Fulham star a January 'suggestion' for Serie A side – Would cost a fee 'almost equal to his age'

Aleksandar Mitrovic really likes the Championship, especially with Fulham, as the Serbian striker has played 33 games in England's second division with the Craven Cottage side, and has scored 24 goals.

He did well in the Premier League too, but never quite reached the same heights, finding the back of the net 11 times in 37 appearances last season.

Still, this goalscoring record has caught the eye of a number of teams over time, with the latest being Genoa in Italy, according to PrimoCanale.

The club are looking for some attacking reinforcement in January, and it's stated the Fulham man is a 'suggestion' for the Serie A side, alongside the likes of Anostosis Donis (currently at Reims on loan from Stuttgart) and free agent Hatem Ben Arfa.

As for what he would cost, PrimoCanale explain he would set back Genoa a fee 'almost equal to his age', so since he's 25, we're guessing they mean €25m and not €25.

That's a considerable amount for the Italians, but it would be interesting to see what Fulham would do if presented with that choice.

After all, they spent £22.5m on him in the first place, and this would be a great opportunity to get their money back if they are in a position of need.

Over to you, Genoa.

2 pros & 2 cons of Middlesbrough selling Daniel Ayala as Leeds United, Fulham and Stoke City circle

Speculation regarding Daniel Ayala's future at Middlesbrough looks set to rumble on and on.

The defender is out of contract next summer meaning that he can start to discuss terms with teams around the continent as early as January.

The next transfer window represents the only remaining opportunity for Middlesbrough to command a fee for the Spaniard, who otherwise will be allowed to leave for nothing next summer.

Reports from TeamTalk have claimed that Leeds United, Stoke City and Fulham are all eyeing a move for the 29-year-old, who would be a real coup for one of Middlesbrough's Championship rivals.

While it remains to be see whether Ayala will sign a new contract with the club, there's been plenty of debate over whether the club should look to sell the defender in January.

Here are some of the key positives and negatives to a January sale.

Pro – Recouping a valuable transfer fee

Middlesbrough are in a tricky position as they look to cut their financial cloth accordingly.

The club are looking to avoid buying players for big fees, and as such, transfer funds are deemed to be at a premium.

If Daniel Ayala sees out his contract, Middlesbrough will get nothing for one of their star performers – something which is unthinkable for a club of the size of Middlesbrough.

If the defender is unlikely to stay, then the ability to claim a fee – even if it's only £2-3million, will be a big boost and could go a long way to finding a replacement who fits the mould sought by Jonathan Woodgate.

Pro – Ends a season of uncertainty

We're already in November and the speculation regarding Daniel Ayala's future is already a huge talking point.

Plenty of things are going wrong for Middlesbrough on the pitch, but one thing is for certain and that's that all of this uncertainty can't be helping the player.

Performances on the pitch need to improve, and if it's thought that Daniel Ayala's contract situation is having a negative impact on the squad, then maybe it is best that he moves on.

Con – Losing a crucial player when needed most

There's no questioning that Middlesbrough are struggling for form, and if they're to improve they certainly need all of their experience stars.

Daniel Ayala is the top of that list.

To lose a player of the Spaniard's experience and quality could be a hammer blow to Boro's hopes staying in the Championship, as frankly, there's a real lack of leadership in Jonathan Woodgate's defence already.

Con – Any fee received will be lower than market value

I know it's a case of 'beggars can't be choosers' in this instance, but selling Daniel Ayala on the cheap would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Such is his influence, you could even make a case for saying that Middlesbrough would be better off allowing him to leave at the end of the season, even if only to ensure he is part of Woodgate's team for the second half of the season.

It would mean losing out on a fee, but if Middlesbrough were unable to replace Ayala in January then they would be in big, big trouble.

2 stats Fulham need to work on in the international break

Fulham, as expected, have been one of the Championship's top performers so far this campaign, with Scott Parker having led his side to seven wins from their first 16 games, thus seeing them into seventh place.

