Shirt Sizes

I wonder if anyone could help please?

I am aiming to buy this season's shirt tomorrow and I know sometimes there can be some fluctuation between what is comfortable.

Can anyone suggest what would be a good fit for a 42" chest, not thin, but not carry much extra weight, pretty much average.

It depends if you want to wear the shirt as a shirt or over some clothing.

I'm 6'2" (and shrinking) and a 44 chest, bought a large last season and it was too small to wear over anything else, fine as a football shirt or in the summer, so I went for an XL and that fits over a other clothing and isn't to tight.
