Sellers played a James Bond impostor, whereas Woody Allen played a villain named Jimmy Bond. Niven as you say did play James Bond

I'm also going to give credit to Roger Moore. He could never have played Bond the way Connery did so had to go in a different direction, that was the only way he could do it. It reopened it for Dalton and Craig to go back to a gritty character. More in line with the books.

Dalton. He was a perfect balance of the grittier side (later pushed further by Daniel Craig) and the charm (overdone to the point of ridicule by Roger Moore). He was also closest to the Bond in the novels for me.

Closely followed by Connery (obviously!) and Daniel Craig (who basically saved the franchise following the last two awful Brosnan ones - invisible car etc!).

Did you know that Bob Holness once played 007? I cannot recall when or where but I heard this a while back.

Yet you may not know this, but Bob Holness' CV has another major entry on it, something that might just win you a pub quiz one day. For even before Sean Connery took on the mantle, Bob Holness was one of the first people ever to play Ian Fleming's secret agent, James Bond 007. We are not making this up.

He wasn't the first. That honour goes to Barry Nelson, who took the role of Bond in an hour-long take on Casino Royale, that was shown as part of the CBS' Climax! Mystery Theatre television programme in the United States. That particular production dates back to 1954, and is believed to be the first ever 007 adaptation. But our Bob wasn't far behind. He became what's thought to be the second man to officially play James Bond, this time in a radio adaptation of Fleming's book, Moonraker. The same Moonraker that would turn into a not-much-loved Roger Moore movie, two decades later.

I prefer the take of Bond played by Daniel Craig, and think he does a fantastic job with the more gritty, problemed character. I do love the Sean Connery films and would be surprised if he doesn't win on this poll as many of you will see them as the original nostalgic Bond films. Weirdly my favourite film was the Lazenby Bond, 'On her Majesty's Secret Service'. The location and drama of it was excellent including the bobsled chase (which was a much harder sequence to create back then), and the ending left me gutted for days on end. I'm not someone who usually gets emotional watching films.

Agreed. Not the best Bond. But one of the beast movies.

It also has the best music of any Bond movie.

Voted Sean Connery , I watched all the first few films , they were like magic almost back in the day,
But now - not because of any particular actor - I think they're corny . But I'm no big film watcher prefer documentaries .

Women always say Connery.  His character was less nuanced back then.  The hairy chest.  The direct approach.  Compare that character to the one created by the scripts for recent iterations with Craig or Brosnan.  Internal conflicts, more gray area where once was only good and bad in stark relief.  Bond himself changed with the times. The 'best' Bond is really a choice between differently shaded characters.  BTW, anybody seen "A Fine Madness" or "The Hill".  Those were great Connery movies.   "Finding Forester" a very good movie.  Everyone can just forget about "Zardoz."

The Hill was a classic film, one of the best and most original i have ever seen, great acting and great characters, brilliantly directed and reminded me of my days in the Military Police.

Missed the vote but for me, a child of the 50s it has to be Daniel Craig. Although a lot of my adult wishes have been from the Sean Connery time such as Aston Martin cars, Rolex watches and dress sense although I always thought Pierce Brosnan was the best dressed. Sadly I still do not own an Aston Martin, Rolex or Saville row suits, although if they are reading this and wish for me to advertise their wares just need to contact me. I won't hold my breath as the same goes for golf equipment providers, they won't even pay me not to use their stuff.
