'Play nice' – BBC journalist shares Robbie Savage reaction to Leeds defeat v Fulham

As soon as Leeds United lose a single game, many like to jump on the bandwagon to suggest that they are falling apart.

Just like the famous chant goes, even the Leeds fans like to get involved to make it some sort of running joke.

Pundits may have started to join in that after Saturday's 2-1 defeat against Fulham, even though the Whites still sit second, eight points clear of the play-offs in the Championship.

BBC journalist Emma Jones revealed on her personal Twitter account that Robbie Savage called her to react to Leeds tasting defeat at Fulham on Saturday.

She shared that the former Derby County midfielder claimed that the Whites have already started to bottle their promotion run, insinuating that they could miss out on the top-two spots once again this season.

"I'm on BBC 606 tonight & Robbie Savage has just called to tell me Leeds are bottling it," she wrote. "If you have any comments you'd like me to pass on, please write them below (play nice)" Jones added.

Leeds fans would certainly disagree with that claim, especially given that the last time they lost a game in the Championship, it sparked the recent 11-game unbeaten run.

Another run like that would get the Whites halfway to the Premier League as we enter the second half of the season on Boxing Day.

Everyone will remember the pain of last season, none more so than Marcelo Bielsa. The best part of the Championship is that there are always chances around the corner to fix any wrongs.

Leeds come up against Preston, West Brom, and Sheffield Wednesday in the next three weeks – all teams in the top six. Stay unbeaten against those teams and that would only extend the gap, and that would be a great confidence boost to the Whites.

Savage loves to get a reaction, and Leeds fans will sit back knowing that the next three weeks could see him proved dramatically wrong... fingers crossed.

Kalvin Phillips echoes criticism of Fulham referee and what Leeds United deserved at Craven Cottage

Last time Leeds lost with a controversial decision, they responded with a long unbeaten run...

Kalvin Phillips has given his reaction to Leeds United's tough to take defeat at Fulham and weighed in on the penalty controversy.

The midfielder follows in the footsteps of club captain Liam Cooper and former Leeds man Michael Brown in questioning referee Tim Robinson's decision to give Fulham an early penalty.

The official judged that Ben White pushed over Bobby Decordova-Reid in the penalty area, but replays subsequently showed contact was minimal. Aleksandar Mitrovic stepped up to score the spot-kick and the Cottagers went on to win 2-1.

"It's quite difficult at the moment, with their first goal," Phillips said, speaking to LUTV.

"There's a lot of controversy about it, but we can't say too much about that.

"Bit sloppy to concede the second but I think overall we did well, we deserved a point at least in the game, possibly three points with the way we attacked."

There are echoes of Leeds United's last defeat, also in London, with Gaetano Berardi's early red card and subsequent penalty hotly disputed in the 2-1 loss to Millwall.

That proved the catalyst for Leeds United's recent 11-game unbeaten run, including seven straight victories, and Phillips hinted that they're targeting something similar now, starting with the Boxing Day fixture at home to Preston North End.

"We won't take this too much to heart," Phillips added.

"We know that we did all we could to take a point at least and obviously we're looking forward to the next game. Hopefully we can start on another good run."

Talking Points: Leeds United

Here's what we're talking about in the aftermath of Fulham's impressive victory over Leeds United.

1. Collective delight for Josh

Sometimes when a player scores their first goal for Fulham, you are especially happy for them – see also Bobby Decordova-Reid versus Derby County – and Josh Onomah was one such example on Saturday. After a difficult start to his career in SW6, Onomah has grown in confidence over the last few matches, and capped another impressive performance with the winning goal. The ball sat up perfectly for him but he still had plenty to do, smashing it with stunning technique through a crowded area and inside the post, nearly busting the net in the process. The reaction of his teammates at that moment – and when he won a goal-kick to effectively see out the game – showed just how valued a member of the side he is.

2. Perfect way to sign off

In front of a sold out Craven Cottage and against one of the division's stand out sides, there was no better way to sign off before Christmas. Morale was understandably low following three straight defeats, but the manner of that return to form puts an entirely different perspective on things going into the festive season, and means we'll enjoy our turkey dinners that little bit more this week.

