The 28-y/o Fulham man who has been an unsung hero for far too long: Comment

This article is part of Football League World's 'Comment' series, this content strand is where the author of the article issues their personal opinion on the topic at hand...

Scott Parker has got his Fulham side playing some brilliant football this season, with the former West Ham midfielder encouraging his players to adopt an expansive, possession-based style of play that has seen the Cottagers into seventh place after 14 games this term.

Much of the credit for their performances and subsequent league position has been attributed to the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Tom Cairney, who have both been in sparkling form for the Whites so far, however, there are certainly a few more names who deserve to have their name in the limelight.

One player in particular who we feel has been underappreciated for far to long at Craven Cottage is Norwegian midfielder Stefan Johansen, who has been with the club since the 2016/2017 season, since arriving from the current Scottish champions Celtic.

The deep-lying playmaker provides a crucial component of Parker's system of play as he acts as a pivot in the centre of the park, dropping deep to collect the ball off either Alfie Mawson or Tim Ream, before turning and either driving forward into space or picking out a forward pass to start attacks.

This is a role that the 28-year-old has really grown accustomed too since moving to the west London based club, with the midfield lynchpin having turned out for the Whites on over 100 occasions, scoring 21 goals and assisting a further 20 in the process, thus underlining his creative qualities.

When breaking down the Norwegian's passing statistics, which are provided by WhoScored.com, it is clear that the player's passing game has been superb since Parker has deployed him in various positions in midfield, with the 28-year-old averaging 40.1 passes per game, yielding a pass success rate of 90.5%, in the Championship this term.

The experienced midfield man deserves a lot of his credit for the shift that he puts in for his side, which is shown by the fact that he has already contributed two assists this term, despite playing in a more withdrawn role, which will no doubt have been helped by the fact that the midfielder averages 1.2 key passes per game.

Whilst he can keep the play moving with short, sharp passes, Johansen also possess the ability to switch the play quickly by playing long, raking balls out to the flanks to the likes of Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert, who can often be found to be high and wide on the flanks throughout games.

What is clear from this breakdown, is that without the influence that Johansen brings to the side, Fulham's possession game would struggle to function as he is the man who starts the passing based attacks which the Whites have been praised for so much this season.

Sheffield United: 'All-round midfielder' - The statistics that show Oliver Norwood has seized his Premier League chance after missing opportunity with Manchester United, Brighton and Fulham
These are the statistics that suggest Sheffield United midfielder Oliver Norwood has seized his Premier League chance after previously missing the opportunity with Manchester United, Brighton and Fulham.

The midfielder won his third promotion in as many years to the top flight earlier this year with United, after previously helping Brighton and Fulham into the Premier League.

But remarkably, Norwood had not played a minute of top-flight football until he made his Premier League debut on the opening day of this season with United.

Previously of Manchester United, Norwood was released in 2012 and played for Huddersfield Town and Reading before signing for Brighton.

These statistics, shared by Twitter account The Bladesman, show Norwood has grasped his Premier League chance – and is determined not to lose it.

"We don't want this to be a one-season thing," Norwood said. "We don't want to say we've played against all these teams and it was a one-off. We want Premier League football to stay at Bramall Lane, year after year.

"It maybe took a few games for us to get used to the level, because we're up against world-class players. But we've found our feet now, I think, and we're looking up, not behind.

"We're looking up, not behind. Seeing who we can catch. That's just the mentality of the gaffer and these players. How far can we take it?

"These players we're playing against, they've got two arms and two legs haven't they? They're only human. Transfer fees and wages are irrelevant when it's 11 v 11, man against man. It's about winning your individual battles and in the majority of games, we've managed to do that. If anything, we're a bit disappointed that we haven't got even more points.

"But we're only looking forward. We want to establish this club in the Premier League for many years to come, and give the fans the club they deserve."

Why Hull City must recall Tom Eaves to starting XI against Fulham

Peter Swan says the striker has to be given a recall this Saturday

The obvious thing to do when you're on a roll is stick with what's working. I'm all for that and I'd like to see minimal changes to Hull City for the trip to Fulham, save for just one up front.

It's time to recall Tom Eaves up top at Craven Cottage with Jarrod Bowen reverting to his more usual wing role.

Bowen did a good job against the Rams, but it was when moving back out wide that he came up with the two goals and when you go to a team like Fulham, you need an outlet up top who can hold the ball up for you.