The Cottagers have striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to thank for his significant contribution to the cause so far, with the Serbian international having now netted 12 goals this term after scoring a close range finish against Birmingham City last weekend.

Aside from this the Whites have played some brilliant football this season, with Parker putting great emphasis on his side maintaining possession of the ball for long periods, before using Mitrovic as a an outlet from which they can build attacks and create chances for the front three.

Although Fulham's season has been largely successful so far, there are still some areas that Parker will be keen to work on, and as such we have identified TWO statistics that the Whites need to work on in the international break....

Decrease the amount of goals being conceded

Parker will no doubt be looking for his side to tighten things up at the back, with the Cottagers having conceded a rather alarming 17 goals already this campaign, things will have to change if they are to achieve their dreams of promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Fulham like to operate with a high defensive line as this helps them to maintain possession in the opposition half, however this leaves them susceptible to counter attacks, so perhaps Parker could look at asking the likes of Alfie Mawson and Tim Ream to drop deeper when the Whites are in possession to combat this risk.

Goals being contributed from other areas

It's all well and good Mitrovic scoring the goals to keep Fulham in promotion contention, but the Whites boss will surely be looking for his other personnel to contribute more significantly in front of goal, with only Tom Cairney really providing any real support for the Serb in the scoring stakes so far.

The likes of Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert will be expected to improve their current output, as goals from other areas of the team could prove vital for the Cottagers promotion chances this term, particularly if Mitrovic picks up a long-term injury.

Omogbehin's 'Football Black List' Inclusion

We'd like to congratulate joint Under-23s Head Coach Colin Omogbehin who has earned a place on the 'Football Black List'.

The list celebrates African and Caribbean achievement in sport and is split into seven categories including; media, administration, coaching and management, commercial, community, practitioners and Cyrille Regis Players.

He is heavily involved in his own founded initiative 'Junior Elite' which spots the next crop of talent in London, further strengthening his reputation in developing excellence. These players often find their way into Fulham's academy age groups.

Omogbehin is in excellent company, entering alongside the likes of Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Eni Aluko.

After receiving the news, Omogbehin spoke to fulhamfc.com of his pride at being included.

"I felt, proud, excited and very humbled to be included amongst my peers who have done very well in creating black excellence. To be announced in the same breath as them and past winners was a great feeling.

"If you look at the names that have been nominated; these people have done amazing things for the game. Regardless of the nomination, I always want to work hard to try and help these players from a recruitment side and coaching side to get them to be the best they can be."

He continued: "If I can enjoy some of the previous successes I've had in 21 years as a coach both with my grassroots club Junior Elite, my former club Crystal Palace and now Fulham then I'll be very happy.

"Junior Elite stands alone in terms of the players that have passed through the system that will keep the name and history of it alive."

After recent return, Fulham man deserves a run in the first-team: Comment

A 1-0 win at Birmingham City in the Championship last weekend left Fulham in 7th for the international break, staying two points behind Bristol City in the final play-off spot.

It was Aleksandar Mitrovic with his 12th league goal of the season that gave Fulham and Scott Parker a much-needed win on Saturday.

The pressure was on Parker going into the game at St Andrew's. Fulham had just been beaten 3-0 at home to Hull City, having won just one in four going into that game.

It was an accomplished away performance on the day from his side – it was their third win on the road this season and the first time they've kept a clean sheet away from Craven Cottage.

Parker will have plenty to be happy about going into the break, but he faces a tough return to action with three games within a week – QPR and Derby County at home, before a trip to Swansea.

He'll need his players to be well-rested over the break, but one man who's had plenty of rest already this season is Cyrus Christie.

His season started on a bad note when, after his side had lost at Barnsley, he accused two Fulham fans of racially abusing his sister at the game.

Unrelated, he sat the next three games on the bench before making a substitute appearance against Forest, and then starting against Southampton in the Carabao Cup in August – his last appearance for the club since last weekend.

Christie's fitness was called into question but after missing two whole months of football, he made a shock return to the first-team against Birmingham.

