Stoke City news and transfer gossip - Reading the riot act at Reading and pleas for Jones to stick with winning formula

Stoke City readying themselves for hotly anticipated return to action against Fulham

It's been a busy day for Stoke's relegation rivals Reading and everyone is left wondering what impact that will have on events at the foot of the Championship.

Reading, currently two places and three points better off than Stoke, have avoided the temptation to bring Mark Hughes back into management and gone for his old sidekick instead.

Mark Bowen, the man charged with finding a new boss as Reading's sporting director, has taken a short cut by appointing himself and that hasn't exactly gone down too well with their fans.

Here's hoping they're right, for Stoke's sake, and back in the Potteries meanwhile Lou Macari has joined those calling on Nathan Jones to stick with a winning team when City rev back into life on Saturday against Fulham.

We will bring you all the latest Stoke City debate, news and gossip throughout the day. We would also like to hear from you, so please send us your views via our Stoke City Facebook and Twitter accounts, or have your say by joining our new Stoke news and gossip group.

Scott Parker highlights the one thing Fulham need to address ahead of Stoke City match

Stoke City v Fulham preview | The Potters return to Championship action after the international break with a home game against Fulham, who are looking to bounce back to the Premier League

Scott Parker wants Fulham to change their mentality as they prepare to return from the international break with a game against Stoke City.

Fulham are looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and currently sit a point and a place outside the Championship play-off places.

The Cottagers had a dismal return to top-flight football last season, dismissing Slavisa Jokanovic in November, Claudio Ranieri in February and then being relegated under caretaker boss Parker.

He was appointed permanently in the summer and has made a steady start to the season with just two defeats in Fulham's opening 11 games.

They went into the international break on the back of a 2-2 draw with city rivals Charlton Athletic, and return with a trip to the bet365 Stadium.

A Stoke side buoyed by that excellent win away to Swansea City last time out stand in their way of three points.

"I often speak about this team and there is one thing we need to address, and we need to change here, (and that) is the mentality," Parker told West London Sport. "A real desire and a real urgency about us and a togetherness. That takes time.

"This is a team which, three months ago, was used to losing football matches, got relegated and all the negativity what comes around that. There are still some scars along the way and, ultimately, every day we work on a mentality and I see that.

"I want to see a team that represents myself on the sideline. I want to see a desire, a real work ethic and a togetherness and a never-say-die attitude.

"The challenge for me, and the challenge for the players, is to keep believing in that. Instead of getting it in bits and drabs, or one 90 minutes here and another there."

Odemwingie, Arnautovic, Assaidi and Walters - and a Fulham revenge mission at Stoke City

Stoke City v Fulham preview | The Potters welcome Fulham to the bet365 Stadium on Saturday after the international break and we have taken a look back at their last meeting in the Potteries

The return of Championship football on Saturday will see Fulham make the trip to the bet365 Stadium for the first time since May 2014.

It could not be a more contrasting situation from five and a half years ago as Stoke City and the Cottagers do battle again.

Fulham arrived in the Potteries for the penultimate game of the 2013-14 season knowing they needed to win to keep alive their hopes of Premier League survival.

But Stoke, under Mark Hughes, put an emphatic end to that with a 4-1 victory sealed through Peter Odemwingie, Marko Arnautovic, Oussama Assaidi and Jon Walters.

That result – followed up by an away win over West Bromwich Albion on the final day – saw Stoke finish ninth in the table with a then-record total of 50 points.

The Potters would eclipse that 50-point total the following two seasons (54 and 51) but they wouldn't better that ninth place during their 10 years in the top flight.

And so fast-forward to today.

Fulham, although again tasting relegation from the Premier League again last season, seem on an upward curve under Scott Parker.

The former midfielder took permanent charge this summer and has guided them to a point and a place outside the play-off places at this early stage of the season.

That same story can't be said for Stoke.

The Potters are staring at the very real possibility of a second relegation in three seasons, with Nathan Jones' men currently rock bottom of the table.

They are three points adrift of Huddersfield Town, in 21st, but only a shock – albeit impressive – win at previous leaders Swansea City saved them from going into the second international break of the season without a league win.

Stoke and Fulham have done battle since that 4-1 drubbing in 2014 – but it was at Craven Cottage as Stoke won 1-0 in the League Cup in September 2015.

So the bet365 will still hold unpleasant memories for those Fulham fans who travelled north on that miserable, relegation-confirming afternoon.

Jones will be hoping Saturday's encounter holds similar feelings come 5pm.