Eaves is that man, Bowen isn't. Head coach Grant McCann isn't a long ball type of manager and we know City won't play that tactic, but if you come under pressure you need that option sometimes and Eaves provides that.

He may not have been scoring, but his play in holding up the ball, in giving opposition defenders something to worry about and in linking up play has been solid and he'll do that job well at Fulham.

With Jon Toral playing off Eaves, and Bowen out wide with Kamil Grosicki, you've got plenty of attacking threats at your disposal, while also having that ability if under pressure to get your foot on the ball and slow things down a little.

Toral could be key to any City success. The Tigers will look to play through him and he's done well since coming back into the side, but we've seen this before from him and then he's fallen away again.

He needs to show a level of consistency because if he can play well for 90 minutes then City have another major asset.

He's the type of player that you would pay to go watch when he's on form, that's how good he can be. Now let's see it regularly because if he does that McCann will have an even more dangerous team.

The defender now showing his worth for Fulham: Comment

Fulham will be hoping to climb the Championship table when they take on Grant McCann's Hull City this Saturday at Craven Cottage, following on from their draw to Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium last weekend.

Fulham manager Scott Parker may have felt that the result against Jonathan Woodgate's side was not positive in the grand scheme of things.

However, after Marek Rodak's red card in the 17th minute of the contest, the Fulham boss may look back on the result as a point gained, regardless of Boro's position in the table.

Although it is Scott Parker's first job in football management, the pressure will be on him to get The Cottagers back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, especially with the talent at his disposal.

On paper, Fulham have one of the best sides in the Championship, and have retained a lot of the players that represented the club in the Premier League last season.

One of those players is left-back Joe Bryan, who signed from the club last summer from Bristol City for a fee of £6 million.

The Robins academy graduate had a baptism of fire in his first season in West London, as Fulham had a difficult season in the Premier League last term, their first back in the top flight since the 2013-14 season.

ulham amassed just 26 points and seven wins as they were relegated back to the Championship. Fulham's poor form and managerial changes throughout the season prevented the side from showing their true quality, and that included Bryan.

The left-back provided just one assist all season, from 2,350 minutes of football, which is a poor return.

However, Bryan is an experienced Championship player, having represented Bristol City in six campaigns in the second tier. He has surpassed his assist tally from last season with three, and has also scored once.

More importantly, the contribution that he offers his side defensively is clear – he has made 43 successful tackles in the fourteen games he has played for Fulham this season.

In addition to that, the defender has made 16 key passes this season, which are likely to have led to goal-scoring opportunities.

WhoScored currently rank Bryan as the second best player in the division, behind Ebere Eze. The 26-year-old's average rating is 7.45/10.

The stats prove that Bryan is one of the best in the league at this moment in time, and Fulham need to continue to use that to their advantage.

Tackling Pyrotechnics

On the eve of next week's Guy Fawkes celebrations, Fulham FC and all other EFL member Clubs are again alerting supporters to the dangers surrounding the use of pyrotechnics within football grounds.

Any instances of pyrotechnics use means innocent parties may be at risk of serious injury as a result.

With a full schedule of fixtures across the Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two set to take place this weekend, ahead of Bonfire Night, the EFL and its Clubs are re-issuing their commitment to tackling the use of pyrotechnics, which includes smoke bombs, flares and fireworks within EFL football grounds.

Having launched in November 2017 all EFL Clubs have signed up to a 'Club Charter on Pyrotechnics', with a commitment to taking strong and decisive action against any fans found attempting to bring a banned item into a ground, or those who discharge pyrotechnics.

Any supporter that has been, or found to be, in breach of the terms of the Charter is subject to a minimum three-season Club ban. A number of Club bans have already been issued since the launch of the Charter, including an increase in Club bans for away supporters due to the ongoing co-operation between EFL Clubs.

Clubs are permitted the flexibility to reduce the length of the Club ban should an offender recognise the danger of their actions, although the overall safety of supporters is always paramount.

Fulham Football Club would therefore like to remind all supporters that the use of any pyrotechnic device is strictly prohibited within Craven Cottage and strong action will be taken in the event of any such devices being discharged.

We'd like to thank all supporters, home and away, for their ongoing cooperation in this matter, so we can all enjoy the game in safety.
