Parker: Difficult Test

Scott Parker believes Stoke City's position in the table belies the ability they have at their disposal.

The Potters currently prop up the Sky Bet Championship, but will have been buoyed by a first win of the season just prior to the international break.

"They're a side which only a few years ago was a Premier League team," Parker told FFCtv. "You look at their squad now and it's very strong.

"It's got players within it who have been in and around the Premier League, and everything else that comes with that, in terms of stadium and facilities, they're right up there with a Premier League team.

"Of course they've had a bit of a bad run at the start of this season, but certainly when you look at their players and their team play, they're a good side. They're going to cause us problems, like other teams will.

"The league says what it says, and I understand that, but ultimately I realise that come Saturday it's going to be difficult for us.

"It's always a difficult place to go, Stoke; very, very tough with a good atmosphere. There are going to be times on Saturday where we might have to weather a storm, whether that's at the start of the game, whether that's after 15 minutes, or whatever it may be.

"There is going to come a time when we need to be resilient in those moments. We need to show our quality and get control of the game to build from there. I reiterate that this is a really good team, with talented individuals. We have a strong squad, but it's going to be a tough game for us."

EFL And EFL Clubs United In Tackling Discrimination

The EFL and EFL Clubs are united in tackling discrimination and prejudiced behaviour in all its forms and are reminding supporters that no forms of abuse will be tolerated ahead of this weekend's fixtures.

Everyone attending or taking part in a football match has the right to feel safe, valued and included and supporters are therefore being reminded of the positive steps that can be taken on matchdays.

Work is continuing with the Premier League and the Football Association to improve processes and procedures in place to address discrimination in stadiums, with commitments made to review how Clubs sanction and educate offenders, tackle under-representation across all levels of the game and improve training provisions for stewards to ensure they are best equipped to recognise and respond to issues as they arise.

However, there is no room for complacency and, on Show Racism the Red Card day, the EFL and its Clubs are reinforcing the collective approach to be taken under the header 'Not today or any day', if anyone experiences, or is subject to, discriminatory behaviour.

The EFL recommends the following methods:

1. Report it to a steward or Police Officer. Reporting incidents early helps Clubs to take immediate action.

2. Confidentially report it via the Kick It Out App, available on iPhone and Android.

3. Report it to Kick it Out on Social media (@KickItOut), phone (0800 169 9414) or email ([email protected])

4. Via the Kick It Out website form at https://www.kickitout.org/forms/online-reporting-form

In addition, Clubs, players, managers and officials have also been reminded of a matchday protocol introduced to domestic football ahead of the 2019/20 season, alongside The Football Association and the Premier League, in a attempt to ensure the matchday environment provides a positive experience for all.

The protocol is designed to ensure that incidents of abuse are effectively addressed, perpetrators are identified and dealt with, while at the same time make sure that the match is not unduly interrupted with a step by step guide mapped out to support participants take the right course of action in such a scenario.

Further details regarding the matchday protocol are available here:

Fulham boss in storm warning ahead of Stoke City clash

We can't have our heads in the clouds at Stoke City says Fulham boss

New Fulham boss Scott Parker has guided the Cottagers to seventh (Image: Getty)

Fulham manager Scott Parker has told his players to turn a blind eye to the league table.

Stoke might lie bottom heading into this weekend's clash with Parker's men, but he says Saturday's hosts are Premier League in just about every other respect.

Parker, who has steered Fulham to seventh in his first full season at the helm, cautions: "They're a side which only a few years ago was a Premier League team. You look at their squad now and it's very strong.

"It's got players within it who have been in and around the Premier League, and everything else that comes with that, in terms of stadium and facilities, they're right up there with a Premier League team.

1 in, 1 out: The likely Fulham XI Parker will field v Stoke

Fulham will head into this weekend's clash with Stoke City confident of breaking back into the Championship's top-six by the end of play.

Their 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic before the international break saw them slip out of the coveted play-off spot, but with the intention to return to the Premier League at the first-time of asking, they will remain intent on fixing that.

But Stoke will not be pushed over by the Whites.

They have experienced a tough start to the season but before the break won their first-game of the season against Swansea City, so will come into this one full of confidence as well.

So, how will Parker look to set-up his troops for this one?

Here is what we think is likely...

It would be amazing if Parker were to make too many changes given how well they have played so far this season.

Despite a few shaky moments, Bettinelli is likely to remain between the sticks but there could be one change in front of him.

Bryan, Ream and Maswon will retain their spots in defence but do not be surprised to see Sessegnon drop out at right-back for the more defense minded Odoi.

