Mitrovic sends message to Fulham fans after Huddersfield win

Fulham beat Huddersfield town 3-2 in the Championship on Saturday.

Scott Parker's side had a three-goal lead after half-an-hour – Bobby Reid opened the scoring with Tom Cairney doubling the lead on 15-minutes, and Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring on his return from injury on the 30-minute mark.

The Serb had missed the last three through injury but had an emphatic return to action, scoring his 19th Championship goal of the season – here's what he posted on his Instagram after the win:

Fulham didn't make it easy on themselves. Before half-time, Huddersfield had pulled two goals back through Emile Smith-Rowe and Steve Mounie, but a goalless second-half ensured Fulham's fifth-straight home win in all competitions, and extends their unbeaten run in the Championship to four.

The win takes them up to 3rd in the table after Nottingham Forest's 2-1 loss at Birmingham City, and to within three points of 2nd-place Leeds United who succumbed to a 1-0 loss at home to Wigan Athletic.

It was an impressive transfer window for Fulham. They signed five players in Jordan Archer, Terrence Kongolo and Michael Hector, with Bobby Reid and Ivan Cavaleiro making their loan-deals permanent as well.

It's set them up for what should be a fruitful second-half of the season, as Parker eyes an immediate return to the Premier League in his first full-season in charge at Craven Cottage.

The return of Mitrovic will only bolster their promotion credentials – they fared well in his absence but his goals would be beneficial to any side, and they look set to challenge for automatic promotion.

Bobby: Very Clinical

Bobby Decordova-Reid says leaving Craven Cottage with a victory was the most important thing on Saturday.

After storming into a three-goal lead, Fulham seemed to be in cruise control until Huddersfield Town hit back with two of their own to ensure a tense second half.

"We got ourselves 3-0 up, put our chances away and were very clinical, but we shouldn't be letting them get back in the game," Decordova-Reid told the official website. "It was two sloppy goals we conceded and we know that, but we ground it out and at the end of the day got the three points.

"There's definitely positives to take, and there's also things we can work on, and we know that. We go into next week with three points behind us, and we have to keep on going."

The home faithful were treated to three marvellous goals; a solo effort from Decordova-Reid, Tom Cairney's volley, and Aleksandar Mitrović finishing off a slick team move.

Decordova-Reid got the ball rolling when he controlled a perfect cross-field pass from Michael Hector before jinking beyond Juninho Bacuna, dropping a shoulder on Richard Stearman and bending his shot past the goalkeeper.

"Yeah it was nice," the forward admitted. "It was a nice diagonal ball from Hec. I brought it down and [the defender] came quite close so I knew I could nick it past him.

"As I was running into the box I just thought I'm going to chop [Stearman] and see where it takes me! Then I'm one-v-one with the 'keeper and I just slide it.

"Like I say, we were very, very clinical. It took a bit of brilliance for us to score our goals, and we were deservedly 3-0 up and maybe should have gone on to score four, five or six."

Having reduced the deficit to just the one goal, Huddersfield sensed blood in the second half, with the Whites relying on a Marek Rodák masterclass to keep them at bay.

"Marek's been unbelievable since he's been in the team," Decordova-Reid said. "He's been pulling off unbelievable saves and we all know what he's capable of.

"We've got a big squad here and we know everyone's going to be needed. The players who have been on the bench and not in the squad, we know they're going to be able to step in and do a job, so it's a team effort and we're all going to keep on pushing."

Five thoughts: Fulham 3-2 Huddersfield

As Cam Ramsey takes the weekend off to head to a talk on Shakespeare's soliloquys, Drew Heatley slips into the shoes of Fulhamish's resident bard to give five thoughts on our win over the Terriers.

It's never a dull game against Huddersfield. And with Brentford winning convincingly in the lunchtime kick-off, the pressure was on to find our shooting boots against a side we typically enjoy netting against. And score we did. I just don't think we expected the second half we got when we were three up after half an hour. Still, a win's a win, and with Leeds faltering once again, the game can only be seen as a positive, with points once again on the board.