3. Feather in Parker's cap

Marcelo Bielsa is commonly acknowledged as one of the best tacticians in football, so it's a nice moment for our young Head Coach to come out on top of the first battle between the two. Parker referenced in his post-match press conference the work that had been done to combat Leeds' movements, something that certainly paid dividends at the Cottage.

4. Time to build

With a flurry of fixtures against teams around us complete, we now embark on a run of games against sides below Fulham in the table. 10th and 11th placed Blackburn Rovers and Hull City are the only teams in the top half that we'll face in the next 11 outings, and while we know there are no easy matches at this level, Parker will want his side to use this run to keep building momentum in the promotion charge.

5. Timely returns

Ahead of a busy festive period, several players are making a timely return to fitness. Bobby Decordova-Reid and Harrison Reed both got 90 minutes under their belt against Leeds, whilst Steven Sessegnon also made a late cameo from the bench. The team certainly felt their absence in recent weeks, so the added strength in depth can only boost our chances going into this cluster of fixtures.

3 things we clearly learnt from Fulham's narrow win over Leeds United

Scott Parker will have no doubt been delighted to see his side record a long overdue win as they dispatched fellow promotion chasers Leeds United at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The 2-1 win keeps Fulham firmly in the race for the play-offs as we progress through the Christmas period, with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Josh Onomah scoring the goals to seal the three points in a contest in which the Whites had to withstand an attacking barrage from the visitors.

It was a win which will have come as a relief for Parker, as he saw his side pick up only their second victory in their last five league outings.

The result moves the Cottagers to within nine points of second place Leeds and perhaps gives the west London side some hope of breaking into the race for automatic promotion.

Here, we take a look at THREE things we clearly learnt from Fulham's win over Leeds United this weekend....

Onomah gradually establishing himself
The young midfielder has displayed fine form of late and is certainly well on his way towards becoming a regular starter under Parker at the Championship club.

His well struck effort will do his chances of becoming a key player for the Whites no harm, with the 22-year-old showing that he can add goals to his game, which is something that Parker will be keen to see more of in the coming weeks.

Possession isn't everything
The Whites once again showed that they can win without dominating possession of the ball, with the Cottagers only registering a share of just 35% throughout the contest.

Parker will have been pleased with the way in which his side made the most of the rare attacks that they were afforded by Leeds, with the Whites having to stand firm when coming under increased pressure from the opposition during the last quarter of the game.

Rodak is Fulham's clear number one pick
The Fulham keeper once again showed why he should be Parker's number one pick between the sticks, with the young keeper pulling off a string of good saves to keep Leeds at bay.

His feats this term have been made all the more impressive by the fact that he has successfully dislodged Marcus Bettinelli from his position in the side, with the fans' favourite having to settle for a place on the bench for much of the campaign.

Michael Brown cannot understand penalty decision as Leeds lose to Fulham

Michael Brown has told EFL on Quest that referee Tim Robinson made the wrong decision to award Fulham a penalty against Leeds United on Saturday – as the Whites suffered a 2-1 defeat to Scott Parker's men at Craven Cottage.

Aleksandr Mitrovic opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Ben White was adjudged to have pushed Bobby Decordova-Reid in the penalty area when defending a cross – though replays showed the push was minimal.

Leeds did equalise through Patrick Bamford who netted his tenth of the season, after Eddie Nketiah's shot was parried. But Josh Onomah scored the winner, after Leeds failed to defend a corner – and the ex-Tottenham star pounced.

Brown, who played for both Leeds and Fulham during his career, believes the referee made the wrong decision to award Fulham with a penalty – stating that there is minimal contact and White does little wrong.
"I don't understand what the referee sees," Brown said. "Yes, there is a slight bit of contact, but we've got  to have a bit of contact. That is never a penalty. No way, and that is why Leeds United will feel disappointed. It leaves them with an uphill task against a strong Fulham side."

TBR's view – Brown spot on, Leeds should feel aggrieved

Decisions like this can alter an entire season. Leeds have now taken one point from two matches – after seven wins in a row beforehand. Last season, their excellent first half was followed by a plummeting second half.
Now, Leeds need to shake off this bad spell of form before the worry takes over at fan level. The Whites have an expectant fan base and promotion is a necessity, rather than a dream this season. Decisions like this can affect an entire campaign.

