Fulham sign former Cheltenham Town loanee Michael Hector from Chelsea

New challenge for defender

Michael Hector in action for Cheltenham Town

Former Cheltenham Town loanee Michael Hector has agreed to join Fulham from Chelsea in January.

The Championship club will pay an undisclosed fee for the 27-year-old defender, who has not made a senior appearance since his move to Stamford Bridge in September 2015.

Hector joined the Robins on loan from Reading during the second half of the 2012/13 campaign, making 18 appearances and scoring once to help Mark Yates' side reach the play-off semi-finals, where they were beaten over two legs by Northampton Town.

Since then Hector has appeared on loan from Reading at Aberdeen and from Chelsea for German side Eintracht Frankfurt, Reading, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday.

He has signed a contract with Fulham until the summer of 2022 and the Jamaica international will begin training with them immediately ahead of his move.

"Although Michael can't officially join until January, what's important is he's now a member of Fulham," vice chairman and director of football operations Tony Khan told the club's official website.

"Michael will help us challenge for promotion and make us better in the second half of the season at a time when depth, experience and quality will be at a premium in the Championship."

A true defensive asset? – Here's why Fulham have struck gold by securing a January deal for this 27-year-old ace

Why Fulham have made a smart move by signing Michael Hector

Chelsea have announced that Michael Hector will leave the club on a permanent basis to sign for west London rivals Fulham when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Michael Hector, 27, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Fulham with an option for a further year and the transfer fee between the clubs has been undisclosed.

He joined Chelsea from Reading on transfer deadline day in 2015 before being immediately loaned back out to the Royals for the 2015-16 campaign.

The 27-year-old then spent the subsequent three seasons on loan with Eintracht Frankfurt, Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, failing to make a single appearance for Chelsea as a result. He clearly didn't feature in Frank Lampard's plans at Stamford Bridge and has been allowed to leave the club.

After a disastrous campaign in the Premier League that ended in relegation, Fulham are hoping to secure an immediate return to the top-flight.

The Whites have made a decent start to the Championship campaign as they currently find themselves in sixth place with six matches played thus far. They should have won the game against Cardiff City but ended up drawing 1-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Overall, Scott Parker will be really happy with his team's performances, especially how the boys reacted following Harry Arter's dismissal in the game against Cardiff.

The Cottagers have been really exciting going forward, with the likes of Ivan Cavaleiro, Anthony Knockaert and Aleksandar Mitrovic impressing the most.

They have been defensively decent as well, conceding five goals in six games. But if Fulham are to seal automatic promotion, Parker's men have to show more solidity and robustness at the back.

They'll need to stop conceding silly errors and cheap fouls to increase the chances of earning clean sheets. And the arrival of Michael Hector in the second half of the season would further help Fulham defensively.

Hector impressed on loan with Sheffield Wednesday last season and was an integral player for the Owls, making 37 Championship appearances and scooping their Player of the Year award.

Prior to that, he also enjoyed a loan spell with Hull City and played 38 times in all competitions, scoring once as the Tigers finished strongly to avoid a second consecutive relegation.

The Jamaican international will bring a lot of leadership and experience to the Cottagers' defence, whilst adding much-needed strength and power. Standing at 6ft 4in tall, he's an asset to have at both ends of the pitch.

Verdict

Having struggled to recruit in the defensive areas during the summer, it's understandable why Fulham moved quickly to secure the services of Hector ahead of the January window.

Considering his performances with Sheffield Wednesday and Hull in the last two seasons, the ex-Chelsea starlet represents a smart signing for the Cottagers.

Claudio Ranieri has been included on a 17-man shortlist to become Guinea coach

Ranieri, who departed Roma in May after two months in charge of his boyhood club, is arguably the most successful of the candidates.

He has managed Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Monaco among other clubs in a 33-year managemnet career.

Other names on the shortlist include former Belgium, Tunisia and Algeria coach Georges Leekens and the former DR Congo coach Florent Ibenge.

Paul Put was dismissed as Guinea head coach after the Africa Cup of Nations

Former Burkina Faso and Gabon boss Paulo Duarte, ex-Togo coach Didier Six and Francois Zahoui who has coached both Ivory Coast and Niger will also be considered by the Guinea Football Federation.

The new coach will succeed Paul Put who was dismissed after Guinea were knocked out of the recent Africa Cup of Nations by Algeria at the round of 16 stage.

Put was subsequently banned for life from all football related activities in Guinea by Feguifoot after he was found guilty of allegedly breaching the institution's code of ethics and its code of discipline.

Sweden 1-1 Norway: Emil Forsberg hits equaliser for Sweden after Stefan Johansen had opened scoring

Sweden are second in qualifying Group F, with Norway in fourth place

Winger Emil Forsberg drilled home a second-half equaliser to grab a point for Sweden as they came from behind to draw 1-1 with Scandinavian neighbours Norway in their Group F Euro 2020 qualifier in Stockholm on Sunday.

The Swedes held the upper hand for most of the first half but it was the visitors who went in a goal up at the break as Andreas Granqvist made a terrible error in under-hitting a pass to Victor Lindelof.

The loose ball was snapped up by Joshua King, who powered forward before releasing the ball to Martin Odegaard. The young midfielder prodded the ball on to Norway captain Stefan Johansen, who swept home a simple finish.

Moved into a more central role in the second half, Forsberg got more and more involved in the Swedish attack and he rattled home the equaliser on the hour mark after an intricate build-up by the Swedes.

The derby spirit of the game was reflected in some heavy challenges and less-than-elegant play as the visitors shut up shop knowing that a point would keep them in the hunt for qualification.

With all of the six teams having played six games, Spain lead the group on a maximum 18 points following a 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands, with Sweden second on 11 points, Romania third on 10 and Norway one point further back.

Norway host Spain next on October 12, with the group leaders travelling to Stockholm three days later.
