Exclusive: Fulham set to seal transfer agreement for ex-Championship player

Fulham are closing on on a deal to free-agent goalkeeper Jordan Archer, a source close to the player has confirmed to Football League World Chief Editor Sam Rourke.

The 26-year-old was most recently at Karl Robinson’s Oxford United in League One, as he provided cover for Simon Eastwood over the festive period, making six appearances for the U’s.

The Walthamstow-born goalkeeper is now a free-agent and Championship promotion chasers Fulham are set to seal an agreement for the player, with it increasingly likely that Marcus Bettinelli will depart Craven Cottage, as per the aforementioned source.

Archer’s most fruitful spell came during his stint at Millwall, where he recorded 144 appearances at the New Den from 2015 until 2019.

The keeper started his youth career at Spurs and made several loan spells before settling at Millwall, it was at the London club that he received a call-up to the Scotland national team in 2018.

Fulham currently sit in fourth position in the Championship table, as they look to launch a push for promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Fulham linked with a transfer for Boro striker

Middlesbrough forward Britt Assombalonga has been touted as a potential transfer target for Fulham according to reports.

Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic suffered a suspected ankle injury in Fulham's 1-0 victory against Hull City, which has put his season in the balance.

Mitrovic has been the major goal threat for the Cottagers, netting 18 goals in 26 appearances this season.

Assombalonga is seen as a safe transfer bet that would guarantee goals for the London club in the Championship.

The DR Congo forward has already been linked with a move away from Boro in January with Premier League side Aston Villa said to be interested in his services.

Fulham have money to spend and will likely back manager Scott Parker as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. Boro are open to selling the forward at the right price.

However, manager Jonathan Woodgate has refused to talk about the player's future when quizzed by reporters in recent matches.

Assombalonga is currently out with an injury and has not played in the past month. During this period Boro have enjoyed their best run in the League, currently on a six match unbeaten run.

This suggests that Woodgate can cope with an exit to the former Nottingham Forest striker, with the likes of Ashley Fletcher enjoying a good spell of scoring spree in his absence.

Assombalonga is Middlesbrough's record signing, having joined the club for £15 million two seasons ago.

Sparkasse Cup Round-Up

The Under-19s recorded their best ever finish in the Sparkasse & VGH Cup over the course of the last week finishing runners up.

The Young Whites lost to a strong Mainz team in the final with forward Terry Ablade also scooping the Player of the Tournament accolade for his fine scoring form and tireless recovery runs.

Fulham started in the VR Bank Group with hopes of surpassing last year’s finish of the quarter final stage. The opening games on Thursday ended in convincing wins over local sides Rhume-Oder and SVG Einbeck.

With two more comprehensive wins against local sides on Friday in the shape of JSG Weper and Weser-Schwülme the bigger German clubs would come into play. The final games of the group stages played on Saturday saw two score draws against Borussia Monchengladbach and Hannover meaning the lads finished second in the group behind the latter.

The ‘second round group’ commenced on the final day with the top three sides from each group being split. Steve Wigley’s side were dealt a tough hand with last year’s winners Fortuna Dusseldorf and eventual winners Mainz. A phenomenal effort saw two wins by the one-goal margin to progress into the quarter finals – Mainz qualified second.

The quarter final put another German side with pedigree in the firing line - Frankfurt - the lads brushed them aside to set up a semi-final tie with Werder Bremen. Five goals were put past the Bundesliga side which facilitated a repeat of the intermediate group tie in the final. In the all-important tie, Mainz were the victors by three goals to one – capping an outstanding campaign by the Under-19s team.

Ablade was in scintillating form netting nine goals to earn him the Player of the Tournament.

West Brom and Fulham given a boost with Dwight Gayle's hamstring injury not as bad as first feared... but they face competition from Championship rivals for £10m-rated Newcastle striker

Dwight Gayle injured his hamstring in Newcastle's 1-1 draw against Wolves
After concerns of a six-week lay-off, he should be training in two to three weeks
West Brom, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday are interested
Newcastle are willing to allow Gayle to leave the club on loan this month

Dwight Gayle's suitors have received a boost after it emerged his hamstring injury is not as bad as first feared.

