Fulham dominated possession but struggled to create many clear-cut chances

Fulham missed the chance to move within a point of an automatic promotion spot after being held by an out-of-form Charlton side.

Scott Parker's visitors had the better of the first half - Bobby Reid forcing two decent saves from Dillon Phillips - while cries for a penalty were ignored after Alfie Doughty accidentally handballed in the box.

It was more even after the break, Fulham going closest to a winner when Michael Hector headed wide when unmarked from a corner at the back post.

Charlton had just one shot on target, Josh Cullen's near-post effort kept out by Marek Rodak, though sub Jonny Williams was denied a late tap-in by Cyrus Christie's vital block.

The draw leaves Fulham third in the Championship - three points behind second-placed Leeds having played a game more - though they remain above Nottingham Forest, who drew with Reading.

Meanwhile the Addicks stay 19th, six points clear of the drop, having won just one of their past 17 league games.

The Cottagers badly missed the attacking threat of injured duo Anthony Knockaert and Aleksandar Mitrovic, while Charlton could not capitalise on a lively atmosphere at The Valley after boss Lee Bowyer signed a new deal earlier on Wednesday.

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer told BBC Radio London:

"It was a decent point against a very good Fulham side.

"From the start minute to the last my players were excellent - no switching off, young lads tracking and we were excellent defensively.

"We had to hit them on the break at times but, come on, we're playing against a Premier League side there and I thought we deserved a point."

Fulham boss Scott Parker told BBC Radio London:

"It was always going to be down to that one big chance that you needed to take, and then it's a 1-0 win, dust yourselves down and get out.

"We probably had two big chances that we didn't take, and from there it's probably fair to say if you can't win it, you don't lose it.

"Overall I'm a little disappointed but I think when all is said and done this will be a decent point on the board."

Head Coach press conference

Scott Parker was left rueing missed chances as Fulham were forced to settle for a point at Charlton on Wednesday night.

A bright start from Fulham saw them dominate large parts of the opening 45 minutes, Bobby Decordova-Reid going close on numerous occasions. With Charlton contended to sit back and bank up in defence chances were few and far between but when opportunities did arise a lack of cutting edge in front of goal saw the match remain goalless.

Despite the frustration Parker was quick to focus on the positives and praise his sides defensive strength and the passion on show.

%u201CI think sitting here now it%u2019s a one or two nil game if we had taken our chances,%u201D Parker stated. %u201CThere were two massive chances in that second half and if we had taken them we would be sitting here at 1-0%u201D

%u201CWe had good control in that game so initially I feel a little bit disappointed.

%u201CBut in saying that we got another clean sheet. It%u2019s our third clean sheet in a row now.

%u201CIf you don%u2019t manage to win a game you certainly can%u2019t lose it and I think from tonight that%u2019s the biggest positive.

%u201CI have sat in in this seat after matches this year where we have had a lot of control and we have still come away with a defeat because someone has hit us on the break.

%u201CI think we were really solid and that%u2019s a big positive.

%u201CThere is no denying that we have a lot of front half players injured at this present moment in time and this was certainly a game for an attacking piece of genius.

%u201CWe were playing a side who were banked up and we needed some attacking flair and something off the cuff but we didn%u2019t have that because we have a lot of injuries.

%u201COverall I am delighted with my players who were full of commitment. I can%u2019t fault our effort here tonight.

%u201CCharlton were fighting for their lives and playing for a draw so we knew this match was going to come down to one chance.

%u201CTonight we had chances but weren%u2019t clinical and of course on another day we could have taken one of those chances and we would have come away with a win.

%u201CI saw a fully committed team.

%u201CWhen we have come up against teams like this sometimes this year that are full of heart and passion we haven%u2019t matched that.

%u201CBut tonight we did.

%u201CTonight we matched them toe-to-toe in the sense of heart and passion.

%u201CIt%u2019s just shame we didn%u2019t take our chances that fell our way. %u201C

When asked about the injuries to key players within the squad the Head Coach stated that there is a slim chance that Aboubakar Kamara, Neeskens Kebano, Anthony Knockaert & Aleksandar Mitrovic could be fit to face Huddersfield Town following our clash with Manchester City in the Emirates FA Cup.

%u201CI%u2019m hoping their might be a slim chance for them to be back for Huddersfield,%u201D Parker said. %u201CIt will be a bit touch and go to be honest with you but we hope to have them back soon.%u201D

Manchester City team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Fulham

Manchester City will be looking to book their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup when they welcome Championship side Fulham to the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

Pep Guardiola's side will enter the match off the back of a 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the Premier League on Tuesday night, where Aymeric Laporte made his return from a knee problem.

