Steve Wigley: U18s' Season So Far

Steve Wigley's Fulham Under-18s have come to life this year and their consistently impressive performances have propelled them to the top of the pile with 12 wins, four draws and just one loss.

Earlier in the season, Wigley refused to be interviewed after a game until his side lost and little did he know, he'd go around five months without giving one.

"I am a little bit superstitious as you can see," he admitted. "It's been an interesting season and I'm happy to talk about the boys, they deserve some recognition."

Wigley's side were tested before the start of the season, which he feels did the players the world of good ahead of their league opener.

"We had such a tough pre-season. We went out to a competition in Switzerland and met some top European sides and we were quite a bit younger than them. That was just a week before the season started. We turned up on the Saturday against Tottenham and were flying."

The Young Whites came out firing with a comfortable 4-0 win against Tottenham at Motspur Park. They were unbeaten in their opening nine games, gathering seven wins in the process and sending out a strong message to the rest of the league. They certainly weren't here to make up the numbers.

Working with a small squad is another factor Wigley believes has led to their success so far this season.

"We haven't got a big group and we purposely kept our numbers down to what we thought were right so that everybody would be involved."

He added, "At no stage have I thought as head coach that bringing in a player would weaken the team which is a great position to be in.

"But still, if I'm being honest, they've surpassed the expectations I had at the start of the season."

The strong individual performances have given a handful of players the opportunity to move up to the Under-23s and in some cases, the First Team.

Players such as Jay Stansfield, Sylvester Jasper and Fabio Carvalho have made an impact at a higher level and Wigley has been pleased with the improvements he's seen.

"A lot of them have gone on to train with the first team and done well," he said. "Jay [Stansfield] and Sylv [Sylvester Jasper] had their opportunity coming off the bench for the First Team.

"The most pleasing thing is that there's been a lot of individual development as the year has gone on. From what I saw in the summer to what I see now, there's been improvement across the board.

"As a team, there's a lot of players that can score a goal which obviously really helps when you're playing games. I'm obviously really disappointed that the season has been curtailed a little bit, but everybody of course completely understands why.

"From our point of view, I'd have liked to see how they were come the end of the season. We were about to approach a run of six games that I thought would really test us. The first was Brighton and Hove Albion and we dealt with that well. It's a shame but obviously there's more important things at the moment."

Wigley felt a change of formation could potentially make a positive impact, with lots of competition for a starting spot up front.

"We've got four strikers and they're all competing for two slots. We had to decide on a system which was suited to playing two strikers up top and, in the end, we went for the diamond formation."

He continued, "I've got to say, the staff, Anthony [Ross] and Ali [Melloul] did so much work on that. Before the season even started, we got together and decided on what we were going to do. For me as a coach, it's probably been 15-20 years since I played a diamond, everybody normally goes for formations like the 4-3-3."

Football clubs find themselves in an unprecedented situation which has impacted the academy just as much as the First Team.

"We knew that there would be every chance the players would be going home. We've managed to get the boys that live abroad on flights as we felt it was important that given their ages, they're with their families.

"We'll look to give them individual programmes, but they've also got to be slightly different than normal because usually we'd send them down to the local gym but soon they'll probably be closed.

"They need to be careful with their diets too. I don't know about them but for me, when I'm home there's definitely a tendency to eat a little bit more!

"Whether we'll play again this season, I don't know. I really hope we do because then we know that the virus is on the wane. If we were given a date for a return, then I'm confident we could be ready in two weeks to play football.
"Obviously at the moment there's a lot more important things like the boys' families and the loved ones of everybody working at this football club. They all have elderly relatives and so all we're doing at the moment is making sure that as an academy we're doing our best to minimise the spread."

How West Brom, Fulham and all of Leeds United's promotion rivals have reacted to the coronavirus crisis

A look at the measures being taken across the Championship

As we all know only too well, the 2019/20 Championship season is currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After being told last week that there would be no sign of any Championship football taking

Place until April 3, that period without a ball being kicked was extended until April 30 on Thursday morning, as the FA looked to try and combat the spread of COVID-19 across England.