It is a switch that Parker has employed before this season when playing away from home and considering the boost in confidence Stoke will be playing with, it arguably makes sense as well.

It is more than likely that Parker will go with his strongest midfield trio. Cairney, Arter and Johansen offer the best balance in the middle of the park, with Cairney able to dictate play with the greatest effect.

Whether or not to bring Bobby Decordova-Reid back into the front line may be on Parker's mind as well, but ultimately I expect him to stick with the lethal trio that have done so well so far.

Stoke City v Fulham
SAT 19 Oct 2019   Championship
Venue: bet365 Stadium

Stoke City went into the international break on the back of a first league win of the season under Nathan Jones, in the top v bottom clash at Swansea

Stoke City boss Nathan Jones is seeking back-to-back wins for the first time since he took over in January when his side host Fulham.

Nathan Collins is available after completing a three-game ban and James McClean has recovered from injury.

Fulham manager Scott Parker has a fully-fit squad to pick from as he looks to extend his side's six-game unbeaten run in the Championship.

Harrison Reed and Bobby Reid hope to force their way into the line-up.

Stoke have picked up just one home point out of a possible 18 this season, but they lifted the pressure on Jones in the final game before the international break when they won at leaders Swansea.

Substitute Scott Hogan's last-minute winner was the first significant goal scored by Stoke in the 90th minute or later in almost four years, since Marko Arnautovic's injury-time penalty in a 4-3 win at Everton in December 2015.

Match facts

Stoke City and Fulham have not met since the Potters' 1-0 League Cup win at Craven Cottage in September 2015.
The last time the two sides met in a league match outside the top flight was at third-tier level in March 1999, when the Cottagers won 1-0 under Kevin Keegan.
Fulham have completed 6,091 passes in the Championship this season - 1,257 more than any other side.
Stoke are looking to win consecutive league matches under Nathan Jones for the first time. They last did so in October 2018, under Gary Rowett.
Stoke striker Scott Hogan has scored with all three of his shots on target in the Championship this season.
Fulham's Tom Cairney has been involved in eight goals in his last 10 Championship appearances (5 goals, 3 assists).

Scott Parker lists the issues Stoke can pose to his Fulham side

Scott Parker has stated that despite Stoke's league position, they will be a difficult test for his Fulham side on Saturday.

Stoke have won just one game this season, although that did come in their last outing when they won away at highly-rated Swansea City.

That might be the result to really kick-start the season for Nathan Jones' side as they look to climb up the league and out of the relegation zone.

Fulham, on the other hand, have been impressive of late and are scoring a number of goals past their opposition as they look for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Parker has stated that Stoke will be a tough test for their side, and there will be times when they must weather the storm on Saturday.

Speaking to Fulham's official club website, Parker said: "The league says what it says, and I understand that, but ultimately I realise that come Saturday it's going to be difficult for us.

"It's always a difficult place to go, Stoke; very, very tough with a good atmosphere. There are going to be times on Saturday where we might have to weather a storm, whether that's at the start of the game, whether that's after 15 minutes, or whatever it may be."

The Lowdown: Aston Villa U23s

The Situation:

The Under-23s head back to Villa Park for the second time in as many seasons on Monday as they prepare for their first game back in PL2 action since the international break.

This marks a busy spell for the Young Whites in the lead up to the conclusion of the Leasing.com Trophy Group campaign and a spate of PL Cup games in the coming two weeks.
Form:
Villa:

The hosts sit one place above Fulham in the league with a game fewer played. The last game in league action ended in an impressive 4-1 win over Manchester United but were well-beaten by Exeter City in PL Cup action.
Fulham:

The opposite turn of fortune is the case in Mark Pembridge and Colin Omogbehin's side. An excellent win in the PL Cup against Everton is tainted by a defeat to Middlesbrough in the PL2 and a narrow defeat to MK Dons in the Leasing.com Trophy.
He said:

Jaydn Mundle-Smith is keen to use the Everton game as a springboard to starting a run of form.

"Coming off the back of a 2-1 win, I think the team will be in good stead to keep the momentum going and get a good run going.

"The MK Dons game was a tough one to take as I feel we should have come away with at least a point, but the team showed good character against an established EFL side.

"I still feel that the team needs to be more clinical, taking opportunities is vital against top sides starting with Villa on Monday."
FFCTV:

FFCtv will not have an available stream for this fixture as this is an away clash. The game against Sunderland on Friday at Motspur Park will be streamed via the website.

'They're right up with Premier League team' - Fulham boss's verdict on Stoke City

Stoke City latest | Promotion-chasing manager Scott Parker heaps praise on Stoke City despite their position at the other end of the Championship table

Scott Parker is under no illusions about the size of task facing Fulham this weekend when they travel north to take on Stoke City.

