3 Fulham decisions Scott Parker should ponder over the international break

Fulham are currently seventh in the EFL Championship table, having taken 19 points from their opening 11 league games and now just one point off the play-offs.

Fulham supporters will rightly be happy with their side's start to the season after a promising start from certain members of the squad, but manager Scott Parker will have a few decisions to ponder over the international break as he looks to pick-up his side's form and make them more consistent.

Here, we look at three decisions that Scott Parker should be pondering over the second international break of the season...

Where he uses Bobby Reid

Loan signing from fellow Championship club Cardiff, Bobby Reid, has settled into life well at Fulham so far, contributing to the general team play while on the pitch.

However, Parker has opted to use Reid in a couple of different positions so far this season, mainly on the left-side of a three-pronged attack or on the right-side of a three-man midfield.

Reid suits both positions with his energetic play and ability on the ball, originally starting his career as a central midfielder, but with the likes of quick and skillful winger Ivan Cavaleiro on the team too, Parker has to deliberate just where he uses his loan star.

Who gets the nod at right-back

Parker has used both Denis Odoi and Steven Sessegnon at right-back so far this season, alternating between the two down the right side of the defence.

The more physical Odoi can provide more of a defensive steel to the side with his physical attributes, while Sessegnon's pace, attacking threat and ability to time a tackle well has also seen him promoted into Fulham's first team.

Parker now has a decision to make on whether he chooses to continue alternating between the pair who bring different aspects to the side or instead just use the one with the other becoming back-up.

Whether Harrison Reed maintains his place

Central midfielder Harrison Reed has put in some impressive performances this season as the box-to-box midfielder,  on loan from Southampton, looks to force his way into the side permanently.

Reed has had to contend with a bit-part role so far, having seen fellow midfielder Stefan Johansen get the nod in certain games ahead of him.

However, Parker knows that he has a quality player on his hands in Reed but has the decision to make on whether he keeps using the midfielder in his three-man midfield or opts to continue starting Johansen again.

Cairney Nominated

Fulham midfielder Thomas Cairney has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for September. It follows Tom already winning the PFA version of the award.

The skipper has played every minute and scored a couple of goals, in what was an unbeaten month for the Whites.

He is on a four-man shortlist for the award, alongside Chey Dunkley (Wigan Athletic), Kamil Grosicki (Hull City) and Nahki Wells (QPR).

'You've risen from the ashes' – Loads of Fulham fans send messages to key figure on special day

Loads of Fulham fans have moved to wish club chairman and co-owner Tony Khan all the best as he celebrates his 37th birthday.

Khan has been involved with the South West Londoners since his dad Shahid bought the club back in 2017, currently taking charge of all football operations within the side.

In his first full season in the role, Fulham were promoted to the Premier League after beating Aston Villa in the 2018 Championship play-off final.

However, it was to be a short stay in the top-flight, with the Whites suffering an immediate and emphatic relegation and they are now hoping to return to the promised land as quickly as possible.

With 11 matches played they currently sit in seventh place, just one point outside the top-six heading into the international break, with Scott Parker now at the helm.

And after the club tweeted their best wishes to the chairman, loads of Fulham fans followed suit...

Kevin McDonald sends message to ex-Fulham ace

Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald has sent a message to former Whites' right-back Ryan Fredericks as the defender celebrated his 27th birthday.

The pair were both integral members of Slavisa Jokanovic's promotion-winning side during the 2017/18 campaign, with Fredericks making the move across London to West Ham in the following summer.

But the pair are obviously still close, with McDonald sharing a photograph of the pair celebrating at Wembley on his Instagram story, along with the caption: "Happy birthday to this legend of a guy."

During his time with Fulham, Fredericks made 114 appearances, providing 16 assists in that time, following his move from Birstol City in the summer of 2015.

Since becoming a Hammer, the 27-year-old has gone on to make 26 appearances including in eight of their league matches so far this season.

For McDonald, however, it has not been as fruitful a campaign, making just two league appearances in total as Scott Parker looks to put his own mark on the team.

The Whites currently sit in seventh place with 11 matches played, heading into the second international break of the season with a clash with Stoke City facing them after the break.