Former Premier League referee admits Fulham penalty was "misread" against Leeds United
Leeds United were handed a 2-1 defeat at Fulham on Saturday afternoon in the Championship

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes Tim Robinson "misread" the challenge which led to a early Fulham penalty at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

Marcelo Bielsa's Whites fell to their first defeat since early October in the capital and were put on the back foot in the seventh minute as referee Robinson pointed to the spot.

Leeds defender Ben White was adjudged to have pushed Bobby Reid to the floor inside the six-yard box but replays showed minimal contact between the two despite United's protests.

Aleksandar Mitrovic converted from 12-yards to open the scoring before a second half strike from Josh Onomah earned the hosts all three points following a Patrick Bamford leveller after the break..

Club captain Liam Cooper and owner Andrea Radrizzani took to social media to voice their displeasure at the decision and now former top flight official Gallagher has agreed with the complaints.

"It's not a penalty for me," Gallagher told Sky Sports.

"I think he feels the slightest touch in the back and goes down. I think the referee has misread it.

"He gives a penalty because he thinks he shoves him in the back, but there's not enough there for me."

Former Whites defender Stephen Warnock echoed his sentiments: "I agree with Dermot. It's very, very soft."

Confirmed: Preston key player missing for seven games in contention for Leeds clash

Leeds United did lose their 11-match unbeaten run on Saturday against Fulham, but the best part of the Championship is that there's always a game around the corner to bounce back.

Marcelo Bielsa's men come up against Preston, West Brom, and Sheffield Wednesday in the next three weeks – all teams in the top-six of the league.

The Whites know they will all be hard tasks, but games against your nearest rivals are the best opportunities to make sure that they don't earn any points.

First up is Preston and Alex Neil confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Monday that Davies will be back in contention for the game at Elland Road on Thursday.

"He was in contention for Saturday but we made a late decision on him so he will be in contention again for this one," he said via the club's official Twitter account.

Davies had featured 16 times in the Championship before picking up an injury and would be expected to come in and replaced former Whites man Paul Huntington if he did recover between now and the game.

Davies has been missing since Preston's 1-0 defeat against Derby County in November, after only managing to complete 72 minutes in that clash.

The 24-year-old had completed 90 minutes in each of Preston's opening 15 matches in the Championship and if fully fit is surely guaranteed a spot back in Neil's starting line up at Elland Road.

Games for Boxing Day
For our post-Christmas game we travel up to Kenilworth Road to play Luton Town.

So after an unexpected? result against Leeds we face Luton Town. When "the Hatters" visited Craven Cottage earlier in the season Mitro' got himself a hat-trick, more of the same would be good. The final score was 3-2, which I think flattered Luton but having said that it was a good game and we can't afford to go to sleep as we did towards the end of that game.

Luton are struggling a bit, they've lost their last 3 games and in November were beaten 7-0 when they played Brentford however, they have won against Wigan and Charlton.

MOT Tactics: Post-match comments from Scott Parker don't mask what happened on pitch v Fulham

This article is part of a regular series from Leeds United Twitter account All Stats Aren't We – the team also host a brilliant podcast that goes in-depth into the tactics of Marcelo Bielsa and a deeper look at the underlying stats

–––––––––––––––––

Scott Parker came out on Saturday and said that Leeds play repetitions and patterns and that he exploited that. It was clear that Fulham were pressing well and played that style of gegenpressing which is probably the best tactic against Leeds.

The principle was this: go long to Mitrovic – this bypasses the Leeds midfield and their high press – and then press aggressively in midfield areas to win the ball back.

Of course, as we know, this sort of approach unsettles Leeds. However, they coped with it fairly well.

We're seeing a lot of praise for Mitrovic. We actually thought the Leeds centre-backs dealt with him well. They kept him outside the penalty area or forced him wide. And in the course of the game, he wasn't particularly productive.

The penalty changed the course of the game. We have no interest in discussing the rightness or wrongness of it. But Fulham going up changed the strategy for both teams.

Leeds played the first half in their typical dominant style and opened up Fulham on a couple of occasions. For some reason, Bielsa changed the 4-1-4-1 to more of a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 in the second half.

We suspect this was because he felt that there was little point having three midfielders when the opposition weren't looking to build in the midfield. We also... don't have three midfielders fit right now.

