This decision follows discussions with the Premier League and advice from Public Health England.

'Best league in the world' - Mourinho mocks Premier League as Spurs were left in dark over Fulham postponement

The Tottenham boss expressed his frustration as the match, which has now been called off, remained in doubt just hours before kick-off

Jose Mourinho took to Instagram to mock the Premier League as Tottenham remained uncertain over the potential postponement of their upcoming clash with Fulham.

Spurs were set to play host to Fulham on Wednesday, having earned a 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday as they continue on through the festive period.

However, the match's status was up in the air after Fulham was hit with a number of positive coronavirus tests before the league ultimately postponed it just hours before kickoff.

The game is the second one in a matter of days to be postponed due to coronavirus, with Manchester City's meeting with Everton called off on Monday after the former confirmed a series of positive tests.

The news comes after Fulham manager Scott Parker missed the team's goalless draw with Southampton on Boxing Day after a member of his household tested positive for Covid-19.

Fulham were set to travel across London for the match on Wednesday but that journey was ultimately cancelled.

With the match still up in the air just a few hours before kick-off, Mourinho took to social media to voice his frustration with all of the uncertainty surrounding the game and the decision whether or not to play.

"Match at 6pm... We still don't know if we play," he posted on Instagram alongside a video of his staff glued to their phones and the television. "Best league in the world."

In recent days, there have been calls for the Premier League to go on hiatus as the league deals with a surge in coronavirus numbers.

The Premier League announced on Tuesday the highest number of Covid-19 cases since weekly testing began, with 18 people testing positive.

In response to that uptick in positive cases, Sam Allardyce and Nuno Espirito Santo said that they believe the league should take a break until testing numbers dip back down.

The league has been mowing through the festive period, with teams playing three matches in a week during the typical holiday fixture crunch.

Following Wednesday's postponed match against Fulham, Tottenham are set to face Leeds on Saturday before taking on Brentford in the Carabao Cup three days later.

Fulham, meanwhile, are scheduled to visit Burnley on Sunday before a six-day break ahead of an FA Cup visit to Queens Park Rangers.

Premier League statement on calls to halt season after Tottenham vs Fulham postponed

The Premier League have come out and claimed they have confidence in their Covid-19 protocols as they resist calls to halt the season after Tottenham vs Fulham is postponed

The Premier League has underlined its confidence in their Covid-19 protocols as they insist there are no plans to introduce a 'circuit breaker' amid calls to halt the season.

Tottenham's game with Fulham has been postponed this evening which comes just two days after Manchester City's clash at Everton was called off hours before kick-off.

Coronavirus cases ases around the country are rising with Tier 4 status being imposed in a growing number of areas.

There is a growing number of people who feel as if a pause to the season would serve as a remedy to the ongoing innuse.

The Premier League recently recorded its highest number of positive cases in its latest round of testing.

But authorities maintain the season will not be stopped for any length of time.

A statement read: "Fulham FC's match at Tottenham Hotspur, due to be played at 6pm this evening, has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting this afternoon.

"Fulham lodged a request with the Premier League Board to rearrange the fixture following a significant rise in positive COVID-19 cases, as well as a number of players showing symptoms today.

"The Premier League Board has consulted its medical advisors and the decision to postpone the game has been taken as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority. The group will now be retested immediately.

"The Premier League has not discussed pausing the season and has no plans to do so. The League continues to have confidence in its COVID-19 protocols to enable fixtures to be played as scheduled, and these protocols continue to have the full backing of Government.

"The League wishes those with COVID-19 a safe and speedy recovery and will rearrange the postponed fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham in due course."

Albion remain outside the bottom three after Fulham's game is postponed

Albion remain outside the relegation zone after Covid concerns continue to grow in the Premier League.

That is after 18th place Fulham had to call off their game at Tottenham tonight due to a rising number of coronavirus cases within Scott Parker's squad.

However, the league has insisted that they will continue to play fixtures.

In a statement released this afternoon the Premier League said: "With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled."

That is despite the Premier League announcing their highest amount of postive tests so far this season, with 18 new cases between December 21-27.

It becomes the second game this week to be postponed with Manchester City having to call off their trip to Everton on Monday due a rise in the number of coronavirus cases in their squad.

Yesterday Sheffield United revealed they had "a number of positive cases" prior to their 1-0 defeat at Burnley.

There had been talk in the last couple of days of whether the Premier League should consider a 'circuit breaker' and halt the season for a couple of weeks.

Albion head coach Graham Potter was asked whether he would be in favour of that idea.

To which he replied: "I'd be whatever the people think is the right thing to do, for the health of our community that is the most important thing. Whatever is deemed right that is what we will do."

