The Lowdown: Boro U23s

The Under-23s travel to Middlesbrough on Sunday hoping to end a spell of three PL2 games without a win at the newly revised venue of the Riverside Stadium.

Form:

Middlesbrough:

Boro themselves have endured a tricky period, losing four of their last five league games, conceding 20 goals in the process. Form which has seen them slip out of play-off contention into seventh place.

Fulham:

With no wins in their last five, the Young Whites sit bottom but one. Three points on Sunday could move Mark Pembridge and Colin Omogbehin's side as high as ninth.

Last Time Out:

Nicolas Santos-Clase's double was shut-out by four goals from the visitors on a tricky day in September at Motspur Park.

He Said:

Marlon Fossey spoke of his delight to be out playing again following a long-term injury and his views on the play-off hunt.

"As a team we feel very confident going into Sunday. I think we realise, as a team, we can't afford many more dropped points if we hope to clinch a spot in the playoffs, so I think that in itself gives us some extra hunger and motivation going into these final seven league games. Middlesbrough are in a similar position to us in the table, so I definitely expect a tough test on Sunday. I'm looking forward to it.

"Having to miss the first half of the season rehabbing two injuries that required surgery has been a mental grind to say the least. But I'm back in the mix now and it feels great. On a more recent note, getting my first minutes of the season against Everton was a beautiful feeling."

FFCtv:

The game will not be available via livestream on FFCtv.

1 in, 1 out: The Huddersfield Town XI we expect Danny Cowley to field v Fulham

Huddersfield Town face a tough test as they make the trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham, but will be buoyant after two positive results recently.

Danny Cowley has had a very strong January transfer window, adding in a blend of youth and experience in key areas to help mould the squad for a push away from the relegation zone in the back end of the season.

As of deadline day, Cowley has made four first-team signings in the shape of Emile Smith-Rowe, Richard Stearman, Harry Toffolo, and Andy King, building a very strong spine for the Terriers to push on and move away from the relegation zone.

Their last two results have been a massive boost after recent months, as they frustrated Brentford at home to earn a 0-0 draw to back that up with a late 2-1 win at the KCOM Stadium over a deflated Hull City side. These points have seen Cowley's men climb to 19th in the table and six points clear of the drop zone.

Up next for the Terriers is another tough away trip as they travel to Craven Cottage to face a high-flying Fulham side currently looking at the automatic promotion places under Scott Parker.

With Cowley's men looking to remain unbeaten for a third game and get payback on the Cottagers after their late win at the John Smith's Stadium, we take a look at the side we expect Cowley to field on Saturday afternoon...

The 4-2-3-1 formation has served the former Lincoln boss very well since being appointed and it would be foolish to change that, given that the only time he has done so, they were thumped by Bristol City.

In goal will be an enforced change as Kamil Grabara sits out following his horrific injury away to Hull City, when he collided with Christopher Schindler and was only discharged from hospital on Thursday. This opens the door for Joel Coleman to make his second appearance for the season as Huddersfield look to replace Grabara for the time he is out.

In defence will remain Juninho Bacuna, Richard Stearman, Christopher Schindler and Harry Toffolo. This quartet were very solid in their triumph over Hull on Tuesday and Bacuna especially, considering he is only filling in at right-back while Danny Simpson sits out with injury.

In a holding midfield pair, will be Lewis O'Brien and Trevoh Chalobah who also played very well to limit Hull's potent midfield to barely any chances, and will have a similar task on their hands when they face Fulham's formidable attack.

In attacking midfield will be Elias Kachunga, Emile Smith-Rowe, and Karlan Grant. These three were very important to the triumph in midweek with Grant scoring the games opening goal coming in off the left and Kachunga's great work out wide setting up the 96th-minute winner at the KCOM.

Smith-Rowe's arrival has breathed new life into Huddersfield's attack as he provides them with creativity and impetus in the final third that they have been crying out for while Alex Pritchard has struggled with injury.

Up front will remain Frazier Campbell, which might be a tad harsh on match-winner Steve Mounie, who has scored four in his last six appearances for the Terriers. However, the former is Cowley's main striker for a good reason as his hard work tees up the chances for the likes of Grant to gobble up, and once he has ran his course in the second half, Mounie can step in and exploit the spaces as he did against Hull.