This situation is completely unknown territory and is different for everyone in every walk of life.

But just how have Championship clubs been operating during this period? Some have had their players training as normal, with the hope that it will reduce their contact with the outside world, whilst others have been at home working on personal training programmes.

Here is a round-up of how every Championship club has reacted to the outbreak of the coronavirus...

Barnsley

The Tykes have told players to train away from the club for the time being, with them all being given individual training plans.

This has allowed players and staff to take a period away from the club, with Barnsley also planning to do a comprehensive antibacterial clean of club property during this time.

The club are continuing their policy of asking fans not to shake hands with players, or sign autographs or pose for pictures if they see them, and have postponed all scheduled visits from players.

Manager Gerhard Struber says he does not believe the season should be finished behind closed doors, and CEO Dane Murphy said the club's stance is that the campaign should be completed on the pitch.

Murphy has also revealed that staff who are able to work from home are now doing so.

Birmingham City

Birmingham did initially continue with training this week but on a strict lockdown, with no visitors and only essential staff allowed at the training ground.

Yet, after government advice changed on Tuesday, the Blues opted to cancel their training this week, with players being given a personal fitness and dietary programme.

The current plan is to return to training on Monday, but this is subject to change.

St Andrews is now being operated by a skeleton staff, allowing people to work from home where possible.

The club shop has been closed to the public, although online orders can still be collected from there.

Community Trust programmes have been cancelled until further notice.

Blackburn Rovers

Players and staff will have an extended period of time off as the club awaits to see whether their next scheduled fixture, against Leeds United on April 3, will go ahead.

Rovers' academy is operating on a reduced timetable, which will be monitored on a weekly basis, whilst every age group from under-16s downwards has been suspended.

Manager Tony Mowbray says the season must be completed, and not finishing it doesn't bear thinking about.

All Community Trust activities based at Ewood Park have been cancelled until early next month, but they will still be carrying out a limited number of projects and programmes outside the club whilst staff are available.

Trust staff have also been calling elderly participants from projects to make sure they are keeping well.

Blackburn's staff are permitted to work from home over the coming weeks, subject to staffing levels allowing the club to operate at a reduced level.

Essential maintenance and grounds work will continue at Ewood Park to ensure the stadium is in good shape for when football resumes.

Brentford

The Bees have closed Griffin Park to supporters, which has allowed staff to work from home.

Brentford Community Trust have cancelled or postponed a number of activities.

The club has not revealed whether training is continuing.
Bristol City

The Robins have told players to train away from Failand, issuing them with individual training plans and fitness equipment.

City also reminded fans to not shake hands with players or ask them for autographs or photos, as per public health guidance.

Robins Foundation have suspended all community activities until further notice, but will be continuing to support the community where possible. Those in need of assistance have been advised to contact the foundation.

Cardiff City

The Bluebirds have shut their training ground, with Neil Harris' training plans on hold.

They trained earlier this week but sent players home after government advice changed.

Harris revealed on Friday that one player and member of staff had gone into isolation as a precaution.

As many Cardiff staff as possible are now working from home, with defender Jazz Richards setting up a helpline and offering his services on social media to the most vulnerable.

The club have shut their ticket office and shop until further notice.

Cardiff City Foundation have suspended all face-to-face community and education activities until further notice.

Charlton Athletic

The Addicks have allowed staff to work from home as much as possible by closing their ticket office and club shop.

They have not announced whether the players will continue to be training during this period.

Derby County

Derby had given their players time off until Friday, treating this week like an international break.

Yet government advice over social distancing and working from home has made it unclear whether the Rams will resume training.

The club have ceased handling cash, accepting card payments from supporters only.

Derby's Community Trust have suspended the vast majority of their programmes, but they are working pro-actively to support vulnerable groups.

Fulham

The Cottagers have introduced temporary measures to allow club staff to work remotely.

Craven Cottage has closed for fans and external events, with Fulham encouraging fans to follow latest government advice.