He added: "If they are getting cancelled because of health reasons then that is a concern.

"But we have to make sure that we do the right thing because football is important, but it is not as important as people's lives and health."

Spurs release dignified statement after Fulham match postponement

This is very classy from Spurs.

Of course it is hugely frustrating to find out that a vital fixture has been postponed with only hours to go until kickoff. Each and every game is a huge logistical endeavour that takes days of planning and the hard work of hundreds of people behind the scenes. And never more so than during a global pandemic. As well as the planning aspect, of course the fans and everyone involved is also looking forward to a game of football.

But these are trying times, and things change quickly. With just over three hours to go until the planned 6pm start, Spurs' final home game of the 2020 calendar year against local rivals Fulham was cancelled. This is due to an outbreak of positive Covid-19 cases in the visiting team's ranks. Jose Mourinho went public with his (understandable) sporting frustration via Instagram, but the football club released a hugely classy statement.

With no hint of annoyance, and plenty of empathy, it reads:

'We can confirm that our Premier League home fixture against Fulham, scheduled to take place this evening (Wednesday 30 December), has been postponed.

'The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, with Fulham having requested the postponement on the grounds of the number of COVID-19 positive cases among their players and staff.

'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a safe and speedy recovery to all those who are affected.

'Details of a new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course.'

No fuss, no finger-pointing. Just a genuine understanding of the difficult situation the country finds itself in.

Nottingham Forest winger has his say on crunch January transfer decision

Anthony Knockaert's loan spell with the Reds from Fulham is set to come to an end next week

Nottingham Forest's Anthony Knockaert. (Image: Joseph Raynor/ Nottingham Post)

On-loan winger Anthony Knockaert says he is keen to extend his stay at Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old's loan deal from Fulham is due to expire on January 7, making Saturday's trip to Preston North End potentially his last game in the Garibaldi.

The Reds do have an option to buy, while there is also the possibility of trying to negotiate keeping him on loan until the summer.

Forest boss Chris Hughton has said a decision is yet to be made about Knockaert's future, and the man himself says he is unsure what will happen.

But if there is the chance to remain Trentside, the former France Under-21 international says he would be happy to do so.

"I think the last game is Saturday," Knockaert said, after Tuesday night's 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

"I don't know what will happen. I will have to speak with both clubs - with Forest and Fulham - and see what they say.

"I actually don't know what's going to happen, right now I couldn't tell you.

"I feel really good here and if I can stay until the end of the season, I will do.

"I've got people working for me at the moment, and the clubs will tell me what's best for me to do.

"I don't know what will happen, we will wait to see."

Knockaert has made 15 appearances for the Reds since signing on domestic deadline day, with his only goal coming in the 2-1 defeat at Norwich City.

Tottenham vs Fulham: Why Premier League is confident fixtures can continue despite third match being postponed
On a day of yet more uncertainty and chaos surrounding cases of coronavirus in football, the Premier League remains bullish the show will go on

Jose Mourinho reacted sarcastically to events surrounding the Premier League's decision to postpone Fulham's visit to Tottenham on Wednesday, less than four hours before kick-off.

The Spurs manager posted an Instagram video showing him slumped in an armchair at the team's pre-match hotel while waiting for league officials to decide whether to agree to Fulham's request for the postponement due to a Covid-19 outbreak in their camp.

Mourinho accompanied the post with the sarcastic caption: "Match at 6pm... We still don't know if we play. Best league in the world."

On a day of yet more uncertainty and chaos surrounding the increased impact the virus is having on the sport, Tottenham were more sympathetic with their official response.

A club statement read: "The Premier League informed us of the decision this afternoon, with Fulham having requested the postponement on the grounds of the number of COVID-19 positive cases among their players and staff.

"Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends their best wishes to Fulham for a safe and speedy recovery to all those who are affected. Details of a new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course."

The Premier League, meanwhile, remained bullish about the situation and the prospects of fixtures continuing.

A statement read: "With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its Covid-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled."

A later statement added: "The Premier League has not discussed pausing the season and has no plans to do so."

The latest development followed the postponement of Manchester City's visit to Everton on Monday, due to an outbreak in Pep Guardiola's squad.

Sheffield United also reported multiple positive tests on Tuesday, including two players, although their fixture at Burnley proceeded that evening.

That had led to calls for a temporary two-week hiatus for English football, a so-called "circuit breaker," which has been championed by West Brom manager Sam Allardyce.

Speaking after his side's 5-0 loss to Leeds, 66-year-old Allardyce claimed safety is paramount given the rise in cases across the UK, with the majority of England expected to be placed under the toughest tier four restrictions after the official number of new daily cases soared past 50,000 for the first time.