It won't be any easy game for Huddersfield who will know of the threat that Parker's side possess going forward but they are certainly there to be got at, especially with Huddersfield's presence in attack.

The expected Fulham XI that Parker will field v Huddersfield

Fulham host Huddersfield Town in the Championship tomorrow.

A change of pace for 4th-place Fulham, who last time out faced Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

An FA Cup Fourth Round tie saw City host and beat Fulham 4-0. But Scott Parker's side can now fully-focus on league affairs, with two points separating them from Forest in 3rd and four from 2nd-place West Brom.

Tomorrow, Fulham welcome Danny Cowley's Terriers to Craven Cottage. They come into this one in 19th-place of the table, and with six points between them and the drop zone.

Here we take a look at the starting line-up that Parker is expected to name tomorrow:

There should be a number of changes from the side that lost at City, with Dennis Odoi, Tom Cairney, Kevin McDonald and Anthony Knockaert coming back into the starting line-up.

Marek Rodak will start in-goal with a four-strong defence ahead of him – expect to see Odoi return at right-back, with Michael Hector and Tim Ream in the middle and Joe Bryan on the left.

Parker fielded a back-five for the City game but should revert to a 4-3-3 for this one, with Terrence Kongolo dropping down to the bench after making his Fulham debut in the FA Cup.

In midfield, expect to see McDonald return in the middle with Cairney to his left, and Stefan Johansen keeping his spot in midfield, and sitting on the right of that three.

Up-front, Ivan Cavaleiro will keep his spot on the left-wing with Knockaert on the right – the Frenchman has sat out the last two with a suspected muscle injury, but should be available for selection tomorrow.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic still sidelined for at least a couple of weeks, Bobby Reid will start in the no.9 role.

Jean-Kevin Augustin, Wayne Rooney and Rhian Brewster: Nine key January Championship signings
Huddersfield land "most exciting young attacking player in English football", while Hull snatch League One's creator-in-chief...

Jean-Kevin Augustin, Leeds United - on loan from RB Leipzig
It didn't work out for Eddie Nketiah at Leeds, but their need for a striker to push Patrick Bamford saw Marcelo Bielsa look again for another option and eventually turn to Augustin.

The 22-year-old came through the academy at Paris Saint-Germain, where he made 23 Ligue 1 appearances and scored twice, before joining Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in 2017. Limited appearances resulted in him moving on again, to Monaco on loan at the start of this season, but competition for places there saw him switch to Leeds. In total, he has 14 league goals in 75 appearances in France and Germany so far.

Leeds and Bamford had been struggling for wins and goals of late, but Augustin's presence in the stands inspired the No 9 to his best performance of the season, as Bamford scored twice in their 3-2 comeback win against Millwall on Tuesday night.

"He's a centre-forward with good movement and mobility," said Bielsa of his new acquisition. "In the team, he's involved in the combination play and has a lot of presence in the box.

"He has a well-known background, a good trajectory and he's going to be useful for the needs we have in our team. He is a young player. When he used to play in the [PSG] Academy, he was one of the more well-known players in the world."

Wayne Rooney, Derby County - from DC United
It is strange to think of Rooney as a January signing because his move to Derby was announced so long ago. But the switch was only made official during the winter window.

The England and Manchester United legend, now 34, was immediately handed the captain's armband by Phillip Cocu, and Derby have picked up 10 points from his five games in the side. His first goals for the club came this week, too, as he struck in defeat at Luton and in Friday night's victory against Stoke.

Rooney is also a player-coach at the club, having spent a month or so working behind the scenes under Cocu before making his debut, and he will be keen for the move to be a success on his return to English football. He is arguably the biggest name ever to play in the Championship.

"If a player with the qualities, career and the experience of Rooney (is available), you have to be very happy and glad he is here," said Cocu.

Rhian Brewster, Swansea - on loan from Liverpool
One of three loan signings made by Swansea boss Steve Cooper in January, Brewster has joined the club alongside Chelsea youngsters Conor Gallagher - who excelled at Charlton in the first half of the season - and defender Marc Guehi.