Whilst there has been no official announcement, the Cottagers have reportedly opted to stop training this week.

Fulham Foundaction has suspended all non-school based activity.

Huddersfield Town

The Terriers have told their players to stay away from the training ground until Monday at the earliest.

Players have been given conditioning programmes to do at home, with each player having been handed a bib to record the work each player is doing.

Injured players are still reporting to the training ground but are isolated in small groups.

A call will be made later this week on whether they will definitely return to training next week.

All club staff have been told to work from home if they can and the Terriers' annual awards ceremony has been cancelled.

Interim CEO Mark Devlin has indicated the club's preference is to finish the season in front of supporters.

Hull City

Hull are arranging alternative working arrangements for all administration staff following government advice.

The club's stadium and ticket office are closed until further notice for all non-essential visitors.

Hull have told non-injured players to stay away from the training ground until next week, with the club's academy following suit.

Leeds United

Leeds players are training from home, with gym equipment sent to their houses along with a training programme and diet plan. Players will weigh in every morning and submit body fat and weight details.

The club will follow this approach for seven days and then reassess things.

Elland Road is now operating on a skeleton staff.

CEO Angus Kinnear has voiced his support for completing the season but has also stressed that the current approach should be one of patience.

Luton Town

The Hatters continue to train during the postponement of fixtures, with manager Graeme Jones saying it is business as usual aside from the lack of games.

Jones says he believes this will not only keep fitness levels up, but also improve players' immune systems and also prevent them from getting bored at home.

They have spread the players across four changing rooms and stopped serving them breakfast.

CEO Gary Sweet says the club have encouraged staff to work from home where possible, but says others are in a position where they need to attend Kenilworth Road.

Luton's stance is "the least-worst option" is to play the season out behind closed doors as quickly as possible.

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough were continuing to train as normal this week. The club have not announced any closures to the Riverside.

Millwall

Millwall have shut their stadium until Monday at the earliest, with the Community Trust also ceased its operations.
Nottingham Forest

Forest tested all of their players for the coronavirus after owner Evangelos Marinakis tested positive, with all of the results coming back as negative.

The players are currently keeping fit on their own, but the club have not announced any stadium closure as of yet.

Preston North End

Preston have cancelled all player appearances in the community, and only essential visitors are being granted access to their training ground.

Those who do go to the training ground and Deepdale must adhere to a personal health disclaimer.

North End's Community Trust have cancelled programmes until further notice.

Alex Neil has indicated his preference is to complete the season.

QPR

Manager Mark Warburton and CEO Lee Hoos both believe it is vital the season is completed.

QPR have shut their ticket office indefinitely whilst the club shop has been closed for this week.

There has been no official announcement on whether the players are continuing to train during this period.

Reading

Reading have continued to train this week, with any visitors to the training ground being asked to self-certify that they have not shown any symptoms of the coronavirus.

At the Madejski Stadium, work is being scaled back, with staff being asked to restrict non-essential meetings.

Earlier this week it was reported that no one had been told to work from home, but it is not clear whether this had changed after government advice changed.

Sheffield Wednesday

It was reported earlier this week that Garry Monk was continuing to take training as normal, although outside community events at the training ground have been suspended for the foreseeable future.

Staff are able to work from home rather than at Hillsborough.

There were no zero hours staff working at the club, meaning all staff will continue to be paid despite the lack of matches.

Stoke City

Stoke players have been given individual programmes to continue training away from the club's Clayton Wood headquarters.

At the Bet365 Stadium, the club's ticket office is now adopting a cashless policy following government advice, with just card payments being taken.

Stoke star James McClean has made donations to provide supplies for people in his hometown of Derry.

Swansea City

Swansea City have shut their training ground and academy until this weekend, when the situation will be reviewed.

The Swans' players have been given individual training programmes to complete at home.

Swans chairman Trevor Birch said the club will take steps within its control to mitigate the risk of the virus spreading.

The majority of the club's staff have been working from home since Friday, with a small amount remaining at the Liberty to maintain essential club and stadium operations.