"Everyone's safety is more important than anything else," he said. "When I listen to the news the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus [so] we can only do the right thing which is have a circuit break.

"I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do is catch Covid. I'm very concerned for myself and football in general. If that's what needs to be done we need to do it. We had one positive this week and it seems to be creeping around no matter how hard we try."

Fulham's visit to Burnley on Sunday, as well as City's clash at Chelsea the same day, are both in jeopardy although City resumed training on Wednesday following confirmation there had been no new positive cases after further testing took place the day before.

Everton were due to have 2,000 supporters in attendance against City, as one of only two Premier League clubs, along with Liverpool, allowed fans in their ground at the start of this week.

But Liverpool has now been placed in Tier 3 under new Government restrictions, meaning no Premier League clubs are allowed supporters for the time being.

'Fulham lodged a request' – Premier League statement on why Spurs game was postponed

The Premier League have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur's clash against Fulham this evening was postponed as a precaution after a number of Fulham players were showing symptoms of COVID-19 today.

News first emerged on Tuesday that the game might not go ahead after several positive tests within the Cottagers' camp.

It was explained that the game going ahead would depend on the results of the tests of other members within the camp (PA News Agency).

However, there was no official confirmation that the game would be postponed until just hours ahead of kick-off this evening.

Some Spurs fans on social media are worried that the postponement of the match will lead to a fixture pile-up for the Lilywhites in the coming weeks and months.

The Premier League have now explained that they arrived at the decision following consultation with medical advisors.

They also revealed that there are no plans to suspend the competition for now and that they are confident in the safety of their COVID protocols.

According to Football.London's Alasdair Gold, the statement from the Premier League read: "Fulham's match at Tottenham has been postponed following a Premier League Board meeting this afternoon.

"Fulham lodged a request to rearrange the fixture following a significant rise in positive COVID-19 cases, and a number of players showing symptoms today.

"The Premier League Board has consulted its medical advisors and the decision to postpone the game has been taken as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority. The group will now be retested immediately.

"With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.

"The League wishes those with COVID-19 a safe and speedy recovery and will rearrange the postponed fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham in due course."

Spurs Web Opinion

It sounds like the right decision was made in the end as having the game would have go ahead would have entailed significant risk. The last thing we need is for some of our players to go down with the virus at a crucial point of the season.

Tottenham left furious after Fulham clash postponed at 11th hour amid Covid chaos

Tottenham were due to play Fulham on Wednesday night but the game was called off less than three hours before it was due to begin amid a Covid-19 outbreak at Craven Cottage

Tottenham have been left furious after the Premier League postponed their clash with Fulham less than three hours before kick-off.

It turned into a complete farce with Jose Mourinho posting a picture of his players still not sure whether they could play with the caption: "Match at 6pm... We still don't know if we play. Best league in the world."

Spurs were in complete agreement with their manager as they were left waiting even though Fulham first reported the outbreak to the Premier League on Tuesday but no decision was taken until 24 hours later.

It is believed six Fulham players and four members of staff have tested positive but it might have been complicated further by others needing to self isolate even if they were negative.

They may yet be able to play Sunday's game at Burnley if there are no more positive cases.

Fulham were themselves in a hotel in London preparing to play the game but asked the Premier League for a postponement and eventually an official statement was put out at 3.14pm.

However, by that time Tottenham had already gone to great expense to put the game on, TV crews had started setting up as the game was due to be live on Amazon and their players were also left in limbo.

There is anger among clubs that there does not seem to be a set method of determining whether a game should go ahead because the original outline plan was that if a team could field 14 players then they must play.

It has further been complicated by a backlash after Manchester City 's game at Everton being postponed on Monday with the Merseyside club then asking for the reasons and a full breakdown of that decision.

Other clubs now feel that the Premier League have opened the floodgates and more clubs will ask for postponements which will cause chaos and a huge fixture backlog but with no set plan in place to decide if games should be played.

There was one piece of good news in that Manchester City have now reopened their training ground and can resume training which means their trip to Chelsea on Sunday should get the green light.

That follows City reporting five positive cases which resulted in their game at Everton being postponed but, having done a new round of tests, there were no new cases and the training ground has undergone a deep clean.

The Premier League are adamant that they have "full confidence" the season can go ahead as planned despite this week there being a record weekly high of 18 positive tests among players and staff.

That figure is likely to rise next week given the postponements of two fixtures because of serious outbreaks.

But the Premier League insist that the ratio of positives to the number of tests is still very low and could be a knock-on effect of Christmas get togethers with the hope it will ease in the next few weeks.

