A Top Man

After returning from his own personal injury nightmare, Andrew Johnson knows only too well what Bobby Zamora has had to contend with recently.

As Zamora continues his rehabilitation, Johnson spoke of how hard the striker's injury hit his friends and teammates at Fulham.

"I was absolutely devastated for Bobby," Johnson told fulhamfc.com. "He had a fantastic season last year and was Player of the Season for me. He's a top, top man.

"He didn't have the best of luck during his first season but he stayed strong. It wasn't his performances, it just wasn't happening in front of goal but that all changed last year.

"The fact that he broke into the England team - he could have had that spot. I still think he will have that spot but the timing of his injury was gutting. Emile Heskey had just retired from international football and Bobby had just played his first game. He was cemented in that squad and should have been starting.

"I can't really express how gutted we all were for him. Me and Bobby are really close and we've always had a good relationship. On the night of his injury me and the kitman went to visit him and took him about twenty quids worth of sweets to cheer him up!

"It's good to see him back at the Training Ground as he's a great character to have around the place. He's a strong character and a very funny guy. He's been quite loud since he came back and it's good to see him back on his feet. If there's one player the Team really misses – it's hard to go without Bobby."

Duff warned over future

Fulham midfielder Zoltan Gera has warned his team-mate Damien Duff that he is gunning for his spot on the right wing.

The Hungarian completed 90 minutes against Wigan last weekend as Fulham ran out comfortable winners and he is now looking for more starts in the Premier League.

Gera, who has started just four times in the league, told the Chronicle: "I just want to play well when I get the chance.

"I'm happy to play 90 minutes and hopefully I can stay in the team.

"I'm happy where I'm playing in the team. I enjoy myself on the right side but I can play in the middle.

"We have a good squad and there's competition for every single place."

Beye back in Villa frame

Aston Villa full-back Habib Beye expects to be fit to face Fulham in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday following an ankle problem.

Beye, 33, sat out the weekend draw with Birmingham after suffering the injury in the Carling Cup victory against Burnley.

"I just tweaked my ankle in the first half and it was swelling a little but it is not going to be a big problem," Beye told the Birmingham Mail.

However if Beye is able to come into contention he could have a problem dislodging Luke Young from the team.

Beye added: "I think you are at your best when you play six, seven or eight games in a row - that gives you your fitness."

Our friends in Sofia

Saw this very interesting tweet from OptaJoe:

Wow. Eight coaches in a calendar year? Considering the Bulgarian league is just 16 teams big, there is a winter break and two months off in the summer, that's an average of what, 2 games and 3 practices in charge?

To think that had it not been for Diomansy Kamara's heroics last September in Sofia, we would have lost to them. And then probably would not have advanced to the knock-out stages. No Shaktar, no Clint Dempsey's chip, no standing up because we still believed, no European Cup Final.

Sorta makes you think how lucky we were. And still are.

Villa View: Marc Albrighton set for Fulham return

Marc Albrighton is set to return to the Aston Villa squad travelling to Fulham this weekend, Mat Kendrick tells Villa View.

But with Stephen Ireland also aiming to break back into the starting eleven after Gerard Houllier told him he needed to work harder, competition for midfield places remains fierce.

Hughes thanked by striker

Fulham striker Andy Johnson believes the arrival of Mark Hughes at the club has helped him get back to fitness.

It has been a nightmare time for Johnson recently with shoulder, groin and knee injuries keeping him out of the side.

However, after making his second appearance from the bench in as many games, he finally looks to be approaching full fitness.

In his absence, Roy Hodgson has been replaced as Cottagers boss by Mark Hughes and Johnson believes his arrival has helped his healing process.

He told the Sun: "I didn't see much of him over the summer with my injuries and then the first part of the season I was in the gym.

"Any player who gets a new boss is eager to prove what they can do and the manager has put me on in the last two games.

"He has been fantastic. He told me to take my time and not to rush back."

Johnson added: "And his training routines have been brilliant, too. He has really helped me get fit quicker because of the intensity of the training.

"Hopefully, in four weeks' time you will see me super match fit and back to how I was."