City now face back-to-back cup fixtures as they will follow Sunday's clash with the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against rivals Manchester United on January 29.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up City's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the FA Cup fixture at the Etihad Stadium.

Leroy Sane
Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Leroy Sane, who continues to be linked with a move to Bayern Munich, has been on the sidelines since injuring knee ligaments against Liverpool in the Community Shield back in August. The Germany international is making good progress, though, and could return to action at some point in February.

John Stones
Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Leg
Possible return date: January 26 (vs. Fulham)

John Stones missed out against Sheffield United on Tuesday night after picking up a slight injury against Crystal Palace at the weekend. However, the centre-back could return for this weekend's clash.

Benjamin Mendy
Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Fatigue
Possible return date: January 26 (vs. Fulham)

Benjamin Mendy was not involved against the Blades with Guardiola revealing ahead of the match that the left-back was struggling with "muscular fatigue". The defender could recover in time for this game, though.

MAN CITY'S SUSPENSION LIST
City have no suspension concerns ahead of the FA Cup fixture.

2.3 Key passes: The 23-y/o creative talent that could make all the difference for Fulham

With the January transfer window slowly but surely ticking down towards its deadline, Championship clubs will be desperate to get some important transfers over the line in the next few weeks.

One of the sides who are in need of reinforcements is Scott Parker's Fulham, who are seeking to make an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last term.

A key area that the Cottagers boss is looking to improve over the coming weeks is in the wide attacking areas, with French publication L'Equipe reporting that the Whites are interested in a move for Huddersfield Town winger Isaac Mbenza this month.

The 23-year-old Belgian has found his game time largely limited this term and could, in theory, be in favour of making a move to west London as he seeks to gain more regular game time.

After moving from French Ligue 1 side Montpellier during the summer, big things were expected of the attacker, however, he has so far failed to really set the world alight.

Here, we break down the numbers as we analyse the statistics behind Fulham's reported interest in securing Mbenza's services this month...

The Wideman has managed to garner one assist so far this campaign whilst also contributing at least 2.3 key passes per game, perhaps suggesting that he could add an extra creative edge to Fulham's performances if he were to make the move.

Whilst in the final third, Mbenza averages 1.3 crosses per game, perhaps suggesting that he could provide some good deliveries for the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic to get on the end of.

He also averages only one shot per game, perhaps suggesting that his offensive output is an area that needs to be improved over the next few weeks if he is to secure a move away from the Terriers.

Lastly, the Belgian winger also has a respectable passing success rate of 90.3%, thus suggesting that he would seemingly adapt well to Fulham's possession-based style of play.

45.5% duels won: The Premier League defender who could boost Fulham's promotion hopes

Fulham have had a good season so far, and they'll be looking to go on and challenge for automatic promotion in the coming months.

One thing they need to do to ensure that they can do that is keep their defence consistently solid. The addition of Michael Hector seems to have made an immediate impact, with The Cottagers having kept two clean sheets in their last two games.

Fulham have been linked with a move for Burnley defender Ben Gibson in recent weeks, and this would see them attempt to make sure that they had enough options in the centre-back position.

Gibson has shown he has the ability to compete and be one of the best defenders in the division. Fulham would have a lot of options in their defensive shape and this would leave them to be able to focus on attacking games knowing they have a solid backline.

He hasn't played that much throughout the season or last campaign but he now has to try and get playing football again and back to his best in order to be a valid option for The Cottagers. If it is a transfer then Fulham would massively benefit in the future, if they can bring him in for a relatively cheap fee.

Gibson does have a poor disciplinary record, and in just 453 minutes last season, he picked up three yellow cards and one red card. This is something that could add a bit of bite to Fulham's play and make them a side that teams are afraid of, rather than being known for their pretty football.

Again, last season he didn't win as many duels as he would have liked with just 45.5%. That's something that has to be improved if he is to move. As mentioned before, he hasn't played a lot of football and has had a number of bad injuries, so he'll only get better in the future.

If Fulham are to sign him then it would be a boost to the club and set them on the right track for a promotion to the Premier League.

Club remain keen to sign Fulham player – Agent deadline seemingly meaningless

A week ago today we covered claims from Sweden of Djurgården interest in Fulham's Luca de la Torre.

The former San Diego Surf midfielder has a contract expiring in the summer, so his agent has been free to speak to other clubs about a free transfer when the season ends. De La Torre could move before then, and there were even suggestions last week (likely from the agent) that a move to Sweden could be sorted out by the weekend.