Swansea's ticket office and club shop are both closed until further notice.

West Brom

The Baggies' original plan was to train through the enforced suspension, with Slaven Bilic initially deciding to put in place a schedule that was similar to an international break.

Yet when government advice changed on Monday, the club opted to halt group training, with players instead being given their own individual training plans.

Bilic felt this was necessary in order to reduce the risk to his players.

Off the pitch, the club have stripped back its activities, with the Hawthorns operating with a skeleton staff.

The club's ticket office and club shop have shut, with the Albion Foundation also encouraging staff to work from home where necessary.

Wigan Athletic

The Latics have closed the DW Stadium's ticket office, club shop and on-site restaurant until further notice.

Wigan's Community Trust have opted to suspend all community sessions until further notice.

The club have not said whether the first-team are continuing to train.

One year after links Leeds United might have missed out on top talent in Luca Murphy

Leeds United were said to be keen on a move for the Fulham defender.

One year ago, Leeds United were being linked with a move for talented centre-back Luca Murphy. The teenager was a free agent having left Hartlepool by mutual consent after a January deal to Fulham had fallen through.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Leeds were one of several teams interested in signing the talented youngster.

However, they were left wanting, as Fulham finally did get hold of their man. Murphy joined the Cottagers just weeks later. It was a controversial deal, with Hartlepool furious, as reported by the BBC. The club's chief executive Mark Maguire told the club's official website that the player, his agent and Fulham left a 'lot to be desired'.

So are Leeds United missing out?

It does seem as though Fulham have snapped up a potential gem.

The 18-year-old has been a star for the club's under-18 side this season. Things started very impressively, with two assists in his first two games from centre-back.

He has become a regular and has lost just one game in the under-18 Premier League with Fulham, who are top of their section of the league.

It seems Murphy has a future in the game and Leeds will be disappointed that they never managed to secure his signature.

Fulham FC legend believes the season should be cancelled

Fulham FC's record goalscorer Gordon Davies outlined the potential issues with a number of proposals which have been suggested regarding how to finish the league season off.

Football in Britain has come to a grinding halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally the Premier League and the EFL stated that the league season would be suspended until 4th April at the earliest but yesterday it was confirmed that this has now been pushed back further to April 30th at the earliest.

Many do not think we will see a professional game of football between two sides for several months with the country trying to comprehend how to fight against this virus.

Trying to figure out how to resume the league season in order to finish the 2019/20 campaign has seen many varying opinions; some have called for the season to be null and void, others believe it just has to come to an end at some point even if it means the current season continues into the late months of 2020.

Speaking to Miles Blumson on the Fulham Fans Show, Fulham's record goalscorer Gordon Davies went through those various options as to how the season could finish but found faults with many of them, emphasising what a difficult decision the league officials have to make.

"Well it's a catch twenty-two situation. You've got a situation that everybody is in now that they just don't know when they're going to be back training properly with the squad, with the staff.

"Is the season going to start? Has it already finished? When will it start again? Or has it finished for good?

"This could go on for months. As I said earlier, you sometimes only need to play one or two games, if we start the league back again and then one player or one manager goes down with a positive [COVID-19] test and you could be back to square one. And I think if that did happen, then I think the EFL would stop it straight away and say 'right, we've tried it and it's not worked. We've got another two or three month delay. It is now going to be null and void'.

"They obviously want to try to finish the season in all the divisions but what I've got a problem with is that they have to finish the divisions and whatever they decide to do has got to run through our pyramid system- it has got to go through the National League, it has got to go through the divisional leagues.

"If they turn around and say we've got to promote the top two and relegate the bottom three or whatever, then they've got to do that in every division from top to bottom and I just cannot see that happening.

"Any decision they make, apart from finishing the season, is going to be a legal nightmare for every club that thinks they have been hard done by and it's going to be a legal nightmare for the EFL. To be perfectly honest with you, we would probably run into not millions but billions of compensation for clubs because it's just a mind-field when you've got to make a decision like this before a season that may finish.