The verdict

I always like to see that players have remained friends despite moving to different clubs – it warms my heart, it does.

McDonald and Fredericks were both excellent during that season and failing to adequately replace the latter was probably a big part of their failing once in the top-flight.

However, they seem to be back on track now, with Parker building another thoroughly exciting side.

The Fulham man who will be seeking to prove that last season's nightmare was just a blip: Comment

This article is part of Football League World's 'Comment' series, this content strand is where the author of the article issues their personal opinion on the topic at hand...

Fulham's start to their return to the Championship has been largely positive, with the White's 2-2 draw with fellow high-flyers Charlton Athletic extending their unbeaten run to six league games, which has seen Scott Parker's side into seventh place in the table, at the time of writing.

Much of the praise has been given to the likes of the Fulham front three, Mitrovic, Cavaleiro and Knockaert, whilst Tom Cairney has also been hitting the headlines for his goal-scoring exploits, however, here at Football League World we like to recognise the players that don't necessarily get the credit they deserve.

And as such we will be taking a look at how Alfie Mawson has bounced back from a terrible first season at the club which ultimately ended with the club being relegated, despite spending heavily on several high profile signings during the 2018/2019 summer transfer window.

Mawson was unlucky to be struck down by injury last campaign, with the former Barnsley centre back having been restricted to just 15 appearances last season, due to a knee injury which he sustained in December last year.

However the ex-Swansea City man has since recovered from his time on the sidelines and has put in some assured displays this campaign as part of Parker's back four impressing Whites fans aplenty, with the 25-year-old having played in all 11 of their Championship games so far.

When looking at Mawson's WhoScored.com defensive statistics, it is clear that he has played a major role in the Fulham backline this season, with the experienced defender having registered an average of 0.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game, which suggests that he operates best as a 'sweeper' rather than a 'stopper'.

In addition to his defensive contribution, Mawson also contributes heavily to Parker's preferred possession-based style of play, with the 25-year-old averaging 91.9 passes per game, yielding a pass success rate of 86.7%, which unsurprisingly puts him amongst the best passers in the Cottagers squad so far this season.

From these statistics, it is fair to say that Parker has had a really positive effect on Mawson's career since taking over as permanent manager, with the defender really establishing himself in the side now.

Lastly, the centre back arrived at Craven Cottage with the weight of a hefty price tag on his shoulders last season, however he is so far proving to be a sound addition by the Whites since regaining full fitness and will certainly be crucial for his side this season as they seek to make an instant return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

'He's too good to waste a decent portion of his career in the Championship' – Fulham fan pundit gives his thoughts on club's summer transfer decision

This article is part of Football League World's 'Regular Punter' series, where we gather original opinions from select, passionate fans of the clubs concerned on matters surrounding their team and share them with a wider audience...

Football League World's Fulham fan pundit Charles Jones has provided his opinion on whether Fulham should have sold star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic this summer or not, whilst also weighing in with his thoughts on the Serbian's long-term future at the club.

Mitrovic has been in stunning form for the Whites this term, scoring eight goals in a blistering start to the campaign, which has come off the back of the former Anderlecht man signing a new five-year contract with the club this summer, killing off any speculation surrounding his future.

As such, we decided to ask our fan pundit for his thoughts on whether the club's decision to not cash in on the Serbian international was the right one, to which Jones responded:

"Absolutely not, Mitrovic was the main catalyst for our last promotion campaign.

"If we needed to balance the books, there were much more efficient ways of doing that such as selling Ryan Sessegnon and getting Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa and Jean Michael Seri off the books."

Jones was then asked whether he thought we would see Mitrovic being sold by the club in the near future, to which he replied:

"He'll almost certainly be here until the end of the season as he signed a new deal this summer and seems committed to getting the club back to the Premier League.

"If we don't achieve promotion this season I think that he'd have every right to want a move away, and I think that is what would happen as he's too good to waste a decent portion of his career in the Championship.

And as for how much Jones expects Fulham to make from Mitrovic's eventual sale, he said:

"If he does go I don't think we should be accepting anything less than £30m for him, as we've just seen Neal Maupay move for £16m to Brighton this summer and Mitro is twice the player he is."

