March meeting with FFC rearranged

As you will know, our monthly meeting with Fulham FC would usually happen today (Monday 9th March).

As a result of precautions being taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection and minimise the risk to the first team squad, Fulham F.C. are restricting access to Motspur Park. This includes holding meetings with external groups and individuals.

This means that our usual monthly meeting will be rearranged. We understand the reasons for this, and the Club's decision has our support given the fast moving circumstances.

We have agreed to rearrange the meeting shortly via videoconference, and will raise this month's agenda items, including on the impact of coronavirus at football.

Thank you for your forbearance.

3 things we learned about Fulham after their draw with Bristol City

Fulham failed to gain ground on the Championship's top two on Saturday as they only managed a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

An 84th-minute Tom Cairney equaliser ensured the Whites came away with at least a point, but the result leaves them six points adrift of the automatic promotion places.

Nahki Wells opened the scoring for the Robins with a neat back post header, but Scott Parker will have been disappointed with the way the ball reached the former Burnley man.

With nine matches to play Fulham will need to start picking up more wins, having won just two of their last six matches, and face tough fixtures against Brentford and Leeds United over the next 10 days.

Here, we look at three things we learned from Saturday's game.

Fulham fail to make dominance count

Fulham were definitely the side on top on Saturday, creating more chances and dominating possession.

Bobby Decordova-Reid was particularly wasteful on his return to his old club, missing three presentable chances to put his side ahead.

With only five of their 19 shots hitting the target, Parker will also hope to see his side's shooting improve as they look to capitalise better on their advantage.

Sloppy defending costs points

While Fulham were the side on top, the Robins still managed to create a number of chances and had eight shots on target in total.

Wells' goal was a particular example of their defensive weakness on the day, with Parker's side wasting multiple opportunities to clear the ball before it fell to a grateful Wells.

Fulham have been solid defensively in general this season, but it proved their undoing on Saturday and cost them two points.

Cairney at his best

Cairney has been one of Fulham's best players for a few seasons now and showed why on Saturday.

With three key passes, four completed dribbles, 72 completed passes at 86% accuracy, three shots and one goal, he put in an excellent all-round performance and was at the centre of most of Fulham's good play.

His goal was also brilliantly taken, with the midfielder perfectly placing a left-footed effort from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

Anthony Knockaert shares brutally honest message following Fulham's draw with Bristol City

Fulham remain in the mix for an automatic-promotion spot in the Championship after sealing a 1-1 draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.

The Cottagers would have been aiming to continue their positive run of form following victories over Swansea and Preston last week, but they needed a late strike from Tom Cairney to secure a point in the south west after Nahki Wells' opener.

Fulham boss Scott Parker made two changes ahead of the meeting with the Robins, and one of these switches saw winger Anthony Knockaert drop out of the starting line-up for the first time in five matches as he was named on the bench.

Parker took this decision despite Knockaert having registered an assist during Fulham's win over Preston last week, but the Brighton loanee was only introduced in the 82nd minute as he replaced Tim Ream in the closing stages against Bristol City.

Knockaert took to Instagram after the match to share a surprising message where he admitted he played "awful" during his 10-minute cameo from the bench.

Knockaert has been a regular in the Fulham side this season after making 33 Championship appearances for the west London club, while the 28-year-old has scored three league goals and registered five assists during this time.

The Verdict

Knockaert has certainly been an inconsistent performer for Fulham since completing his loan move over the summer, and Aboubakar Kamara's impressive recent showings from the bench were enough to earn him a place in the side on Saturday.

This meant that Knockaert was limited to a brief cameo inside the final 10 minutes of the match, but he failed to make an impact during his short time on the pitch as he struggled to assert his credentials for a return to the side next weekend.

It will be interesting to see whether Knockaert's exclusion from the side is to be a permanent measure taken by Parker, with the Fulham boss having possibly lost his patience with Knockaert ahead of the Championship's crucial final run-in.

1 good and 1 bad from Fulham's 1-1 draw with Bristol City

Fulham drew 1-1 with promotion rivals Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday in what should probably go down as a missed opportunity for the away side.

Despite going behind to a poorly defended Nahki Wells header, Scott Parker's side had the bulk of possession and clear chances but were forced to wait until the 84th minute for a well-placed Tom Cairney eqauliser.

The results leaves them six points adrift of the automatic promotion places with just nine games to play, ahead of matches against Brentford and Leeds United in the next 10 days.

Here, we look at one good thing and one bad thing to come out of Saturday's match.

Tom Cairney hits top form
This was a really impressive performance for Cairney, who has been a consistent and important player for Fulham for a few seasons now.