"That's why i'm going down the cancellation route because whoever gets relegated, they're going to use cases in the past where people have gone to the last game of the season and got out. And similar with promotion, what do you do? Do you promote West Brom and Leeds and then say Fulham can't go up because they're not in an automatic position. Do you try to play just four or five games with the four teams in third, fourth, fifth and sixth behind closed doors?

"Those in seventh, eighth, ninth or even tenth are close enough to say: 'well hang on a minute, we've got a chance of getting into those playoffs so we need compensation for not being allowed the chance to get into the playoffs'.

"An absolute nightmare and I don't anticipate whoever is making a decision but I think they're going to leave it as long as possible and then it's going to be one decision and that is it."

FC Sion sack nine players for reportedly not taking pay cut because of coronavirus crisis

Former Arsenal player Alex Song (left) and Johan Djourou (right) are among those sacked by Sion

Swiss Super League side FC Sion have sacked nine players who reportedly refused to sign an agreement for a wage cut during the coronavirus crisis.

Former Arsenal players Alex Song and Johan Djourou and ex-Fulham midfielder Pajtim Kasami are among those confirmed as being dismissed by the club.

The league was indefinitely stopped on 1 March after the government banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people.

Sion are eighth in the 10-team league, four points clear of the drop zone.

There are 13 matches to play once the season resumes.

Captain Xavier Kouassi, former Newcastle loanee Seydou Doumbia, Ermir Lenjani, Mickael Facchinetti, Christian Zock and Birama Ndoye are the others to be sacked.

Fulham, Chelsea and QPR respond to 'unprecedented situation'

All top level football matches have been suspended, with the suspension now extended until at least 30 April.

The Football Association has also agreed that the current season can be "extended indefinitely".

The suspension, announced on Friday 13 March included a West London Derby between Fulham and Brentford match which was to take place at Craven Cottage.

Fulham FC said at the time: "Following this morning's latest announcement from the EFL, the Club can confirm that this evening's scheduled fixture against Brentford has been postponed.

" As was specified in the statement, the Football League will be suspended until at least April 3rd, meaning that our fixtures against Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers will also be postponed.

" We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we trust fans understand the unprecedented situation we find ourselves in.

" We will provide details regarding rearranged dates, future fixtures, and related ticketing information when available."

Fulham's statement followed an announcement made by The FA, Premier League, EFL and Barclays FA Women's Super League and FA Women's Championship, saying they have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game in England until 3 April at the earliest.

They said: " This action, which will be kept under constant review, has been taken due to the increasing numbers of Clubs taking steps to isolate their players and staff because of the COVID-19 virus.

" The postponements include all matches in the Championship, League One and League Two, as well as all Academy and youth team fixtures.

" In addition, Clubs are being advised to suspend indefinitely all non-essential activities which include, but are not limited to, player appearances, training ground visits and fan meetings.

" Whilst the EFL Board has continued to take the advice and guidance offered by the Government and its health advisors, emerging developments mean now is the time to implement football's contingency plans in response to the crisis."

Chelsea FC meanwhile annnounced the cancellation of this week's EUFA match against Bayern Munich and a number of personnel at the club, including the first team squad, now self-isolating after player Callum Hudson-Odoi had a positive test result for Coronavirus.

The club says: " Chelsea personnel who had recent close contact with the player in the men's team building will now self-isolate in line with Government health guidelines. These will include initially the full men's team squad, coaching staff and a number of backroom staff.

" It is expected that those who did not have close contact with Callum will return to work in the coming days. In the meantime, the men's team building, one of several separate buildings at our training ground, will remain closed. The rest of our training facility, Stamford Bridge and our other facilities are operating as normal.

" Callum displayed symptoms similar to a mild cold on Monday morning and has not been at the training ground since then as a precaution. However, his test came in positive this evening and he will undergo a period of self-isolation.

" Despite testing positive for the virus, Callum is doing well and looking forward to returning to the training ground as soon as it is possible.

