The 26-year-old helped the Cottagers to promotion

Aleksandar Mitrovic has been named Fulham Fans' Footballer of the Year for 2020.

2020 saw the Serbian striker help lead the Cottagers back to the Premier League and finish as the Championship's top scorer for the 2019/20 season.

Mitrovic was up against othe promotion heroes in Joe Bryan, Marek Rodak and Michael Hector but was the standout candidate.

Reach plc, via our network of newspapers and websites, asked you to have your say on what has been an extraordinary year, in more ways than one.

Beset by the coronavirus pandemic, huge obstacles have been put in the way of the Premier League in 2020. But football responded.

We may not have been able to see our favourite players very much in the flesh, reduced to watching on from home, but when it comes to having our say on the beautiful game, everyone's got an opinion.

What initially looked to be a formality, Liverpool won their first title in 30 years, having to wait longer than any other team in history to do so thanks to Covid-19.

Marcus Rashford has led calls for change from the Government when it came to free schools meals for the under-privileged.

There have been plenty of standout moment and we asked our journalists and you the fans to have your say on who has been the Footballer of the Year for 2020.

And while there can be only one overall winner, we have club specific triumphs too, thanks to our network of more than 100 reporters and the votes of more fans than watched the 2019 FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The top five: 1. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), 2. Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), 3. Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), 4. Kevin De Bruyne (Man City), 5. Jordan Henderson (Liverpool).

Fulham fans comments after Newcastle United match – Some strong messages here

Fulham fans with plenty to say after Saturday's 1-1 draw at St James Park.

No surprise that the incident just after the hour mark was a massive topic of discussion, with Callum Wilson awarded a penalty and Andersen sent off for the visitors.

Even less of a surprise that Fulham fans felt they were cheated by VAR and the match officials.

For Newcastle supporters, of particular concern is that Fulham fans are the latest in a long line of opposition fanbases to worry about playing Newcastle United, then afterwards finding it difficult to believe how bad NUFC actually are, especially with the ultra negative Steve Bruce tactics.

Callum Wilson seen as the big villain for his dive to win the penalty, whilst interesting to see that the love affair for Fulham fans with Aleksandar Mitrovic looks well and truly over...

Fulham fans commenting via their Fulham Web message board:

'We will need to up the tempo at home to Southampton because they are a darn sight better than Newcastle for sure.

Points dropped now against teams around us will make it a close-call between teams around us come spring.

We cannot afford to turn up against poor teams like Newcastle and play so casually like this.'

'We played with plenty of urgency. It was only the lack of a competent striker (what the hell has happened to Mitro ? ) and a complete c.nt of a referee that stopped us winning.'

'This from a Newcastle fan on the BBC website. "We have 13 men on the pitch (linesman/ref) and Fulham have 10, and Fulham are still better"

'At least their fans are honest...'

'Genuine question. After watching MOTD and listening to Lineker and two ex Newcastle players say that it was a clear dive, will Andersen have his red card rescinded on appeal?'

'Sadly watching this and lots of other matches it just proves that a lot of footballers are cheats and I've not seen one punished since VAR came in.'

'What was the point of playing Mitrovic , he was so off the pace.'

'Time to shop him around a lot of championship clubs would snap him up at a decent price, thought we were too slow again in build up but should have three points if not for poor ref and var again.'

'Mitro? Is he going to China in January or what? Detached, sloppy, out of shape...'

'It would take a China-man drunk on too many Sakes to buy an out of shape Mitrovic.'

'It looks as if we are a hard side to beat but fear not.

Aided by var and our own stupidity, we will always give the opposition a chance to draw level.

Last 2 games against Liverpool and Newcastle, we should have been out of sight at half time.

Afraid this is relegation syndrome. We have to get some 3 pointers, which means a new striker and send Loftus Cheek back to Chelsea.'

'We can't trust the referees, only way we can survive relegation is getting a two nil lead to cover any mistakes that are sure to come. We should have had three points from Liverpool and Newcastle, we were woeful against Brighton though.'

'Still fuming about the sending off that cost us three valuable points and the loss of Andersen for three important games.

