Parker On Rodák

Scott Parker was pleased with Marek Rodák's performance between the sticks at Birmingham City.

After serving a suspension during our defeat by Hull City, the 22-year-old was restored to the starting lineup for the trip to the Midlands, and played a key role in securing a vital clean sheet.

"He did really well," Parker said of his goalkeeper. "A young boy who's come in and pulled off some good saves.

"He's had vast experience in the league, although he's young, he's played a lot of games at Rotherham last year, and I have full confidence in Marek.

"He's got character, he's got something about him, and when you're a 'keeper you need that.

"I'm fortunate enough to have both of them – [Marcus] Bettinelli and him. They're both very good 'keepers.

"At this present moment in time he's got the shirt. [But] I know for sure, when I talk about character, that there's someone behind him in Bettinelli who's got plenty of that and will push, and push, and push.

"Like I said, I'm in a very fortunate position to have two such good 'keepers."

The tactical tweak that could pay off for Fulham against QPR: Comment

This article is part of Football League World's 'Comment' series, this content strand is where the author of the article issues their personal opinion on the topic at hand...

Scott Parker will have been delighted with the manner in which Fulham claimed their 1-0 away victory at Birmingham City last weekend, with Aleksandar Mitrovic's solitary strike proving the difference between the two sides.

The win meant that the Cottagers closed the gap on the play-off places to two points, meaning it is fair to say that the west London club have performed well but still have room for improvement in some areas.

One particular blow which will give Parker something to think about is the fact that Mitrovic picked up a booking during the game at St Andrew's, meaning that the Serbian international will be missing for the West London derby against QPR, when both teams return from the international break.

The absence of their top scorer obviously leaves the former West Ham midfielder with a decision to make on who to start up top against their city rivals.

The choices are limited to just two, with Aboubakar Kamara and Bobby Reid being the only other recognised strikers within the Fulham squad, leaving Parker with a dilemma.

The most likely candidate to get the nod for the game against QPR is Reid, with the ex-Bristol City man capable of operating as a lone striker, whereas Kamara in comparison thrives more off playing in a front two.

Bringing Reid into the lone striking role will allow Fulham to have an outlet from which they can play through, with the 26-year-old capable of dropping deep to link the play, whilst also having the pace to make runs in behind the opposition defence.

Reid has so far failed to get off the mark for the Whites since arriving at Craven Cottage during the summer, and this upcoming fixture would provide the ideal opportunity for the striker to make a good impression in the lone striking berth.

He should get some joy against a R's defence that has been prone to conceding goals on the counter-attack in more recent times, with the likes of Toni Leistner and Geoff Cameron lacking any real pace, meaning that the ball in behind will always be a good option for Fulham's midfielders to play for Reid.

Although Reid is able to create chances for himself, Parker will also be keen for his more advanced midfielders and, in turn, his wingers to support the lone frontman by positioning themselves close to the 26-year-old, as this will help to create overloads for the Whites in the final third.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the Cottagers cope without the services of Mitrovic, with the 25-year-old having proved crucial for the west Londoners so far.

Scott Parker reacts to Marek Rodak's performance for Fulham v Birmingham

Scott Parker has praised Fulham goalkeeper Marek Rodak for his impressive performance against Birmingham on Saturday.

Rodak kept a vital clean sheet as the Cottagers managed to come away from St. Andrew's with a much needed three points on the weekend.

Parker's side haven't been in top form so far in this current campaign, and have suffered heavy defeats to both Stoke and Hull in recent weeks.

This was an important victory, and shows that Parker's squad have the morale and ability in order to bounce back from adversity. A trait that is vital if you're looking to earn promotion from the Championship.

Parker has expressed that Rodak was brilliant in the fixture, and that he's got a bit of character about himself.

Speaking to Fulham's official website, Parker said: "He (Rodak) did really well. A young boy who's come in and pulled off some good saves.

"He's had vast experience in the league, although he's young, he's played a lot of games at Rotherham last year, and I have full confidence in Marek.

"He's got character, he's got something about him, and when you're a 'keeper you need that."

The Verdict

Rodak was very impressive on Saturday, and that will delight Parker after the defence had looked shaky in previous weeks. He'll need everyone playing to full potential if the Cottagers are to have any chance of returning to the top-flight in this current campaign.

They've had a topsy-turvy start, and there's a lot of games where they look simply brilliant but in others the defence has been all over the place. If they can improve that aspect, and carry on defending like they did on Saturday, then they'll be strong contenders for a top six finish.