Premier League bosses wrote to clubs before Christmas to ask them to urge their players to behave with extreme caution to try and avoid a big upturn in cases.

But that does not seem to have worked amid the chaos in the top flight and also in the EFL.

However, Government sources insist that they remain happy with the current protocols and there is no appetite for a shutdown of elite sport.

Therefore, the Premier League is likely to carry on as planned and, as reported yesterday, there is no will for a two week coronavirus break even though clubs have privately discussed it among themselves.

Journalists reveal why Spurs are 'very unhappy' with Fulham after postponement

According to Football.London's Alasdair Gold and The Athletic's Charlie Eccleshare, Tottenham Hotspur are displeased with the late nature of the postponement of their clash against Fulham this evening.

While reports indicated on Tuesday that there was a chance the game might not go ahead, the clubs only received official confirmation on the matter just hours ahead of kick-off.

It has been revealed that Fulham sent a request to the Premier League for the game to be postponed after a number of their players showed symptoms of the virus today.

The Premier League said they took the decision as a precaution after consultation with medical experts.

Jose Mourinho has already expressed his displeasure at the uncertainty caused by the potential cancellation mere hours before the match.

Gold has now claimed that Tottenham were ready to travel to the stadium to play and were extremely unhappy at the lack of communication from Fulham about their circumstances.

Spurs Web Opinion

The decision to postpone the game appears to have been the right one as it would have been a major risk for the match to go ahead. However, the Premier League should not have left it as late as they did to make the announcement.

Covid-19 has backed the Premier League into a corner with few options for escape
The health of players, managers and others is at risk while games continue but a 'circuit break' could cause problems down the line

At precisely 2.02pm, Jose Mourinho was sitting with his feet up. With just under four hours until kick off against Fulham, he and his coaching staff should have been making their final preparations.

Instead, they were slouched on communal sofas, buried deep in their phones with Sky Sports News humming away on a giant screen in the background. Slowly panning around the room with his phone before lingering on the time, Mourinho posted a video to Instagram captioned: "Match at 6PM... we still don't know if we play. Best league in the world."

Given that news had broken almost 24 hours previous that Fulham had returned a number of positive Covid-19 tests, Mourinho's frustration was understandable. While the Premier League board had to convene to approve Fulham's request for a postponement, something is wrong when the outcome of the decision-making process isn't apparent until 3.14pm – the time the postponement was finally announced – on the afternoon of the game.

The resulting disruption goes beyond players, coaches and backroom staff. Mourinho will no doubt feel that waiting in limbo for so long was an unhelpful distraction for Spurs ahead of their next game against Leeds, with the prolonged uncertainty and sense of anticlimax both potentially unsettling for his team.

Even worse is the fact that, with so little time until kick off, medics, security, groundsmen and media may have set off for work before hearing news of the cancellation. Allowing them to travel through Tier 4 London for no reason by leaving the announcement so late in the day is deeply unfair.

While the Premier League clearly needs to move faster when deciding how to respond to Covid-19 outbreaks, the first priority should be the health of players, club staff and others working in football. This is now the third Premier League fixture postponed on account of Covid-19, while Fulham join Manchester City, Newcastle and Sheffield United in suffering a significant flare-up within their squad.

The latest round of testing in the top flight returned 18 positives, the highest figure of the season so far. While the Premier League insists there are "low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs" and there is "full confidence" in being able to continue as scheduled, it feels like an increasingly precarious situation.

Sam Allardyce has called for a "circuit break", though increased fixture congestion comes with the risk of more serious injuries down the line. Still, when even Big Sam is worried, the Premier League at least needs to listen.

These Spurs fans want Fulham 'fined' and '3 points' awarded after Covid-19 outbreak sees Premier League tie postponed

Some Tottenham Hotspur supporters have demanded that the Premier League award Jose Mourinho's side three points after tonight's tie against Fulham was postponed due to a Covid-19.

Football.London's Alasdair Gold first broke news of the fixture's cancellation just after 2.30pm on Wednesday, this comes after the Athletic reported that Fulham suffered an outbreak within their squad.

Gold also tweeted later on Tuesday afternoon that Spurs have been left very 'unhappy' by the handling of this situation, with the tie cancelled just three-and-a-half-hours before kick-off was scheduled.

That was just when Gold and the Athletic initially reported the news, official statements from the top-flight and both clubs came some time after.

It seems despicable that some Spurs fans have disregarded the severity of this moment and have called for Fulham to be fined and also their side to be awarded the three points.