Djurgården confirmed interest, but made it clear they hadn't managed to agree a deal with the Fulham player at that point.

A day after the claims originated, the agent. Lance Davids, came from his under his cover and spoke directly to Fotboll Direkt, saying: "It is true that we met Djurgården on Sunday, we had a good conversation. But we have interest from several places, including from another Championship club. We need to get a message from Djurgården soon, within the next 48 hours."

That warning didn't work, and the deadline came and went.

Fotboll Direkt say Djurgården remain keen, but before signing De La Torre they need to sort out some other issues, and to make sure they have room in their squad.

There's also now a suggestion that given the 21 year old got on the bench for Fulham at the weekend, that could have some impact on a potential transfer.

Update given on player situation amidst Fulham's ongoing transfer interest

Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones has provided an update on the future of Burnley's Ben Gibson, stating that the Premier League club are keen for at least £40,000 of the defender's wages to be covered in order for a loan move to go through.

As was previously reported by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, the 27-year-old defender is of interest to Championship outfit Fulham this month, with the Whites being one of a number of clubs that are interested in securing the player's signature.

Gibson has largely found his game time limited due to the presence of Messrs James Tarkowski and Ben Mee, meaning that he has only been afforded one appearance in the Carabao Cup this term.

The 27-year-old is no stranger to Championship football, having turned out for his former side Middlesbrough on over 140 occasions in the second division.

The defender's current contract at Turf Moor expires in the summer of 2022, meaning that a loan more seems like a bigger possibility than a permanent move at this current time.

The Verdict

This is a symbolic development in this transfer saga and could well determine as to whether Fulham follow up their interest in Gibson or not, with Scott Parker seemingly keen to reinforce his defensive options over the coming weeks of the January window.

It remains to be seen as to whether the Whites will be able to match Burnley's expectations over payment of the player's wages, particularly as the west London based club are still aiming to balance the books after spending heavily on players last term.

Gibson represents something of a low cost option that will surely appeal to Parker, whilst also offering the Cottagers the chance to bring in a player who would fit into their possession based style of play.

A loan move is almost certain to come to fruition for the player this window, particularly if Burnley secure a replacement for the former Middlesbrough man this window, with Fulham perhaps offering the best solution for the out of favour defender.

'I don't see the point in this at all' – Fulham plot move for out-of-favour winger: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World's 'The Verdict' series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...

Fulham manager Scott Parker is on the look-out for additional attacking options  as he looks to maintain his side's promotion challenge, with a move for Huddersfield Town winger Issac Mbenza being considered, according to French media outlet L'Equipe.

Mbenza arrived at the John Smith's Stadium in 2018, initially on-loan before making the move permanent in the summer of 2019, but the 23-year-old has struggled for game-time having failed to make an appearance for the Terriers in five months.

So would Mbenza be a good addition at Craven Cottage and is he actually needed?

We discuss.........

Chris Gallagher

"I don't see the point in this at all.

"Fulham have so many options in the final third, which was evident last time out. Parker had a front three of Ivan Cavaleiro, Anthony Knockaert and Bobby Reid and that was with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Aboubakar Kamara not involved.

"When you consider Tom Cairney can play in advanced roles and Neeskens Kebano is still at the club, you'd have to say a move for Mbenza doesn't make sense. He hasn't done enough at Huddersfield to suggest he will make a positive impact at Craven Cottage.

"They should only be looking to bring in a new attacking player if they're a clear upgrade on what they have and the Huddersfield man doesn't fit into that category. They should wait to see if anyone else comes up or otherwise stick with what they have."

Luke Phelps

"Isaac Mbenza is another player who's been exiled by Danny Cowley – since the ex-Lincoln City boss took charge of the club, Mbenza has played less than 90-minutes of football. He's still a young player though and one who can still have a solid career in England.

"The 23-year-old arrived in England with a reputation as a pacey, direct winger or front-man with good finishing ability. But Huddersfield were atrocious last season, and it was always going to be hard for any incoming player to have a real impact in such a poor squad.

"Scott Parker should work hard to bring Mbenza to Craven Cottage. They've got some good players in attacking positions but the likes of Bobby Reid and Anthony Knockaert are on-loan (Reid with a view to signing permanently), and Aleksandar Mitrovic looking like he could be out the door any minute.

"It'd cost Fulham a pretty penny but I think Mbenza would be worth it – he's a player with a point to prove in the English game and playing in Parker's fast-paced Fulham team could pull the best out of the Frenchman."

