Christmas Day matches

I'm old but not that old, so for those who were, in my view, lucky enough to attend Christmas Day games, how was it? Part of Christmas schedule to go to a game back in the day? A source of trouble leaving Christmas Day celebrations in order to go to football. What was the atmosphere like? Festive? Flat (due to excesses)? I know there were some incredible scores and generally a lot of goals so guessing the players probably enjoyed themselves!

Normally played on Boxing Day. 1963 best result I attended at Fulham. 10-1 against Ipswich.

I was just reading the following, very apt thread has been started :-

Or my drive to Ipswich two days later for the return match and expecting a walkover. Instead of that we lost 4-2!

That was our record win and Bobby Robson played I think.

Graham Leggat scored the quickest ever hat trick - since beaten?

Ahh what a Boxing Day the ten one was. Remember the following Sunday Night at The London Palladium Tommy Trinder joking Fulham win 10 to 1 and there are no papers. My first away outside London for the return and we go and lose. I missed Leggat's second, still celebrating his first and then he scores again. I jumped up and down saying something like come on and get your hat trick and a chap behind says to me "that was his hat trick". Three points this Boxing Day would make me very happy. Have a great Christmas and stay safe everyone

Went there too by train 7/6 return. A recent conversation with a player I was told that the players had a good drink to celebrate the result and didn't take Ipswich seriously for the return game.

You guys are so lucky, I think enjoyment of the game isn't what it use to be, it's so much more a business. I don't know, maybe I'm talking nonsense. Great to hear you guys and your memory's.

Shame we lost to them a few days later in the away fixture, maybe due to some of the players having a few drinks at my Grandads house in the morning of the game, wouldn't be allowed now! I was only allowed lemonade, how times have changed!

One of the reasons we lost at Ipswich was the fog, I stood on the half way line and couldn't
see the goal at either end. All we saw was players running up and down and only knew it was
a goal when we heard people shouting behind the goal.  The drive home was a nightmare.
Wouldn't have been played now of course.

Was that the first recorded case of "Fulhamish"?

I was 12 at the time and I remember it well.I walked to the Cottage and back home again from Plough Road in Battersea on my own [mate let me down] and I remember it being wet and very cold.
The game was a blur of goals, most people lost count of the score.Us kids down the front of the Riverside terrace were very over excited and totally shocked as Ipswich were League Champions just two seasons before and were managed by the great Alf Ramsey, they had a great forward line,Crawford,Phillips and Leadbetter.Graham Leggat well what can you say.....the most underrated player in our history in my opinion.
I don`t post here often but topics like this revive old memories that somehow bring a sense of longing for long lost days when football seemed so innocent [if thats the right word].
Anyway Happy Christmas everyone and remember always be proud of supporting the best team in London.

Football was innocent in those days and the years soon after. I was at a dinner where Bob Wilson was the guest speaker. He was to play on Boxing Day and after Christmas Dinner at home  he went out for a run in his bright red Arsenal tracksuit. As he ran along the road a passer by shouted 'what else did you get for Christmas!'