The laws of the game and a sensible viewpoint make the decision to red card and award a penalty on this circumstance incorrect for a number of reasons a) if the ref deems there to be a foul then it occurred outside the penalty box, result red card and free kick b) if the ref has missed the first offence and deems the foul took place on the penalty box line then he needs to deem this as a clear attempt that the player has not attempted to play the ball, it is clear on every angle that Andersen has not deviated his leg to trip Wilson, indeed Wilson's run has cut across Andersen and in that regard it is a coming together and not a foul.'

'A decent performance although Mitro looking worse every time I see him. we need a striker/goalscorer to complete our much improved team.'

Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle look to snap up £16m Portuguese defender Jorge Fernandes after impressive start to the season with Vitoria Guimaraes

Jorge Fernandes is attracting interest from Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle
The 23-year-old centre-back has been the star for Vitoria Guimaraes this season
Vitoria have only conceded two goals when Fernandes has played this season
The Portugal U21 international is already being valued in the £16million bracket

Portuguese defender Jorge Fernandes is attracting attention from Premier league sides Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle United.

The 23-year-old centre-back has been starring for Vitoria Guimaraes who are coached by former Chelsea midfielder Tiago Mendes and are fifth in the Portuguese Liga.

Indeed, Vitoria have only conceded two goals when Fernandes has played this season with the 6ft 4ins Portugal U21 international proving a key component of their defence and catching the eye of a number of scouts in the process.

A product of Porto's academy, Fernandes is a ball playing centre-back who had spells on loan at Portuguese side Tondela and last season at Kasimpasa in Turkey.

Vitoria moved to sign him for a bargain £720,000 in the summer but he is already being valued in the £16million bracket.

Portuguese clubs have struggled financially following the coronavirus pandemic and are having to make tough decisions regarding the sales of some of their brighter prospects.

Premier League sides are equally reluctant to fork out big fees but recognise players such as Fernandes can prove an asset in the long-term.

Many English sides are searching for new defenders ahead of the January window though some will wait until the summer before they splash out substantial fees.

Fulham player back on club's agenda for transfer – January move possible on one condition

AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has a limited number of quality midfielders currently available at his disposal after Sandro Tonali and Ismaël Bennacer picked up injuries this month.

Rade Krunic hasn't convinced the 55-year-old, and hence, the Serie A side are looking to strengthen the midfield in the winter market.

According to Calciomercato, Fulham's André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Lille's Boubakary Soumaré are back on the Rossoneri's agenda.

Milan looked at the Cottagers midfielder and Soumaré in the summer. However, they decided not to make an approach for either of them in order to bet on Krunic. That decision hasn't paid off.

Another report from the same outlet once again explains the Fulham player and the France U21 international are included in the Italian club's list of central midfield targets for January.

It's claimed Pioli's side have viewed the pair as possible solutions in January, but only on a loan deal.

There's no mention if either Anguissa or Scott Parker's side are open to the idea of considering a loan move next month.

Anguissa spent last season on loan at Villarreal, and has regained his place at Craven Cottage this term. He's made 14 appearances in the league for Fulham.

Jorge Fernandes to Southampton: Vitoria's transfer stance, £16m fee, Fulham and Newcastle links

Southampton are one of three Premier League clubs to have been linked with a move for Portuguese defender Jorge Fernandes, who has impressed for Vitoria Guimaraes

The January transfer window is fast approaching for Southampton and their Premier League rivals.

It is now less than two weeks until the January transfer window opens, with clubs preparing moves to try and strengthen their squad ahead of the run-in to the 2020/21 season.

Saints have enjoyed a great start to the campaign, with seven wins from their first 14 games this season in the Premier League helping Ralph Hasenhuttl's men up to 24 points and sixth place in the table.

But will Saints be doing any business in January to try and boost hopes of a push for European football?

They have been linked with a number of players ahead of the window opening, with Portuguese defender Jorge Fernandes the latest.

Below, we take a look at the latest on the links.

Southampton's interest

The 23-year-old centre-back is a reported target for three Premier League sides ahead of the January transfer window.