Louie Chandler

"Mbenza clearly has a lot of ability and could well be an exciting addition to the Fulham set-up.

"But is he needed? I don't think so. When you look at the wide players already at the club's disposal, it seems like a bit of a waste of money frankly.

"Ivan Cavaleiro, Anthony Knockaert, Aboubakar Kamara, Neeskens Kebano and even Bobby Decordova-Reid are all capable of playing on both wings.

"Perhaps if all other priorities are sorted first, then Fulham could make a move for Mbenza. But until then, I think a move would be ill-judged."

'Would be a fantastic addition' – Fulham eye transfer for 27-year-old: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World's 'The Verdict' series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...

Fulham Manager Scott Parker faces going head-to-head with both Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough in his pursuit of Burnley defender Ben Gibson, though the Clarets have already rejected loan proposals from the Championship trio, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Burnley will allow the 27-year-old to leave the club this month, as he is seen as surplus to requirements at Turf Moor, but the club is insistent on securing a replacement for the defender before he departs.

So would Gibson be a good addition at Craven Cottage and is he actually needed?

We discuss.........

Chris Gallagher

"This would be a fantastic addition.

"Since Michael Hector started playing things have improved for Fulham defensively but you still feel they could do with one more option and Gibson would make a big impact.

"He has proven himself to be a top quality player at this level and he would slot in as the left-sided centre-back with ease and a partnership with Hector could potentially be one of the best in the league. As well as that, he is capable in possession and would be able to play out from the back – something which Scott Parker demands from his team.

"With Tim Ream and Alfie Mawson also options to partner Hector, it's not as if Fulham are desperate for a new centre-back and anyone who does come in needs to be a very good player, but the ex-Boro man fits into that category and would improve the group."

Luke Phelps

"Ben Gibson has been exiled at Burnley this season. The likes of Ben Mee and James Tarkowski have kept him on the bench, whilst injury has also thwarted his season, but Sean Dyche is looking to loan him out this month, providing they can find a replacement first.

"He's a player with good Championship pedigree having won promotion from the league with Middlesbrough in 2016. He racked up over 200 games for the Boro and played in all 38 of their games in the top-flight, but since his move to Burnley in 2018, he''s played just once in the Premier League.

"He'd be a fine addition for Fulham – he's a very modern centre-back in that he's blessed with a decent bit of pace and ball-playing ability. Whether he's needed or not is another question though. Fulham have brought in Michael Hector and Terrence Kongolo this month, and already have the likes of Tim Ream and Alfie Mawson at the club.

"Numbers are always needed going into the business end of the season though, and someone with promotion experience would greatly benefit Scott Parker's side. I'd love to see this move happen but I'm not sure Gibson would want to come to a club with so much competition already there."

Louie Chandler

"Ben Gibson was absolutely quality and would be a great addition to any Championship side in all honesty.

"With Michael Hector having arrived, the defence is already looking sturdier but if they can get another rock-solid partner for him it could make all the difference.

"Connor Goldson has also been linked with a move, so it is clear that the Whites are certainly looking down the right lines.

"Fulham are now in a very strong position to push for promotion and Parker has to back himself this month."

Fulham pick up point in stalemate at Charlton

Charlton 0 Fulham 0

Fulham were unable to move within a point of the automatic promotion places after being held to a draw by struggling Charlton.

In a match devoid of real quality at The Valley, the Whites went closest to scoring either side of half-time through Joe Bryan and Michael Hector.

Bryan was released on goal by Tom Cairney's defence-splitting pass, only to fire narrowly wide of the post, before an unmarked Hector glanced Ivan Cavaleiro's inviting corner off-target from close range.

It turned out to be their best chances of the game as they struggled to break down a resilient Charlton, who themselves fashioned chances after being forced to defend throughout most of the opening 45 minutes.

Erhun Oztumer failed to capitalise on a Tim Ream mistake by shanking his effort high into the stands, before a vital Cyrus Christie intervention denied Jonny Williams as he tried to meet Lyle Taylor's cross at the end of a blistering counter-attack.

In the end, neither side could find a way through as they each settled for a point.

Fulham will feel they dropped two points. Nevertheless, the gap between them and second-placed Leeds was reduced to three points.
Fulham: Rodák; Odoi, Hector, Ream, Bryan; McDonald, Cairney (Johansen 75), Arter (Christie 72); Onomah (Stansfield 87), Cavaleiro, Decordova-Reid.
Subs not used: Bettinelli (GK), Kongolo, De la Torre, Sessegnon.

