Accidental or not a handball by an attacker will almost always alter the trajectory of the ball and/or the speed with which it arrives at a certain point from where a colleague (or the handler) scores which casts doubt as to whether the goal would have been scored without it. So on balance from that perspective it should probably always be disallowed.

In the "good old days"  if the ref missed the handball the linesman would have been flagging furiously to get his attention and tell him what had happened.
Nowadays I'm not sure what linesman, er....I mean assistant referee's do apart from giving throw ins and they don't do that very well