While his equaliser was a lovely example of his tremendous ability, it was his overall impact that really set him apart, with his three key passes and four completed dribbles illustrating how involved he was in build-up play.

Some fans have gone as far as suggesting that Scott Parker's approach does not suit Cairney, but Saturday's evidence shows just how big an impact the Scotland international can still have in this team.

Errors at crucial moments
Despite having 57.2% of possession and 19 shots, Fulham made mistakes at crucial junctures in the game and it cost them what would have been an important three points.

Bobby Decordova-Reid was particularly responsible, with the attacker missing at least three good opportunities, while their defence was simply not good enough for Wells' opener.

For the goal, there were two occasions when the ball could have been cleared away, but Fulham were hesitant and eventually it fell to one of the Championship's best finishers and he did not miss.

If Fulham are going to close the gap on the top two, they must cut out the errors.

Fulham's Bobby Reid shares heartfelt message after Bristol City return

Bobby Reid is a graduate of the Bristol City youth academy.

The Bristol-born Reid made his first-team debut for the Robins in the 2010/11 season, but had his breakthrough several years later when he netted 19 Championship goals in the 2017/18 campaign.

He then left for Severnside rivals Cardiff City upon their promotion to the Premier League. Things didn't work out for Reid in the top-flight though and when Cardiff were relegated he sought a loan-move to Fulham, which later became permanent.

The 27-year-old has so far endured a tough season in-front of goal for Scott Parker's side, finding the net just five times in the Championship so far.

He remains a well-liked character though, and the past was forgotten when he received a warm(ish) welcome from the home fans on Saturday:

Bristol City started the better of the two and really should've won the game – Nahki Wells scored his second goal for the club midway through the second-half, but it was cancelled out by a fine goal from Fulham skipper Tom Cairney in the 84th-minute.

A win would've seen Bristol City into the top-six after Preston's defeat at home to QPR, whilst Fulham remain in 3rd and with a four-point gap to 4th-place Brentford.

The verdict

Reid is an important component of the Fulham attack – he works relentlessly in both attack and defence, but will likely be the first to admit that his goals record should be greater.

Bristol City fans would no doubt like for him to still be at the club, but he was a good servant, and he's now seeking a second bite at the top-fight with Fulham.

Leeds United star explains why he's not worried about West Brom or Fulham in promotion race

Jack Harrison has insisted that that Leeds United must continue to focus on themselves as the promotion race hots up.

The Whites recorded their latest victory against Huddersfield Town at the weekend – a result which has seen them move top of the Championship.

Tnere's still plenty of games to play between now and the end of the season, but the Man City loanee insists that their only focus is picking up points and not what West Brom or Fulham are doing.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Harrison said: "At this point in the season we just have to continue looking at us.

"We're focused on winning games and getting as many points as we can.

"If we get too caught up with everything that's going on around in the league then it adds unnecessary pressure."

Harrison added: "We don't need that.

"We just need to stay focused on ourselves and keep our heads down and keep taking it game by game."

"It was a good performance from the lads.

"We knew how important it was to continue this run, especially coming towards the end of the season.

"It's always nice to get that second goal and at the time we did.

"Then you have to try and manage the game from there. I think we've improved a lot on that this season."

The verdict

There's certainly a positive feeling around Elland Road this season.

Despite their recent slump in form, Leeds United are still in an excellent position to end their 16-year exile from the Premier League after getting back to winning ways.

The hope will surely be that the Whites can kick on to get themselves on a steady run of form between now and the end of the season.

If they can then surely you wouldn't bet against them going up.

Talking Points: Bristol City

Renewing acquaintances and penalty shouts are just two of the issues tackled in our Bristol City Talking Points.

1. 50th career goal for TC

Tom Cairney's equaliser was the 50th goal of his career. 36 of those have come for Fulham, nine for Blackburn Rovers, and five in his younger days at Hull City. He is our second highest scorer this season with eight goals to his name, a figure which matches the final tally he managed in his first campaign in SW6; 2015/16.

2. Penalty déjà vu

In the home meeting with Bristol City, Fulham fans and players alike were aggrieved when a big penalty call went against us in stoppage time. Our claim at Ashton Gate wasn't as clear cut on Saturday, but Cairney will still feel he had a decent case after goalkeeper Niki Mäenpää went through him to snatch the ball at the death.

3. Odoi stepping up

When Joe Bryan picked up a hamstring strain against Preston North End, Denis Odoi switched over from the right to the left hand side, something he did seamlessly. He came third in the Man of the Match voting that day, and he repeated the feat against the Robins. Not only did he defend resolutely, he was regularly involved in Fulham's build-up play, with his 91 touches of the ball bettered only by Cairney.