The Potters will come into the game with an unusual feeling after picking up their first win of the Championship season at high-flying Swansea prior to the international break, to take some of the pressure off Nathan Jones.

Parker is refusing to underestimate Jones' side, and knows that the squad boasts quality, even if their league position doesn't reflect that at the minute.

"They're a side which only a few years ago was a Premier League team. You look at their squad now and it's very strong," said Parker.

"It's got players within it who have been in and around the Premier League, and everything else that comes with that, in terms of stadium and facilities, they're right up there with a Premier League team.

Stoke Away Days

In recent history, Fulham generally haven't had fun when we have travelled to Stoke. We have played away at the Britannia Stadium, or the Bet365 Stadium as it is now known, seven times since 2008, losing five times, drawing once and winning once. One of those defeats was a League Cup fixture while the rest were in the Premier League. During their Premier League tenure Stoke became a side who no one liked facing. Well-drilled and defensive, they caused one or two upsets as well as generally becoming a very difficult team to beat. Our sole victory there in recent times was thanks to some Bairdino magic back at Christmas of 2010. Two ridiculous strikes from the Northern Irishman inside the first 10minutes helped us to a 2-0 win. Wonderful scenes.

One of the worst days for me as a Fulham fan was when our thirteen year term in the Premier League came to an end after a pathetic 4-1 defeat to Stoke under Felix Magath. That day was nothing short of a Fulham calamity in the way we were set up and the way we played. Yes, relegation was looking likely anyway, but that performance pretty much summed us up under Magath. For that to be our last visit to Stoke, it's understandable why so many of us have bad memories and a feeling of unease when we look ahead to tomorrow.

But we are in a new era at Fulham. Yes, last season was rocky, but Fulham under Scott Parker and the ownership of Shadid Khan are a different force. We still have issues to sort out defensively, but we are a side who could feasibly take points off anyone in the division. We still have maturing to do under Parker, but our side consists of the talent needed to get promoted again. However, tomorrow is also somewhat of a banana skin. Stoke have had a horrible season and sit bottom of the table. They have taken one measly point out of a possible 18 at home with Nathan Jones under a lot of pressure at the helm. But fitting nicely with the Championship's unpredictability, they did beat then leaders Swansea City away from home last time out. Classic Championship.

We are currently unbeaten in six league games, but draws are becoming far too frequent. If we want to go up automatically, we need to put teams at the wrong end of the table to bed comfortably. If you have watched much of Stoke this season you will know that defensively they have been all over the place. Jack Butland in goal is an England International, but he has made mistakes time and time again. Confidence is low in the Stoke camp. We know what that is like after suffering so badly last season and we know that once the heads drop, it's very hard to get anything from a game. That's what we need to do to Stoke tomorrow, make their heads drop early on. The longer they feel like they are in the game, the harder it will be for us.

We know that you should never underestimate a team struggling at the bottom of the table, but we should be targeting 3 points tomorrow. We can't afford to slip up against the bottom placed team.

Fulham's style could suit us, says Jones

Fulham's style could suit the Potters
Jones cautious of Cottagers attacking threat
City and Fulham set to go head to head

Fulham's quality in the attacking third of the pitch is something Stoke City will be wary of, but it could aid the Potters' chances of claiming the three points says Nathan Jones.

With a regular quartet of attacking talent, including the Championship's current top scorer, Alexandar Mitrovic, Scott Parker's side are well equipped for an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Whites head into tomorrow's match unbeaten in their last six fixtures, whilst the Potters picked up their first win of the season against Swansea City before the international break.

With both sides set to battle it out for the three points in North Staffordshire, the City manager says Fulham's attacking style could suit his own team's prospects of claiming the spoils.

"They've got some real marquee players, their front three is as good as you're going to get at this level and they carry a real threat, but we have had more issues when teams come here and they don't appear to want to win the game," said the boss.

"If a side comes here with real ambition, then let's see what happens because I believe that will suit us."

He added: "That's not to say it will be an easy game because Fulham are a fantastic side with a very good way of playing so I think it will be a very good footballing game tomorrow and there will be a lot of attacking prowess on show."

Do Fulham have best attack in Championship? Stoke City boss's verdict on promotion chasers

Stoke City latest | Nathan Jones must find a way to stop Ivan Cavaleiro, Anthony Knockaert and Aleksandar Mitrović

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ivan Cavaleiro are tasked with firing Fulham to promotion. (Image: Jordan Mansfield/Getty Images)

Only two teams have scored more than Fulham so far in the Championship this season, no one has had so many shots from outside the box and no one has had so many shots on target.