Charlton 0-0 Fulham: FLW Reports on a hard-fought London derby

Charlton and Fulham played out a 0-0 draw at The Valley on Wednesday night, in a game both will feel was there for the taking.

efore the game, the home fans were in fine voice and for obvious reasons. Only a few hours ago, Lee Bowyer signed a contract extension that should see him here until 2023 and the hope is that he will oversee a new, exciting period for the club.

Fulham, meanwhile, knew a win tonight would see them move to just a point behind Leeds United in the top two and so this one had plenty riding on it

The first half was watchable, then, but far from something you'd want to go over again.

Both sides had moments where they'd manage to impose their evident game plans but, unfortunately for the pair, neither would do enough to really threaten the goal.

Typically, Fulham would be the side with more of the ball and Charlton would be happy to try and hit them on the break, getting most joy by playing the ball out wide and driving forwards.

For the Addicks, young Alfie Doughty had the bit between his teeth. On more than one occasion he'd get the home crowd out of their seats as he drove over the halfway line, ball at his feet and Fulham players in his wake.

Suitably for the first half, though, at the final third his options would prove scarce and, to the frustration of those watching on, Charlton would have to go back and start again.

Fulham, meanwhile, saw Bobby Reid in charge of their best chances but, each time, he'd fire straight at Dillon Phillips.

It was noticeable how the visitors – as you'd expect – missed the focal point of Aleksandar Mitrovic on the edge of the opposition box, with Reid often drifting out wide and coming deep for the ball, unsurprisingly traits you'd associate with a player being used as a makeshift forward.

Plenty of huff and puff in the first period on a foggy night in south-east London, then, but little to really blow anyone away.

Hope, then, amongst the 18,000+ at The Valley – of which over 2,000 had come across the capital – would be that the second half would see an injection of creativity but, in truth, it was largely a case of the status quo prevailing.

Early on in the second period, Fulham had a golden opportunity. A deep corner found Michael Hector at the far post but, despite being afforded time and space, the defender could not hit the target – a lack of composure from someone who's been serene so far in their time at the Cottage.

Kevin McDonald would also have a chance, the ball popping up to him in the area but he could not control his finish – wildly slashing over.

At the other end, Charlton would also have chances but perhaps slightly less clear-cut.

Josh Cullen would play in Doughty after Tomer Hemed won possession but the winger could only strike at Marek Rodak in the Fulham net.

Erhun Oztumer would also have an opportunity on the edge of the box but, out of the McDonald book of finishing, he also miscued and skewed over.

With 20 minutes to go, Lee Bowyer had seen enough. He summoned Lyle Taylor who received rapturous applause from the home fans.

The Addicks could at least call on their number nine tonight, Fulham's remains in recovery and working hard in the gym.

Indeed, we'd get a chance to see Andre Green and Taylor work together for the Addicks here, with the former introduced with about 10 minutes to go but, ultimately, they weren't given a period of time to really show what their partnership might be able to yield in the coming weeks – providing Taylor is at the club past January.

This game, then, seemed destined to end as a draw.

Indeed, the last four league matches between this pair at this ground had ended as draws – twice 1-1 and twice 2-2, whilst the fixture earlier this season at the Cottage was also a draw – so perhaps it was no shock that the spoils were shared this time around as well.

And, when you take into account both sides – for most of the game – had their main goal-scorer missing, perhaps it was no surprise either we weren't treated to any goals.

Charlton, at least, should hope that such an issue will be a thing of the past with Taylor back in the fold for now but Fulham, who gave young striker Jay Stansfield a senior debut with minutes left, still have a Mitrovic-sized headache to solve.

They wasted too many chances against Middlesbrough and needed to create more here tonight, too.

A draw was fair, then, but both will feel as though they could have done more for the three points.

Charlton 0-0 Fulham: Cottagers miss opportunity to pile pressure on Championship leaders
Report and highlights from the Sky Bet Championship clash at The Valley

Fulham were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Charlton as they missed the opportunity to pile pressure on the Championship leaders on Wednesday night.

In a game of limited opportunities at The Valley, Fulham clearly missed the injured pair of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Anthony Knockaert, rarely testing Charlton's goalkeeper Dillon Phillips.

It was a point that took them to within three points of Leeds in second, and four behind leaders West Brom, albeit having played a game more than both.

For Charlton it was a rare clean sheet and a point to celebrate the new contract of boss Lee Bowyer, as he had signed a three-year deal earlier in the day.