Regardless of how the outbreak occurred, the initial thoughts of all football supporters – and everyone involved with the game – should be for the good health and recovery from anyone affected – not the ordeal being used as a literal moment to point score.

FPL tips: Mitrovic and Watkins overdue goals

Ollie Watkins may have registered three assists against Crystal Palace last weekend but he has not found the back of the net since GW 8 despite playing the full 90 minutes in every match since.

In that time, Watkins has made 21 attempts on goal and amassed a score of well over 300 on FPL's Threat metric – an amount which would typically average more than three goals.

To see who else might be overdue a goal, we have taken a look at every player in the league who has scored at least twice this season to see who has taken the most shots since last improving their tally.

Could these players see their luck change soon? (PA Graphics)

Misfiring Mitrovic could provide differential

The only player on our list who has taken more shots than Watkins since they last troubled the goalscoring charts is Aleksandar Mitrovic.

This lack of goalscoring form has seen his price drop from £6.0m to £5.5m and while he is not an obvious choice he could provide a serious differential for little cost.

In his last Premier League season he found the net 11 times and prior to that he was returning more than a goal every three matches.

Two goals in 788 minutes this season is well below his established pedigree and he has a double gameweek on the horizon, surrounded by three matches which carry the lowest possible fixture difficulty rating.

Don't give up on Grealish just yet

It has been fewer matches since Jack Grealish registered a goal but due to the sheer volume of shots he takes, he finds himself in our top five.

Only seven players in the league have taken more shots than Grealish's 40 but the last 16 of those have been unsuccessful.

Since the injury to Ross Barkley, Villa's homegrown talisman has found himself playing through the middle rather than out on the wing, where he was having so much joy earlier in the season.

Anwar El Ghazi has scored five goals in as many games since stepping into the role previously occupied by Grealish but with Barkley fit enough for the bench against Chelsea, it is entirely possible that El Ghazi could lose his spot and that Villa could revert to the set-up which allowed their captain a clearer sight of goal.

Even if this is not the case, Grealish continues to provide creativity as well as goal threat so it seems foolish to assume that his big point hauls are all behind him.

More to come from De Bruyne

The only one of the seven players who has taken more shots than Grealish but scored fewer times is Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne.

City have struggled for goals this season but with an easy-looking run of games between now and February it is surely only a matter of time before they return to their normal standards.

When they do, you can be fairly confident that a certain Belgian playmaker will be involved in the action.

Premier League side ready to 'step up interest' in Nottingham Forest ace as loanee outlines stance

Incomings and outgoings are expected at the City Ground when the January transfer window opens

Worrall interest

Burnley are reportedly ready to "step up their interest" in Nottingham Forest ace Joe Worrall, ahead of the January transfer window.

The Premier League side have been long-term admirers of the Reds centre-back, though have previously been rebuffed in their attempt to prise him away from the City Ground.

However, it is claimed the Clarets are likely to try their luck again next month, as they are set to be taken over by American sports investors ALK Capital.

The Mirror say Burnley "plan to step up their interest in Joe Worrall after their takeover", as it will "help boss Sean Dyche go back in for" the defender.

On the move?

Fresh speculation has emerged linking striker Miguel Angel Guerrero with a departure from Nottingham Forest in January.

The summer signing is said to be in the thinking of former club Sporting Gijon, where he spent five years earlier in his career.

Reports in Spain claim the second division side see Guerrero as a potential option to replace fellow forward Alvaro Vazquez if he departs - and they would look to bring him in on loan.

The 30-year-old signed a one-year deal, with the option for a further 12 months beyond that, when he joined the Reds from fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned outfit Olympiacos in September.

Collymore view

Former Nottingham Forest striker Stan Collymore has waded into the debate surrounding Karen Carney's comments about Leeds United and the Elland Road club's subsequence response on Twitter.

Former England Women's international Carney, who won 144 caps for her country, said during Amazon Prime Sport's coverage of Leeds' 5-0 win at West Brom that Marcelo Bielsa's side benefited from the coronavirus break in March to win the Championship title earlier this year.

Leeds responded on Twitter by poking fun at Carney's comments, provoking a backlash from some fans who felt that it would encourage online abuse to be directed at her.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani, replying to a tweet which said Leeds should be "ashamed" of their actions, wrote: "I take the responsibility of the club tweet.

Not sure why Spurs are upset with Fulham. Fulham requested a postponement on Tuesday, surely it's up to the FA to inform clubs of impending postponement, and as for Spurs fans wanting Fulham fined and all 3 points given to them the only comment I can make is "TWATS"
Story of my life
"I was looking back to see if she was looking back to see if i was looking back at her"
Sadly she wasn't
