so far.

If he can keep himself fit and maintain this consistency over the course of an entire season, the Portuguese has the potential to single-handedly guide the Cottagers back to the Premier League.

Verdict

Cavaleiro has shown he can be a hit in the Championship after achieving promotion with Wolves to the top-flight, but it didn't quite happen for him last season. But now back to England's second-tier, the jet-heeled winger is once again displaying his true colours and proving to be a top acquisition for Fulham.

Spurs line up move for Steven Sessegnon

This article is part of Football FanCast's Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news...

Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move for Fulham defender Steven Sessegnon, the brother of summer signing Ryan, per The Sun.

What's the word?

The report states that Spurs attempted to sign Steven when they were in negotiations for his brother in the summer, making a £3m bid.

That offer was rejected but The Sun states that Fulham fear Spurs will return with another offer soon.

His twin brother has yet to make his debut for Tottenham due to injuries.

But Steven has already made four appearances for the Cottagers this season and has also been included in the England Under-21 squad for clashes with Turkey and Kosovo.

Dogged determination

Daniel Levy made a deal for Ryan very difficult by attempting to bring in his brother too.

Football FanCast understands that negotiations between the two clubs dragged because of his determination to sign both twins.

Fulham wanted the two deals to be separate and, ironically, the path could now be smoother.

Because they already have one, negotiations are unlikely to be anywhere near as complicated as they look to bring Steven into the club, provided they can agree a fee with the Championship club.

Levy has always been regarded as a master negotiator and it appears that his determination could well pay off.

Brighton: Fans react to seeing Knockaert watching away game

Many Brighton fans have expressed their sadness and frustrations after seeing a fan favourite in Anthony Knockaert in the stands to watch AFC Wimbledon take on Brighton U21s in the EFL Trophy competition.

Brighton U21s travelled to Kingsmeadow in the competition and managed to take the three points back to the south coast after two second-half goals.

To the surprise of many fans, Knockaert was seen at the Dons' stadium and the Brighton club account tweeted a picture of the player on their account.

Knockaert, 27, is currently on loan away from the club at Fulham. However, there is an option to buy at the end of the spell, meaning that there is a good chance that he will not return to the Amex.

Knockaert has long been a fan favourite in Brighton, and it's not hard to see why with the player – he scored 27 goals and made 25 assists in his 139 appearances for the Seagulls (via Transfermarkt).

Brighton fans responded pretty negatively, with a split of fans either asking why they let the player go and other fans just enjoying seeing him take the time to watch Brighton.

Reported target would actually be foolish to push for Tottenham move in January – opinion

Fulham fans will be relatively satisfied with their return to the Championship following an emphatic relegation last season.

The Whites were back in the top-flight for just one campaign but struggled after a busy summer interrupted momentum gained from their promotion.

But, with six games played, Scott Parker's side sit in sixth place with the international break offering a chance for reflection on the opening stages of the 2019/20 season.

Having signed Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro in the summer, they were always likely to be challenging towards the top of the table – and so it has proven.

With the pair teaming up with Aleksandar Mitrovic to form a front three, the new unit have already scored nine goals between them this season and look set to terrify Championship defences for the remaining months.

One player who has snuck into a spotlight of his own, however, is right-back Steven Sessegnon.

Having seen his twin brother Ryan signed by Tottenham Hotspur in the summer for around £24million, it has been left to Steven to step-up to the title of 'Fulham's next big thing'.

But it looks like they will face a battle to hold onto him as well, with Spurs looking to reunite the brothers in North London, if the report from The Sun is to be believed.

However, the last thing Sessegnon should be thinking about right now is a move to the Premier League.

It is true, that he has been impressive in his four league games for the club this season. Scott Parker is clearly keen to make him the club's regular right-back and he has repaid that faith, putting in some solid displays and adding another dimension to an already menacing attack.

But he is far from the finished article.

He only has to look at his brother. Ryan had two full seasons with the Whites first-team, dazzling in the Championship before coping admirably in the top-flight, before he had done enough to earn his big-money move.

Spurs may be slightly short in the right-back area but I do not think there is much chance at all of him making that step-up as early as January.

The best option for the youngster is to stay at Craven Cottage for at least this season, if not beyond, and continue to develop into the best player he can.

Moving to Spurs now could significantly stunt his progression and this is a time where he needs to be given some sensible advice from those closest to him.

3 reasons why Tottenham signing Steven Sessegnon makes perfect sense

The 19-year-old has been the subject of interest from the Premier League club.

Tottenham are preparing to reunite Steven Sessegnon with his brother Ryan during the January transfer window with The Sun reporting interest in the Fulham player.

The North London-based club has already made contact with a £3 million bid but that was rejected as 'derisory' by the Cottagers.

Sessegnon has featured heavily in Scott Parker's team this season as they start life back in the Championship and Tottenham's interest makes perfect sense.

Here we look at three reasons why signing the Fulham man makes perfect sense for Tottenham:

Potential

Sessegnon has shown in a handful of appearances for the Cottagers that he has the potential to play at the very highest level.

The 19-year-old has earned his first call-up to the England under-21 ranks this week and the signs for the future are certainly positive.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders with younger players in the past and Sessegnon could be the latest youngster to benefit from his management.

Versatility

Spurs are in desperate need of a right-back but that isn't where Sessegnon's qualities end.

He can also play at the heart of the back four or in central midfield and that would bode well in the Tottenham ranks.

Eric Dier is a player in the current squad that shows superb versatility and a younger player to perform the role of utility man would hardly be a bad thing for Tottenham.

Good business financially

Ryan Sessegnon only cost Tottenham £25 million and he played 120 times for the Fulham first-team having made his debut as a 16-year-old.

Steven only has eight appearances to his name right now and although that number will have increased by the time it gets to January, he is unlikely to command a £25 million fee.

Tottenham are likely to have money to spend but if they can add a talented Englishman to their ranks that can only bode well for the future.