Secret squirrel success
Fulham Football Club has never been known for good communication. It's been the same ever since I became a fan in 1995. But the club's stepped the secrecy up a gear in recent months.

The wall of silence on player injuries has irritated some and baffled many this season, with rumours of Stevie Sess unrest and Harry Arter aggro abounding in their absence. But when Mitro was felled at the KCOM Stadium last month, we thought there was no way the North Korean-style comms could continue.

But when the Whites unveiled the Serb's name in the starting line-up on Saturday after just three weeks on the shelf, it all became clear. Did Huddersfield have a plan B should Mitro make an unexpected return? Maybe, but you've got to assume it wasn't their plan A. Bravo, Fulham – the big reveal certainly got a big cheer from us in the pub.

Brilliant Bobby bags
Rarely have loan players been taken into the warm bosom of the Fulham faithful as fast as Bobby Decordova-Reid. Even through a tough opening spell to his tenure in SW6, the affable forward quickly became a favourite at the Cottage.

But throughout, he was always talked about as nothing more than support to our main man Mitro, and in the Serb's suspension-unforced absence earlier on in the season, Kamara was chosen to lead the line against QPR (a decision quickly vindicated, of course). But the question was uttered, albeit quietly: "Does BDR have what it takes to take a game by the scruff of the neck?"

Fast-forward two months and Reid's put pen to paper on a permanent deal, much to our delight. And on Saturday he scrawled an exclamation mark by his signature with the opening goal. Picking the ball up on the right touchline (after a sublime ball from Hector), he drove into the box, Henry-style, wrong-footing at least two Huddersfield players in the process, and pinged the ball past a hapless Joel Coleman, showing us all he's much more than an energetic wide player with bags of potential.

Fantastic first thirty
What a start! When Fulham's in that kind of imperious mood, there's not a team in this division that can touch us. TC added to Reid's aforementioned stunner with our second. The Hammersmith End gasped in amazement when, after a ball in from Christie, our captain took the ball on his left and flicked it up to volley it in with his right! I'm not sure many were aware his right foot existed. And 15 minutes later, Mitro capped his return with another strike to bring him level at the top of the Championship's scorer charts. The striker flicked in a low ball from Bryan past Coleman in goal to make this football lark look easy.

At this point I think we were all expected a re-run of the 5-0 trouncing in 15/16 or the 4-1 win at the John Smith's in the same season. But it didn't turn out to be that straightforward.

Lamenting our lame left
It's been highlighted all season, but it really was a shame to concede both goals down our porous left side once again. Joe Bryan failed to clear a free-kick whipped into the box on 35 minutes, which was then pinged out to Arsenal loanee Emile Smith-Rowe, who beat BDR to the ball and fired past Rodak. Huddersfield's second came as Bacuna dispossessed Reid and charged down the pitch toward the Putney End, before finding Smith-Rowe who was miles ahead of Bryan. Smith-Rowe slots the ball into Mounié in the box and we suddenly had a nervous second half on the cards.

If Kongolo was brought in with a view to covering LB should Bryan's standards continue to falter, the rumoured season-ending injury to Mawson will have presumably put paid to that.

Marek the magnificent
It's no surprise Bettinelli's sat with splinters when Rodak puts in displays like he did Saturday. Simply put, we'd not have got a result if it wasn't for the young Slovak. His two saves at the start of the first half alone saved the game for us.

In my lifetime supporting the Whites, we've only had three 'keepers who were so good they'd be worth at least 10 points a season to you. First, there was Maik Taylor, then Van Der Sar, and finally Mark Schwarzer. The Aussie left SW6 in 2013, and we've had a fallow period since. (Kiraly, anyone?). But in Rodak, the signs indicate we've got an assured presence – and points contributor – back in the sticks once again.

Talking Points: Huddersfield

There were plenty of Talking Points after Fulham's eventful meeting with Huddersfield Town on Saturday. We've picked out five.

