England Call-Up For Laura

Fulham FC Foundation walking football participant Laura Strong has been selected to represent England against Wales in the first ever Women's walking football game. The game will be hosted in Wales at Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday 2nd November.

Laura attends the Fulham FC Foundation's walking football and sporting memories session every Friday at Elmbridge Leisure Centre. She was one of the first women to join FFCF's walking football programme, which is delivered through the Cohen66 fund, and she told us how much it has grown since its inception: "The programme has evolved massively since I started playing with the Fulham Foundation back in April last year. Every week new players join up and attend weekly sessions based at various locations, both male and female.

"Specifically for women who may have stopped playing team sports to bring up a family or focus on a career, walking football fills that void and resurrects the benefits of team/club spirits and builds up self-esteem. It reaches out to all levels of ability, and who knew walking football would be so good for cardiovascular fitness!"

FFC Foundation walking football coach, Mark Blythe, had this to say about Laura's international call up: "When Laura joined, she was relatively new to the game but took to it with a determination to learn and improve every week. In the early days of the sport she had one-to-one coaching and she joined in with the boys to help her development & now plays at least three times a week. It's been brilliant to see her dramatic improvement, and her enthusiasm for the game has encouraged many others to join in. I'm delighted that she has received the well-deserved call up for the England team to play Wales. Very proud of you Laura, you deserve it."

The Fulham walking football programme was initially established through Cohen66 campaign funding and is now a fully sustainable programme that has been running for three years in multiple locations. If you would like to give walking football a try, get in touch with the team at Fulham FC Foundation via: [email protected].

U23 REPORT: Lads lose out to Fulham

Fulham U23s 4-0 Sunderland U23s

Sunderland under-23s fell to defeat at the hands of an experienced Fulham side in the Premier League 2 on Friday.

The lads were made to pay by Fulham for a handful of missed chances in the second half, in an afternoon where the outcome could have been different on the balance of play.

First half goals from Ben Davis and Fabio Carvalho gave the hosts a clear advantage at the interval, and a further goal from Carvalho and one right at the death from Luca De La Torre gave Fulham the victory.

The contest was played in blustery conditions at the Cottagers' Motspur training ground, in what was the lads' second trip to the capital this season.

Andrias Edmundsson made his first Premier League 2 start of the season, coming in for the suspended Brandon Taylor in the heart of defence.

Fulham dominated possession in the early stages, but created little to test Anthony Patterson from open play.

And it required a set piece to break the deadlock in the ninth minute; Sunderland failed to clear a corner that landed at the feet of Davis, who fired home from 10-yards.

The lads responded positively to going behind though, first Ruben Sammut dragged wide from the edge of the area.

And then Williams Kokolo and Lee Connelly interchanged down the left, but the former couldn't quite get the ball under control and the opportunity went begging.

The lads were dealt a sucker-punch right on the stroke of half time, Carvalho wriggled his way into the box and fired a low shot in off the post to double Fulham's lead.

Sunderland wasted no time in stepping things up a gear in the second half, Jack Bainbridge was just unable to get on the end of Dan Neil's whipped in free kick.

Before Kokolo breezed past his marker down the right, but his dangerous cross deflected into the hands of Taye Ashby-Hammond.

Connelly had a golden opportunity to half the deficit midway through the second period, after a free-flowing move, Edmundsson stepped in and fed the ball to the striker, but his shot went agonisingly wide for the lads.

Moments later Connelly had another opportunity to set up an exciting final 15 minutes; Owen Gamble curled in a deep cross towards the striker, but he headed over from inside the six-yard box with the goal gaping.

But the lads were made to pay for the missed chances 10 minutes from time, Carvalho raced in behind the defence and slotted home to grab his second.

And Sunderland were dealt another blow one minute from time, De La Torre slotted low into the net to seal the three points for the Cottagers and leave Sunderland ruing their missed chances.

Fulham: Taye Ashby-Hammond, Cody Drameh, Jayden Sweeney, Tayo Edun, Zico Asare, Jayden Mundle-Smith, Jayden Harris, Ben Davis, Martell Taylor-Crossdale, Fabio Carvalho, Luca De La Torre

Subs: Luca Ashby-Hammond, Sonny Hilton, Ryan De Havilland, Ben Tricker, Timmy Abraham

Sunderland: Anthony Patterson, Owen Gamble, Kane Evans, Dan Neil, Jack Bainbridge, Andrias Edmundsson, Lee Connelly, Bali Mumba, Cieran Dunne, Ruben Sammut, Williams Kokolo

Subs: Michael Collins, Ahmed Abdelkader, Nathan Greenwood, Jack Connolly, Ryan Leonard

Joe Bryan underlines positive aspect of Fulham's weekend draw

Fulham defender Joe Bryan took to Instagram yesterday after his side's 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough in the Championship on Saturday.