Charlton hold firm at The Valley
Fulham dominated possession in the first half but opportunities were at a premium. Most were half-chances that fell to Bobby Reid, but on three occasions Phillips made a relatively straight-forward save.

Team news

There were six changes for Charlton in all, while key striker Lyle Taylor returned to the bench. Anthony Knockaert missed out for Fulham, with Harry Arter starting in his place.

Chances were few and far between in the second half, too. Alfie Doughty forced Marek Rodak into a decent save on the hour, and shortly afterwards Joe Bryan had a pop for Fulham, but again it was comfortable for Phillips.

Fulham boss Scott Parker had limited options on the bench, and even put on youngster Jay Stansfield late on for his league debut, but there would be no way through for his side. They did stay third, however, as Nottingham Forest also drew with Reading on Wednesday night.

What the managers said...

Charlton's Lee Bowyer: "I'm over the moon but I would have liked [the new contract] sooner. It has been dragging on over the past two years and I want to be part of building something at this club. I have great people around me, my staff are excellent and we all work hard.

"I've got fans who don't stop singing and players who give me everything when they step onto the pitch, so why wouldn't I want to be part of what is happening here? The new [ownership] group has come in and the chairman has said a lot of things that I like hearing so this is the place for me to be for the next three years."

Fulham's Scott Parker: "The game was one or two big chances. It was a one-nil game if you take a chance. We had some good control so initially I was quite disappointed but it was our third clean sheet in a row and if you don't win the game, you certainly don't lose it.

"That is the biggest positive. I have sat here many times this year after having a lot of control and we have come away with a defeat because they have hit us on the break. I thought we looked pretty solid."

Man of the match: Tom Lockyer

Fulham had only failed to score in one of their previous Championship games before Wednesday night, but they were held at arm's length for the majority of the night at The Valley. Charlton's defence was exceptional and no one showed more commitment at the back than Lockyer - who tackled, headed, blocked and cleared everything that came his way.

What's next?

Charlton have a 10-day break now before they host Barnsley in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday, February 1 at 3pm. Fulham face a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium to face FA Cup holders Manchester City this coming Sunday.

REPORT: Charlton 0 Fulham 0 - points shared at The Valley

REPORT: Charlton and Fulham share the spoils at The Valley

Charlton and Fulham played out a goalless draw in a game void of chances at The Valley.

On a day when the London derby felt like a side show to the news that Lee Bowyer had signed a three-year deal at the club, both sides looked content with a point.

The visitors looked the more likely to snatch a win and should've with defender Michael Hector missing the best chance of the game early in the second half.

On a positive note for the Addicks, the clean sheet was the first registered in 17 games.

Fulham settled into their stride early, dominating possession, but playing in front of Charlton.

Bobby Decordova-Reid forced Addicks keeper Dillon Phillips into two good saves early on, one form distance and one from close range after Tom Cairney slipped him through after beating the off-side trap.

Bowyer's men weathered the early pressure and grew into the tie, largely thanks to the foraging runs of Alfie Doughty down the flank.

Despite finally getting their foot on the ball the Addicks were wasteful, with Ehurn Oztumer and Josh Cullen guilty of squandering dead ball opportunities.

Charlton should've found themselves a goal down shortly after the interval, but Michael Hector could only find the side netting with his free header following a corner.

It should've served as a wake-up call for Bowyer's side who have a tendency to switch off after the re-start, but moments later Jason Pearce nearly gifted Fulham the lead after being caught in possession, only to be bailed out by defensive partner Tom Lockyer.

Sloppiness was contagious it seemed, as Harry Arter's slack pass forced Marek Rodak, who had been a bystander for the opening half, into a decent stop at his near post from Alfie Doughty.

Looking toothless, Bowyer turned to Jonny Williams, Lyle Taylor and Andre Green from the bench to add more impetus to his side.

Although chances were at a premium they looked a menace on the counter attack, with Cyrus Christie stopping a sure-fire Williams strike late on after cutting out Taylor's dangerous cross.

With both sides looking unlikely to break the deadlock, points were shared.

Parker bemoans missed chances as Fulham held to draw at Charlton

Fulham manager Scott Parker bemoaned the goals that got away in the 0-0 draw at Charlton as his team missed the chance to close to within a point of the Sky Bet Championship's automatic promotion places.

Parker was disappointed by his team's wasted opportunities, especially a header by Michael Hector early in the second half that went wide.

But he praised the battling qualities in the absence of the injured Aleksandar Mitrovic and Anthony Knockaert that enabled his men to take their first point in an away London derby in seven attempts.