4. Abou in from the off

Following his blistering displays in a hat-trick of cameos from the bench, Aboubakar Kamara was rewarded with a starting berth in Bristol, and he did not disappoint. He only ever had one direction in his mind whenever he had possession, and was astute with his distribution, too. A runner-up spot in the Man of the Match voting shows that his efforts were appreciated by the Faithful.

5. Kalas appreciation

Tomas Kalas was an integral part of the Fulham squad during his two years on loan at Craven Cottage, and so there was a mutual respect between the defender and the travelling fans at the weekend, with each giving the other plenty of applause at full-time.

'I would drop him to the bench' – These Fulham fans are not impressed with this 26-y/o's recent displays

Fulham are still in the hunt for one of the Championship's automatic-promotion spots after battling to a 1-1 draw against play-off chasers Bristol City at Ashton Gate over the weekend.

The Cottagers were looking to build on a positive week which saw them seal back-to-back wins over Swansea and Preston, and Scott Parker's men will have felt satisfied to have left the south west with a point following Tom Cairney's equaliser after Nahki Wells put City in front.

The result means Fulham are now sitting six points adrift of second-placed West Brom following the weekend's results, but it should be noted the west Londoners have only managed to win two of their last five matches in their quest for a top-six spot this campaign.

This can be owed to some inconsistent attacking displays from the Cottagers which has seen them struggle to break teams down on occasions, with the likes of Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro having received some criticism despite the obvious quality they can bring.

Parker took the decision to replace Knockaert with Aboubakar Kamara in the starting line-up on Saturday, and one Fulham fan has now taken to the Fulham Football Club Facebook page to suggest that Cavaleiro should be the next player to be given a break from the team.

Plenty of Fulham fans responded to this suggestion by stating their agreement over a potential rest period for Cavaleiro, with some suggesting that the former Wolves man has struggled to deliver since his loan deal was turned into a permanent move in January.

Here are some of the responses...

Roger Burbidge: He hasn't really performed since we made his transfer permanent!

Barney Stupples: Kebano deserves a 3 game start.

Isaac Kitone: True. He's so low energy.

Ian Fox: Reid slots into that category too.

Jimmy Towner: I think he is very hot and cold. Much like majority of our so called better players. Knockaert and Cairney are the same. In my opinion if they all hit their best form at the same time, there would not be a team in the championship that would touch us.

Michael Fulham Bowden: The only thing he's done since he signed permanently was score in his next game and that's it. I would drop him to the bench for the next couple of games and stick Bobby on the left. I think we need our faithful 3 of Stefan Johansen Kevin MacDonald (or Harrison Reid) and Cairney in the middle with Kamara Mitrovic and Bobby up top.

'They take after the first team' – These Charlton fans are in disbelief over major blow for Under 23s

Charlton Athletic's Under-23 side fell short in their Premier League Cup last-16 tie with Fulham this afternoon as they suffered a 2-1 defeat after extra-time at The Valley.

There were a handful of first-team players named in the Addicks' starting line-up ahead of the clash including Chuks Aneke and Jake Forster-Caskey, with this pair recovering from injuries which have hampered their progress this term.

However, these two players could not prevent Charlton from suffering the loss as goals from Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Matt O'Riley sealed Fulham the victory following Josh Davison's opener for the south Londoners.

This Under-23s' defeat comes as the latest blow for Charlton following their recent run of disappointing form in the Championship, with Lee Bowyer's men having now lost their last three matches to plunge themselves into serious danger of relegation.

The Addicks have developed a concerning habit of conceding late goals so far this campaign, and this was the case in one of these three recent defeats as Sheffield Wednesday scored at the death to seal all three points back in late February.

It now appears as though Charlton's Under-23s have now become the latest victim of this alarming tendency in the club as they conceded in the 91st minute against Fulham to take the clash to extra-time, with Taylor-Crossdale finding the net before O'Riley's winner for the Cottagers.

Plenty of Charlton supporters responded to this goal in disbelief at the Under 23s' similarities to the senior side, with many fans suggesting there could be a problem running throughout the club with regard to losing focus in stoppage time.

Fulham: Fans discuss Cairney's social media post

Fulham were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol City and as a result, now find themselves six points off of the automatic promotion spots. The Robins took the lead through Nahki Wells before Tom Cairney levelled things after 84 minutes (as per BBC Sport).

Scott Parker's side won't have lost all hope of finishing in the top two but they may well feel like it's an opportunity missed having learned West Bromwich Albion were held by Swansea City. The Fulham captain Tom Cairney took to social media that evening and here is what some of the fans made of his post.
