Stoke City 2-0 Fulham

Tyrese Campbell is the son of former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell

Stoke City moved off the bottom of the Championship as Tyrese Campbell's first league goal for the Potters helped them to a home victory over Fulham.

The 19-year-old coolly slotted in after latching on to Lee Gregory's flick on before Gregory made it 2-0 with a late penalty as Stoke earned back-to-back wins under Nathan Jones for the first time.

The visitors dominated possession and pushed for an equaliser after the break, but Bobby Decordova-Reid headed their best chance straight at Adam Federici.

Fulham were made to pay for their lack of creativity when Scott Hogan was brought down by goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli 10 minutes from full-time and Gregory converted the spot-kick.

Barnsley's 1-1 draw with Swansea, who Jones' side beat before the international break, sees the Tykes fall to the foot of the table, while Stoke move up a place.

The Potters were good value for their first home win since March, with Joe Allen and Campbell also going close before the break.

They now face two tricky games away from home, at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday and against Millwall at The Den next Saturday, and could move out of the relegation zone with a win at Hillsborough.

Stoke City manager Nathan Jones told BBC Radio Stoke:

"I'm very proud of the group and the fans were outstanding again today.

"They have been through a tough time, they have had to be patient.

"I thought we were brilliant today. We are starting to get some continuity. We have a fully fit squad which at times is difficult.

"We scored two on chances and clear cut chances, (but) we could have scored more."

Fulham manager Scott Parker:

"We'll dust ourselves down. This a young squad which has been put together and along the way there's going to be a few bumps.

"It's [defeat] not a head-on collision and it's not something which is a real massive issue, but it's a bump, which is going to happen.

"How we bounce back from this will ultimately determine how we do this year. That's the challenge now, we have to come back fighting. That's the only thing you can do.

"It's one football match and we have to go again."

Head Coach press conference

Scott Parker acknowledged that Fulham weren't at their best at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts didn't outplay the Whites, but managed to sneak a goal in either half to claim a 2-0 win.

"We're disappointed, to be honest with you," Parker said afterwards. "I felt the nuts and bolts of it is that we weren't clinical enough in either box today.

"Certainly first half I felt as an attacking threat we lacked a real impetus about us. We controlled the game like we knew we'd have to as they'd come off the back of a good result against a good side [Swansea City].

"This team was sitting bottom of the league but they've got players who have played in the Champions League, there's Premier League pedigree in this team. That's something we spoke about before the game, that they're in a false position in the table.

"I felt we controlled the game in the first half, got into good areas, but when we got into those areas we lacked an impetus.

"Second half we addressed it and were more progressive. But in saying that, [we conceded from] two long balls, we defended poorly against them and we weren't clinical enough when we had our moments."

The loss at the bet365 Stadium brings an end to Fulham's unbeaten run, but Parker insists the important thing now is to see a reaction from his team.

"The international break probably came at the wrong time for us," he stated. "We were six games unbeaten and the break stalled that momentum.

"We had a bad result today, [but] games come thick and fast in this league. This league is very indifferent, we've seen that, very inconsistent, and we're part of that, no doubt. I don't think there's any one team who are really taking it by storm.

"Wednesday comes now, Luton at home, it's a big game for us and then we go to Boro.

"I've said it many a time, I've said it to the players, this is a young squad. When I say young I don't mean in age, I mean it's young in terms of when it got put together.

"Obviously along the way there's going to be a couple of bumps – today's a bump. It's not a head on collision, not something that's a massive issue, it's a bump.

"How we come out of this, how we bounce back from this, will ultimately determine what we're about and what we do this year.

"That's the challenge now, we dust ourselves off, we analyse the game and work out where we went wrong, and we come back fighting."

Stoke 2-0 Fulham: Potters move off bottom of the Championship
Report and highlights from the Sky Bet Championship clash at the bet365 Stadium

Stoke claimed their first home league win since the start of March as they climbed off the bottom of the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Fulham.

Goals from strikers Tyrese Campbell and Lee Gregory (penalty) did the damage as Nathan Jones' side claimed back-to-back league victories for the first time since he took charge in January.

Campbell fired home a fine 16th-minute effort and then strike-partner Gregory scored from the spot with 10 minutes remaining after substitute Scott Hogan was fouled by 'keeper Marcus Bettinelli.

Bettinelli had made a string of fine saves to thwart the hosts, but was made to pay for felling Hogan late on as the Potters wrapped up a welcome win to delight their suffering supporters.

Fulham had plenty of the possession in the opening quarter of an hour but the visitors succumbed to a sucker-punch to go behind.

A routine goal-kick from 'keeper Adam Federici was headed on by Gregory and Campbell held off his marker to slot into the bottom-left corner.

It was Campbell's first goal of the season and first since April last season having been used mainly as a substitute this season.

Having impressed in a battling 2-1 away win over Swansea before the international break, Campbell clearly was not going to squander only his second league start of the season.