It's always nice to have a strong goalkeeper between the sticks, and that could make all the difference come May.

"He's in pain all the time" – National team manager provides details of Fulham player's injury

Fulham's Stefan Johansen was included in Lars Lagerbäck's Norway squad for the fixtures against Faroe Islands and Malta, but was forced to withdraw last Friday due to injury.

A day later, the midfielder played the entire match for the Cottagers during their 1-0 win over Birmingham City and this left Lagerbäck's assistant Per Joar Hansen surprised.

Hansen had stressed he is unaware why the 28-year-old featured for his club, and said only the Championship side will be able to provide an explanation.

A potential conflict between club and country over player's fitness has now been ruled out after Lagerbäck provided a detailed explanation about Johansen's injury situation.

"For me, there is no fuss. Definitely not. Stefan has a knee problem that needs to be treated medically," the Norway boss told TV2.

"He has been able to play with pain, so the injury would not worsen, but he needs to get treatment and then rest for a few weeks, so for me it is quite natural.

"Last time I talked to Stefan he did not know that he was going to play this weekend, but I have full understanding and respect that the manager considers it best to let him play in the situation they are in. I have full understanding of that decision."

Johansen has been struggling with a knee injury and Lagerbäck stressed the pain hinders the Fulham player from giving his best on the pitch.

When asked if his comments on the Norway captain would send a wrong signal to other players, the Swede said: "No, if you look at Stefan's situation in the long term, then the most important thing for both him and the national team is that he will recover.

"He can't play at 100 percent, he's in pain all the time, so the only opportunity now is to treat the injury. I think they give him a couple of syringes, and then he has to rest for a few weeks.

"We must have an understanding of the club situation, but in the long run it is better that we have a healthy Stefan than he goes around dragging on such damage over a long period of time."

Dickson Etuhu: Ex-Nigeria player guilty of match-fixing in Sweden

Dickson Etuhu played at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria

Former Nigeria international Dickson Etuhu has been found guilty of attempted match-fixing by a Swedish appeals court.

The Court of Appeal in Stockholm said in a release on Wednesday that it was clear that Etuhu and an unnamed former player tried to influence AIK keeper Kyriakos "Kenny" Stamatopoulos to fix a match in Sweden's top division in 2017.

Etuhu, who played for several English clubs including Manchester City, Sunderland, Preston, Blackburn and Fulham, escaped a jail sentence but was instead fined and sentenced to serve probation, without further details being made public.

The 37-year-old, who left AIK Solna in 2016, says he will be appealing against the ruling at the Supreme Court.

The court said that "the content of what the men submitted to the player (Stamatopoulos) was so clear that it should be considered a criminal offer of bribe."

Etuhu had intially been acquitted by a court last year but that was appealed by prosecutor Johan Lindmark, who told local Swedish newspaper Expressen that he was satisfied with Wednesday's outcome.

"It was with satisfaction that I received the verdict today," Lindmark said.

"I had appealed on the grounds that I thought the court of law would change and was not surprised when I saw the verdict."

Etuhu played 20 times for the Super Eagles including twice at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008 and 2010 as well as the World Cup in South Africa.

Euro side on the hunt for key Fulham ace

Serie A club Genoa are chasing the signature of Fulham's top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic with January just around the corner – according to Calciomercato.

Mitrovic is one of the Championship's leading goalscorers this season, having netted 12 goals in 16 appearances for the Cottagers as he's fired them up into the play-off places.

Genoa are currently sat 17th in the Italian top flight with nine points so far this season, and are just out the relegation zone on goals scored with Sampdoria.

The Italian club are thought to be put off from signing the Serbian goal machine however, with Fulham thought to be wanting £17 million for their talisman.

The 25-year-old originally joined Fulham on loan from Newcastle United in January 2018 and scored 12 goals in 20 appearances as the Cottagers won the Championship play-offs, earning promotion to the Premier League before making his deal permanent to Craven Cottage.

Fulham spent one season in the top flight as the Serbian international netted 11 goals in 37 appearances before relegation, and the Serbian has hit the ground running in England's second tier with an excellent goals record this season for the London club.

The Verdict

Mitrovic is a striker who was born to score goals and he would deserve the opportunity to test himself in Italty's top tier, however him going to Europe's best defensive league and to a team that's struggling wouldn't do him any good.

The striker would be better off fighting for promotion back to the Premier League this season with Fulham and then considering his options next summer while he's still in the peak of his powers.