He came on in the first-half for the injured Maxime Le Marchland and looked to be back to his best with a solid, physical performance on the right of the defence – he played a big part in setting up Mitrovic for the goal.

With another two weeks rest, Christie will be raring to get back on the pitch after playing on Saturday, and Parker will have been impressed with the Irishman's return.

He gave them a new dynamic on the right – Dennis Odoi has been filling in on the right of the defence and whilst a good team player, Christie's attacking presence makes the team a whole lot more dangerous.

Parker's going to need some extra players with the upcoming fixtures, and expect to see Christie involved as Fulham look to break into the top-six.

Surbiton veteran enjoys visit to Craven Cottage thanks to club and care home

An Iraq war veteran from Surbiton was invited to spend the day at Fulham FC thanks to the club's work with veterans' charity Royal Star and Garter (RSG).

32-year-old Stephen Vause got a front row seat on Saturday (November 9) to watch Championship side Fulham in action against Hull.

He also met with players and staff at the Craven Cottage ground on the banks of the Thames.

The sold-out match was the west London club's official Remembrance match, featuring a memorial for military personnel where wreaths were laid in the centre circle before the kick-off.

The Last Post was also played, and a silence observed ahead of Armistice Day on November 11.

Die-hard Fulham fan Stephen was 19 and on his first tour in Iraq, serving with the 4th Battalion The Rifles, when he suffered brain injuries in a mortar explosion near Basra.

As the Comet reported in September, Stephen was surprised at the Surbiton home when Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald and defender Cyrus Christie dropped in to meet him.

On Saturday, the Surbiton man met forward Bobby Decordova-Reid and Kevin McDonald.

RSG said he was presented with a club scarf and a copy of the match day programme signed by star striker Aleksandar Mitrović.

Stephen later said: "The game was good and I enjoyed it, I am very thankful for the tickets. Next time I go we will win!"

Wolves: Supporters express desire to see Ivan Cavaleiro return to the club

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have expressed their wish to see Ivan Cavaleiro return to the Old Gold from Fulham.

The London club signed the winger during the summer, on a loan move from Molineux with the option to be made permanent should the Cottagers wish (per BBC).

However, following some recent praise of the 26-year-old by Fulham boss Scott Parker (via Wolves Live), supporters expressed the desire to see Cavaleiro return to the midlands.

The right-winger played 106 times in three seasons for Nuno Espirito Santo's side, bagging 19 goals and 20 assists over that duration (per Transfermarkt).

Despite Wolves having brought in replacements for the departed Cavaleiro over the summer (via Transfermarkt), many fans believed the Portuguese winger would be a better option.

What do we think?

The winger is flying in the Championship this season, picking up a 7.3/10 average rating, scoring four and assisting four in 15 league games (per Whoscored).

It is unclear whether Wolves have the option to recall, or if the option to buy is set in stone, but it is clear to see that the Portuguese winger is, undoubtedly, talented.

32 goals for Fulham and Reading – where's Pavel Pogrebnyak now?

The name Pavel 'The Pog' Pogrebnyak will resonate with fans of Fulham and Reading – the Russian striker played for both between 2011 and 2015. But what's he up to these days?

How many times has an unknown striker come into the Premier League, scored a bunch of goals in his first few games and then drop right off? A fair few, and Pogrebnyak falls into that category.

A Moscow-native, 'The Pog' began his career with the local Spartak. He broke into the first-team in the early 2000's as a sprightly, powerful centre-forward and spent three seasons at the club, mostly out on-loan in Russian Football National League, but has his breakthrough with Siberian side Tomsk in 2006.

A prolific season with Tomsk landed him a move to Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg in 2007, where he spent a further two seasons in fine goal-scoring form.

He helped Zenit do the league and UEFA Cup double that season, and won the Russian and UEFA Super Cup against Manchester United in the final the next.

A move to Stuttgart followed, where Pogrebnyak spent three season playing nearly 100 games, and scoring 21 goals.