He has been impressing for Vitoria in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, starring as Tiago Mendes' side have only conceded twice with him in the side this season.

As a result, a number of scouts have been watching the 6ft 4ins defender with interest, with the Daily Mail reporting that Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle United are among those interested in the former Porto academy product.

Vitoria's transfer stance

Fernandes had spells on loan from Porto at Portuguese side Tondela and in Turkey with Kasimpasa, prior to moving to Vitoria in the summer.

The deal for Vitoria to sign him was worth less than £1million, but his impressive performances since his transfer have led to suggestions that he is now valued at around £16million.

And reports suggest that amid the coronavirus pandemic and the struggle for clubs financially, a bid of around £16million could tempt Vitoria into selling.

Saints' transfer stance

Ralph Hasenhuttl has previously said that Saints are unlikely to spend big in the transfer market in January.

The Saints boss has spoken about how Southampton look to sign players they can develop, rather than pay big sums for players to come in and make an instant impact.

But Fernandes could fit that mould, with the 23-year-old showing signs of his development in recent months.

Saints do, however, already have four central defenders in the first team squad, with Jannik Vestergaard impressing this season alongside Jan Bednarek, and Jack Stephens and summer signing Mohammed Salisu alternative options.

Salisu is an example of Southampton's transfer policy, having not made a first team appearance as yet after signing from Real Valladolid.

He has recently been included in the matchday squad, and Hasenhuttl has spoken about how he will be an important player long term for Southampton.

So would Fernandes be needed?

Maybe not, with Bednarek recently signing a new deal and Vestergaard and Stephens currently both under contract until the summer of 2022 and new deals possible.

Central defence is not a priority for Southampton, but a deal at the right price for a promising centre-back could still be worth considering for Hasenhuttl.

Leeds United Under-23s claim emphatic Fulham win to end the year on top in Premier League 2
The Whites claimed a huge win at the club's training ground on Monday afternoon.

Leeds United's Under-23s outfit ended 2020 in style on Monday afternoon with an impressive 7-1 victory over Fulham.

Mark Jackson's side ensured that they would enter the new year at the top of the Premier League 2 second division with a scintillating display at Thorp Arch.

United's development squad was able to call upon Pablo Hernandez, Helder Costa, Tyler Roberts and Ian Poveda for the visit of the Cottagers.

The Whites raced into the lead after just three minutes as Roberts headed home from a Costa corner in the opening stages.

Leeds added a second before the half hour mark and it was no more than the hosts deserved as they dominated the Londoners.

Charlie Cresswell this time got himself free in the box from another corner to tower a header home. Fulham defender Connor McAvoy then inadvertently turned the ball into his own net minutes later to give Leeds a three-goal cushion at the break.

Visiting goalkeeper George Wickens was largely responsible for making sure the scoreline stayed respectable during the opening period but United pushed on again after the interval and got their reward.

Pablo Hernandez bagged himself a place on the scoresheet with a clever turn inside the box and was replaced on the hour mark with his afternoon complete.

Substitute Joe Gelhardt won himself a penalty moments after his introduction with a smart run into the area but the playmaker failed to convert from the penalty spot, seeing his effort saved onto the post.

Fellow forward Bobby Kamwa, though, was on hand to knock home the rebound as he reacted quickest.

Gelhardt went in search of a goal as he went close not once but twice before eventually scoring with a lovely low curling effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Winger Costa then rounded off the scoring in the final minute of added time, converting a low Poveda cross into the roof of the net.

The emphatic victory left Leeds at the summit of the Premier League 2 second division heading into January with 22 points from 11 games.

Leeds United U23s: Caprile, Drameh, Davis (Huggins 45'), Jenkins, Cresswell, Casey, Poveda, Greenwood, Roberts (Gelhardt 61'), Hernandez (Kamwa 61'), Costa. Subs: Christy, Kenneh.

Exclusive: Mark Halsey claims VAR got major decision 'wrong' in Newcastle United's draw with Fulham

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has claimed that VAR got a major decision "wrong" in Newcastle United's draw with Fulham.