Scott Parker's Fulham were lucky to come away from the Riverside with a point on Saturday, after goalkeeper Marek Rodak was sent off midway through the first-half.

A point means they stay 7th in the Championship, a point off Bristol City in 6th.

Yesterday, Joe Bryan posted this message to his Instagram:

It was Fulham's fourth clean sheet of the campaign on Saturday, with Marcus Bettinelli coming off the bench to help his side to a point.

Fulham though have now drawn five of their last nine matches in the Championship, having won six of their opening 14 games of the season.

After a 2-0 loss to Stoke City the weekend before last, Parker's tenure at Fulham came under slight scrutiny.

But he put critics to bed with a 3-2 win against Luton Town last week, and his side were expected to kick-on at Boro and force their way into the play-off places.

It didn't pan out the way that Parker and Fulham fans would've hoped though, and they'll look to put things right with the visit of Hull City this weekend.

Hull will make the trip into the capital on the back of a fine 2-0 win against Derby County at the weekend, and Grant McCann's side will prove to be another tough test for Fulham.

A win though could see Fulham climb as high as second in the Championship depending on the result of the West London derby tonight, in what is a close-knit table after 14 games of the campaign.

Man of the Match Result

Aleksandar Mitrović has been named Man of the Match for his battling display at the Riverside Stadium.

The striker usually wins these accolades for his goal scoring exploits, but he showed a different side to his game on Saturday as 10-man Fulham dug in for a valuable point and clean sheet on the road.

Including stoppage time, the Whites went 80 minutes with fewer players than Middlesbrough, but a gritty performance from the entire team meant we brought a positive result back to London with us.

Being a man light increased the defensive responsibilities throughout the team, with Mitrović more than happy to begin that line of defence up front.

Constantly hassling the Boro centre-backs and holding the ball up to magnificent effect – often on his own – Mitrović embodied the commitment of everyone in a white shirt at the weekend.

Such was the collective effort, the vote was actually a very close call, with Mitrović's 14.6 per cent placing him marginally ahead of Marcus Bettinelli (12.9) and Alfie Mawson (12.1).

3 things we learned about Fulham following weekend draw

Fulham were made to work extremely hard to salvage a draw from their game this weekend away at Middlesbrough, with the Cottagers having to play a large chunk of the game with ten men due to the dismissal of Marek Rodak after 17 minutes.

The result for Scott Parker's side has helped to continue the strong form which has been shown by the Whites this campaign, with the west Londoners having now tasted just one defeat in their last five Championship games.

With games to come against the likes of Birmingham and Hull City, Parker will surely be confident of his side's chances of continuing their recent strong form as they look to establish themselves as one of the main promotion contenders this season.

Given the manner in which they salvaged a draw this weekend, we have decided to pick out THREE things we learned about Fulham in their game against Middlesbrough....

Defensive solidity

The Whites showed great organisation and solidity at the back against Middlesbrough this weekend to see out the draw in difficult circumstances which arose from Rodak's red card.

Parker ultimately sacrificed attacking midfielder Josh Onomah in order to bring on Marcus Bettinelli, and it was largely a tactical decision which made sense for the Whites as it allowed Bobby Reid and Ivan Cavaleiro to drop back and form a midfield five for the Whites, thus making them harder to break down.

Mitrovic's workrate

One player who really typified the workrate which is demanded by Parker was Aleksandar Mitrovic, who showed a tremendous attitude to continue to press from the front when his side was out of possession during much of the second half as the Whites fought well to claim a point at the Riverside.

Mitrovic also deserves credit for providing a great outlet when the Cottagers regained possession of the ball, with the towering Serb holding the ball up well and bringing others into play, whilst also making runs down the channels, which allowed the Cottagers to get up the pitch.

Still created attacking chances

Despite being a man light, the Whites still managed to create some good goal scoring chances during the contest, with Mitrovic having been guilty of not providing the finishing touch to Joe Byran's brilliant whipped cross during the closing stages of the game at the Riverside as Fulham showed great determination to attempt to steal three points.

The fact that the Whites registered a total of seven shots is testament to the work that Parker has done with his side in terms of chance creation, with the Cottagers having shown their scoring touch well for much of the campaign so far, finding the net on 23 occasions already.

Talking Points: Middlesbrough

Here's what we're talking about following Fulham's hard fought draw up at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

1. Pride

Anyone who took in our post-match reaction on FFCtv will have seen that the overriding emotion in the Fulham dressing room was pride. Both Scott Parker and Marcus Bettinelli commented on the manner in which we left Teesside with a hard-earned draw, with Parker going as far to say it's the proudest he's even been of the side.