" We will continue to adhere to Government and Public Health Guidelines with regard to our facilities and staff and will be discussing next steps with regards to upcoming fixtures with the Premier League on Friday morning. We will provide further updates as necessary via the club's website. We wish Callum a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to the club soon."

On Twitter, Callum Hudson-Odoi tweeted @Calteck10: " Thank you for all your good wishes, as I said in the video I'm feeling good and hope to see you all soon!"

Chelsea also announced the cancellation of this week's match, saying: " All matches in UEFA competitions next week have been postponed, including our trip to Bayern Munich, because of the spread of Covid-19 in Europe and related decisions made by different governments.

" The fixture in Germany, scheduled for Wednesday 18 March, was going to take place behind closed doors but will now not be happening at all next week. UEFA have said further decisions on when the match will take place will be communicated in due course.

" All other Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Youth League matches have been postponed. As a consequence of those postponements, the Champions League and Europa League quarter-final draws scheduled for 20 March have also been postponed.

" UEFA will further discuss European football's response to the outbreak at a videoconference meeting on Tuesday 17 March. "

QPR say that tickets purchased for home fixtures against Barnsley (Saturday 14 March) and Fulham (Saturday 21 March) will be valid for the rearranged fixtures, once/should these be confirmed.

Tickets purchased for the away fixture against Charlton Athletic (Tuesday 17 March) will also remain valid for the rearranged fixture.

If a refund is required for any fixture these will be dealt with once the re-arranged date has been confirmed. Like many businesses at this time, club staff are now operating remotely and are therefore unable to process refunds at this time due to GDPR regulations.

The Box Office will be closed until further notice and the QPR Superstore is also closed, but supporters can still make online purchases here.

Fulham legend Gordon Davies gives verdict on Championship top-two race

Fulham's all-time record goalscorer Gordon Davies remains confident about his former sides chances of finishing in the Championship's automatic promotion places.

Prior to the break for COVIC-19, the Whites were on a four-match unbeaten run in the league and found themselves just six points behind second-placed West Brom and a further point adrift of leaders Leeds United.

Despite their recent form, Fulham have endured some damaging results in recent months, including disappointing home defeats to both and Reading and Barnsley, the latter cost Scott Parker's men the opportunity to remain on level points with Leeds.

However, with nine games left remaining and trips to both of the top-two on the horizon, Davies, who scored 178 during his six years at Craven Cottage, reckons that promotion to the Premier League automatically is still very possible for the West Londoners.

Davies spoke to the Fulham Fans Show Love Sport Radio last night and said: "I've been on the positive side of your question from day one. I thought that we could finish in the top two. I've said that all season, I still think that we can finish in the top two. I know i've been slaughtered by some Fulham supporters for saying that and still saying that.

"But it's something that I believe because yes, Leeds went through a dodgy patch- they've come through it- West Brom are now starting to hit a dodgy patch.

"It is difficult when you've got nine games left. We only need one game where we win, West Brom lose and then you're three points behind them and that's then with eight games to go, so that is nothing to catch up over eight games.

"So even if we both win three games on the trot, you're still only that one game behind them and as you say, we've got to play them and it could be, probably, one of the biggest games of the season.

"When you look at the fixtures that are remaining now, the three cancelled fixtures we would have- Brentford, Leeds and QPR- you win games like that and then you've got to play West Brom as well, anything can happen. I definitely think we can still catch the second spot.

"I've got a feeling Leeds have had their bumpy period, they are still going for the jugular in every game that they're playing in and they're scoring goals and winning games late on, that is one thing that sometimes we don't do.

"So I still think we can finish second, definitely, but I think the top spot, unless it is a bit of a miracle, is out of our grasp now."

The Verdict

Given the current gap and amount of games remaining, making up six points does look a big ask at present for Fulham, but with games to come against both Leeds and West Brom before the end of the season, anything remains possible.

The Baggies still face difficult-looking trips to Brentford Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn, meaning some favours elsewhere and victory at The Hawthorns, could open the door for Parker's men, although they can't afford any more slip-ups at this stage in the campaign.