Luton Town v Fulham
THU 26 Dec 2019  Championship
Venue: Kenilworth Road

Simon Sluga made his first start since October in the defeat by Swansea at the weekend

Luton boss Graeme Jones could retain faith with Simon Sluga in goal despite the possibility of James Shea returning to fitness for the Boxing Day game.

Shea missed the weekend defeat by Swansea through concussion, and his return will depend on the result of protocols around head injuries.

Fulham defender Denis Odoi is suspended as he completes a three-game ban.

Midfielders Harrison Reed and Bobby Decordova-Reid returned from injury in Saturday's 2-1 win over Leeds.

Harry Arter (calf) and Maxime Le Marchand remain doubts.

Match facts

Luton have not hosted Fulham for a league game since March 1999, losing 4-0 in a third-tier match.
Fulham have won their last three away games against Luton in all competitions, although this is their first visit this century, last playing there in December 1999 in the FA Cup.
Luton have won their last two Boxing Day league games, winning 5-0 in 2017 against Swindon and 2-0 last year against Scunthorpe.
Luton have lost nine of their last 11 league matches (W2 L9), including losing each of the last three in a row.
Fulham have lost back-to-back away league games (1-2 vs Preston and 0-1 vs Brentford) - they last lost three consecutive away Championship matches in February 2015 (4).
Since his debut for Fulham in February 2018, Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored 40 goals in all competitions, 28 more than any other player at the club.

Leeds United dealt significant player blow

Leeds United attacking midfielder Pablo Hernandez has been ruled out for a month after suffering a hamstring injury early in the Fulham defeat.

Hernandez started for the Whites in their 2-1 loss to the Cottagers at the weekend but his time on the pitch was short-lived as he had to be withdrawn after three minutes, following an injury.

Leeds headed into the game looking to bounce back from a devastating 3-3 draw with Cardiff City last week, having been 3-0 up after an hour. This game presented Leeds with a chance to restore daylight between themselves and the chasing pack. However, Leeds' fortunes from the outset were not great as Hernandez was hauled off for Gjanni Alioski, to which Leeds never really got going.

The Spaniard has struggled with injury throughout this season after missing a lengthy spell with different muscular problems in the draw against Derby County back in September.

Speaking in his press conference before the Boxing Day clash against Preston North End, Marcelo Bielsa was obviously asked immediately about the fitness of Hernandez and how long he is set to be out for.

As quoted by Leeds Live, the Argentine confirmed that Hernandez will be out for "one month", ruling him out until mid-January.

The Verdict

This is a massive blow for Leeds who typically look a clearly worse side without Hernandez's inclusion. This was shown in the run they had recently without him, as Helder Costa failed to make the impact everyone expected of him.

Leeds will have to do without their most creative player for the imminent challenging run of fixtures, and the honus on players like Costa and Klich will skyrocket while Hernandez sits out.

Fulham's team of the decade
See who a Fulham fan has selected as their club's team of the decade.

We asked fans from all 24 Sky Bet Championship clubs to pick their teams of the decade.

Here, Fulham fan Chris Ramsey from Fulhamish Pod gives us their selection.
Goalkeeper: Mark Schwarzer

Despite his age, his experience and agility stood the test of time. A sublime shot stopper and a gentleman.
Right-back: John Paintsil

Paintsil's pre-match antics were iconic and was criminally underrated. He had stamina for days - a non-stop workhorse. Legend.
Centre-back: Aaron Hughes

He is not the tallest but his presence was pivotal. A mainstay for many years and very dependable.
Centre-back: Brede Hangeland

Hangeland is easily the greatest centre-half we have ever had. A dominant, no-nonsense enforcer at the back that held everything together. A hero.
Left-back: Matt Targett

Targett was only in our books for half a season but he shored up our left side manfully. Extremely studied in his trade and played a major role in our 2017/18 promotion campaign.
Right-midfield: Zoltan Gera

Gera was the reason I swapped Mercurials for Mundials as a youngster. A wizard along the flanks and an inspiration to all.
Central midfield: Danny Murphy

An inventive spark in the middle that left everything on the turf. Upped the standard. Not bad at penalties either.
Central midfield: Stefan Johansen

A hard working catalyst that loves to drive his opponents witless. An unsung hero in many respects.
Left-midfield: Clint Dempsey

Dempsey was vibrant, skilful and deadly. The best American export to hit the Premier League and a joy to watch. We will forget about his little tantrum before he left SW6, though.
Attacking midfield: Tom Cairney

Cairney has one of the sweetest left foots in the Championship. Composes rhythm and sets the tempo. He is the playmaker we rely on so dearly.
Striker: Aleksandar Mitrovic

Without the lethal Serb, we'd be vastly mediocre. Such a natural-born finisher with a passion for Fulham. We are not worthy.