Wolves: Fans want on-loan Ivan Cavaleiro back at Molineux

Many Wolves fans have called for on-loan winger Ivan Cavaleiro to return to the club, with the 26-year-old impressing at Fulham.

The London club's manager Scott Parker sang his praises following the 1-0 win over Birmingham at the weekend, saying that Cavaleiro "has been superb, he gives us what you see in him – he is a match winner on his day". [via Wolves Bite, and shared by @WolvesFC_latest on Twitter]

The two-cap Portugal international joined the Cottagers in July on a season-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the campaign, as reported by BBC.

He has made a telling impact at Craven Cottage, with four goals and four assists in 15 appearances so far this term, having started all but one of their Championship matches. [via TransferMarkt]

His frequent presence in Fulham's line-up is in stark contrast to last season, when he made only six Premier League starts for his parent club.

These Wolves fans on Twitter are hoping that Cavaleiro will return to Molineux when his loan spell at Fulham concludes, with one preferring him to fellow forwards Patrick Cutrone and Pedro Neto:

Injury leaves door open for Fulham man to re-establish himself

An injury suffered to Fulham left-back Maxime Le Marchand in the 1-0 win against Birmingham at St. Andrew's has provided one of their defenders with an unlikely chance of a run in the first team.

That particular player is Cyrus Christie, who came on for the injured Frenchman in the 35th minute of the contest, with Denis Odoi switching duties.

That meant Christie swapped positions with the Belgian, and operated as a right-back, as opposed to the midfield roles he has been occupying so far this season when utilised.

Christie had a decent game, and he can say that he contributed in some part to Aleksandar Mitrovic's eventual winner, although he did not officially get the assist.

The 27-year-old's ball into the box was fumbled by Birmingham goalkeeper Lee Camp, leaving Mitrovic to pounce in the six-yard box for his 12th of the season.

As well as the all-important cross against the Blues, Christie made two successful tackles, won an aerial dual and had a pass completion rate of 79% in the 55 minutes he was on the turf at St. Andrews.

Prior to the game at the weekend, Christie had featured just three times for Fulham previously this season, all off the substitutes bench. He has managed to play 205 minutes of football for the Cottagers this term.

As it is unknown how long Maxime Le Marchand and Joe Bryan will be ruled out for, Christie has to take his chance, and repay the faith shown in him by Scott Parker.

It will likely that the right-back will be involved in some fashion against Queens Park Rangers in the West London derby in nine days time.

As the limelight will be on him in an important fixture, he will be thinking of it as another chance to impress the manager, and hold down the starting spot he had last season, when the club were in the Premier League.

His crossing ability is unquestioned, and Fulham will have to try and use that to their advantage against their rivals next time out, despite usually keeping control of the ball on the floor in large spells so far this season.

He will definitely be as asset to Fulham in the Championship this season, as he has proven himself at this level. It will be up to him to take his chance once again.

Fulham player frustrations showing as lack of form continues

This article is part of Football League World's 'Player View' series, this content strand is where we put ourselves in the shoes of a given player, and offer an opinion-based outlook on the perspective on the situation at hand...

Fulham have had a rather inconsistent start to the season, and Scott Parker's side haven't been at their very best so far.

There's obviously still a long way to go and with expectations high, Parker will be hoping his side can carry on from Saturday's impressive 1-0 away victory at Birmingham and kick on after the international break has passed.

Parker signed a number of different players over the summer, all of which had brilliant Championship experience and had shone at this level in the past. Aleksandar Mitrovic stayed at Fulham, and has been excellent at this level once again as he looks to fire the Cottagers back into the Premier League at the first-time of asking.

However, an injury to Mitrovic could leave Fulham very much under pressure seeing as their other striker, Bobby Reid, is failing to find the net. He's not even just out of sorts, he hasn't yet scored a goal for Parker's side and they'll need him to show more throughout the campaign.

Reid moved from Cardiff in the summer and is a very good player at this level, something he showed on several occasions during his time at Bristol City. However, he's now made 14 appearances for Fulham and is still yet to find a net, so Parker has to make sure that he can offer him confidence when talking one-to-one.

The player himself will be frustrated, and the longer the wait goes on the more it will play on the 26-year-old's mind. He has to try and find the net in the coming games, and hope that Parker also gives him of an opportunity to play matches from the start.

He can't argue with Parker's decision to not play him in the starting lineup though, as so far he hasn't yet been productive when in that situation. It's easy to forget his attacking quality on runs like this, but if Mitrovic was to get injured they need him firing, and at the moment he isn't.