"The game was one or two big chances," Parker said.

"It was a one-nil game if you take a chance. We had some good control so initially I was quite disappointed but it was our third clean sheet in a row and if you don't win the game, you certainly don't lose it.

"That is the biggest positive. I have sat here many times this year after having a lot of control and we have come away with a defeat because they have hit us on the break. I thought we looked pretty solid.

"We have got a lot of players injured and it was a game for a bit of attacking genius or flair or something a little bit off the cuff, which at this moment we haven't got because of injuries at that end of the pitch.

"But overall I saw a team that is full of commitment and I can't fault our effort tonight. It was just a shame we could not take those chances that fell our way."

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer was equally pleased with his side's fighting spirit.

"I thought we deserved a point," he said.

"From start to finish it was a very professional performance. In the first half they had a lot of possession without hurting us and in the second half we came into it more and had a couple of chances and could have nicked the game."

Bowyer also expressed his delight with the award of a new three-year contract.

"I'm over the moon but I would have liked it sooner," he said.

"It has been dragging on over the past two years and I want to be part of building something at this club. I have great people around me, my staff are excellent and we all work hard.

"I've got fans who don't stop singing and players who give me everything when they step onto the pitch, so why wouldn't I want to be part of what is happening here?

"The new [ownership] group has come in and the chairman has said a lot of things that I like hearing so this is the place for me to be for the next three years."

Bowyer hopes that the new regime will also mean new signings in what remains of the January window.

"The sooner we bring people in the better but they have to be the right people," he said.

"The chairman has the list so it is in his hands, but I know January can be difficult."

Fulham miss chance to pile pressure on Championship top two with goalless draw at Charlton

Opportunity missed: Michael Hector reacts during a goalless draw at The Valley ( Getty Images )

Fulham were held to a goalless draw at Charlton on Wednesday night as they missed the chance to move within a point of the Championship promotion spots.

The visitors had lost each of their previous six away London derbies, so a point at The Valley was an improvement of sorts, but they will feel they should have done more against a team at the wrong end of the table.

Charlton have won just one of their past 16 matches in the Championship but they at least battled hard for a result to celebrate the award of a three-year contract to manager Lee Bowyer.

The pre-match news of Bowyer's new deal was greeted with enthusiasm from the home fans and they were still in good voice as their team opened on the attack.

But despite the absences of injured duo Aleksandar Mitrovic and Anthony Knockaert, Fulham were soon pushing forward and Charlton goalkeeper Dillon Phillips had to block an angled shot from Bobby Decordova-Reid.

Charlton struggled to regain their early impetus and when Alfie Doughty ran from his own penalty area to Fulham's after Charlton cleared a corner, he found no team-mate in position to receive a pass.

Tom Cairney had no such problems and another pass found Joe Bryan advancing down the left to send a skidding shot just past Phillips' far post.

Doughty remained the Charlton player most likely to get the locals on their feet but another buccaneering run down the right was anticipated by Fulham's Tim Ream, who cleared.

Fulham should have gone ahead five minutes into the second half when Michael Hector found space at the far post to meet Ivan Cavaleiro's corner from the left but the defender put his header wide.

The impressive Bryan then stung the hands of Phillips with a rising shot from the edge of the area as Fulham enjoyed another spell of dominance, but for all their passing superiority, the visitors were unable to engineer that unmissable chance.

That was due in no small part to the home side's determination, and Erhun Oztumer put a warning shot for Charlton over their crossbar after catching Ream in possession to remind Fulham that they were not the only team looking to score.

But although the home side launched a late charge, they failed to threaten Marek Rodak's goal.

Parker praises players despite 'massive chances' missed

Fulham boss Scott Parker praised his team's commitment after they were held to a goalless draw by Charlton at The Valley.

The Whites had the opportunity to go within a point of the Championship's automatic promotion places but spurned two great chances either side of half-time to do so.

Joe Bryan fired narrowly wide of the post, after being put through on goal by Tom Cairney's defence-splitting pass, before an unmarked Michael Hector glanced Ivan Cavaleiro's corner off-target from close range.

Despite admitting some disappointment, Parker was pleased with how his side performed.

He said: "I think we had two massive chances [in the] second half. If you take that opportunity and you're seeing the game out 1-0.

"I'm a little bit disappointed but, in saying that, I think it's a third clean sheet in a row now and if you don't win it, you certainly don't lose the game. That's the biggest positive.

"I think I've sat here many a time this year after having a lot of control, and really camping up at times in the opposition team, and we come away with a defeat because they hit us on the break. I thought we looked pretty solid so that was a big positive.