Fulham and Brentford consider January move for Tottenham winger Jack Clarke with Spurs set to recall teenager from Leeds loan

Tottenham's Jack Clarke is set to be targeted by Fulham and Brentford in January
The winger has been on-loan at Leeds but Marcelo Bielsa has not used him
The 19-year-old is set to be recalled by Spurs, setting up a move next month

Fulham and Brentford are considering moving for Jack Clarke in January if Tottenham recall the winger from his loan spell at Leeds.

Clarke, who joined Spurs from Leeds for a deal that could ultimately be worth £11million last summer, was allowed to return to Elland Road on loan but has barely featured under Marcelo Bielsa, featuring for only 19 minutes in the league this term.

Spurs are now set to recall the 19-year-old and if they do, Leeds' promotion rivals Fulham are thought to be interested along with Brentford, who are pushing for a play-off place.

Jack Clarke could be set for a January move to Brentford or Fulham if he is recalled from Leeds

The 19-year-old winger has struggled for game-time under Marcelo Bielsa this season

Clarke was one of the breakthrough stars of the Championship when he broke into the Leeds team last season but he has struggled to reproduce that form this term.

Clarke came through the youth system at the West Yorkshire club and made his first-team debut on 6 October last year against Brentford.

Clarke signed for Spurs from Leeds after a breakout season last term but hasn't replicated it

He made 25 appearances for the club last season and helped them to the Championship play-off semi-finals, where they lost to Derby County.

Without Clarke, Leeds have had a similarly strong start to the season and are second in the table, although they have taken only a single point from their last two matches.

93% passing accuracy: The Fulham man who really showed his qualities against Leeds United

Fulham arrested their three game losing slump at the weekend as they sealed an important 2-1 win over second placed Leeds United at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

Scott Parker's side came into the game off the back of a 1-0 West London derby defeat to Brentford last time out, and were looking to do all they could to not make it four consecutive Championship defeats.

The Cottagers had the perfect start, as they took the lead with less than ten minutes on the clock. Aleksandar Mitrovic's penalty cannoned in off the near post to take his league goals tally for the season to seventeen.

Leeds then found their way back into the game just after the break, as Eddie Nketiah's initial low shot was parried by Marek Rodak, with Patrick Bamford tapping in the rebound.

However, Josh Onomah was the hero for Fulham as he buried a first-time effort from just inside the penalty area in the 69th minute into the top corner to give Fulham a much needed victory.

Here, we take a closer look at how the 23-year-old performed against Marcelo Bielsa's side...

Onomah has been a fringe player for the majority of this season for Fulham, but has been given starting chances by Scott Parker over the last month, repaying the faith in his manager by producing some good performances.

Saturday's match marked the fifth time in succession that Onomah has started for Fulham, also playing the full ninety minutes for the third game in a row.

The standout statistic from his display was his goal, which was scored with his only shot of the game, which shows maximum efficiency on his part.

The midfielder also had a passing accuracy rate of 93%, highlighting that Onomah contributed much more to Fulham's performance than just his winning goal. He was also voted as Man of the Match.

He also won both the aerial duels he competed for and made four interceptions, proving that he can also do the defensive work for his side when needed.

The midfielder is enjoying his best run of form for the West London club since signing in the summer, and Scott Parker will hope it continues during the festive period.

Getting really fed up with all this nonsense that the penalty was soft, he did not shove him hard but put his arms in the back of Reid to stop him getting to the ball. Unless I am wrong that is a foul as the use of arms is not allowed unless you are in goal. I agree it was not a huge push but he was using his hands. It is like when you put a hand to someones face it is a straight red, you don't have to knock three teeth out and a shoulder offside is still offside.