Striker Gayle was forced out of Newcastle's 1-1 draw against Wolves after just 28 minutes on Saturday.

The 29 year-old suffered a small tear and the initial concern was that he would be sidelined for up to six weeks.

Dwight Gayle picked up a hamstring injury at Wolves during Saturday's game at Molineux

Gayle has made nine appearances, but has started just two, in the Premier League this season

But following medical tests Gayle is likely to return to training in two to three weeks and is earmarked to resume playing early next month.

That will be welcome news for his Championship admirers who want Gayle to come in and hit the ground running so he can quickly bolster their respective promotion bids.

Gayle scored 23 goals in the Championship last season for current league leaders West Brom

Leaders West Brom, who Gayle scored 23 goals for last season, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday, who are all in the Championship's top six, are battling it out to sign Gayle.

Newcastle are willing to let him leave on loan this month in a deal that also includes a £10m obligation to buy.

Report: Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday doing battle for £10m ace

Dwight Gayle could return to the Championship with another promotion in his sights - Fulham and Wednesday reportedly want Newcastle's Premier League sub.

Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham have joined the race to sign Newcastle United benchwarmer Dwight Gayle, according to The Mail.

One of the most prolific goalscorers in recent Championship history understandably has a whole host of promotion-seeking sides battling for his signature. Gayle fired Newcastle to the league title in 2017 before netting 23 times during a loan spell at West Brom two years later - so it's fair to say he's got a decent track record.

Interest from Leeds, West Brom and Nottingham Forest has been well documented but, according to The Mail, there are now two more names in the frame.

Fulham have been trying to bring the diminutive number nine to Craven Cottage since 2017, as reported by The Mirror (4 September, page 46) while Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has also renewed his interest in a man he wanted at Middlesbrough three years ago (The Sun).

The Owls are under pressure to avoid Financial Fair Play sanctions, though Newcastle’s willingness to loan Gayle out for the second half of the campaign could make a move to Hillsborough a genuine possibility.

The Magpies, however, will insist on a £10 million obligation-to-buy clause – meaning Wednesday would be under huge pressure to seal promotion or risk putting themselves in a precarious financial position.

Both Fulham and Wednesday lost their star strikers to long-term injuries this week (Aleksandar Mitrovic and Steven Fletcher could both be out until the spring), and there are few better replacements on the market than Gayle.

Exclusive: Southampton set sights on signing Fulham player, £7m will seal deal

Southampton have set their sights on signing Fulham defender Joe Bryan this month, Football Insider can reveal.

The Premier League club are in the market for a left-back and are targeting a move for the 26-year-old.

A Southampton source has told Football Insider the club are weighing up a move for Bryan as they look to beat Serie A high flyers Atalanta to his signature.

Fulham value Bryan at over £5million and would be willing to sell him if a club met their £7m asking price.

Southampton may have an advantage as they are looking at a permanent deal, while Atalanta would prefer a loan move.

Bryan has been a mainstay at Fulham since signing in the summer of 2018 from Bristol City for around £6million.

He was the regular left-back during their season in the Premier League that ended in relegation and has started 24 of their 27 Championship matches this season.

Bryan moved to the west Londoners after proving himself to be one of the best full-backs in the Football League during his time at Bristol City.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has admitted he is in the market for new full-backs this month.

The Premier League outfit are battling relegation although a recent revival led by red-hot Danny Ings has helped them to 28 points from their 22 matches this campaign.

This places Southampton in 12th, with a seven-point cushion over Aston Villa in 18th.

Medical completed: 26-yr-old agrees to join Fulham – Exclusive

Goalkeeper Jordan Archer has completed a medical at Fulham as he puts the finishing touches to a transfer, Football Insider understands.

Archer, 26, is a free agent after leaving Oxford United following a short-term one-month stay at the League One club.

A Fulham source has tod Football Insider that he is now set to move to Craven Cottage after undergoing a medical and agreeing the terms of a deal.

The former Tottenham youngster is expected to sign a contract until the end of the season with the west Londoners.

Archer will provide cover and competition for current No.1 keeper Marek Rodak.