"It was probably a game for an attacking bit of genius really, where a team are banked up and you need your attacking flair and something which is a little bit off-the-cuff – which, obviously, at the moment we haven't got because we have a lot of injuries to that end of the pitch.

"Overall, I'm delighted with the players, I'm delighted with the team. I see a bunch of players here tonight who were full of commitment."

Fulham frustrated by courageous Charlton

Fulham missed out on the opportunity to make serious inroads on the Championship's top two as they were held to a goalless draw by a committed Charlton side at the Valley tonight.

The Addicks were well-drilled and diligent throughout, keeping Fulham at bay with a spirited defensive display, and looked more threatening the longer a soporific contest went on. Buoyed by the news that boss Lee Bowyer had put pen to paper on a new three-year contract at long last, Charlton were good value for their first clean sheet in seventeen games but barely tested Marek Rodak in the visiting goal.

Fulham, already without their talisman in Aleksandar Mitrovic, were dealt another serious blow before kick-off as Anthony Knockaert was ruled out for approximately three weeks with a hamstring problem. Shorn of a significant source of creativity as well as their main goal threat, Fulham lacked both the guile to unlock a disciplined Charlton defence and the penetration to take advantage when they did get into the final third. Their clearest chance fell to defender Michael Hector, who contrived to head wide from close range, having peeled off his man to get to Ivan Cavaleiro's corner unattended in the second half.

There was little of the vibrant movement that had characterised the first half an hour against Middlesbrough on Friday and a distinct raising of the tempo after the break merely petered out. Scott Parker's solution to Knockaert's absence was to shoehorn Josh Onomah into a left-wing role where he toiled manfully but looked uncomfortable – and the manager's substitutions with the game in the balance were baffling. On came Cyrus Christie as the Whites switched to a back three when a more adventurous change might have penned Charlton back and teenage striker Jay Stansfield barely touched the ball having been given just three minutes to make an impression.

The home side began brightly and forced a succession of early corners but Fulham gradually grabbed control of the contest, dominating possession but struggling to fashion clear-cut openings. Onomah grazed the side netting having darted in from the left before Bobby Decordova-Reid went close twice in two minutes. Dillion Phillips did well to turn a swerving shot aside at his near post and then was alert again to claw an effort to safety from much closer range after Tom Cairney had sent the on-loan man Cardiff man through on goal.

Cairney then produced a beautifully threaded ball to release Joe Bryan into the inside left channel but the advancing full-back shot right across the face of goal to finish a flowing move. Fulham failed to seriously extend the Charlton defence again before the interval, with the home side occasionally looking dangerous on the counter. Nippy winger Alfie Doughty showed a blistering turn of pace to take the ball away from three Fulham players on a direct 60-yard run before running into Tim Ream as he approached the penalty area.

Hector, who was composed once again at the heart of the Fulham defence, spurned the game's best opportunity at the start of the second half, heading criminally wide when completely unmarked at the far post. There was a let off for Jason Pearce, who was robbed in a dangerous position by Onomah, after Tom Lockyer produced a well-timed challenge to prevent Decordova-Reid from surging through on goal.

Fulham's high press was causing Charlton a goal deal of discomfort. Onomah pounced on an error from Josh Cullen but Cavaleiro's eventual shot was bravely blocked by Pearce and Kevin McDonald's wild attempt on the follow-up flew into the visiting fans behind the goal. The lively Doughty was Charlton's most promising outlet – and the 20 year-old winger seized on a rare mistake from Harry Arter but Rodak was equal to his low effort at his near post. Ream then produced a superb saving tackle to deny Tomer Hemed as the Israeli seemed set to score a sixth goal in four games against the Whites.

Bowyer's changes were far more adventurous than Parker's as the Charlton boss introduced Jonny Williams and the returning Lyle Taylor as he sought a late winner. Doughty drove disappointingly over after working space down the left with Taylor well placed in the centre and he kicked the turf in anger, but the youngster showed plenty of promise on a night when inventiveness was in short supply.

Fulham probed away patiently in front of the Charlton defence but looked alarmingly toothless without Mitrovic's hulking presence and it was actually the home side who looked more likely to nick it late on. Christie produced a magnificent piece of defending to snuff out the danger as Williams appeared certain to turn home a Taylor cross after a break sparked by another beautiful Doughty ball. Right at the death, Pearce glanced a Cullen free-kick wide and Fulham had to be content with a third consecutive clean sheet and cutting the deficit to second-placed Leeds to three points.