2. Sympathy for Onomah

Josh Onomah has waited patiently for his chance in the First Team, and after a number of cameos from the bench he was given a starting berth at the Riverside Stadium. But when Marek Rodák was dismissed with just 17 minutes on the clock, poor Josh was the unfortunate individual who had to be sacrificed to make way for Marcus Bettinelli.

3. Longest journey done

With Middlesbrough away ticked off, our longest journey this season is now behind us. Fans who drove on Saturday would have clocked up more than 500 miles all in!

4. New chance for Betts

Bettinelli said after the game that he'd had no complaints with Parker's decision to go with Rodák, as he himself didn't think he'd been performing at the level he's capable of. But with Rodák now serving a one-match ban following his dismissal, Bettinelli will be keen to put in the sort of display against Hull City at the weekend which will see him keep hold of the gloves.

5. Return of the clean sheet

Fulham's disciplined performance was well deserving of the clean sheet that it provided, and it means we have only conceded 14 goals in 14 fixtures. It was, however, our first shutout in a month – since the home win over Wigan Athletic – and Parker will be hoping plenty more are on the horizon.

No Goals Against After Playing Over 70% Of Match With Ten Men Proves A Vital Point

Fulham manager Scott Parker praised his team following their 0-0 result at Middlesbrough having played 73+ minutes with ten men.

Goalkeeper Rodak was shown the red card for a handball outside his box after just 17 minutes. The Cottagers were forced to haul off the unlucky Onomah for goalie Bettinelli.

For the first time this season Fulham surrendered the better share of possession 56% to 44%, and with a man short, still managed to keep Boro out and finish the match with just their fourth clean sheet of the season.

There must be a message somewhere in this result for Parker to learn from.

We can (with enough hard work and defensive back-up) pick up vital points without always having to have the lion's share of the ball.

I am fully aware that Middlesbrough have not been finding it easy so far this season in racking up their goal tally, but to keep any Championship team from scoring at home playing almost the entire match with a man short, must give us all some heart. In fact, if Mitro had not missed a sitter by heading wide from close range, we may have even come home with all three points.

arker must be prepared to sometimes allow the opposition a bit more of the ball by defending when necessary in numbers. We have the players that can attack at speed, but the ball must be moved much quicker forwards, not sideways and backwards. We are so often caught out by opposition on the break, which is where most of our goals against have come. Most top managers build their teams starting from the back. A strong defence and goalkeeper is the first stage. If you keep a clean sheet that is at least one point per match.

We have brought in some good players this season, which is why we were bookies favourites with Leeds for automatic promotion. This is still possible, as the leaders seem to be changing week after week. There are no clear runaway teams like Wolves two seasons ago. Every team are able to beat any other team at present. With the right tactics, Fulham could be the team
that make a break away from the rest in the second half of the season if Parker gets his tactics right, by ensuring there is always cover defensively, and we move the ball much quicker in an offensive manner.

If the inclusion of central defender Michael Hector helps stabilise our defence come the New Year, and we can build from where we are now, there is no reason why we should not be able to secure an automatic promotion place come next May.

What do you think Fulham need to do to achieve promotion this season?

Fulham's 27-y/o will surely be upbeat after teammate's weekend drama

This article is part of Football League World's 'Player view' series, this content strand is where we put ourselves in the shoes of a given player, and offer an opinion-based outlook on the perspective on the situation at hand...

Scott Parker's Fulham managed to stay strong and secure a hard fought point from their away game at Middlesbrough this weekend, after the Cottagers were forced to see out almost three quarters of the game with ten men following  goalkeeper Marek Rodak's red card in the 17th minute.

With the Slovakian shot stopper having been given his marching orders for handling the ball outside the penalty area, it allowed Marcus Bettinelli to once again remind Parker of his obvious talents between the sticks, with the 27-year-old having kept yet another clean sheet for the Whites.

The former Accrington Stanley man has recently lost his place in the starting eleven to his younger deputy Rodak, with the experienced shot stopper having previously started all twelve of Fulham's Championship games, meaning that it came as a surprise to see the keeper dropped in favour of Rodak against Boro.

When looking into Bettinelli's statistics so far this term, it is perhaps more clear as to why Parker made the decision to drop the 27-year-old for this weekend's game, as he has only averaged 0.2 saves in the six yard box and 1.1 saves in the penalty area this season, thus underlining that he hasn't commanded his penalty area well enough.

With Rodak now having to serve a suspension for his red card this weekend, Bettinelli will surely be hopeful of reclaiming his spot as Fulham's first team goalkeeper in the coming games for the Whites, particularly with his manager having largely placed faith in his abilities for much of this season.