He left Millwall last summer after running down his contract at the Den, but was left without a club until he joined Oxford United.

The Scotland international moved to the League One promotion hopefuls in December and he kept three clean sheets in eight appearances for the U’s.

His Oxford form brought him to the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid and Fulham have moved to offer the experienced keeper a return to the Championship.

Archer made 166 appearances for Millwall during his four years at the club and broke into the Scotland squad.

He has one international cap after playing 13 times for his country at Under-21s level.

Archer has also had spells at Wycombe Wanderers and Northampton Town after leaving Tottenham without breaking into their senior side.

Southampton join Watford in the race to sign Fulham defender Joe Bryan

Premier League side Southampton have shown an interest in signing Fulham defender Joe Bryan according to a report from Football Insider.

The South Coast club join Watford in pursuit of the 26-year old, with the Hornets first showing an interest last week due to their defensive crisis.

Although nothing seems to have come of that interest if the Hornets are interested in signing Bryan they best act fast as Football Insider reports that Southampton’s interest in the Fulham left-back is strong.

They report that Southampton’s boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is in the market for full-backs this January and Joe Bryan could fit the bill perfectly.

Despite getting relegated with Fulham in the 2018/19 campaign, Bryan impressed on his debut season in the Premier League and deserves another chance in the top flight.

He has started 24 league matches for Fulham so far this season, helping them to fourth in the Sky Bet Championship table.

According to Football Insider, Joe Bryan is valued at £7 million by the Cottagers, and the club would be willing to sell him if they received an offer in this price range.

Bryan moved to Fulham back in the summer of 2018, joining the club from Bristol City for just £6 million.

He thoroughly impressed during his time at Bristol City, establishing himself as one of the top left-sided defenders in the Football League, and this season at Fulham has been no different.

It remains unclear whether Bryan would favour a move to either Southampton or Watford, or whether he might want to stay at Fulham and help them return to the top flight after just one season back in the second tier.

Joe Bryan: Southampton rival Watford with interest in Fulham left-back
All latest transfer news in our Transfer Centre blog

Joe Bryan has two potential avenues into the Premier League

Southampton are interested in a January deal for Fulham left-back Joe Bryan.

The Saints want to strengthen at both full-back positions and Bryan is high among their targets.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this month he is also of interest to Watford, who are keen to sign a left-back.

Bryan is having an excellent season for Fulham and played in the Premier League for them last season after joining from Bristol City.

The 23-year-old is known for his dangerous crossing and has already recorded three assists under Scott Parker this term.

Bryan has played in all but one of Fulham's Championship games this season, and has made 57 appearances for the club altogether, scoring twice.

Meanwhile, Southampton remain one of the leading clubs hoping to land Tottenham's Kyle Walker-Peters on loan, along with Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Mike McGrath's transfer notebook: Fulham keeper Marcus Bettinelli emerges as January target for Premier League club

Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli punches the ball away Credit: afp

Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has emerged as an option to solve West Ham’s goalkeeper problems.

David Moyes has been frustrated in his attempts to land Darren Randolph from Middlesbrough due to a thigh injury, with No 1 Lukasz Fabianski out for two weeks with a hip problem.

Bettinelli, 27, was in the England squad last season but faces an uncertain future at Craven Cottage with Marek Rodák competing for a place under Scott Parker.

Boro could also look at Bettinelli should they lose Randolph and there has also been interest from abroad for the keeper. Fulham are looking at Jordan Archer on a free agent as cover.

After Darren Randolph, West Ham reportedly looking at another Championship goalkeeper

According to The Telegraph, West Ham United are interested in signing Marcus Bettinelli from Championship club Fulham in the January transfer window.

It has been reported that West Ham are interested in signing Darren Randolph from Championship outfit Middlesbrough, but a thigh injury to the Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper has put a hold to that transfer.

Bettinelli has emerged as a transfer option for Premier League outfit West Ham, with the 27-year-old goalkeeper having to compete with Marek Rodak for a place in the Fulham starting lineup, according to the report.

Need for a goalkeeper

Lukasz Fabianski is the first-choice goalkeeper at West Ham, but the 34-year-old Poland international himself is struggling with injury and will be out for a couple of weeks.