1. Calibre of goals

All three of Fulham's goals on Saturday were absolutely top notch, but for different reasons: Bobby Decordova-Reid – after being picked out by a fine Michael Hector pass – did it all himself; Tom Cairney showed that he's two-footed after all; and Aleksandar Mitrović put the finishing touch to a 28-pass move.

2. Rodák on fire

Marek Rodák showed just how valuable he is to Fulham, ensuring our three points that were seemingly in the bag did not get reduced to one or zero. After being a spectator for much of the first half, he made no fewer than six excellent saves in the second. Unsurprisingly he was voted Man of the Match and also appeared in the EFL's Team of the Week.

3. Three point gap

Huddersfield's frustrating afternoon was compounded by the fact that relegation rivals Wigan Athletic had won, which was good news for Fulham as they were away to Leeds United. That means the gap between us and the top-two is down to just three points, with 16 more matches still to play.

4. Mitro back with a bang

Aleksandar Mitrović's inclusion from the off was a welcome surprise to many inside Craven Cottage, with the striker managing to see out the entire 90 minutes. He showed no signs of rustiness, either, flicking home his 19th goal of the season exquisitely, and holding the ball up to critical effect in the closing stages of the match.

5. Defence to attack

All three of Fulham's goals were assisted by defenders. Hector demonstrated his array of passing when he sprayed it out to Decordova-Reid on the left flank, Cyrus Christie beat a man and spotted Cairney in the middle for number two, and Joe Bryan claimed his sixth assist of the season with a trademark delivery for Mitrović.

1 goal, 32 passes: This Fulham ace put in a workmanlike performance against Huddersfield on Saturday

Fulham beat Huddersfield Town 3-2 in the Championship on Saturday.

Scott Parker's side welcomed the Terriers into Craven Cottage, and had a 3-0 lead after only half-an-hour – Bobby Reid fired them into an early lead with Tom Cairney doubling the deficit after 15-minutes, and Aleksandar Mitrovic added the third on his return from injury.

The game looked all but out of Huddersfield's reach, and in the run-up to half-time the away side clawed two back, through Emile Smith-Rowe and then Steve Mounie.

It would've changed Parker's half-time team talk no end, but his side played out a goalless second-half to secure their third win in four in the league, whilst cementing 3rd-place in the Championship table.

Bobby Reid played an impressive game on Saturday, and here's stats from that day:

Parker's Fulham like to keep hold of the ball. They play a very possession-based game with lots of short, neat passes and Reid showed that he can fit that system with 32 passes throughout the game.

He's also proving to be prolific for Fulham – he took an age to get his first goal for the club but in the last two months, he's rediscovered his scoring touch and needed just the one shot to find the net on Saturday.

A real workmanlike performance from the Jamaican international, who chipped in with a tackle as Parker's possession-based game often takes a 'total football' form, with every player helping out in both attack and defence.

Fulham look like they're set for a promotion push. They had a hugely impressive transfer window with the permanent signings of both Reid and Ivan Cavaleiro being the headlines, and Michael Hector finalising his move from Chelsea has seen him become an important member of the team straight away.

With both Forest and Leeds slipping up at the weekend, a win for Fulham has pulled them to within two points of the top-two. Parker's side are looking for an immediate return to the top-flight after lasts season's disappointment, and what an achievement it would be in his first full-season in football management.

Man of the Match Result

Marek Rodák's phenomenal second half display has seen him named Man of the Match.

Fulham's comfortable lead had been reduced to just the one goal by half-time, and had Rodák not been on it after the break, Huddersfield Town would surely have taken something with them back to West Yorkshire.

Despite scoring twice, the Terriers didn't really threaten the Fulham goal much in the opening 45 minutes – something they rectified after the restart.

Karlan Grant was the visitors' main protagonist in front of goal, drawing a first Rodák save inside four minutes when the Slovak pushed his free-kick over the bar, before an even better save seconds later to keep out the Town striker's volley.