Brewster, still just 19, has made three league appearances for the Swans since joining from Liverpool, and netted his first senior goal against Wigan earlier this month.

Most renowned for winning the Golden Boot in England's triumphant Under-17 World Cup campaign in 2017, Brewster scored eight times in that tournament under Cooper, and now has the opportunity to impress in the Championship after recovering from a long-term injury.

"Swansea and Steve Cooper asked already in the summer if he can go and it was not the right moment," said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp earlier this month. "He came out of a long-term injury, so I thought he needed to just get a rhythm, and get used to his body again, but he needed to get used to the intensity.

"Now he's already training for a long, long period, so it was a good moment to give him on loan and to help Swansea hopefully, and Swansea can help Rhian and then us."

Nahki Wells, Bristol City - from Burnley
Bristol City have been desperate for a striker since the injury suffered by Benik Afobe in September, and they have finally got their man through the door in Wells.

The former Huddersfield striker, who won promotion to the Premier League in 2017, spent last season and the first half of this campaign on loan at QPR from Burnley - where he struggled to make an impact. He has already scored 13 Championship goals in 2019/20 and he was far from short of interest in January.

The 29-year-old Bermuda international has 65 goals and 22 assists in 213 Championship appearances. Bristol City have gone into the latter part of the last few seasons in play-off contention, only to drift away towards the end of the campaign. They will hope the impact of Wells will help them kick on into the top six.

"Nahki is a player with so much talent and he is a proven goalscorer at this level," said Bristol City boss Lee Johnson. "I have spoken before of our ability to create a lot of chances and I think Nahki will help us in terms of that clinical edge which we have needed at times.

"I'm really looking forward to working with him and I think he will be a great fit in our squad, as we set our sights on a strong finish with 18 matches left."

Callum Robinson, West Brom - on loan from Sheffield United
Robinson returns to the Championship with West Brom, having struggled to make the grade with Sheffield United in the Premier League.

The forward was bought to Bramall Lane by Chris Wilder in the summer from Preston - having scored 31 goals in 124 Championship appearances for the club - but managed just one goal in 12 appearances in the top flight, although that did come in a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

West Brom have failed to win any of their last seven games as their promotion push has stuttered, and boss Slaven Bilic will hope that Robinson can inject some much-needed energy into their flagging forward line.

The 24-year-old is capable of playing anywhere across the front line, and will also compete for a starting place with fellow new signing Kamil Grosicki, who arrived from Hull on Deadline Day.

"The majority of the things that I saw good about him is when he was coming from the left side," said Bilic. "That is when you look at him at Preston. Sheffield United play a different system to most of the teams but he can also play up front. He can play behind. He's got a bit of everything."

Nuno da Costa, Nottingham Forest - from Strasbourg
Nottingham Forest's impressive recent run of form has seen them emerge as the main challengers to Leeds and West Brom for promotion, and Sabri Lamouchi has moved in January to bolster their strike-force.

It is a wise move, too. Forest have been extremely reliant on Lewis Grabban this season, and only two sides in the top half of the Championship have scored fewer goals than them.

Da Costa, 28, scored 14 goals in 74 Ligue 1 appearances for Strasbourg, helped them win the French League Cup last season and secure qualification for this season's Europa League, and even netted against the mighty PSG in 2018/19.

Lamouchi would have watched the striker play in France during his own time in charge at Rennes, and will hope he can provide the competition and support for Grabban that will help end Forest's 21-year wait for Premier League football.

Emile Smith Rowe, Huddersfield - on loan from Arsenal
Another intriguing loan signing from a big Premier League club, Smith Rowe had 10 Arsenal appearances under his belt, and a few on loan for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig last season, before joining Huddersfield.

Still just 19, the midfielder has notched three goals already for Arsenal, netting twice in the Europa League group stage last season against Qarabag and Vorskla Poltava, and once in the Carabao Cup against Blackpool.

He has also appeared for England at every level from Under-16 to Under-20, winning the Under-17 World Cup in 2017. Mikel Arteta, who has utilised several young players already since taking charge at the Emirates, will be keeping a keen eye.

