The streets should forget: Nostalgia bias has blinded too many fans

Nostalgia bias, also known as rosy retrospection is a social phenomenon that academics have been trying to get to grips with for years.

The general idea is that people romanticise things from their youth and remember them for being better than they actually are, whether that be films, foods or their favourite holiday destinations, and it seems that football isn't exempt from this bias either.

It seems that every other day we're seeing highlight clips of average players who 'the streets won't forget', with many fawning over former Premier League players who don't deserve such adulation.

The above tweet has over 41,000 likes and almost 15,000 retweets, and it features such players as Bryan Ruiz and Adel Taarabt, and as someone who has had the misfortune of watching both players turn out for my club, I can tell you that 'the streets' are remembering them both wrongly.

Ruiz arrived as a £10m signing on deadline day in 2011 after banging in 35 league goals in 65 games for FC Twente in the Eredivisie, but his first Premier League season saw him score just twice, with both efforts being rather fantastic chips against both Everton and Bolton.

In the end, he would score just 11 goals in 97 league appearances for the Whites, including just four in 29 in the Championship, having to go down as quite a massive flop, considering he was the club's biggest signing that summer.

Taarabt was a similar story, the Moroccan was undoubtedly one of the Championship's best players during QPR's promotion season, netting 19 in 44 from midfield, but once he got into the big leagues, he faltered, netting just seven times in 77 Premier League appearances for both the R's and Fulham.

The former Tottenham man did have a trick or two up his sleeve, and his nutmegs and stepovers do make for good montage videos that can be shared on social media, but when you're seeing people lament him as if he was the West London's answer to a prime Ronaldinho, you can't help but wonder if anyone remembers actually watching him for a full 90 minutes.

No harm is being done in enjoying these clips, and there is plenty of skill on show here, but it's leading to a generation of fans glorifying an average bunch of players from an era where there are plenty of footballers worth remembering.

Leeds United's promotion bid backed as rivals slated for failing to grasp opportunity

The Whites are currently seven points clear of third-placed Fulham in the race for promotion with just nine games left to play

Gary O'Neil believes Leeds United may suffer as a result of playing behind closed doors when the Championship resumes - but he is still backing them for promotion to the Premier League.

The Championship season will resume on Saturday, June 20, with live coverage on Sky of Brentford's London derby against Fulham.

That game will be followed by title-chasing West Brom taking on Birmingham City in the 3pm televised slot.

A day later, and United kick-off their campaign when they travel to tackle Cardiff City.

The Whites are seven points clear of third-placed Fulham in the race for promotion with just nine games left to play.

Marcelo Bielsa's side also hold a one point advantage over fellow promotion chasers West Brom at the top of the table.

Leeds' remaining fixtures, which were released on Monday, appear to be the easiest on paper, but as Whites fans know, that means nothing in the final weeks of the season.

However, O'Neil feels that both the Whites and Albion will be too strong for the chasing pack and will secure a return to the top-flight.

He told Sky Sports: "I think so. We saw that wobble quite a bit earlier on in the season, didn't we?

"It seemed to give the rest a chance, but the chasing teams didn't really take that opportunity.

"Fulham didn't take advantage of it and West Brom and Leeds have managed to build that gap again.

"It will be interesting to see how they come back from this little break they had. Especially going to Leeds with no fans in the stadium may be easier for teams, because it is quite a hostile place.

"Whereas Fulham doesn't have that feel anyway. When you go to Craven Cottage it is always a friendly and nice place. So it may be a slight advantage in it for Fulham.

"But I would be very, very surprised if the top two don't go straight up."

Birmingham City: EFL wins appeal but Blues avoid further points penalty

Birmingham City are 16th in the Championship table

The English Football League has won its appeal against an independent disciplinary commission's decision to clear Birmingham City of a misconduct charge, reports BBC Radio WM.

However, the Championship club will not be deducted any points.

Blues were originally cleared on 6 March and a new commission was appointed to hear the EFL's appeal.

The charge was brought against the club in relation to an alleged breach of an agreed business plan.

That was implemented after Blues were deducted nine points last season for breaching the EFL's profitability and sustainability rules.

Blues' nine-point penalty in March 2019 came after incurring losses of nearly £48.8m between 2015 and 2018 - almost £10m more than the accepted adjusted losses of £39m over a three-year period under EFL rules.

After initially being cleared of the second charge in March, Birmingham said they had been working "closely and amicably" with the EFL on the matter since May last year.

Birmingham will resume league action on 20 June against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns lying 16th in the Championship table - eight points above the relegation zone with nine games remaining.

Analysis
Richard Wilford, BBC Radio WM

Birmingham City will hope that this latest ruling finally draws a line under a difficult period for the club.

The St Andrew's board had strongly contested the charge of breaching the business plan imposed by the EFL.

It is worth recalling that the club pleaded guilty to last year's charges, taking a nine-point penalty. They were then restricted to five signings for the season, all of whom had to be free transfers or loans, with limited salaries.

Needing to raise further revenue to satisfy the EFL's business plan, they were understandably reluctant to sell key assets such as strikers Che Adams and Isaac Vassell for bargain prices in the January 2019 transfer window, especially with no scope to recruit replacements. Both commanded higher fees when sold in the summer window.

Birmingham have paid the penalty for overspending that was largely concentrated on the summer of 2017. After taking on board the lessons from that period of time, they will now have to show that they can continue to live and compete within their means.