Grant was twice frustrated by Rodák in the 54th minute, with a double stop from close range keeping Fulham's noses in front.

Rodák wasn't finished, though, with further saves denying Grant again and Emile Smith Rowe, drawing praise from his Head Coach Scott Parker: "When he was called upon in the second half he showed composure and made some amazing saves."

There was only ever going to be one winner of Man of the Match, with Rodák claiming 83.6 per cent of the votes.

Michael Hector came in second with 5.6 per cent, ahead of third place Bobby Decordova-Reid (3 per cent).

2016 arrival is proving to be the final cog in Parker's Fulham puzzle: Comment

Kevin McDonald is enjoying his best spell in the Fulham first-team in over a year.

The Scot is a favourite at Craven Cottage. He's now in his fourth season at the club but since their promotion to the Premier League back in 2018, he's struggled with injury and subsequently game-time.

McDonald, 31, has started the past five of the last six games for Fulham (picking up a yellow card in each of them) to take his appearance tally to nine in the league this season, with 11 to his name in all competitions.

It was a calf injury that had kept him on the sidelines for so long. A niggling one which kept him on the peripheries of the first-team, in and out of the squad almost at will. But now he's looking as fit and as sharp as he ever has done in a Fulham shirt, and Scott Parker is reaping the rewards.

Of the last five games that McDonald has started, Fulham have won four of them and drawn the other. He's come straight into the side and into that anchoring-midfielder role, in the middle of a midfield-three with the likes of Tom Cairney and Stefan Johansen, or Josh Onomah either side of him.

This Fulham side that Parker has quickly amalgamated really suits McDonald's style of play and vice-versa – he's a delicate midfielder player who sees plenty of the ball, and will rack up a high amount of passes each game as he looks to switch the play from side to side.

He showed in Fulham's last game against Huddersfield that he can have a positive effect on the side in both attack and defence, and Parker probably couldn't imagine, or wouldn't want to imagine a side without McDonald in it now.

Parker has been understandably cautious with him. Of the last five that McDonald has started he's only competed two, and was left on the bench for Fulham's trip to Manchester City in the FA Cup last month.

Caution must not be thrown to the wind with a player who's been so fragile for so long. But everyone at the club has known for a time that he's a quality player – he played in all but one of Fulham's league games in their 2017/18 promotion-winning season and was a key component in that side too.

His return to the side has seemingly brought it all together. All that Parker has been working towards with this Fulham team is now in place and he has the calming, ever-reliable presence of McDonald to thank as they ready themselves for yet another promotion push.

3 things we learnt about Fulham in their win over Huddersfield

On Saturday, Fulham managed to overcome Huddersfield Town with a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage, however the game would have been closer than what manager Scott Parker would have liked.

Bobby Reid dribbled through the Huddersfield defence from the left wing before curling into the back of the net when one-on-one, before Tom Cairney volleyed in from inside the area after flicking the ball up.

Aleksandar Mitrovic then netted a third when he poked in Joe Bryan's cross, before Emile Smith-Rowe prodded in from six yards out to reduce the deficit.

Steve Mounie then slid in a Smith-Rowe cross, but Fulham managed to hold on for the three points.

Here, we take a look at three things we learnt about Fulham in their win over Huddersfield...

Hector is perfect for Fulham's style
Parker likes his Fulham side to keep the ball, and January signing Michael Hector is perfect for the way that he wants them to play.

His raking diagonal pass was straight to the chest of Reid, who was able to convert after racing through, while the experienced defender played a part in the second after finding a pass through to Cairney in between the line of Huddersfield's attack and midfield.

The defender was able to show his class on the ball as his ball retention and ability to pass long or short with accuracy played a big part in the victory.

Can't get complacent
As the Cottagers showed on Saturday, they proved that they can't get complacent against anyone.

Huddersfield scored two well-worked goals as Fulham couldn't get the ball off of them, and in the second half, they found themselves with their backs against the walls as they invited pressure onto them.