The Hammers need to sign a goalkeeper who can be an able back-up to the former Arsenal player, and can also replace him in the future, as Fabianski is in his mid-30s.

West Ham are 16th in the Premier League table at the moment with 22 points from 21 matches, just a point above the relegation zone.

The AEW Isn't the Only Sports Venture Tony Khan Is Affiliated With

When it comes to the world of professional wrestling, most people only know of the WWE and its extended roster of superstars. But this wasn't always the case. Back in the day, there were tons of different leagues that were mostly regional shows that dominated specific areas. It wasn't until the McMahons created the largest organization in America that the groundwork for World Wrestling Entertainment was laid.

Now, there's a serious competitor that's drawing top talent: Tony Khan and the AEW.

Of course, they aren't the first "threat" that the WWE has had to strive against in the past. The WCW at one point drew in even bigger ratings than the WWE for an extended period of time, and forged a heated rivalry that had each league trying to one-up each other every couple of days on live TV broadcasts. Then there were "underground" leagues like ECW, which had its own stable of stars.

TNA IMPACT Wrestling (now Impact!) had gained some popularity for a while too, but ultimately proved nowhere near the WWE's might. Vince McMahon's organization ultimately bought out rivals WCW and ECW, and brought in some of its best stars, and even squeezed out some entertaining as hell storylines from the purchase.

And while there are certainly other promotions out there, like New Japan Pro Wrestling, the only one right now that may pose a problem to the WWE is AEW.

Who is Tony Khan?
A lot of that has to do with the business acumen and wealth that Tony Khan, son of Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan, brings to the table. Tony is the co-owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars and EFL Championship team Fulham F.C. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BS in finance, but realistically learned a great deal from his father's successful business ventures on how to make it as a top executive.

On Oct. 2 2019, Khan dropped a bombshell on the professional wrestling world when AEW Dynamite began airing live on TNT.

The two-hour spectacle immediately drew some top talent away from the WWE, a company known for its cutthroat business practices and fomenting a level of competition among its athletes. There are tons of superstars who were unhappy with the payment structures, storytelling, and practices in the WWE who were more than happy to sign with the rival organization. Chief among them was Chris Jericho.

The Manhasset-born wrestler said that his decision to part ways with the company was due to a "final insult" from the promotion after he was promised from Vince McMahon that the culmination of his widely popular rivalry with Kevin Owens would be on full display at Wrestlemania, where Chris would win the title. Chris, who was with the WWE for 15 years, couldn't believe the move that Vince pulled next.

He was then told that the main event would be Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg, and that Chris and Kevin's match would be relegated to the second match of the evening... and that the world title would no longer be on the line. Chris was frustrated and angered by the news and decided to take his mic and ring skills elsewhere. Tony Khan was more than happy to give him a home at AEW, and he is now the organization's world champion.

Another former WWE standout, Dean Ambrose, also made the move to AEW, but he goes by Jon Moxley now. While the AEW is still relatively new, they've already managed to develop a strong fan base, even if they currently aren't a threat to the WWE's stellar RAW and SmackDown! televised events. They are, however, in direct competition with NXT, the WWE's "developmental league" which houses standout Finn Balor.

It was a move that surprised many, especially considering Finn was fast becoming a big name in the pro-wrestling world, but the timing of the Superstar's transition to NXT made it plain for many fans to see that the WWE was attempting to draw eyes away from AEW and onto the budding talent that they'd eventually move over to RAW and SmackDown.

Tony's already made a pretty big splash in the pro-wrestling world, and his deep pockets, along with know-how in managing other sports teams, could prove a huge boon to the organization. You can catch AEW Dynamite on TNT, Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET.

January Transfer Rumour Round-Up: Part 2

Sound the alarm! Aleksandar Mitrovic’s condition is still unknown, Joe Bryan is being linked to a host of tempting destinations and one of our own, Marcus Bettinelli, could be on the brink of an exit after plummeting down Scott Parker’s pecking order.

Reinforcements will be needed, that’s a stone cold fact. As ever, Fulham will most likely bide their sweet ass time before making their move in the January transfer window and we’ll end up signing some nomadic Moroccan from the Hungarian second division. Exciting, I know.