His third season saw him score just once in 14 Bundesliga games, and he was sold to Fulham on the January deadline day on a short-term contract.

No player has reached five Premier League goals quicker than 'The Pog' – he scored on his debut, in his second game and netted a perfect hat-trick against Wolves in his third.

An instant hit at Craven Cottage, the Russian scored six in 12 games in the second-half of the season and to the displeasure of fans at the time, he failed to reach a new deal with Fulham and left the club at the end of the season.

He was keen to remain in England, and Reading's Brian McDermott signed him on a free.

In the Royals relegation season, Pogrebnyak failed to live up to the hype of his early appearances in the Premier League, scoring five goal as Reading finished 19th.

Unexpectedly he chose to stay in Berkshire and play in the Championship – he scored 13 goals in his first season in the second tier, but only five in the next. He returned to Russia August 2015, signing for Dynamo Moscow.

England had chewed 'The Pog' up and spat him back out. He never found his goal-scoring touch again – midway through his third season at Dynamo, he'd only scored one goal for the club, and was released after he was spotted at a Serie A game the day he was supposed to have a match for Dynamo.

He joined Russian Premier League side Tosno in February 2018 and helped the side to an unprecedented Russian Cup victory and scored three in six games for the club.

He was released at the end of the season though and today, aged 36, is on the book with another Russian top-flight side in FC Ural.

In his second season with the club, he's still very much a prominent figure there seven league appearances so far.

A cult-hero during his time in England, his demise and apparent off-the-pitch attitude towards the game in his later career is sad to read.

But he'll always be remembered by those who saw him play in England.

After impressive showing, Fulham man will have eyes on long-term stay in first-team

Fulham got back to winning ways on the weekend, as they defeated Pep Clotet's Birmingham City by one goal to nil at St Andrew's that lifts them to sixth in the Sky Bet Championship table.

A blunder from Lee Camp in the six-yard box gifted Aleksandar Mitrovic his 12th league goal of the season, in a game which relieved the pressure on Scott Parker after Fulham's poor showing against Hull City in their last match at Craven Cottage.

Although it was Mitrovic that secured the points for the west London side to take back to the capital, another standout player in the side had a fine game, and that was 22-year-old Slovakian goalkeeper Marek Rodak, who kept his first Fulham clean sheet.

Rodak produced a good display, making a number of key saves in the game, with the pick of the bunch an excellent stop to deny Blues left-back Kristian Pedersen in the first half, tipping his effort past the post. In total, Rodak made four key saves in the contest.

It shows Rodak's strength of character to bounce back against Birmingham in the way he did, considering his last game for the Cottagers, where he was sent off against Middlesbrough for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

Scott Parker clearly has confidence in the young stopper, and regular first-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has to try to challenge Rodak for the jersey, to regain his first-team place. Rodak will not want to let it slip from his grasp, as he has been gearing up for it for many seasons.

The Kosice-born stopper has been on Fulham's books since 2013, when he was just fifteen years of age.

Rodak has spent time on loan at Accrington Stanley in League Two, and most recently Rotherham United last season in the Championship, where he featured 45 times as the Millers suffered relegation back to the third tier. He kept six clean sheets for the Yorkshire side last season.

He only made his league debut for Fulham on 23 October, a 3-2 win over Luton Town at Craven Cottage. The good news is that his performance against Birmingham was his most convincing yet in a Fulham shirt. The Slovakian will be hoping to take that into the next game for his club, which is against QPR in the West London Derby in ten days time.

I remember the arrival of The Pog and how many people hailed the new goal scoring machine. Martin Jol who gave the usual shrug when asked for an appraisal said something along the lines "one swallow and a summer". I think we knew what he meant and by golly he was right.

True. Still, he was better than Orlando Sa. I'll never forget him costing us a win in the Europa League.

IMHO, After a good second half of the previous season, when the Pog was offered better terms and took them, that helped to make up the minds of Dempsey and Dembele 1, that they would be better off with more ambitious clubs.