If Parker's side want to bounce back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking, then they will need to be arrogant while keeping cool heads and keeping things tight at the back in any given circumstance.

Rodak remains No.1
Marcus Bettinelli started the season off as the first choice for Fulham, however Marek Rodak has taken his spot in between the sticks over the last couple of months.

The Slovakian proved his worth on Saturday as his second-half performance kept Huddersfield at bay and ensured that Fulham were the ones taking all three points, as he made save after save to stop the Terriers from equalising.

If any Fulham fans had any doubts over Rodak's ability to be the first-choice keeper, then he would have kept them all quiet with his display on Saturday.

Fulham: Fans gush over Marek Rodak's display

Fulham moved up into third place in the Championship, closing the gap on Leeds United to just three points after they defeated Huddersfield Town at the weekend in a five-goal thriller. The Cottagers raced into a three-goal lead inside 31 minutes but the visitors battled their way back into contention when they pulled two goals back before the break.

Scott Parker's side were boosted by the return of Aleksandar Mitrovic, who managed to get himself on the scoresheet, but it was their Slovakian goalkeeper Marek Rodak who received all the plaudits after making six saves during Saturday's victory. Some have even compared him to a former Fulham hero.

A couple of fans compared him to former Craven Cottage 'keeper Mark Schwarzer, who made a whopping 220 appearances for the Cottagers.

What do we think?

Rodak, who is valued at £1.35 million (as per Transfermarkt), is just 23-years-old and his outstanding performance versus Huddersfield Town at the weekend has convinced many fans that he has what it takes to be a top goalkeeper.

So far this season, he has made 17 appearances in the league, conceding 17 goals and managing to keep seven clean sheets.

Rodak may have a long way to go before he'll be regarded in the same category as Schwarzer but given what we saw of him at the weekend, that cult hero status isn't beyond achievable.

4 Fulham youngsters you really need to keep an eye on

Fulham have a lot of exciting players in the making.

A club and a youth academy accredited with producing some fine talents in recent years – Roma's Chris Smalling, Moussa Dembele now of Lyon, and Ryan Sessegnon of Spurs to name a few.

Today, Fulham look to be producing youngsters and developing them at will – the likes of Jay Stansfield has broken into Scott Parker's first-team, whilst Marek Rodak has finally been granted his chance and Steven Sessegnon amongst others as well.

But what names can fans expect to see make their way into the first-team in the coming months? Here's four Fulham prospects that fans need to keep an eye on:

Ben Davies
Davies, 19, is a central midfielder hailing from Thailand. Of British descent, he was picked by the club during a scouting mission out in Asia, and has this season made his debut for the first-team – a late substitute appearance against Southampton in the Carabao Cup back in August.

Slight in stature, Davies is a nippy midfielder who covers plenty of ground and makes plenty of passes. He represents Thailand at U23 level and featured against both the Iraq U23 side and the Saudi Arabia U23 side last month.

Expect to see him work his way into the first-team slowly, learning from the likes of Kevin McDonald and Tom Cairney, and obviously the gaffer himself.

Tyrese Francois
Francois is an Australian midfielder who also made his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup against Southampton earlier in the season. He partners Davies in the U23 midfield and is another name who Fulham fans ought to be aware of.

He moved to London in 2013 with his family after signing for Fulham, and has been slowly climbing the ranks at Craven Cottage.

Francois' a physical midfielder who, like Davies, will cover plenty of ground and get stuck in – expect to see him breaking into the first-team or even heading out on-loan within the coming seasons.

Timmy Abraham
Younger brother of Chelsea and England striker Tammy, Timmy has recently joined Bristol Rovers on-loan for the remainder of the season.

He's been with Fulham since 2017. Previously at Charlton, Abraham initially came on trial at Fulham and having impressed, was signed up. Much like his brother in that he's a bustling striker, the 19-year-old Abraham is very physical for his age and blessed with prolific pace and power.