Given the fact that Mitrovic has signed his new deal, it is clear that he sees his long-term future at Fulham, meaning that Whites fans can most likely rest easy until next summer at least.

'I don't think he's hit top gear yet' – Fulham fan pundit gives honest assessment of key man's season so far

This article is part of Football League World's 'Regular Punter' series, where we gather original opinions from select, passionate fans of the clubs concerned on matters surrounding their team and share them with a wider audience...

Football League World's Fulham fan pundit Charles Jones has given his thoughts on Aleksandar Mitrovic's season so far, with the former Newcastle man having surprisingly agreed a new contract this summer with the Whites.

Mitrovic has been one of Fulham's key performers this season, with the Serbian international striker having scored eight goals in his first 11 Championship outings this campaign, putting him top of the league's top scoring list at the time of writing.

Considering the form that Mitrovic has shown during his three seasons at Craven Cottage, it is perhaps surprising that the Whites managed to hold onto the 25-year-old frontman this summer, with Jones providing his thoughts on Mitrovic's decision to stay by saying the following:

"I couldn't quite believe it to be honest.

"There were murmurs that he was going to stick with us in the Championship, but I wrote those off as he'd just had a decent season in the Premier League.

"I remember Fulham's official Twitter sending out a random fire emoji just before he signed his new deal and when it was finally announced I was absolutely buzzing."

Before our fan pundit was then asked about how he thinks the towering front man has fared this season, to which he replied:

"He's the top scorer in the division, but it's kind of scary that I don't think he's hit top gear yet.

"I think that in the early periods of the season, he struggled a little bit as Knockaert and Cavaleiro were constantly looking to cut inside and shoot, rather than delivering the ball directly into the box.

"However, it's quite clear that Parker has put more emphasis on crossing the ball in recent weeks, and that's certainly helped him.

"I honestly think he could hit 30 in the league this season."

If Mitrovic's early season form is anything to go by, there is no reason why our fan pundit's prediction won't come true as the Cottagers seek to return to the Premier League at the first attempt, following last season's relegation.

3 biggest Fulham bargains over the last 5 years

Fulham have spent the majority of their recent history at the top-end of the Championship table or higher, yo-yoing between the top two divisions for the past five years in particular.

In this time, Fulham have made a large number of signings, with some being marvellous and others being largely forgettable. Having had the riches of the Premier League for so long, when Fulham were relegated in 2014, their following seasons were set out with one goal in mind: automatic promotion.

Due to having such high aims, Fulham need to sign players to match the expectations, and typically players of this calibre command a hefty fee. Sometimes, teams can unearth a gem for a small price, which Fulham have been no stranger to.

Here, we take a look at the three biggest bargains for Fulham over the last five years...

Tom Cairney

Fulham signed Tom Cairney from Blackburn Rovers back in the summer of 2015 for a reported fee of around £3million, having impressed for the Lancashire side registering three goals and seven assists in all competitions predominantly from the right-wing. When Fulham signed the then 24-year-old, he had an immediate positive impact scoring eight and assisting six, whilst playing across each position in an attacking midfield trio.

Where the signing of Cairney began to pay massive dividends was in the 2016/17 season under manager, Slaviša Jokanović. This season proved to be a major improvement in Cairney's performance, mainly due to holding down a consistent position in central attacking midfield, whilst also taking on the added responsibility of the captain's armband.

Since Jokanović's first full season, Cairney has made 95 Championship appearances, scoring 22 and assisting 19, one of those goals being the one that clinched Fulham's promotion back to the top flight at Wembley.

Aleksandar Mitrović

After arriving in England at Newcastle, Mitrović struggled to demonstrate the potential he had shown at Anderlecht. At Newcastle, issues surfaced about his disciplinary record on top of his patchy form and thus never managed to nail down a first-team place.

In January 2018, Fulham offered the Serbian international a chance to revitalise his career with a loan move to the play-off hopefuls. Immediately after that move, Mitrović almost single-handedly dragged Fulham into the play-off picture with 12 goals in 17 appearances, earning himself a permanent transfer to the Cottagers the following summer, when they were promoted.

While the permanent fee was reported as around £22million, which is not cheap by any means. However, the loan signing of him, and the impact he had in a short space, more than earned to money (with play-off glory) to pay the fee Newcastle commanded.