We’ve seen the same old Dwight Gayle balderdash surface once more and Britt Assombalonga’s name also appears to be doing the rounds but forget about ’em. We’ve another helping of questionable transfer rumours for you to paw at, whilst deciphering whether their pretty much dead in the water, or very much alive and kicking.

Terence Kongolo – Huddersfield Town
Strengthening the defensive department may be on Scott Parker’s agenda as it’s emerged that Fulham – subject to a Football Insider report – are plotting to swoop for Huddersfield Town centre-half Terence Kongolo.

No longer considered in Danny Cowley’s plans, it’s thought that the 25-year-old Dutch international could leave the Terriers during the mid-season transfer window, having only made 11 senior appearances for the club this term to date.

Youssouf Sabaly – FC Girondins de Bordeaux
A familiar name in Fulham’s transfer target Rolodex, FC Girondins de Bordeaux’s €15m-rated Youssouf Sabaly could be on his way to English shores for a medical, yet again, with Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton all tracking the right-back’s availability.

French outlet Foot Mercato suggest that the Ligue 1 outfit are prepared to lose the Senegal international during January, even though his current contract runs until 2021. Sabaly, 26, allegedly had a medical with the Whites last January, somewhere in New Malden, legend has it, although the then struggling Premier League club’s €12m deadline day offer came in too late for Les Girondins to accept it.

Daniel Ayala – Middlesbrough
This proposed link has been bubbling for months on end, but Middlesbrough’s Daniel Ayala – as quoted by Hartlepool Mail – insists that he will remain at the Riverside Stadium “unless something really big happens”.

The Spanish centre-half is entering the closing few months of his standing contract at the club and now, under the Bosman ruling, the 29-year-old’s allowed to talk to English clubs regarding a potential move. Leeds United, Stoke City and Fulham have all been cited as interested parties in the hunt for his services.

Daniel Amartey – Leicester City
Another scoop circulated by Football Insider claims that Fulham are keeping a close eye on Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey, who could be granted the opportunity to depart the King Power Stadium on loan, in order to gather more first-team game time elsewhere.

The versatile Ghana international, capable of deputising in an anchoring capacity as well as within a back four, has not played a competitive senior match since breaking his leg against West Ham United 15 months ago. It’s thought the Whites attempted to sign him in the summer but, ultimately, failed to do so.

Ali Gueddar – En Avante de Guingamp
Reliable French source RMC, courtesy of an article fed by Get French Football News, believes EA Guingamp’s Ali Gueddar is keen to head for pastures new this month. In light of this, Fulham have been credited as a vying suitor for the discarded youngster’s signature.

Signing a professional deal with the Ligue 2 club just 6 months ago, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has not made a single first-team appearance under Sylvain Didot. With six months left on his contract (which does include an option to extend it by a further two years), the Frenchman could be swayed by the Whites’ supposed interest, as he searches for a fresh challenge to kick-start his dormant, yet budding career.

José Antonio Gómez Márquez – Coria CF
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo are under the impression that Fulham are contesting the likes of Catalan superpower FC Barcelona for Coria CF’s teenage sensation José Antonio Gómez Márquez, commonly known as Joselito.

The 15-year-old hotshot has taken Tercera División by storm with a string of highly impressive performances and the Whites’, as well as the Blaugrana, supposedly, are seriously considering a ‘firm offer’ for his burgeoning services, and have even invited him to Motspur Park to soak up the club’s state-of-the-art facilities. Trumps Barca’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper site, that’s for sure.

Jordan Archer – Free Agent
Yet again (who would’ve thought it), Football Insider have revealed that out-of-contract goalkeeper Jordan Archer has allegedly undergone a medical at Fulham after waving goodbye to Oxford United, whom he’d been contracted to on a short-term basis.

The 26-year-old, formally of Millwall, was nurtured within Tottenham Hotspur’s youth ranks and it’s thought he could be on the cusp of agreeing a deal that will keep him in SW6 for the remainder of the campaign. As far as back-ups go, could be better, could be much, much worse.