If his loan-spell proves a success this season, he could well be in Parker's first-team plans going into the next campaign.

Marlon Fossey
Fulham's American full-back has been exciting fans for some time, but is yet to be given his shot at the first-team.

He's been in the UK since 2010 and has been patiently working his way through the Fulham ranks, impressing at every level and becoming a prolific member of the USA youth sides – he helped the USA U20 side to their first CONCACAF Championship in 2017.

Fossey, 21, was also due to represent the U20 side at the U20 World Cup back in 2017 but had to withdraw due to injury, and his start to lasts season was delayed by a long-term injury as well.

This time round, he's managed to stay injury-free and has continued on his route to first-team football – expect to see him in contention for next season.

'They look in a fantastic position' – Assessing Fulham's January transfer window: Six Pointer

The January transfer window slammed shut on Friday evening, meaning clubs will now have to wait until the summer for their next chance to get some business done.

It always looked like it might be an important month for Fulham, who look on course to finish in the play-offs but will undoubtedly have aspirations of claiming one of the automatic promotion spots.

The West London club were relegated from the Premier League last season and currently sit third in the Championship–just three points back from second place Leeds United and four points off the top of the table.

With promotion aspirations in mind, Fulham looked to add some quality to their squad during the January window but what business have they done and how shrewd does it seem?

In today's FLW Six Pointer, we assess Fulham's transfer window in more detail.

"Fulham made five signings in January in total.

"The first, Michael Hector, had been agreed with Chelsea earlier in the season but the clubs had to wait until January for it to be finalised.

"Hector was not the only central defender to join the club during the winter transfer window, as Terrence Kongolo joined on loan from Huddersfield Town.

"The West London club also signed free agent goalkeeper Jordan Archer until the end of the season. The 26-year-old had recently seen his contract with Oxford United expire.

"Arguably their most important bits of business were the permanent signings of Ivan Cavaleiro and Bobby Reid.

"Both players joined the club on loan in the summer and have become important parts of Scott Parker's side, contributing a combined 11 goals and eight assists, so securing their long-term future looks a smart move."

Who left the club in transfer window?
"It was a pretty quiet window in terms of departures for Fulham.

"Defensive midfielder Ibrahima Toure has left the club permanently after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

"Forward Timmy Abraham has moved to League One side Bristol Rovers until the end of the season, while Jaydn Mundle-Smith has joined Maidenhead United on a one-month loan.

Were they close to losing anyone else?
"It is difficult to know just how close Fulham were to losing any other players but there were plenty of reports suggesting that interest was there.

"Sky Sports reported that Premier League club Watford were scouting left-back Joe Bryan but he remains a Fulham player.

"It was exclusively reported by Football League World's Chief Editor Sam Rourke that Marcus Betenelli was keen to leave Craven Cottage but a move never materialised.

"90min claimed that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in star striker Aleksander Mitrovic but Parker managed to keep hold of his key goal threat."

Has it been a good window for the West London club?
"Yes, I think Fulham and the club's fans can be pretty happy with how the January transfer window turned out.

"Their priorities heading into the window would likely have been to add some defensive reinforcements, sign some of their loanees permanently, and make sure they didn't lose any key players.

"They did all of those things, so it has to be looked at as a success."

Which is the most important bit of business?
"Only time will tell on this one, however, early indications are that Hector's arrival at the start of the month could be hugely beneficial–on both a short and long-term basis.

"The 27-year-old has come into Fulham's starting XI and had an impressive impact–helping them to go unbeaten in his first four Championship games, taking 10 points from a possible 12, and keep three clean sheets."

Finally, how do Fulham's promotion credentials look now the transfer window has closed?
"They look in a fantastic position.

"Fulham have continued to pick up points around the turn of the year and are now just three points off second.

"The added defensive stability could play a huge role in helping them to win promotion this season, as may keeping their squad together. We might just look back on the January window as a vital part of the campaign."