The goalkeeper will also be looking to improve his own individual performances this term, with a number of his showings having left much of the Craven Cottage faithful questioning his suitability for the role of number one this season, particularly after Bettinelli was only gifted just seven appearances in last season's ill-fated Premier League campaign.

With games to come against the likes of Hull and Birmingham, who both favour a direct style of play that focuses on creating chances from in-direct set pieces, both matches will provide good opportunites for the 27-year-old to showcase his ability to dominate the penalty area, which has been largely lacking from his game this term.

The ball is now firmly in Bettinelli's court with Rodak sidelined, so it is now up to the Fulham stalwart to showcase the kind of form, which contributed to Fulham's promotion in the 2017/2018 season once more, as the Whites look to repeat the feat once again this term.

Leicester and Watford among clubs keeping tabs on David Alaba's cousin Ronald Sobowale as striker is handed trial by Middlesbrough

Leicester City and Watford among clubs interested in striker Ronald Sobowale
He is the cousin of the Bayern Munich and Austria star David Alaba
Sobowale, a prolific scorer in non-league, is currently on trial at Middlesbrough
He was a contemporary of Tammy Abraham and Dominic Solanke at Chelsea

Leicester City and Watford are among the clubs tracking Ronald Sobowale - the cousin of Bayern Munich star David Alaba.

Striker Sobowale, who has been in prolific form for non-league club Whyteleafe this season, is currently on trial with Championship club Middlesbrough.

But a host of clubs in the top two divisions are monitoring the 22-year-old's progress with West Bromwich Albion and Fulham also interested.

Ronald Sobowale, the cousin of Bayern Munich star David Alaba, is on trial at Middlesbrough

Sobowale (right), pictured with Alaba, is being watched by a number of Premier League and Championship clubs including Leicester City and Watford

Sobowale's father is the brother of Austria international Alaba's father and London-born Sobowale is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Bayern left-back.

He was a contemporary of Tammy Abraham and Dominic Solanke in the youth ranks at Chelsea before being released at the age of 15.

He has since developed into a speedy and powerful forward now looking to secure a professional contract after scoring 10 goals in 11 matches for Whyteleafe, of the Bet Victor South East League.

Leicester and Watford have noticed Sobowale's scoring exploits but Middlesbrough have moved quickly to give him a chance to show what he can do.

During an earlier trial at Cardiff City, Sobowale scored the winning goal in a 1-0 friendly win over MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.

He has also impressed scouts who have attended #BENEXT showcase matches staged by the AG Football Academy based in west London. In one, he scored twice against Brentford's B team in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Middlesbrough have also taken another stand-out player from the #BENEXT showcase, Evangelos-Nikalaos Empochontsif, on trial with the prospect of a professional deal.

Fulham's most important result came on the weekend as they showed forgotten attribute: Comment

This article is part of Football League World's 'Comment' series, this content strand is where the author of the article issues their personal opinion on the topic at hand...

Fulham were involved in quite an intriguing match on Saturday, despite the scoreline finishing goalless.

The Cottagers travelled up to Middlesbrough in a positive mood having beaten Luton at Craven Cottage in midweek.

However, they didn't get off to the best of starts at the Riverside Stadium as Marek Rodak was sent off after just 17 minutes of the fixture. This meant that Scott Parker's side had to bring off Josh Onomah for substitute keeper Marcus Bettinelli.

It was meant to be a crucial moment in the match, but Fulham produced something that they have found hard to do in past weeks and that was come out with an impressive defensive performance that showed that they do have resilience in their side.

Parker would have been absolutely delighted with the way his side went about their business and were able to claim a well earned draw with just ten men on the pitch.

The best part about the point was that his side didn't need to hang on, and never looked uncomfortable under pressure or when they weren't in possession of the football.

This is a characteristic that many have not seen at Fulham over the past few years. Even in their promotion season, they had a tendency to concede a lot of goals and the same was happening this campaign, but the defence would have had an almighty confidence boost after that display and the resilience shown.

This could well be a massive turning point in their season, and could seriously push them on to go and get promotion to the Premier League. It's the type of result that would give belief to the whole squad and especially the backline.

Yes, Middlesbrough haven't been great so far this season, but in this division playing with ten men can be near impossible but Parker managed to allow his side to play like they had 11 which he should be credited for.

The manager also brought on Anthony Knockaert in the second-half which showed that he wasn't happy to sit with just a point in the fixture.

If Fulham are to make an immediate return to the Premier League, then they need more results like this and have to keep this defensive resilience and confidence in the coming weeks.