During the latest round of top-flight fixtures, the Toon were held to a draw against Scott Parker's Cottagers at St. James' Park (per BBC).

In the clash, the visitors went 1-0 up through a Matt Ritchie own goal, however, Newcastle found their way back into the game through a Callum Wilson penalty.

For bringing down the striker, Fulham defender Joachim Andersen was shown a red card after Graham Scott viewed the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Speaking exclusively to This is Futbol, Halsey said: "Remember, Graham Scott had already cautioned him so he wasn't going to take any disciplinary action.

"Then, obviously, VAR get involved because once he gives the penalty, they say to him, 'Well, hey, you've made a clear and obvious error because you haven't sent him off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity.'

'Gets the chance': Hasenhuttl says Southampton man could make full debut soon

£11 million man Ibrahima Diallo could make his first Premier League start in Southampton's Boxing Day clash with Fulham, Ralph Hasenhuttl has told the Saints' website.

Thanks to the supreme performances of Oriol Romeu, the former Brest captain has been forced to wait for a chance at St Mary's this season.

But, with Romeu picking up his fifth booking of the season in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, Diallo has a gift-wrapped opportunity to belatedly establish himself as a key player at St Mary's.

The France U21 international has played just 22 minutes of league football since moving across the Channel.

But, according to Hasenhuttl, Diallo could feature from the start for the first time at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

"Now Ibrahima gets the chance to play and it's good that we have him," said the former RB Leipzig boss.

Diallo's energy and industry could come in handy against a Fulham side boasting plenty of speed and ambition in the final third, with Ademola Lookman in fine form during the past few weeks.

The elegant Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa has also been a valuable source of creativity for Scott Parker this season and it will be Diallo's task to stop the Cameroonian in full flow.

Jamie Carragher agrees forfeit with Gary Neville for if Fulham avoid relegation

Jamie Carragher has joked that he will take Fulham Vice Chairman Tony Khan out to dinner in Liverpool should they avoid the drop after he stated that their relegation was inevitable after only three matches

Jamie Carragher has agreed a forfeit with Gary Neville should Fulham stay in the Premier League.

The former Liverpool and England defender wrote off Scott Parker's side after they lost 3-0 at home to Aston Villa in what was only their third league match of the season.

After stating that he had never been more certain about anything in his life that they would immediately return to the Championship, he called out Fulham's vice chairman Tony Khan.

Tony is the son of owner Shahid and heads up recruitment at the club, and he had addressed the poor early season form by stating that the players will work 'significantly harder' in future.

Carragher said in response: "He's a clown, getting involved with that. Just shut your mouth, get on with it, keep your head down."

Although Fulham slipped back into the relegation zone following Burnley's win over Wolves on Monday afternoon, they have shown signs of life in victories over West Brom and Leicester and draws with Liverpool, Brighton and Newcastle.

While making their predictions about the remainder of the season on Monday Night Football, Neville called out his colleague after he guessed that Fulham would indeed avoid relegation.

"Fulham are going," Carragher joked before Dave Jones reminded viewers that the ex-Liverpool man had stated that he had never been so sure of anything in his life about Fulham being relegated.

Neville, who picked Sheffield United, West Brom and Brighton to go down, said when asked about his decision to leave out Fulham: "Yeah not...

"I think to be fair it could be Fulham but the fact that he said that there was nothing so sure just made me go for someone else.

"I want to know what the forfeit is if Fulham actually so stay up. There must be a forfeit for that. You can't say that after one game that its the most certain he's been about anything that Fulham will go down."

He then added: "Fulham fans just tweet in about what you'd like him to do."

Carragher then said when asked if he was still so sure: "I'll take the owner out for a meal, I gave him a bit of stick as well didn't I."

Dave Jones then promoted laughter by joking that Carragher could take him to the circus.

Neville then hit back: "The last thing he wants to do is to go out with a meal with you."

Carra then laughed about the current restrictions in Merseyside and London by saying: "We're in tier two, they're in four now! "He can't wait!"