The home team could have easily doubled their lead 10 minutes later after another measured counter-attack.

Gregory was again the provider, teeing up skipper Joe Allen on the penalty spot.

But midfielder Allen's powerful right-foot shot was excellently saved by Bettinelli, diving outstretched to his left.

Goalscorer Campbell nearly had a second just after the half hour but Fulham somehow held on.

Campbell's initial close-range shot was well saved by Bettinelli, despite the 'keeper slipping as the striker raced down on goal.

But Campbell got to his feet and unleashed a second shot which defender Alfie Mawson brilliantly blocked almost on his own goal-line.

Allen nearly scored for Stoke inside the opening minute of the second half but his point-blank effort from Gregory's cross was kept out by Bettinelli.

Parker unhappy after Fulham lose at Stoke

Fulham boss Scott Parker admitted his side were poor in both boxes in their 2-0 defeat at Stoke.

A second-half miss by Bobby Decordova-Reid proved costly for the Whites, who were unbeaten in their previous six games.

"We defended poorly and weren't clinical enough when we had our moments," Parker said.

"We've got Luton on Wednesday, which a big game for us, and then Middlesbrough. So we go again."

Tyrese Campbell gave Stoke the lead just after the quarter-hour mark and Lee Gregory netted a late penalty soon after Fulham should have equalised.

Teenage forward Campbell capitalised on hesitant Whites defending to slot home the opener and would have scored again but for a fine save from keeper Marcus Bettinelli.

Fulham were poor but should have drawn level when Decordova-Reid, in acres of space, headed straight at keeper Adam Federici.

And there was no way back for Fulham once Gregory scored from the spot after Bettinelli had brought down former Brentford man Scott Hogan.

Midfielder says he could've joined Fulham in January – Now focused on 'revenge' at new club

Sampdoria midfielder Andrea Bertolacci has admitted he could have joined Fulham in the January transfer window.

The midfielder joined Sampdoria on a free transfer this summer after being released by AC Milan at the beginning of July.

He's looking to kick-start his career at the Serie A side having fallen out of favour at Milan, where he managed just 52 appearances in four years at the club.

So far his time at Sampdoria has not been a happy one, with them bottom of the table with just three points from their first seven games.

That's seen a change in management, with Claudio Ranieri brought in this week to try and save the club from a relegation battle.

It's not the first time Ranieri has been brought to a club to do such a job, with him given the same task when he joined Fulham midway through last season.

He's now linking up with Bertolacci at Sampdoria, but it seems the pair could have been working together sooner had things turned out differently.

"Ranieri's come in, and we hope he can guide us towards our objective, which is survival," he told Sky Sports, relayed by Football-Italia.

"It's true that he wanted me at Fulham: there was the possibility in January, but it didn't go through.

"Now, after a difficult year, I have a great desire for revenge."

Transfers that shook the club: Edwin van der Sar's arrival at Craven Cottage as Fulham staged massive coup

In our Transfers that shook the club feature, Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at deals that many may not have seen coming and the impact that they had during their time by using statistical data and pundit remarks.

If you thought that the transfer market was crazy enough these days, this swoop could still take some beating. Having been ousted at Juventus, Champions League winner and Dutch international Edwin van der Sar turned up at little old Fulham over 18 years ago.

Of course, there was nothing 'little' about Fulham back then – they had just joined the big-time, in their first top-flight appearance for 33 years – thanks in no small part to the funding of former chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed.

While more eyebrow-raising additions at Craven Cottage include the undeniably bizarre homage to Michael Jackson, it would be understandable to label Van der Sar's arrival as a massive statement of intent from a newly promoted Premier League side.

And boy, did it work – with Al Fayed's millions, Van der Sar's clean sheets and a fair few goals from Louis Saha marking the start of a 13-season stay in the English top flight.

So what was a decorated, full international goalkeeper like him doing at Craven Cottage? Well, with Gianluigi Buffon's arrival at Juventus ushering Van der Sar out the exit door, the Dutchman was impressed by the 'ambition' of the club, with Fulham breaking their transfer record twice inside 24 hours as Jean Tigana took to assembling their squad for the new season.

Van der Sar may not have been the Whites' only incoming that summer – Fulham forked out a whopping £45.5m on new transfers as they set their sights on becoming Premier League regulars. While it worked, with the likes of Steed Malbranque and Luis Boa Morte guiding Fulham to a 13th-place finish on their Premier League debut, no player on Fulham's roster could have arguably had the presence of the multiple Eredivisie champion.

Having gone on to claim further glories at Manchester United, it was clear that Van der Sar had been ambitious himself by joining Fulham. And although he was not even their most expensive signing that summer (that honour going to £15.8m Steve Marlet), there is little to argue against the 6ft 6in Netherlands international standing out as Fulham announced themselves in a big way.