Ivan Cavaleiro

The most recent name on this list is this summer's addition, on-loan Wolves winger Ivan Cavaleiro. Fulham signed the Portuguese winger initially on loan but with an option for a permanent transfer next summer. While it is only two months into his first campaign at the club, Cavaleiro is already showing the dazzling form that helped guide Wolves to the Championship title back in 2018.

Making 10 appearances so far this campaign, Cavaleiro has notched four goals and provided three assists. These numbers alone present a very good start, but given the impact and quality of the efforts emphasise his abilities. Without his contributions, Fulham would be five points and seven league places worse off.

Even though it is early days in his Fulham career, it is hard to disagree that he will be a crucial player if Fulham are to lodge a serious promotion bid.

Miguel Almiron red carded again as Aleksandar Mitrovic gets last gasp winner

An eventful Thursday night for Miguel Almiron.

Although only a friendly, the Newcastle striker finding himself sent off against Serbia.

Two yellow cards in the 43rd and 54th minutes adding up to a red.

This was a second red card in just over six months for Miguel Almiron, having also been sent off in a 4-2 defeat to Mexico in March.

To make matters even wore, former Newcastle forward Aleksandar Mitrovic struck a last gasp winner for Serbia.

Elsewhere, Martin Dubravka was beaten in the 25th minute by Kieffer Moore but Slovakia equalised in the 53rd minute through Kucka. Dubravka's team then dominating but unable to find a winner. The game ending 1-1.

With two group games left to play, Slovakia are three points behind leaders Croatia and a point ahead of third placed Hungary.

The Sean Davis Column

I was at the Cottage on Saturday, and although it was the win we were after, it was still a very entertaining game. I thought first half Charlton did really well, they went man to man and won a lot of the battles throughout the pitch, but we showed great resilience to come from behind, not once but twice. We were actually unlucky in the end, with the chances we had, not to nick it. We hit the bar twice, and Bobby Reid was so unlucky in stoppage time. Overall it's disappointing not to get the three points, but we saw great character from the lads.

Fair play to Scott for the changes he made at the break. It was very brave, especially to put Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro as wing-backs, but it paid off. We kept the ball a lot better, our intensity was better, we won a lot more balls in the middle of the park. I thought Bobby Reid changed the game. He was very, very lively and was so unfortunate not to score at least once. The squad is so tough now and competition for places is high, but he wasn't sulking at being on the bench, he just made sure he applied himself the best he could when he came on.

We're six unbeaten now, and taking seven points from the last three games is good form going into the international break. In recent years we've never really started well in the Championship – we usually have to wait until Christmas for the form to kick in! It's great that we're up there already – three points off top – so we're in a good space. Once we start grinding out 1-0 wins, keeping clean sheets, that's going to see us kick on even more. I feel this squad is definitely good enough to beat anyone on our day. They're buying into what Scott wants to do – possession football, intensity, creating chances – and with the attacking players we've got, we're always likely to produce some magic.

Aleksandar Mitrović is top of the scoring charts now, but that comes as little surprise as he's one of the best strikers in the league, if not the best. It's not just his goals that he brings to the team, it's his work ethic. You look at opposition centre-halves after 90 minutes, and they know they've been in a game. He gives everything, he's aggressive, he's determined, he's got that will to win. We produced so many crosses in the second half on Saturday, put on so much pressure, and that's exactly the right idea, because even if he doesn't win it he's still going to cause havoc.

The last two home games have seen some lads I know very well receive the Forever Fulham award. Barry Hayles picked one up against Wigan Athletic, and Chris Coleman and Kit Symons collected theirs at the Charlton match. All three were at Fulham for so long and they always produced week in and week out. They're great ambassadors for the Club, so I'm buzzing for them. It's nice to see the Club showing appreciation towards former players, something they're very good with actually.

Watching the ups and downs since 1958, wouldn't have it any other way, what a roller coaster of a club.

Really?  I had been wondering why the articles were so weak.  That'd explain it. In fairness if it's his own initiative it's a small step in the right direction but lacks significant quality and depth in analysis and unique insights and becomes a failed attempt to be clever.