Scott Parker is trying to win promotion straight back to the Premier League with his attack – and that's been looking like a good philosophy when his three-pronged attack is eight-goal Aleksandar Mitrović, Anthony Knockaert, on loan from Brighton, and Ivan Cavaleiro, on loan from Wolves.

Tom Cairney has chipped in with another five goals from midfield too.

So Nathan Jones will not be taking them lightly when they head to the bet365 Stadium tomorrow – even if he sounds like he'd rather take on a team that was coming to attack rather than defend.

"They've got some real marquee players in terms of (Tom) Cairney and a front three as good as anything at this level," said the Stoke City manager.

"They've got a real threat - but let's see because we tend to have slightly more issues against teams who come here and don't want to win the game or want to win it and have less ambition

"But that's not to suggest it will be in any way an easy game because Fulham are a fantastic side with a very good way of playing.

"I think it will be a good footballing game tomorrow and there will be a lot of attacking prowess on show."

3 ways Stoke can disrupt Scott Parker's Fulham tomorrow and try and seal three points

Stoke City will be aiming to build upon their recent victory over Swansea City by securing a positive result against Fulham at the bet365 Stadium this weekend.

Following a dismal start to the 2019/20 campaign under manager Nathan Jones, the Potters sealed all three points against the Jacks in dramatic fashion earlier this month.

With the game seemingly heading towards a draw following goals from Andre Ayew and Sam Clucas, Stoke snatched victory in the 90th minute as Scott Hogan fired past goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

Currently bottom of the Championship standings, the Potters could close the gap between them and safety on Saturday by securing victory over Scott Parker's side on Saturday.

Here, we take a look at three ways that Stoke could disrupt Fulham tomorrow...

Exploit the Cottagers on the counter-attack

Considering that Fulham are almost certain to dominate vast sways of possession on Saturday, Jones may find it beneficial to set up his side to counter-attack at the bet365 Stadium.

Although the Cottagers have been utterly fantastic at times this season in an attacking sense, they do tend to leave gaps at the back when searching for goals.

If Jones opts to use the pace of Hogan and Tyrese Campbell to his advantage on Saturday, he could expose Fulham's defensive frailties.

Overpower Fulham in the heart of midfield

Having recently changed Stoke's formation to incorporate a diamond in the heart of midfield, Jones should stick by this particular set-up for the club's clash with Fulham.

Providing that the likes of Peter Etebo and Badou Ndiaye can produce stand-out displays, there is every chance that the Potters could overpower the Cottagers in midfield this weekend.

If this does occur, Stoke will fancy their chances of securing a second consecutive victory in the Championship.

Utilise the guile of Hogan to their advantage

Since joining Stoke on a season-long loan from Aston Villa in August (via BBC Sport), Scott Hogan has illustrated some real signs of promise for the club.

Having recently made a decisive impact as a substitute for the Potters, the forward will be confident that he can use his guile to cause Fulham issues on Saturday.

If Jones opts to start Hogan, Stoke could benefit considerably from the former Brentford man's presence as he will be able to offer an out ball for the club's defenders.

2 ways Fulham can hurt Stoke City on Saturday

Fulham take on Stoke City this weekend in what is sure to be a fascinating encounter at the Bet365 Stadium.

The Whites' 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic before the international break saw them slip out of the coveted play-off spot, but with the intention to return to the Premier League at the first-time of asking, they will remain intent on fixing that.

But Stoke will not be pushed over by the Londoners.

They have experienced a tough start to the season but before the break won their first-game of the season against Swansea City, so will come into this one full of confidence as well.

However, here are TWO ways that they can hurt the Potters...

Attacking intent

Whilst Stoke's back four consists of some experienced players, it is not a unit that looks particularly settled.

With James McClean still frequently playing at left-back and Cameron Carter-Vickers filling in on the right, there are some square pegs in round holes.

Therefore, if Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert can get at them early on then it could be a very long day for the Potters, especially with Danny Batth and Bruno Martins Indi not exactly blessed with pace either.

Mark Clucas

There is little doubt that the versatile midfielder is the most potent creative threat in the Potters midfield.

He has three goals and an assist in the Championship already this season so if Fulham want to frustrate their opponents early, marking Clucas out of the game would be a good start.

It seems the perfect job for Stefan Johansen. The energetic Norwegian should be more than capable of tracking the former Swansea man all game, giving his side a big advantage in the process.

3 things we expect to see in Stoke's clash with Fulham tomorrow

Stoke City make their return to Championship action tomorrow following in the international break as they host Fulham at the bet365 Stadium.