"We wanted to bring in some enthusiasm and energy and quality at the top end of the pitch and being able to bring in Emile Smith Rowe - for us, we see him as the most exciting young attacking player in English football," said Huddersfield boss Danny Cowley.

"He has played quite a lot of football - a lot of U23s football - and a good number of first-team games for Arsenal as well. So we are really pleased to be able to bring him in. I have to say we are thankful to Arsenal."

Michael Hector, Fulham - from Chelsea
Hector is now 27 and has spent the vast majority of his career on loan. He made seven separate moves from Reading between 2019 and 2015, before joining Chelsea and making four temporary switches from Stamford Bridge.

Finally, it appears the centre-back has found a home at Fulham. Hector initially agreed the move in early September, but had to wait until the new year to play.

His impact has been felt already, though. His debut saw a 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup, and in three Championship appearances so far, Fulham have registered three clean sheets.

He has added steel to Scott Parker's back-line, and been vital at a time when goals are lacking due to the injury absence of striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. With him in defence, Fulham have a real chance of promotion.

Marcus Maddison, Hull City - on loan from Peterborough
Hull City have a huge gap in their side following the departure of Kamil Grosicki and the imminent departure of Jarrod Bowen - arguably their two most important attacking players - so have moved for the League One's creator-in-chief.

Now 26, Maddison scored or assisted more than once a game in League One for Peterborough, netting 52 goals and 71 assists in 212 appearances. Charlton were also after him, but Hull are the side that got him through the door on loan.

Initially moving from non-league Gateshead in 2014, Maddison will link up with Grant McCann again, who was his boss at Peterborough from 2016 to 18. It will be interesting to see if he can make the step up to the Championship.

"It's been an eventful 17 or so hours but everything has come together quite nicely. I'm happy to have joined such a big club and I'm just excited to get going now," said Maddison after signing.

"It's a tough league, anybody can beat anybody on any given day. Fulham are one of the best teams in the division. They probably have the best players in the division and have real depth and quality to their squad. They have a clear system and style, they're well organised and well coached and have players that can make moments out of nothing. We have to be ready for that but also pose problems ourselves." – Huddersfield manager Danny Cowley

Programme Peek

In Saturday's official matchday programme, Marek Rodák takes stock of his breakthrough season at Craven Cottage.

When Rodák returned to Fulham from a second loan spell at Rotherham United in the summer, he had just one appearance for the Whites under his belt. That came in an EFL Cup tie at Wycombe Wanderers in August 2017. Should he start against Huddersfield Town, the fixture will be his 20th game of the campaign in a Fulham shirt.

"Betts [Marcus Bettinelli] started the season in goal but I spoke to the gaffer and he said he wanted me around rather than going out on loan again," says Marek. "In football, things can change very quickly. My chance came and playing week in, week out for Fulham is great.

"There can only be one of us who can play. Betts has played a lot of games for Fulham and had been used to being the number one but he's been excellent to me. I can't say a bad word about him.

"Jordan [Archer] has trained well and looked good. It's great to have this competition, to keep you focused. I have to be on it every single day, in training and in games, to keep my place, knowing those two are waiting in the wings."

To read the full interview with Rodák, pick up a copy of the award-winning publication on Saturday. Other highlights include interviews with Scott Parker, Tom Cairney, Aboubakar Kamara, Neeskens Kebano, Robert Wilson, Gary Barnett, Leroy Rosenior and Gordon Davies, plus the usual array of top-drawer features.

Priced £3.50, the 100-page publication is available from various sellers on Stevenage Road from two hours before kick-off. Or order it online from ProgrammeMaster where you can also purchase past editions. For just £1.99, the programme is also available as a digital download on your iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, PC or Mac via Pocketmags from 9am on the day of the game.

Fulham v Huddersfield Town - Stearman relishing new lease of life at Terriers

Richard Stearman: Has become a regular starter since joining Huddersfield Town. (Picture: Jonathan Gawthorpe)

Having been limited to three cup appearances at Sheffield United in the first half of the campaign, experienced defender Richard Stearman is delighted to be a regular starter at Huddersfield Town.

The 32-year-old has helped the Terriers to four points in his two outings with the club as he prepares for a return to his former side Fulham this afternoon.

Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic is the danger man today (Picture: PA0

Huddersfield have put some distance between themselves and the bottom three and Stearman hopes he can make it three games unbeaten in a Town shirt at Craven Cottage.

"It has been a great start, I just wanted to hit the ground running and that is what we have done," he said.

"We have managed to pick up two positive results and are looking forward to Fulham now.

"I was just delighted to be out on the grass. We are desperate for points and we managed to pick up four in my first two games and that is something to build on."

It's been a tough period for the club and the new management team wanted to steady the ship, get safe this season and then look ahead.
    Richard Stearman

Huddersfield's first priority this season is to avoid relegation and Stearman hopes to secure Town's safety sooner rather than later so they can begin to look towards the next campaign.

"It's been a tough period for the club and the new management team wanted to steady the ship, get safe this season and then look ahead," he added.

"The players want to succeed and do well but it's not quite happened that way. Hopefully we can do it sooner rather than later and look forward to next season."

Aleksandar Mitrovic could make his return for Fulham, who sit fourth in the table, after missing the last three matches with an ankle injury.

The Serbian striker is the joint-top goalscorer in the Championship this season, notching 18 goals, and Stearman looks forward to the battle with the 25-year-old, if he is passed fit.

He said: "Teams are struggling to put runs together but Fulham are up there for a reason and it will be a tough task for us .

"Mitrovic is up there amongst the best in the league, he's the top scorer, so it's a big task for us as defenders to contain him."

Fulham vs Huddersfield Town: Danny Cowley says squad travel "with confidence"

Boss relishes challenge of taking on 'exceptional' Craven Cottage outfit

Huddersfield Town are relishing taking on an "exceptional" Fulham squad down at Craven Cottage.

That's the message from Danny Cowley as he aims for successive club away league wins for the first time since February 2017 (when QPR and Rotherham were the victims).

Cowley has been buoyed by Town's performances against Brentford and Hull City, when he was able to blood new faces Richard Stearman, Harry Toffolo, Emile Smith Rowe and Andy King.

The boss added goalkeeper Jonas Lossl to his list of January arrivals in the final hour of the transfer window - sealing a return of the Dane on loan from Everton for the rest of the season.

And while he acknowledges the challenge Town face in London, he says the Terriers go to Fulham with confidence on the back of four points from the last six.

"We've got virtually everybody back on the grass now which is a real positive," said the manager, who is forced to make at least one change with on-loan Liverpool goalkeeper Kamil Grabara ruled out for at least a month.

"Obviously we have a tough game against a very good Fulham team. They've got an exceptional squad, they've got a balance of depth and quality - they've got quite a lot of injury problems but they've got an unbelievable depth to their group that allows them to cope with it.

"It will be a really tough game. We anticipate a tough challenge but we go there with confidence.

"We're two unbeaten now and we've started to see some seeds of growth in the team from Tuesday night – there was certainly a lot of good parts to our play.

"We've had a good look at our performance and had a good session and will go to Fulham with a game plan and a motivation to maintain the levels we've got to in the last two performance, and try to get a result."

Town are 4/1 outsiders to take the three points, while league sponsors Sky Bet price Fulham odds-on to win at 8/11.

Six Fulham players are rated a better chance to score first than Town's leading marksman, Karlan Grant ( who is a 12/5 shot to open the scoring).

Cowley takes no notice of the bookmakers, however.

"It's a tough league. I think everybody can beat anybody on any given day. That's what makes it a great league because there's very little between first and 24th," he said.

"Fulham are one of the best teams in the division, there's no doubt about that. They've got probably the best players in the division, I think, and like I say real depth and quality to their squad. We understand the challenge in front of us but we're looking forward to it.

"They play a clear system, a clear style, they're a well-organised well-coached team, they have clear patterns and a real threat in the attacking third, real quality, a number of players who can create a moment out of nothing.

"We have to be on our guard and aware of that, but we also have to make sure we go there and pose problems ourselves.

"We're gaining confidence as a group by the day and that only comes from relentless hard work on the training pitch which allows you to build the relationships and the partnerships. When you do that naturally that creates a confidence the players can take forward."