The Potters, who are currently bottom of the second-tier, will be aiming to build upon their recent victory over Swansea City by securing a positive result against the Cottagers.

With manager Nathan Jones still under a considerable amount of pressure to deliver the goods, it will be intriguing to see how he sets his side up on Saturday.

Given that Fulham are expected to be challenging for a top-six finish this season after their relegation from the top-flight earlier this year, Stoke know that they will have to be on top-form if they are to clinch victory.

Here, we take a look at THREE things that we expect to see in the Potters' clash with Fulham tomorrow...

Plenty of goals

When you consider that Stoke and Fulham have scored a combined total of 31 league goals during the 2019/20 campaign, it would be incredibly surprising if Saturday's clash ends in a stalemate.

Whilst Sam Clucas and Scott Hogan will be aiming to add their individual goal tallies, the Potters will have to be wary of Aleksandar Mitrovic who has already found the back of the net on eight occasions for Fulham this season.

Providing that both sides show a willingness to attack, the supporters in attendance at the bet365 Stadium may witness an enthralling encounter.

A battle for supremacy in the heart of midfield

With Jones opting to utilise four central midfielders in the club's victory over Swansea, it would be somewhat of a shock if he alters his game plan on Saturday.

If the likes of Clucas, Peter Etebo and Badou Ndiaye can dominate the battle in the heart of midfield tomorrow, the Potters may be able to achieve a relative amount of success against Fulham.

Another crushing home defeat for Stoke

Whilst Stoke will be hoping to put on a show in front of their own supporters this weekend, they may end up suffering another crushing defeat at the bet365 Stadium.

Considering that Scott Parker has an abundance of attacking talent at his disposal at Fulham, his side could prove to be too strong for the Potters.

If Stoke do lose to the Cottagers, Jones will be hoping that his players can deliver a response to this setback in their clash with Sheffield Wednesday next Tuesday.

2 Fulham signings who have failed to hit the ground running

Fulham have had a good start to the season so far, currently a point outside the Championship Playoffs with 19 points from 11 games and looking for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Manager Scott Parker delved into the transfer market this summer, his first as a manager, to look for the players to launch a promotion charge and to also put his mark on the Cottagers' squad.

Like with every manager in football, Parker came up with some good signings this summer however also came up with two who weren't as good. Here, we take a look at two players that Parker signed this summer who have failed to hit the ground running...

Josh Onomah

Midfielder Onomah joined on the last day of the transfer window as part of the £25 million deal that took teenage winger Ryan Sessegnon to White Hart Lane.

Onomah has previous Championship experience with Aston Villa and has been an impressive performer with them at the level before, however, the 22-year-old winger has struggled for game-time so far at Craven Cottage since joining the club and has currently made just the four appearances in the Championship.

Despite having strong midfield competition around him such as Harry Arter, Stefan Johansen and Harrison Reed who have all started the season off brightly, Onomah will be looking to make his own mark on the Fulham squad in the near future as his experience at one of London's oldest teams can so far be described as a failure when a player of his quality should be making an impact.

Bobby Reid

Somewhat surprisingly, the forward made the loan move from fellow Championship side Cardiff City in the summer after falling out of manager Neil Warnock's plans, however, the former Bristol City striker and fan favourite is yet to really set the world alight at his new club.

Despite being given a chance so far and being a regular in league football, Reid is yet to find the back of the net for the Cottagers and it won't be long until manager Parker starts to take the striker out the side with the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert all putting in more impressive displays at the top end of the pitch than Reid is currently doing.

Reid will need to start netting the goals for his new side soon if he is to maintain hopes of remaining in the Fulham XI.

Everton's abysmal record makes signing Moussa Dembele an absolute must

This article is part of Football FanCast's Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news...

According to Football Insider, Everton have a 'strong interest' in former Fulham striker Moussa Dembele and are set to battle with other Premier League clubs for the signature of the £40m-rated attacker.
What's the word, then?
The report claims that Dembele is willing to leave Lyon for a return to English football, and the former Celtic man regards a transfer back to England as a logical step in his career.
This news should come as a major boost for Everton as the club needs young, proven goalscorers to lead the line for them for years to come. However, a fee has not been reported, although money has not been a worry for the Blues in recent years having spent £50m on Richarlison and £45m on Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Brands must do everything he can

Everton have struggled tremendously on the goalscoring front this season, registering just six goals in eight Premier League games, which has helped put them inside the relegation zone.
Players who are looked at for goals, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison have far from pulled their weight this campaign. Both forwards have just two league goals each so far, which is especially alarming considering the Brazilian's brilliant form last season when he netted 13.
